I've been enjoying the fare and ambiance at the Sher-Main Grill for over 25 years! When you walk in, it's as if you stepped back into a 1950s Diner. My previous review of Sher-Main still holds pretty much true as far as the food goes. Unfortunately, some of their morning crew seem to have developed a "we don't really depend on customers" mindset. We came in this morning for our customary Sunday breakfast (which we've done for a *long* time) and instead of being greeted within a couple of minutes with coffee, water, etc., we *sat there* for over twelve minutes without anyone coming to the table. If this was a large, busy chain restaurant that had two servers call in sick unexpectedly, I might possibly call this an unfortunate situation. But with a total of three customers in the house, not noticing another occupied table for twelve minutes is inexcusable. We ended up walking out, at which time one of the guys finally said "Go sit down, I'll get you some coffee". Too late. I'm yanking a star because the staff here have been doing their thing for years and years and their servers know their stuff. But sitting twelve minutes waiting for someone? anyone? to come to the table elicits a big WTF? from us, and neither of us is particularly inclined to try our luck again on Sunday mornings. read more

We stopped here on a whim, because of the good reviews. They were all very well-deserved! We had omelettes, and they were delicious! Tasted great, and the ingredients were fresh. Service was very nice and prompt. We will be back!!!! read more

This is your typical breakfast diner. Its an old place, just slightly grimy but the food is cheap and orders come out quick. Its near the crazy house so youll most likely end up running into one of their wandering tenants. read more

I've been coming here since 1990, it looks exactly the same. Back then I'd get soup and sandwich for lunch and observe the oddballs that came in. Less oddballs last time I went , food the same greasy spoon it was. Never really had a bad experience there . Not many places left like this around, I can only hope in 25 more years it's still there. ( BTW it's a great place to buy a "street" person a meal, there's always someone cobbling together a couple of bucks at the counter for something cheap to eat, I always offer to upgrade their meal for free) read more

I walked into Sher Main around 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. The place was absolutely filthy. One of the busboys was laying down asleep in one of the booths right near the front door. My son had the pancakes, which honestly were pretty good. I had a very very watery spinach omelette. We won't be going back. read more

Offers breakfast all day and very nice pricing. Neighborhood spot with a good cook. This neighborhood is like the old time neighbors, before high rises and high rents. If you like breakfast food this is not a bad place to drop into. It's on the cheaper side of food but you better have cash in hand because your plastic is no good here. I did notice that the quality of cooking can change drastically from day to day. My guess is one cook is really good and the other not so much. I do suggest staying on the breakfast side of things because according to my boyfriend the burger was "flavorless" but he had enjoyed his omelet the day before. All in all the food is worth the asking price but if it wasn't for the fact that I am a block from this place we probably would have only tried it once. read more

There are not too many Sher-Main Restaurants left any more, and that's too bad. To be sure, this restaurant, situated on Main Street, near Sherman, in Evantson, is from another era. It is, if I may use the analogy, like the "Cheers" of neighborhood eateries. Having come in on Saturday, June 20, I took a spot at the counter, where I soon started talking to some "regulars," including one gentleman who told me he had been coming to Sher-Main, since 1969. Also, sitting a couple seats away, was a truly wonderful lady who I had recently met--she too, was a regular. Now, no only will you find a sense of family, here, but the food is DARN GOOD, too! Whether you want a hearty breakfast, or a very tasty lunch, or an early dinner, you will not be disappointed with Sher-Main's varied menu. And what's more, the prices are quite reasonable, with generous portions. And then there's Ted, one of the owners of this establishment. This guy is the epitome of HOSPITALITY. He always goes out of his way to make you feel at home. And that my dear readers, is no small feat. For, in today's "rush-rush" world, where good customer service is so very hard to find, Ted proves that it still exists. And, in addition, that same welcome mat is also on display with any of the guys who prepare the food--not only do they do a heck of a good job with everything they cook, but they too, know how to treat customers. In sum, you can't go wrong with the Sher-Main. Whether you just want a cup of java, breakfast, lunch, or an early dinner, I would encourage you to stop in. And if you do, I think you will soon see, as I have, that you "lucked out," because Sher-Main is far more than a coffee shop. In fact, Sher-Main spells a very healthy dose of HOSPITALITY, a sincere desire to please all the customers, and GOOD food, to boot. This is pretty much your classic greasy spoon, down to the laminated plastic menus, pale green booths, and specials clipped to the menus. I love places like this! The service was really great and attentive. The coffee was also good. I had eggs over medium, hash browns, bacon, and wheat toast. The eggs were fairly standard. The hash browns are the kind that aren't fried to a crisp, so they weren't greasy. The bacon was well-done and not at all limp (a pet peeve of mine). For some reason, the toast was excellent. I couldn't figure out what was so good about it. I'll definitely go there again, maybe to try lunch or some pancakes. It's cash only, so be prepared. read more

No frills whatsoever but great food and service. LOVE this place. It probably hasn't changed the decor 1972 and yes, some of the booths have duct tape on the seats. You won't acknowledge any of that when you have their food. It's clean and good for kids and families or just solo. Looking for a neighborhood place to have breakfast at so I stopped in. Im only giving this place 4 stars cause the it does need a makeover to the look. The booths and diners are older and probably havent been updated since they opened. The breakfast food we had was amazing and just the local breakfast diner i was looking for. I had eggs, bacon, toast, and the hashbrowns and my wife had the pancakes and sausage. Everything came out on time and tasted just like mom and dad used to make. You certainly won't be surprised by anything, but it meets expectations for a small breakfast joint. It's cheap and served wicked fast. It's a bit greasy by nature, but it's all well made in my view. I'd recommend it for anyone who's a fan of diner type breakfast as I am. read more
