We've been to other revolving sushi restaurants in different cities, so we were excited to give Umai a try--and it delivered a really fun experience. The space is cozy and inviting, with booths wrapped around the conveyor belt so you can immediately start eyeing the plates gliding by. The sushi on the belt was fresh and tasty, though we noticed the selection leaned a bit heavily toward spicy‑mayo‑based rolls. Everything we tried was delicious, but we would have loved to see a little more variety for those who prefer something less saucy. Thankfully, the touchscreen ordering system made it easy to branch out. You can order drinks and à la carte sushi directly from the screen, and your items arrive on a dedicated upper‑deck conveyor that zips your order straight to your table. I haven't done the sushi go round before, and my guy was excited to go during date weekend, so go we did! Overall, it's a lot of fun, but maybe a bit overstimulating? You are seated at a tablet in front of a conveyor belt with the sushi making it's way around the restaurant. You can take whatever catches your eye as it passes in front of you, or you can order from the tablet. If you order from the tablet, little cars bring the food on a second, higher conveyor belt above the first one, or sometimes a robot brings it to your seat. So there are 2 moving belts, robots, and servers. It's a lot! Fun, but be aware. It is cool that you can see things moving past and try different things. The plates on the belt are also less than a full order, which means you can try more things, if that's your style. Service is pretty quick since you're helping yourself from the belt. They do a good job making sure there is a variety of items on the belt and seemed to restock pretty quickly. You can mostly chose from rolls and nigiri. I do like American style rolls, and enjoyed the options. The guy prefers nigiri. We ordered some tempura and picked some nigiri from the menu as well. I really enjoyed the veggie tempura. They have good salmon - we tried the peppered salmon, which he thought was too much, but was smokey and peppery, and I enjoyed. There was also a spicy yellowtail, and plain salmon that was also nice quality. We shared an ice cream sundae with one of the little fish shaped cakes for dessert, which was really good. I liked the little cake with the red bean paste inside. It was fun and pretty low key. read more

Ordered delivery and I'm honestly still thinking about this meal. First of all, it arrived so fast and everything was packaged perfectly. Nothing spilled, everything still looked fresh, which already put me in a good mood. Now the food... I cannot believe how good the lobster roll is. If you haven't had it, you haven't lived. Always on the hunt to try new sushi spots and this one did not disappoint. We went on a Friday night for dinner with the family. Ordering is very easy to do on a tablet at your table or you can help yourself from the conveyor belt which was very fun for our kids. Drinks were amazing as I had the lychee martini and my husband had a beer and some sake. All the sushi we ate was fresh and absolutely delish. One of my favorite bites was the seared salmon nigiri. I tried a revolving sushi restaurant for the first time while I was traveling last April, and I remember thinking to myself "I wish we had one of these at home. I'd be there all the time!" Cut to a short time later and I hear that Umai Revolving Sushi is opening up - huzzah! The sushi / sashimi / nigiri menu is decent, with various appetizers and bites on the menu - as well as cocktails and desserts. The price points of the various items all seem fitting - which is helpful, because I like to enjoy a number of different plates. I do wish there had been a bit more variety on the menu, and I wish that items had been added to the conveyor belt a bit more regularly. I know there's a balance because they don't want items out on the conveyor for too long either, but the belt itself was pretty empty when I last visited. While service is minimal in this kind of restaurant, I've always experienced empty plates being cleared regularly (so as not to take up too much space). One thing I do remember from my previous revolving sushi restaurant experience - that I didn't see at Umai - was that the seating area was immediately wiped down/cleaned once a diner left their spot after the end of their meal. This included wiping down the tablet that you can use to order dishes. I didn't see that at Umai when other patrons were leaving after finishing their meal. TL;DR. A good experience at Umai, but there are also areas for improvement. I wouldn't mind going back. :) read more

