Today I got fillings done for the first time in over 12 years. I have avoided the dentist because of extreme dental phobia. I don't like the sounds of the drill, I don't like the feeling of instruments and hands all up in my mouth, and I always have this odd phobia of drowning in the dentist chair... Not to mention, I have never been able to get numb for fillings..so every dentist visit was a painful one. That all changed today. I was prescribed xanax to take before my appointment, and I went from being so nervous I almost puked, to calm and ready to face the day. It didn't make me feel "out of it", just made my intense fears dissipate. I hear some people react quite strongly to these meds, but me personally I had no problems resuming normal daily activities after my visit, which was nice. I wish I had known about sedation dentistry years ago! I also let them know that I have had a hard time getting numb in the past, so they made sure to get me good and numb. They even numbed my gums with gel before the needle so I didnt even feel the needle! At all! Oh my goodness what a difference being numb makes!!! I still felt the vibrations and some pressure, and just a tiny tiny bit of pain on a really deep filling, but nothing even close to unbearable. The xanax really helped a lot here too. There was still some anxiety once the drill came into play, but nothing I couldn't handle. Whereas normally I would be internally freaking out (i say internally because when I reach that level of nervousness I just freeze, so I actually appear very calm) Dr shields and his team are amazing at listening to my concerns and addressing them. Stacie was in the room with him today and she is the sweetest!!! Everyone I have encountered so far has been kind, gentle, and extremely competent. I have never had such a positive experience getting fillings done! Going to the dentist will never be fave pastime of mine, but I can honestly say I won't be dreading it quite as much anymore. read more

Dr. Shields has sold his practice and moved out of town!! He's gone! The new dentist is Jaden Willard and he has absolutely no compassion and I seriously doubt his ability to be a good dentist!! I have SERIOUS anxiety when it comes to having dental work done and because of my anxiety, he would not work on me and wanted me to see someone else!! I DO NOT, in any way, shape or form, recommend "Dr." Jared Willard for anything!!! If you were a patient of Dr. Shields, I would highly recommend you find a new dentist!! Dr. Shields was always great to me, but this guy is a real egotistical loser...and in general, NOT a nice person!! Trust me on this, people!! The most unprofessional and incompetent staff I've ever encountered in my life from front to back. Dr. Sheilds left now its Willard who took over the practice. I can have a malpractice suit. I had a crown that was misfit and I kept complaining from the beginning that I felt there was a gap and the x-rays even showed it. He told me the gums would grow over it which is not true. No one wanted to listen they just kept ignoring my complaints and nobody wanted to fix it. I even expressed my concerns about decay. It fell off a year later and my tooth did have decay. They offered to put the old one back on which makes no sence to me or I would have to pay for a new one when it was their fault in the first place. I usually seen a different doctor every time I went there also. And they ignored decay in my teeth which I know I had fillings missing which they never addressed the issues and the wait times was very high waiting in the chair. When I got x-rays there they didn't even put a protective bib on me. And as far as the front desk, they would say one date for the next appointment and then hand me a card or text to me something totally different, are they high? I since went to a new dentist and they did put the protective bib on me for x-rays. My insurance was billed for something they never did which made no sence to this new doctors receptionist. So I to pay for proper fitting crown and i'm not let dr willard letting them doing it. Yeah stay away from this dentist, dr. Willard and his staff. He has 2 locations so watch out. read more

Yesterday I was treated for permanent fillings for 2 root canals done last week. Dr. Jared Seal was more than wonderful. His bedside manner is the best of any Dentist I have ever met because he made me feel so comfortable I felt almost nothing at all as I usually hate the drill. We have been going to Dr. Shields offices in Henderson and Summerlin for over 2 years since we moved to Nevada. We are so pleased with the office, the hygienists and especially Dr. Shields. So, my hygienist Kim works at this location (Henderson) on Fridays, which happens to be my day off. So, I change dentist because of her and it works well because of my schedule. Kim is great by the way. I called the office and asked if they took my insurance, they said yes. So, I went ahead a schedule an appointment. On 