I love this 89 year old little lady! She gets to all the knots and nerves I didn't know I had. She also gives you tips on what you can do to maintain ur body healthy. She speaks to you like family and is unintentionally funny. She had my husband and I laughing. She served us Matcha tea which was delicious and took really good care of us. I had the day off due to lower back pain and sciatic nerve pain. The first month I could not sit for more than two mins. I had to stand and walk to avoid the pain. It was horrible. I got muscle relaxers and other medication for the pain which I didn't want to do or take. So, I saw shiatsu Tokyo and gave it a try. My pain before going was a 7/10 and after my massage it was a 2/10...i was able to stretch and lift my foot higher than before with little to no pain. So after reading the yelp reviews here I had to experience this 89 year old Japanese lady's massage skills myself. I booked an appointment and just walked out of it right now. Basically it was like being adopted by a Japanese grandma for 90 minutes. She was incredibly strong and I joked to my fiancée before leaving that I expected her to pulverize me into a pulp. Ok she didn't do that, she was very skilled. I will note that the Yelper who complained about her body shaming her for being fat just didn't understand the cultural context. I didn't get my Japanese grandma's name but I'm a little fat at the moment and she commented about needing to eat better but that's just how little Asian grandmas act so it wasn't meant to be rude. She kept talking to me and I had no idea most of the time what she was saying because her English is limited but I figured out she had been a nurse in Japan. She was really invested in telling and showing me how to give myself a massage. Ok so that's basically all I have to report. I had the pleasure of experiencing the the exquisite agony of this 85-year-old purveyor of shiatsu! I was visiting LA and began experiencing a lot of back pain so I called in the early afternoon on a Thursday and she made appointment for me at 3 PM. Once she realized I understood a little Japanese she tutored me to hit the main pain centers myself while chastising me for my bad posture Both in Japanese and English. She is delightful! She then broke out the bamboo poles to balance herself on my back and went to work on my lower back with her toes. I have never had such an intense nor satisfying massage in my life. I wish I lived closer just to be able to visit her. A word to those seeking a typical massage, this is real, traditional shiatsu performed by what amounts to a skilled surgeon. This review is so overdue but I thought I would share my experience here. Back in April, I had this sharp pain in my neck and left shoulder and it was getting worse every day, and I didn't know what it was or what was causing it. After reading all the great reviews about this place, I thought I would give it a try. As soon I was ready, lying on my stomach on a bed, Miki-san started to work on me immediately. I tried to tell her a few times where the pain was or what I had been experiencing for the past few weeks, but she didn't seem to be listening to me at all and kept chatting fast and furious like a machine gun. Remember, I'm Japanese, born and raised in Tokyo, so there is absolutely no cultural or language barrier between us. Her massage was not only strong (that's totally okay with me) but also extremely erratic I became skeptical about it. But I thought I should just suck it up if it was going to make my pain go away... After the massage, my pain got worse and so excruciating to the point I couldn't sleep at night and had to ask my husband to drive me to the Urgent Care. I was prescribed Hydrocodone (opioid pain medication) but it didn't do anything. I went to see my GP, she sent me to a physical medicine specialist, and he booked me a physical therapy session. That's when I found out that I had had cervical radiculopathy, which of course couldn't be cured by erratic shiatsu massage. It took me 3 physical therapy sessions to be completely pain free. To be fair, I received her massage at my own will, so I am not blaming her for my condition that got much worse after her massage and deprived me of sleep as well as most of my work-related activities. However, I just wish she had listened to me at least. If she had listened to me and understood what I was suffering from, she would have been able to tell me to go see a doctor instead of receiving shiatsu massage that could get it worse. I am someone who gets massages often but this is the worst massage I've ever had in my life. I really did not want to have to write this review, but apparently it is necessary. The terrible old lady named MIKI who runs this establishment BODY SHAMES the clients. This is SO inappropriate. She made me feel beyond uncomfortable. This woman made me feel so uncomfortable about myself that I left the massage crying. I had to pay $67 for absolute torture. The entire time I was getting the "massage," she literally was just poking me with her fingers and calling me "obese" the entire time. She wanted some long spiel about how I am extremely overweight and how disgusting that is. When, physically, this is not true. Physically I am in the normal weight range for my height and I work out every day. I am a yoga instructor to top this all off. This claim is ridiculous. She kept slapping me back, as if to punish me or something, too. She made me feel EXTREMELY fearful for my safety and uncomfortable.I have gotten MANY high-quality massages at The Montage, Healing Hands, Thai House, and more. I only came here because a friend recommended it. I had to suffer this terrible 85-year-old lady screaming at me that I am overweight and that I am obese. The entire massage. I am not kidding you. I got a 60 minute massage and I tried to get up in the middle and she would not let me leave in the middle. Saying she wasn't done yet. And she never even massage me. This is one of those times where 5 Stars just isn't enough. She is the sweetest woman, so joyful and full of life, and she does an incredible job. She hit all the right spots and relieved my locked up neck and shoulder, gave me some instructions for self-care, and some good life advice. I left feeling completely light and invigorated. For any of the reviews complaining that she was too direct or telling people things they didn't want to hear about themselves, as far as I'm concerned an 85 year old woman who escaped her impoverished village to come to Los Angeles and take care of others can share her wisdom end feedback with me anytime. I was in a serious car accident two and half years ago. I've never felt better after one session with this lady. She is the sweetest most professional talented masseuse I have found this far through my 27 years and throughout all the countries I've visited. I felt brand new when I left I almost cried lol. I read other reviews before deciding to come here so I was well prepared for the scolding and slapping. I couldn't understand half of what she was saying but her brutal honesty made me laugh. She's an 84 year old woman who doesn't care about losing clients who can't handle the truth or don't want to take care of their bodies. She reminds me of Edna from The Incredibles. If you're in pain and need a real massage therapist who's actually going to address your problem areas, she's the real deal. Nothing is more frustrating than asking a masseuse to work on your neck and they only spend literally 30 seconds on it. Save yourself the $40 from a crappy massage in Chinatown and spend only $17 more for a great one with Miki - you won't regret it. She: anytime tomorrow appointment what time? Me: 10am She: what time? Me: 10 She: what time? Me: 1.. 