I had the chance to enjoy Shimogamo for a birthday dinner, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The restaurant was quite busy, which isn't surprising since I've only heard positive things about it. From the moment we sat down, staff was very attentive, helpful with menu recommendations, and very knowledgeable about all of the options on the menu. I started with an order of their garlic chili edamame, which really hit the spot, though it was spicier than expected. I then ordered their citrus roll, which came recommended by our waiter. Then the miso soup, this was the best miso soup I've had, it tastes different than the regular miso I've had in other places, love the miso flavor. Then Truffle Hamachi: you can smell the truffle right off the bat, the hamachi is fresh, topped with micro greens 10/10. The signature hand roll set: all were delicious, the sashimi in them were fresh and other ingredients complement each hand roll very well. I also tried the hamachi line roll set: I like the light spicy/lime seasoning on top of it. Then we got matcha cheesecake for dessert, it is not overly sweet with the right balance of the tart from the strawberry. It was definitely warm inside but as long as the fish is cold, I'm fine with a little heat. As a fan of their Chandler location, I knew I had to eventually pop into their Gilbert location. Truly a gorgeous space. The bar was lovely, the staff was knowledgeable and polite, and the windows made the space bright and inviting (their Chandler location definitely being darker). It's the kind of place you go to when you want to support local and dine well. Cocktails, garlic dashi fries ($12), fried shishito peppers ($12), ceviche spoons ($18), hamachi lime crudo ($22), two orders of bluefin crudo ($36), a hamachi lime roll ($22), and a caramel miso cheesecake ($9) were ordered and consumed with vigor. Came here for a celebration with a group of girls with original intentions of an omakase but we didn't know we had to do an advanced reservation so it was a bummer. We instead explored the menu and had a variety of items. Small Plates: -Fried Shishito peppers - unavailable so we got -Fried brussel sprouts - with sweet soy sauce and garlic which was delicious. -Agedashi dofu - a soulful bowl of deep fried breaded tofu potato starch in a savory dashi broth Nigiri/sashimi: -seared salmon - a staple to always count on -unagi roll Signature rolls: -double salmon roll- anything salmon is on my list -yuzu tuna roll- the yuzu citrus gives an added dimension. -oxtail roll- this was a bit odd and seemed like it was out of place for a roll. Japanese Bluefin: -O-toro- fattiest tuna belly - Akami- lean bluefin I always love brussel sprouts made right and cannot go wrong with toro. A few requested surprise mocktails were made one with a mint, another with a Japanese plum and another with a passionfruit syrup. Along with some sake. This rating is more 3.5 stars. The restaurant is clean and modern but it is smaller than the Chandler location. There's plenty of parking which is always a plus. My girls and I were supposed to come here for Omakase for their birthdays but unfortunately, I didn't know we were supposed to let them know in advance so that was a bummer. We ended up ordering a bunch of different appetizers, sashimi, nigiri, and rolls. I thought it was okay. The presentation is beautiful but the taste wasn't special. If anything, it was a bit bland. We have eaten at Shimogamo in Chandler for years and are so happy we have Gilbert as an option too. The fish quality is some of the best I've had outside of Japan. Every piece is pristine and fresh- I love that they rotate the menu. Whether you're ordering omakase or going à la carte, you're in good hands. I've been wanting to try this place for so long. The inside was nice, it's a bit small but would like to sit in the outdoor bar area sometime. We got the fried brussel sprouts to start which were yummy. Then we split the yuzu tuna roll, spicy tuna roll, and the Negi Hama roll. This place has been on my list for a while, so I finally gave it a shot. From the outside, it looks like a big restaurant, but inside it's actually pretty cozy, mostly bar seating with just a few tables. The vibe is simple and gives off that traditional Japanese feel. I tried two hand rolls and the assorted sushi entrée. Between the two, I liked the hand rolls more. They kind of look like mini tacos, fun to eat (even if a little messy), and packed with flavor. If you're into bold flavors and lots of toppings, go for the hand rolls. The assorted sushi was more basic. The entree was simple, clean, and nicely presented. It was decent, but nothing that really stood out. Honestly, for the price, I've had better sushi elsewhere with better seafood and better deals. Overall, if you're in the San Tan Mall area and craving sushi, it's worth trying at least once. Would I go back? Probably not but I'm glad I got to check it off my list. read more

I frequented the Chandler location for many years and decided to try the Gilbert. Gilbert has a totally different vibe, bougie-r. The chef was great, food great but overall I missed the cozy vibes of Chandler. I also missed the gyoza, and other items this location changed. The cocktails were good, the matcha martini was flavorful. Don't get me wrong I loved the food, different vibe, but it's not Chandler Shimogamo with the cozy vibes, and traditional menu items. I wanted to try the steak items but they were very over priced in comparison to other local restaurants. I will say the carbonara was good but missing the fish element. Overall service was great, chef great, but I have given 4 stars because I'm a Chandler fan for life. read more

