We arrived mid-week at 10am and the parking lot was *packed*, which is always a promising sign! It's cheerfully casual, seat yourself, and the owner took our drink orders immediately. Noticeably, this is a heavily male environment at this hour: Of the fifty or so customers, about three were women. Lots of retirees, road crews, and city employees. This goes a long way towards the portion size: If you leave hungry, it's your own darn fault. At a table near us, a man got a plate of the "Gut-Buster" for $22.95: six eggs, sausage and gravy, side of toast: It covered the entire dinner plate, and rose 2" high. More than adequate diner, nice menu. The 4th star is earned due to the friendly and hardworking wait staff that kept the coffee cups filled, even for our table of 6. Good food, mildly seasoned but with salt, pepper and hot sauce readily available. Assortment of jellies including marmalade for the toast. Large portions. They have options with 6 and even 12 eggs!! I was taught the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. Well... we all need to amend that definition. The new definition of insanity is trying to finish a breakfast at the east side. I ordered the giambotta - no surprise there, I've tried them all around Utica. The plate came out and I knew I was in big trouble. This thing was Mammoth! Now I'll admit most of it was made up of potatoes but in my book - potatoes are a food group (my favorite one). There were plenty of sausage, greens and a ton of cheese melted on top too. If you haven't checked this place out - please do so - the prices are decent, the portions huge, decor very nice and the coffee is great. read more

I keep trying this place and it continually disappoints. If sherry wants nice I would have given up a while ago. The coffee is good, and the service is fine. The food is lacking a lot though. The cook doesn't really seem to understand that he's not cooking for himself, but for paying customers. Really bad plating, really bad technique. I love breakfast, and this place is close to home. I'm hoping the cook figures it out soon read more

The Syracuse University chapter of Delta Kappa Alpha stopped at Sheri's Eastside Diner for breakfast on the way back from our bi-annual weekend retreat, unaware that our lives were about to be changed forever. When we called ahead, we were surprised that they were willing to seat a hungry group of 25+ college students, but--to our surprise--we were all seated with no wait time. Upon entering, we were charmed by the quaint, kitschy decor. As an organization primarily consisting of film students, the interior reminded us of a film set, almost like one of the small-town diners featured on ABC's "What Would You Do?" with John Quiñones. In fact, we kept peeking back at the security camera to make sure there wasn't a camera guy on the other side of the wall. I'll be honest, we were A LOT to handle. I think we may have scarred the regulars for life. But Sheri and the rest of the staff were extremely accommodating and joked around with us. We kept them on their feet with lots of requests and substitutions, but they met our every need, bringing us sauces and to-go boxes at record speeds and constantly offering refills on drinks. Our group ordered a variety of breakfast/lunch dishes (probably half the menu), and I did not hear a single complaint. We really got a kick out of the dish names, our favorite being, "Slop." Although the prices are low, the portions are huge. In fact, many of us had leftovers for DAYS. Queen Sheri, probably aware of how many leftovers people take home, blesses her patrons with sturdy plastic to-go boxes (the GOOD ones), not the flimsy styrofoam ones you would normally get at any other small-town diner. And the food was still great days later! Overall, dining at Sheri's Eastside Diner was an experience that DKA will be talking about for years to come. I rarely tip above my usual 20%, but I gave Sheri a 30% tip that day (which wasn't even that much considering how well-priced the food was). Delta Kappa Alpha bestows its highest honor upon our Empress, Sheri, the embodiment of our 10 jewels of character, and we hope to one day make a pilgrimage back to her divine kingdom for another feast. read more

Very slow service. 40 minutes for a to go order, over 30 minutes wait from ordering to eat. Food was nothing special. Hashbrowns bland and not crispy. Strawberries were frozen and defrosted. First was drenched in butter. Coffee was so- so and served with 50/50 pods, not fresh cream or milk. Staff was friendly, restaurant was clean. Much bigger inside than expected. High chairs available. This is an amazing place for a fast, delicious, high-quality, low-price homemade breakfast. I ordered the corned beef hash and French toast, while my boyfriend ordered the macaroni and cheese omelette and a chocolate chip pancake. All of our plates came heaping with food - the pancake was seriously bigger than my head! Sit in a booth on a sunny Saturday morning and you'll see the beauty in this little place just like I did. Went to Utica to run. After the run and a personal record for both of us, we wanted something good to eat. Didn't want to travel far, so I Yelped it and Sheri's was close by. Wise choice too. Perusing the menu, the regular fare was standard breakfast stuff. Eggs, waffles, pancakes, etc. I wanted something different and filling. I see on the menu a dish called "Slop". Perfect!! It was a mix of everything breakfast and it was a huge portion. Potatoes, peppers, eggs, breakfast meats, all mixed together in a giant pile. Reminded me of how I used to eat when I was in the Navy. I used to mix everything together on my tray and make my own slop. She went with a standard cheeseburger. This is where you lost a star. It was lunchtime, and we were told that we couldn't order french fries because "the fryer was off because they were getting ready to close" or something to that effect. I'm sorry, but this can't happen. That's like Mcdonalds turning off their fryer 2 hours before closing. Had to ding you on that one. Everything else was spot on. Portion sizes were big, price was small. Service was excellent. Space was clean. When we come back next summer, we will make a point to stop here again. Sheri was very busy, however, extremely pleasant and had a smile on her face. Food was plentiful and excellent! We ordered The BIG Three. And, it's big. We could not finish it. I highly recommend Sheri's Eastside Diner. A friend and I stopped in today, we went at 11:30 in hopes of beating a crowd for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised to see they offer breakfast all day.....being my favorite meal! The service was excellent, fast and I liked the variety of choices on the board for their daily specials. All I can say if you walk out of there and can eat your whole meal, you are going to be extremely full! The food was perfectly cooked, and very good. My question to Sheri was " do you offer 1/2 orders?" She informed me she will do it any way I'd like. Since I work right down the street I know I will now be a regular. My wife and I just finished breakfast there. We waited over 1.25 hours after ordering to get our meals. The server apologized over and over. The owner who was there could not be bothered. This was the second time in three visits that this happened. It will be the last as I will never go there again and I would suggest to any reader of this that they not go there.