I'd definitely return! I thought the quality of the sushi to price point was well balanced. I really enjoyed the fun/unique dining via conveyor belt. It's casual yet could be a decently intimate date place since there's a lot to talk about just from the shared experience and selecting different items. It's pretty nifty, you just select your sushi from the conveyor belt and it gets automatically charged to your tab. Be careful, you could easily rack up a decent bill but let's be honest, sushis never really a cheap food option. My server was very attentive. Continuously clearing plates. There's a call server button right on the tablet at your seating area. You can order drinks as well as more specific or larger sushi orders from the tablet. They also have desert options. Ice cream, fried mochi and Taiyaki. I ate mostly salmon selections and all were wonderfully tender yummy salmon with no fishy taste of older or not quality fish. My only complaint is that I would have liked a few more items to be available via the conveyor belt. Theres some rolls that are only available via the tablet that look pretty good but I don't want that many pieces or to purchase a $16 roll. My favorite sushi restaurant in Rochester this far. Also probably the most expensive the way I eat... Everything tastes so fresh here. I love the concept and the variety of the rolls and sushi that come out the conveyor. I can easy spend $50-70 ordering all of my favs. The one thing that I don't like is that it can feel kind of cold when they place party of 1 people automatically at the bar and not a small table. I don't know if they have small booths on the other side bc I've never been past the bar haha. read more

However, I was able to get lots of stuff I would still eat - they have cucumber rolls, avocado rolls, veggies rolls. They also have chicken teriyaki, steak teriyaki, soups, fried rice, alcoholic beverages, and dessert! So even if you aren't a fish and raw fish fan, I recommend! Serving sizes were good for the price! I was able to get two rolls and fried rice for $20! The cucumbers and avocados were really fresh, and really good! I tried a bite of steak teriyaki, and it was great! Very tender and flavorful. Fried rice was good! Waitress kept our waters filled and was very polite. Came by for dinner on a Monday long weekend night. we got sat within minutes. It was our first time at a sushi belt restaurant. We ordered the shrimp tempura roll with eel sauce on top. It was so good. We also got the black spider toll, it was sooooo delicious. So fresh and so flavourful. These were fresh rolls that were made to order. Unlike a lot of sushi places that have lunch specials including soup, a drink, etc, this is NOT the place to go. We left hungry, because at $6 minimum for 3 bites of sushi, we didn't go too crazy. We were seated, then you just take whatever you'd like off of the moving belt and you're automatically charged. The cheapest rolls we had were $2 per piece. Too much for us to ever go back again. So impressed with Umai Revolving Sushi. I had a wonderful experience dining here on my birthday. The restaurant is on the smaller side and the booths are packed in. It did feel a little tight at our booth with our party of 5. The staff stays on top of picking up your dishes, so we always had plenty of room at the table. We all loved the adorable drink robot. The robot brings an additional bit of novelty and fun to the experience. Our server explained how things work when it comes to ordering and picking from the conveyor belt. It was very easy to follow. We loved the ability to choose from a variety of readily available smaller plates. We were able to order our favorites on the kiosk and try exciting new dishes with the small plates. The sushi and entrees were of great quality. Some of the best local sushi I have had recently. The peppered salmon sushi and the Godzilla roll were my favorites. Everything was perfectly made. This is my new favorite restaurant! My dreams materialized in the form of this restaurant's revolving sushi belt. The sushi here is amazing. The udon is fire, the best I've ever had. The belt is such a good way to try different rolls that are usually super expensive - they have 3 pieces on each plate so it's $4-7 per plate compared to a $16-19 special roll. The speed at which they deliver the dishes you order from the iPad on the top conveyor belt is lightening fast. You can't get this kind of quality food and service anywhere. It's seriously a blessing to have this in the area, I would love one to come to Buffalo. It's super cute inside. Watching sushi revolve around you is one of my new fav forms of entertainment. Sushi quality was fine, everything was fresh and well made but the price was closer to a fine dining sushi place than a self order conveyor belt, about $6 for 3 pieces on the belt and the orders we got were $15-19. This conveyor belt sushi place was a cool and fun place to visit. Very easy to navigate the process. You take the sushi off of the conveyor belt and it keeps track to create a bill when you are done. If you do not like any of the sushi dishes going around on the conveyor belt you can place an order from the menu and it will come on the conveyor belt to your table. We had orders the pork gyoza and several rolls. These included the salmon lover, amazing, angel, volcano, Godzilla and sunshine. The rolls going continuously on the conveyor belt are 3 pieces of sushi. The ones where you order are bigger rolls including up to 4 pieces. The food was very fresh and flavorful! read more