2/24/12, I went there, fill out the standard forms for new patients, and asked the front desk girl if I would have to pay anything out of my pocket for a x-ray and a cleaning that I would be getting. She said no, my insurance will cover it. I went ahead and got my cleaning, and on 8/1/12. I got an invoice saying that I had owed them $118. I talked to Samantha and she said she would look into it and call me in a few days. Days / Weeks went by, no phone call, no voice-mail. I called, left a message, no return. I finally got a hold of Samantha on 8/13/12 and she said that my insurance only covered part of the $250 bill and that is why I was owed $118. I would be very careful when dealing with this place when it comes to billing. There website says "Out Patients are treated like family!" Maybe like a Stepchild. **Update** 8-23-2012 Shields Family Dentistry did apologize and fixed my issue by crediting me the $118, so I have change my rating. However, I notice that on his website shieldsfamilydentistry.com, it has a link to see their reviews which is totally controlled by them as my comment was taken off within a matter of hours. If you are scared of the dentist, Dr Shields and his team will make you forget you are at the dentist :-) 2 locations here in town, 1 in Summerlin by Town Center Drive and 95, the other by Whitney Ranch. His staff is friendly and always helpful. I prefer the Summerlin location. While Dr Shields works on your mouth, you still have mountain view consolation LOL. Had couple crowns and deep cleaning done. I PROMISE YOU the anesthesia doesn't hurt. Dr Shields is very gentle and patient. During his consultation, he will tell you exactly what needs to be done, his staff will provide you a detailed cost sheet. No surprise and they don't rush you or try to sell you a water pik or a electronic toothbrush Office hours are 9am-5pm but they always try to accommodate you. I tried couple dentists in town before I choose Dr Shields to be my official dentist. his office is little far from where I live or work but the drive is worth when you found a good Dentist. This dentist is the best! His staff are warm and friendly and he knows how to give anesthetic injections, without it hurting. I went to a dentist that was a chain in the Southwest part of town and had a horrible experience just from X-rays. I moved out there so wanted a closer dentist. The girls upfront helped me with all my financial questions..I have never had a better cleaning! i am truly sorry that my first review is going to be a negative one . I'll start with the positive though . The dentist and staff were very friendly and informative...done The office and equipment are a bit aged , most likely from the 70's . I prefer a more modern ambiance and feel more confident with modern dental equipment .But that is not my beef . I was billed 35.00 for xrays that were supposed to be part of my free exam and cleaning . My new Humana insurance gives me once a year a free checkup and cleaning . They directed me to an affiliated provider . When I made an appointment i made sure they indeed carried the Humana plan i have and that my visit is covered as free . About 6 weeks prior I had a dental emergency and at that time they did a full exam . So i requested they skip the exam and just do the cleaning . They stated that Nevada law required all new patients to get the exam . i said okay but i explained that i have no money for the problems with my teeth . The hygienist does the exam and cleaning , a very nice woman . i explain that some people can afford the huge dental expenses that occur and others have insurance and then there are people like myself that can only handle dental emergency's and those are financially backbreaking . The dentist , also a nice guy , then explains all the problems that need attending in my mouth , which i already know , but i patiently let him pitch me the 3850 plan to fix my teeth . Finally i get up to depart and the billing girl gives me a bill of 35.00 for my free visit .She says the exam is free but the xrays are 35.00 . How can you do an exam without xrays , is it even possible . If xrays are part of the exam and the exam is free , how can you charge a person 35.00 . i feel sorry for the poor souls that actually pay this ridiculous charge . So the cleaning is free but the polish used on my teeth is 20.00 ? How about the visit is free but we need to charge you for rinsing your mouth out ? I refuse to pay ? This is by far the best dentist in town. I have taken my 89 year old mom to 5 other Dentists who were not sensitive to her needs and were unable to fit her partials properly Shields Family dentistry is great at cleanings and accommodates with appointments. . Dr shields takes his time and is a perfectionist. He made the best partial Denture for my mom. She looks fantastic and still comments everyday how comfortable the denture is. I met them via my attorney's recommendation, after having an accident that broke my front teeth.
