Let's make this clear: the bakery is awesome. It's a good solid 5. They have a lot of tasty treats and samples (assuming you don't go at a busy time or at the end of the day) for you to explore what kind of treats does the trick for you that day. You can tell their bakery is popular, because they have baskets for people to shop for multiple goods. It also seems to be the spot a lot of folks come to shop for their pastry treats for the week. Everything else is what brought this rating down. Do not try their hot sandwiches at least. I had the ocean grill (tuna panini) and... the cheese was basically still frozen?? Nothing about the sandwich was warm?? And they had the tiniest bag of homemade chips that don't really taste like chips? And they have no main place for water, so you have to ask for it and they give you the tiniest cup for it. They took over 20 min with my sandwich, that wasn't even warm. They forgot it the first time, so they did give us free donuts to compensate for the time. It may have been their saving grace, because their pastries are awesome. Average customer service. Yesterday i had a chance to go back and buy yogurt ice cream another more time( i always buy from there). After 5th bite i taste like the milk went bad and sour in a kind that milk not supposed to be, plus fizzy taste (if you can imagine the taste of milk in the yogurt went so bad). I decided to call back to the store because i already drove half way to my home. Surprisingly, the guy who i complaint to, he seemed doesnt care at all from my story. Two and a half stars. They were big on samples, and had the blinds properly closed against the baked goods. Inventory was on the low side, but I just read that as the popular items are almost always going to be as fresh as possible. Pastry vitrine filled out attractively. They have a different set of bingsoo offered here than at the Annandale location (and less weird buns than at the Rockville location), so I opted for a red bean boba since it's a surprisingly less common boba flavor than taro, on the east coast. Unfortunately the smoothie was silty and creamy from the heavily blended azuki beans, and strangely tasted like an ashtray. I don't know if it was the tinniness of the beans carrying over or traces of a poorly cleaned blender, but... nose wrinkles every other sip. Pearls were cooked through perfectly though, and not too much ice blended in; only a little bit at the core partially refroze in the warm weather. Rather lackluster beverage options in the fridge on the side. Rounding up for the clean cafe tables, friendly service, and pretty cakes. Maybe I'll get around to trying the breakfast menu if I can ever make it over to Shilla before 11 am. read more

I am a fan of Shilla! But this location is often a hit or miss. Maybe I'm just spoiled because the Annandale location is 5 minutes from my house and is always fully stocked. On multiple occasions I have come here well before closing time and their stock of goodies is almost gone! In particular this past Saturday, as we were waiting for a table at Iron Age, we decided to drop by since it's two doors down. The place looked like it was robbed or something-- seriously the place was CLEANED OUT and only a few random pastries remained on the shelves. In addition to the lack of items, the iced green tea here is watery and they are stingy with the matcha. What I do love about this place is that it is huge and has very modern decor. It has a relaxing ambiance. They also offer mango buttercream bread which they don't at the other locations. (This is different from the mango roll bread which I usually get at the Annandale Shilla.) Their yogurt bread is also deliciously made using soboro bread and it comes in a smaller size as opposed to only huge loaf options at the other locations. Their sweet Korean iced coffee is also heavenly and made really well. It has a distinct flavor and is just a great complement to pastries... if they had any LOL jk. I never get the bubble tea here because it's made with powder and their bing soo is also a hit or miss. I haven't really tried anything but the breads here, but they have boba and bingsu as well plus some whole and sliced cakes, french macarons, etc. It's basically dessert heaven. Tried a variety of items: Whole blueberry cake: very good, not too sweet, cream is light. Had a little blueberry filling (thick gel like sauce) and not too many blueberries. Can't eat too much of this cake (similar to how I can't eat too much Cool Whip but can eat tons of real whipped cream). More blueberries would make it better. Surprised the cake still tasted good a few days later. Chocolate buttercream cake slice - similar to the fresh cream cakes but has that buttery richness to it (most likely due to the frosting). Lava cakes - not to sweet as well. More of a dark chocolate. Chocolate is better than the caramel version. Blueberry cream - looked like it was blueberry cream between two soft pancakes. This was good. Would buy this again. Corn cake? - Not sure if this was mislabeled as the filling had something red inside. Also had