We were never there before. A young unfriendly girl sat us down and left. We didn't know what in the world we were supposed to do. We just started picking things off the conveyor like we saw others doing. but didn't realize we could also order things fresh until we were $70 in. The restaurant was absolutely freezing the entire time we were there. Everyone in the place had to leave their coats on to eat an expensive dinner. *Not a good dinner spot!!* Maybe ok for an overpriced lunch because it's quick, the food is already cooked. Then the bill has suggested gratuity (18/20/22 %) as if they served us. What does the robot need to feed its children? Maybe the robot should give a little explanation of how things work. I ordered a pick up order through Door Dash of tamago, inari, and the Oshinko roll. Unfortunately, I didn't care for the tamago or inari. The tofu skin of the inari was very soggy and felt like it had been sitting around for a while. The tamago didn't taste fresh, either. The Oshinko roll was good, but nothing better than the sushi at Wegmans. I wanted to give this place a fair chance, because even though I'm not interested in the revolving experience (I'd rather order what I want up front), the reviews for the food itself were good. This revolving sushi bar is the perfect example of "don't bother calculating how much money you spent on your sushi!" They don't take reservations which sucks, because it was very busy when we got there. You join a wait-list and we were told it would take about 20-30 mins, which it did. They have a bar that you can wait at, and they have some interesting cocktails but space is a huge problem in this restaurant. So, it would be better to join the wait-list and then just go wait in your car. Once you are seated, they tell you to start picking any rolls you like off the conveyor belt. If you want something specific, you order it off the touchscreen in front of you. My brother and I lost count of how many rolls we tasted. I think we did at least 10 different kinds. I could not tell you which ones we loved and which ones we didn't because they all meshed into a gigantic roll at the end lol. I can say that most of the rolls we tried, we loved. I also ordered the matcha ice cream, which was excellent! This is an expensive restaurant, primarily because you lose count of how many rolls you pick. Surprisingly, we stayed below $100, but just about. This is definitely an experience to have. They have a huge parking lot so don't worry about parking. read more

This place was so cool! Very expensive ($85 for the two of us) but sooooo cool! You can sit at a table and pick plates off the rotating belt and the belt has cameras and sensors so it knows how much to bill you at the end. It was nice not having to wait for a waitress for our food. We could dig right in! If you wanted anything in specific, you can order directly from the menu and there is a belt on top that will deliver your order for you! All of the sushi we had was absolutely delicious. I would happily order sushi from here to go! My only complaint was that we ordered the ice cream specifically to be served by the cool robot but some boring human brought it. 4.5 stars for novelty and originality but 3.5 stars for sushi itself. Conveyor belt sushi has been around for decades, but this is new to Rochester. The restaurant makes good use of the space with bar-like seating occupying most of the restaurant. In addition to the pre-made items that come around on the conveyor belt, you can also order a la carte, which get delivered contact-free via a tram. There's also a robot that delivers you water, wasabi and ginger. All that is cool, but the sushi itself is just average. Quality to price ratio-wise, I really think Wegman's sushi wins out. I probably will come back eventually at some point, but not in a rush to do so. Definitely worth checking out though. read more

Umai is a clean, innovative, and minimalistic sushi restaurant but misses the mark on selling their main commodity- the sushi itself. From the logo projector, robot who delivers your drinks, to the tablet-centric menu it's convenient and tech heavy on almost all levels. Your tablet gets your drinks, a la cart items, main items, and calling your server for anything miscellaneous. We only needed our server for wasabi and our check, everything else was hands-off. The items on the conveyor were simple rolls and nigiri, no sashimi were available. The nigiri had a lot of rice and all items were about room temp.... Which made us wonder what their process is with switching out "older" plates on the conveyor. Lastly, almost all the rolls aside from the tempura broke apart once they were within our chopsticks. Coming from trying other conveyor sushi joints in NY as well as in Asia, Umai is someone of all show and no go. I hope their food quality steps up as this young establishment develops. read more

I've been here twice now. We're excited to have this in the area. Be aware, no reservations and it can fill up quickly. Service is friendly. They take the time to explain the process. You pay by the plate or order off the screen. This can add up quickly as you're getting fresh made, high quality sushi. For beverages, there is a bar, Pepsi products, tea or water. Unlike videos of similar places in Japan, there is no slot to drop your dishes in (enough plates dropped and you get a cheesy prize). The plates are collected as you go and staff is constantly checking. If there is a particular roll you like, you may be better off ordering a full roll off the tablet instead of by the plate. Special orders are zoomed to you off the top conveyor belt and some items may be delivered by robot, which is fun! Odd thing is you request your check on the tablet but there is no option to pay via the tablet. Maybe to stop dine and dashers. But it can hold things up when you're ready to leave. read more