2.. 3.. She: oh 1 pm ok see you tmw one pm. Well thank god i am persistent. Today I had my one o clock appointment. I showed up at exactly 1 because I wasn't sure where to park so I parked at the Tokyo plaza mall and walked. This is a lady who has devoted her life - the past 56 years - to the art of shiatsu. She tried to fix me. I feel brutalized for sure. But I really appreciate her attempt in making me feel lighter. The phone rang halfway through our session and she ran across the room to catch the phone. I heard her say the same thing she said to me in my first phone call and hung up. She came back and massages me for another minute and the phone rang again. She ran across the room and told them no appointments today so sorry. And ran back over to me and said so sorry I don't know why they keep calling. When I am with customer I tell them very short I have no appointments but when no customer I talk longer. If someone is fluent in Japanese can you please help this kind lady out and help her set up a more automated scheduling?? Lol I want her to remain in business because she is that good. Though she probably has built a business off of repeat business and client referrals and doesn't need the walk in appointments. But still. To make her life easier it would be much appreciated. Wow. I didn't think it was possible to come out of a massage worse than when I came in. Unless you're skinny or fit, this is NOT the place to go. I had a tightness on my neck, and I was recommended this place because the woman was legit a Japanese masseuse who knew what she was doing. I read the not so good reviews, so I braced myself for the "Lose weight" spiel. I'm not huge, but I'm bigger than I should be. I knew there was some standing on my back in store, so I told her that I have a lower back issue. First thing she does- she stands on my lower back. Then she chalks everything up to me being overweight...so much so that afterward she SMACKS me on my back like a mom scolds a child. Okay, I get that she's trying to be helpful, but she doesn't listen to what my needs are. So not only do I now have a painful lower back that will render me unable to move for the rest of the day, but I still have that tightness on my neck, and I can't use my left arm. This was my first shiatsu massage and now I'm hooked. I had a really bad pain in my upper back and thought to try something more than a Thai massage. At first I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. Her jam is the classical station and the song playing was Peter and the Wolf. It seemed fitting as I was instructed to strip down in the middle of the room and slip into a grandma-like poplin nightgown and then plop onto the cot. This lady has crazy strong hands! I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry as she dug through my cramped, tight muscles. It was pain that was doing some good. I felt so much better afterwards. I know I will have some bruises tomorrow :) She cracked me up with the comments. I have a really tight back so I'm used to it. She also referenced my nails and said, oh no, that's poison (having nail polish). Location- in the heart of little tokyo. Close to the 101 fwy and the train station. Very accessible. Parking- I just picked the lot next to her shop. It was $7 for the whole day. I knew that I wanted to get ramen and shop afterwards so I was fine with this. There are art museums, restaurants nearby so it's easy to make a day of it. Appt- I called the day before for a Sunday afternoon appt. She's open everyday 12-5 except for Monday's Prices- $57 for an hour! Check it out if you want someone to actually help your muscles. Miki is the best! This was my second Shiatsu massage. I give the massage a 10 out of 10...outstanding. I called the day I wanted to come in and she was able to get me in. The day I went in, she was the only one working in the shop. She needed to tend to the phones and walk-ins. It only happen twice. Because of the quality of the massage, I don't mind a bit. Maybe if it was more frequent, it might have became an issue for me. As Miki was working on me, she pointed out the spots that needed more attention and the spots that I can work on my own. Be sure that you know what a Shiatsu entails. It's a bit painful, but if fills so good. It takes a lot of pressure to work out the knots. A few hours later, I fill the pressure and knots all but gone. The establishment is nothing fancy. It's fairly plain inside. If you need your place to be fancy and willing to settle on a mediocre massage then keep searching. If you want the best Shiatsu at a very reasonable price you found it with Shiatsu Tokyo. I am Japanese. This is traditional shiatsu massage. Maybe not as forceful and deep as I have had in the past, but she knows her stuff very well and I always feel relaxed afterwards. If you are expecting deep tissue or Swedish, you will be disappointed. Shiatsu is considered medical treatment rather than massage. Essentially it is acupuncture but instead of using needles you use your hands elbows and feet to target the pressure points. It is very beneficial for the body and is like a Chinese medicine treatment. It may take some time for you to get an appointment and she may be hard to understand, but if you are interested in this type of treatment this lady has absolutely no peer in Los Angeles. She is the best. She is not going to be around forever (she's 86) so get your appointment in quick! read more

I went here after I got in to a car accident resulting in some pretty gnarly whiplash. Miki knew exactly where I hurt and how to fix it. I'll say that Shiatsu isn't a very "relaxing" experience, not like a normal massage with oil and long strokes but the pressure point and stretches are amazing when your back is really messed up and needs to be corrected and your muscles loosened. I'm writing the day after my massage and while I am definitely more sore than when I went in, it's a good sore. I've also gained a lot of range back in my neck since the accident. I will definitely go back to Miki when I really need it. She also teaches you how to massage yourself at home and which pressure points effect which areas.