white cream inside. Looked like a whoppie pie and the cakey part was a thicker consistency. This was on the sweeter side compared to the rest of the items we tried. Taro mango cake roll huge slice - this had subtle taro and mango filling. Good for more of a snack rather than a dessert. Not very sweet at all and it still tasted soft after a few days (and in the 'fridge). I think I'd rather try the coffee flavor next time as this flavor was quite subtle. Strawberry mousse cake (individual serving) - this was disappointing. It reminded me of Yoplait whipped yogurt with some thin slices of cake. Was expecting that the mousse would be more decadent rather than Yoplait consistency. Whole cake selection was plenty on a Friday night at 7pm (before father's day weekend). Before today, I've been here maybe 2 or 3 times. All of those times, I have been disappointed. I only come here when I don't feel like driving to Falls Church to get some boba. And each time, I've tried different flavors to see if anything would be good but nope same bad stuff from last time. I honestly don't see what the hype is about. They don't use real fruits, they use powered bags of fruits. You can definitely tell the difference between a boba tea from Shilla and boba from Song Que at Eden Center. I mean I guess it's korean boba?! I don't know but I'd much rather have real fruit in my drink. This is probably the last time I'll be coming back. I've tried the mango, straight up the fakest mango ever and you can still taste like chunks of the powder. The coconut was ok, way toooo sweet. The strawberry even tasted funny, I mean you can't get strawberry?! I give them a one star because I do like some stuff in their bakery. I would rather not eat their samples though unless you come when its open because its been there all day and some lady who just picked her nose put her hand in there. I'm learning that Korean places like to ROCK IT OUT! The music was kicking and I felt like I was in Korea without the expensive plane ticket. There was even a cute anime-looking girl serving goodies behind the counter. I went here looking for cream puffed pastries and I was successful! They have a full to-go boxes with mini puffs ready for sale in their glass case. I also checked out some of the goodies in the baskets. Lots of breads and cakes. Many baskets were empty and I was there at 7PM on a Sunday night and people were sitting enjoying the food and others were scrounging like at a flea market trying to get a nugget. I will be back. I bought the puffs, a double chocolate cake, and chocolate roll with cream filling. The puffs were delicious with a pudding-like filling. I'll have the cakes another day. read more

Omg I just walked into this place and it's amazing! Instead of watching all the goodies and not be able to choose because they all look good they had samples for almost EVERYTHING! I got the pork bun with the avocado drink and I asked them to heat the bun which they did, the avocado drink came tasting like a green vanilla milk, no avocado taste, I felt it's a color without real avocados which was a bummer because I love the taste of avocados with honey. they're nice tho and the treats here are the best! 7/21/20 This store is more spacious than the Tyson's Corner one, but the friendliness was lacking. There were three males three who reminded me of the Stray Kids photos I saw earlier in the day. The place was nearly empty and I really thought they were getting ready to close. Turns out they close at 10pm from what I heard. Most of the food was gone. Evidently they have had a busy day this far. Still, not one of the boy band members asked if help was need. They were to busy talking to each other than asking me if I needed assistance. I found some brownies that would go well with the vanilla pudding I would be buying later on....Mmm, sugar free vanilla sounds delicious...actually, I wonder how an avocado vanilla mixed pudding would taste? A vegan style I made when I worked at Marriott years ago...oh, and that pudding was a chocolate mix...yuck, but I am digressing. Overall, if there was a blueberry muffin that I have seen in other Shilla Bakeries, I would have bought two instead of the brownies. Oh well. Definitely a hit or miss with this bakery! I came here growing up so there's feelings of nostalgia every time I come here. The buns and breads are usually always nice and fluffy. Recently, my family became obsessed with the tiramisu cake. We got it for Mom's birthday and then immediately wanted another one for Dad's birthday the following month. This was yesterday. The tiramisu cake was quite a disappointment. It was way too sweet (if you're anything like my family, we don't like super sweet things - which is why we thought we had found the perfect cake). But this one caused a round of tummyaches that went well into the night and followed us to bed. I ordered the honeydew boba tea and it just wasn't like before. This one looked like it was already half melted (because their texture is more of a slushie) and the overall taste made me regret not popping into kungfu tea