I visited Shiki Shabu two times within a month. I found both experiences a bit troubling. The atmosphere is lovely and the decor is upscale. We found the portions to be somewhat small, and strangely, no dipping sauces were provided until we asked about them. Solid hot pot place located on Moody St in Waltham. They offer a 15% discount special if you eat after 8pm. Clean place and good service. Really like the meat quality here. Probably the best meat quality compared to other hot pot locations that I've been to. They offer a variety of broths. I like this place. My husband and I went there for Valentine's Day. They were super busy. We made a reservation for a table online, however, when we came in our table was not ready because they were too busy. And then they had a line after us. But the manager somehow resolved the situation and we did not wait for so long. The service was great, and our server was nice. We ordered some meat and meatballs that we never tried before. The servers were very pleasant, and the prices were reasonable. I ordered a set of beef, which came with a small vegetable plate and choice of noodle or rice. Beef was good quality, and I wish they had a bit more vegetables, such as cabbage, bok choy, or watercress. It's a great find in the greater Boston area, and I'm thrilled that they opened in Waltham. First of all I'm half Asian, so I have eaten enough hotpot in my life to be the judge. A preview to my later essay: don't come. The soup is decent and price (for the soup only) is actually affordable. The meat and vegetables are okay in terms of freshness, but the portion is PATHETIC. if you ordered the prime beef, which is somewhere priced between 18-23, you literally got no more than 6-8 pieces of tiny thin-cut beef slice, I dunno how other customer feel about that, but you could literally walk into any other hotpot place and get a full plate of meat for something around 30. For more reference, two of us ordered two plates of meat (1 of it is a set so it comes with veggies and a small bowl of noodle and the soup), a plate of beef tongue, and another vegetable, our bill went up to $100, and we weren't even close to feeling full when left. The environment is okay for a casual dining. But I expect larger portion for a $50 per person in waltham. Service is okay, nothing to complain here. Just don't come. It was fairly empty inside - the restaurant itself is really really cute, bright, well decorated, and very new. The broth tastes homemade and super fresh - not like someone used premade broth packets or just filled it with MSG. My partner and I got the tomato beef broth. Order meat plates individually - you get a lot less from the combo plates. The prices at Shiki are pretty high - for just two people including tip I paid 160 ish or so, so if you're used to getting a lot and paying not too much like some Chinese or Taiwanese style hotpots, this place is not for you. It's very much styled after Japanese sukiyaki places - would recommend staying away from some fish, or at least the salmon - we had four small pieces that were very frozen and kind of tasteless for 8 dollars an order. When we arrived we were told that they had just given away our table, which was the only area that could accommodate a party our size. The host said we would have to sit at two separate booths. It was obvious that the guests that they had given our table away to had been there for at least some time, because the pots were boiling and the servers were bringing out their food as we spoke. The rest of the restaurant was empty so it was clear that the host had screwed up. But instead of apologizing for giving away our table he insisted that it was our fault that we didn't arrive on time and that he had tables for us, we'd just need to sit separately. Overpriced, they charge for sauces "sa cha" which typically comes with hotpot. The veggies that come with the set are surprisingly small, example they give you 3 baby bok choys and 2 leaves of napa as the main greens and then a few small pieces of woods eat and carrots. Takoyaki is very good though, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Overall the place is clean and new, but not sure how the steam from the hotpot will change the wood veneers everywhere.