instead. They were kind enough to gift us two buns (not sure if it's because we purchased over $50 or because they were trying to get rid of it) but it was a strawberry cream flavor and definitely not something we wanted - even at the free price point. Hands down this place makes a darn delicious cake. Yes, it is expensive, but man, it is just so yummy. I'm not a dessert nor cake person, but seriously, I will inhale their cakes! It is super light and airy and lightly sweet; none of the super heavy sugar laden buttercream you get at the american grocery stores. An 8in cake clocks in around $35. They have plenty of samples of their baked goods. Some of the fillings are interesting and not up my alley, but at least you get to try them first. My visit to this bakery was very mediocre, at most. I remember when I came here when it first opened and the red bean bingsoo was pretty good. The ratio of fruit, mochi, mixed grain powder, red bean and milk ice was well balanced back then. The one I got tonight was a bit different from what I remember. There were very little fruits added and waaay too much red bean. It definitely overwhelmed everything else in the bingsoo with its sweetness. There was also something off with the milk ice. It's suppose to melt evenly as you eat it but there were huge chunks of ice just refusing to melt. Since we were in a hurry, we just put the whole chunks in our mouths. I'm really hoping that the pastry here is still good as I remember. It's unfortunate how the quality can change as time progresses and this was one of those cases with my bingsoo experience. read more

Pros: I've been here twice and the customer service was good both times. The facility is clean, open and airy. There are tons of baked goods to try, they have a full bakery and sandwich shop. Loaves of bread are put out often and free samples are out for the taking...if you're into that sort of thing (it's not encased, so I can imagine flies also sampling the goods- consequently, I'm not into buffets either). They also sell breakfast. Cons: So I really went for the boba. I'm a huge fan and had been craving it for far too long. Unfortunately, my expectations weren't fully met, as the taro boba was too sweet (my face cringed on the first sip and I put some ice in it to tame it) and the boba was a tad to mushy. Sigh. The baked goods were pretty good though. Some were still warm as I examined individually wrapped packages. I'll be back, of course, but never again for the tongue wrenching taro tea. read more

The birthday cake I reserved was too sweet and way overpriced. $35 for a 6 inch cake. Not anymore.

I had the daunting task of helping plan a wedding for 200 people in one month on an extreme budget. While most bakeries need a few months in advance to plan a wedding day creation, Shilla was able to step in and provide a beautiful and delicious cake at a very affordable price point in about a week's notice. A day before the wedding I stopped by the bakery to drop off a few wedding flowers which they were able to incorporate into the overall design of the cake. I picked up the cake the day of the wedding and was able to easily assemble the tiers at the reception with no trouble at all (except for the fact that I did not place it on a level table but that is a story for another day). If you are looking for an affordable wedding cake provider or even a simple birthday cake I highly recommend Shilla Bakery. PS: My two favorite cake flavors are their chiffon cake with fruit filling and fresh whipped cream icing and their mocha cake! Their bingsoo is great. This Shilla is better than the Fairfax, VA location.. but not as good as the Annandale, VA location. This one is bigger though and is never as busy as the Annandale location.. probably because it is slightly hidden compared to the Annandale one which is located right on Little River Turnpike. Went in as a first timer after a heaping helping of So Korean BBQ...needed a cup of joe and my brother recommended the shaved ice dish (Bing Soo - Patbingsu)...I had the fruit Bing Soo and it, along with the coffee was delicious. Had dinner here last night after a final run to the old condo to clean out the refrigerator - I've been eyeballing this place for a while and decided it was time for another culinary adventure! There were a number of people on hand - predominantly Asian folks - which is, on my food barometer - usually a good sign! The menu offerings are not extensive, they offer several traditional cold sandwiches - such as a Club Sandwich. They also offer hot Panini sandwiches and a small selection of American salads as well as what I would call Asian fusion salads. Now to the part of the menu for which I have zero experience - they had a couple of items I had never heard of - they all started with the word "Bing." Anyone care to educate me?! The only thing I have experience with - with that name are "Bing Cherries." Also - I think the other thing on the menu was something called "Boro?" Anyhow, I ordered the Club Sandwich and a bottle of water. As I sat down to wait for my sammich, I looked around and took in the ambiance of the place. Shilla Patisserie is an queer bird indeed when it comes to decor. It's as if furniture styles from some sort of Asian culture got mixed in with tables and chair that you'd expect to be sitting in Guy Fieri's house - blazing red neon modern diner tables with matching chairs; fluorescent yellow tables and chairs that are ready to glow! And then the lighting is a bit of an eclectic mix of fixtures, lamp shades of a wide variety of colors and styles... It'd as if the designer hiccuped and everything got thrown into a blender. But it's not an uncomfortable place - it seems to work in an odd sort of way. My sandwich came up - it is one of the best Club Sandwiches I've eaten in a long time! The wheat bread was lightly toasted - but not so much that it was dry and crumbly. The turkey was moist and plentiful, the lettuce and tomato fresh, - if I could change anyone thing - it would have been to have a slightly meatier, chewier bacon. The bacon on this sandwich was really ultrathin and overly crisp - meaning that it was splintering and falling out of the sandwich. Shilla also has a lot of really cool looking desserts and birthday style cakes for sale - as well as a section containing traditional Asian bakery goods. As always, I love Shilla. The Centreville location is the largest out of the others in the area (Annandale and Fairfax) and the one I visit the most. I feel like the Centreville location is also the busiest. It's packed almost every time I go. Parking is always convenient and plenty. And I love their items! My parents love the milk or raisin bread. I love the red or mung bean paste-filled breads and the chestnut breads! Did I mention the selection of cute little patisserie items and cakes (also sold by-the-slice)? I tried a fresh fruit cake from here that was delicious. But most of all, for that asian experience: the bingsoo. I love the fresh fruit or green tea bingsoos. They served the green tea bingsoo with kiwi, whereas the annandale location served it with honeydew. I don't know if it was a seasonal thing, but I prefer the kiwi. The centreville location doesn't put the green tea syrup on the bingsoo though, like Annandale does. At least not that I've noticed. I like the fact that the Centreville mochi has a firmer texture than that of Annandale's. Shilla is where bingsoo go to die. I was so repulsed by my last visit here that I will have to think twice before stepping foot into this establishment again. I got their mixed fruit bingsoo and completely regretted my decision the moment I saw it. It looked so unappetizing--- imagine a pile of shaved ice with some pink syrup on top. The fruits (bananas, grapes, kiwis, strawberries & pineapples) inside didn't integrate well with the bingsoo. Even worse, they were not fresh. The pineapples were definitely canned and tasted like nail polish remover--- most likely spoiled. The kiwis also tasted like they were in the process of rotting. If I wanted shaved ice and rotten fruits, I could have stayed at home. There's plenty of that s*** in my fridge & trashcan. Despite my negative experience with the bingsoo here, the establishment still offers other viable goodies. Shilla, in my eyes, is closer to 2.5 stars. However, I am giving the establishment a 1 star because if they're okay with serving rotten fruits to their customers, I am curious to know what else they're okay with doing that we don't know about. Let me start off by saying I had medium expectations for this place. I went in knowing it wasn't going to be the best shaved ice of my life, but being that Shilla tends to be frequented often by people in this area, I figured it wouldn't be horrible either. Now, half of a star because I ate some of their bakery goods for free. Another star because their "fruit" bingsoo had mochi in it. If it weren't for these two things, I would have given a half of a star because I'm not that much of a jerk. Now the "fruit" bingsoo is what my girlfriend and I came here for, but what we got was something else. Don't get me started on how they announced that our order was ready in Korean such that I did not know to come pick it up. And even such, I decided to go see if it was our "fruit" bingsoo, but when I looked it seemed as if it was just a bingsoo with some pink condensed milk flavoring on top. Well, little did I know that they hid the "fruit" underneath the top layers . Anyways after being confused and being told that this was indeed the "fruit" bingsoo, I took it to our table and saw that it indeed had fruit in it, just buried underneath so you can't actually tell how much they skimp on the fruit. Wait, did I say fruit, I meant canned fruit. Yes, please tell me that I'm paying $6.89 for a "canned fruit bingsoo" next time. I don't know how other people are raving about how great their bingsoo is. If you want to know what fruit they put in it, just google "canned fruit cocktail." Their poor attempt at a "fruit" bingsoo has been noted. I would argue that they should be paying people to come and eat it, yes, it's that pedestrian of an attempt. Come back?