It was a typical high end restaurant . It was packed in a Friday night when we went.. service was acceptable but not anything personable or interactive . We sat in front of the hibachi chef which was fun , but we kept getting ash on our table when he would fan the flames . The presentation of the food was great , the favors were typical . Nothing stood out to me as a wow . The teppanyaki beef was delicious the dipping sauces were tasty . The chicken skewers were ordinary and they said the spice powder had a kick . I was waiting for a big flavor profile but it was disappointing . I actually used the sauce from the teriyaki. The sushi was different they leave their cucumber skins on which gives a different crunch. The fish was soft and fresh tasting, but again not out of the ordinary for the price. So I really liked this place while I was there but not the aftermath. I went there on a Sunday night so it wasn't super busy. We ordered a couple of different menu options varying in price, from basic rolls, spicy tuna rolls, other sushi options as well as expensive wagyu which was a nice choice for sure as far as taste and meat tenderness. You can tell they put a lot of thought into what they serve, service and presentation. It is such a cute place, tastefully decorated. I would say perfect for a date night or small groups of friends/ family get together. Now onto the aftermath... well the meal did not seat well with me and I was pretty sick for 1 and 1/2 day unfortunately. Maybe I got unlucky but one thing is for sure I will stay away from anything raw for the time being. It was such a lovely experience because some of the dishes I wouldn't never have ordered if I didn't do the omakase. My favorite was the wagyu, it basically melted in your mouth. I've been eyeballing this place for a while since they've open. I'm always looking for authentic and creative spots. First I was greeted with a warm and inviting welcome. They allowed me to sit in front of the chef of my choice. Luckily I found myself in front of a great chef by name of Chae. As I was enjoying my meal, I noticed the music was at a perfect volume. Loud enough to eliminate silences and easy to talk over without changing your tone of voice. Decor was pretty and elegant. The plates were perfect for each dish. Sushi was fresh. I got the assorted combo nigiri with soup and salad. You're lucky if you get the albacore with the ginger and onion sauce. Miso was perfectly balanced. Salad was tasty. I would suggest not to add soup and salad if you are a light eater. I had to take my salad with me when I get hungry again. Highly recommend it for lunch if you got some time to enjoy a meal. Stopped in at it was pretty dead. Place was very clean and modern, Host was very friendly and welcoming. I started with he Assorted Sashimi. Wow. Best I ever had. It was yellowtail, salmon and tuna. I liked it so much I got another. This time around they gave me the same yellowtail, salmon and escolar. The escolar came with jalapeños marinaded in ponzu sauce. Very fatty and full of deliciousness. I was still in the mood so I switched to rolls. I got the Citrus and Double Salmon. Both were very good. Ok where do I start? First of all, we've been long time Chandler Shimogamo patrons since 2004 when we moved to Phx and we think they are one of the best sushi restaurants in Phx. Now tonight we tried to celebrate my wife's belated Bday by having what we were hoping would be our third great dinner at their Gilbert location. I had made a reservation for us at the sushi bar counter as the last time we were there we sat by the Yakitori station, which is on the side of the sushi bar. When I asked to sit in front of the sushi chefs per my reservation the hostess ended up saying we couldn't be moved. Kind of a bummer but my wife calmed me down. Ok now onto the food. We were starving and looked forward to what we thought would be a great dinner. Wrong! We ordered some of our usual nigiri sushi (O Toro, hamachi, saba, uni, unagi, and ika). Everything was good besides the unagi as it was cold, and rubbery due to not being fully cooked. Unagi is flakey when done right. Half way thru the meal my wife had to ask about the ika and the waiter said he forgot to tell us they were out. No biggy but it just added to our dismay of the whole meal. We also ordered yakitori chicken wings, pork belly and eggplant on skewers. They were all very salty so I ordered a side of rice. The wings and pork belly were burnt also! We ended up returning the wings as my wife couldn't eat them. We were going to return the pork belly too but I was so hungry I ate most of it. We were so disappointed for the first time in 18 years of dining at Shimogamo. Sorry to say but no more Gilbert Shimo for us. I think the place is all show and no go. I don't know as I hate to write these things but when you're paying a premium price the quality better be on par. Tonight it wasn't. So first off the service was excellent. Very attentive servers and very kind. The rolls were ok.. I could've gotten the same quality roll at a much cheaper establishment honestly. We had two skewer plates and they were just so bad. The chicken meatballs were so salty. The heart/gizzard were so tough. We were so disappointed. The uni oxtail toast was pretty good, but $20 for one bite is kind of hard to swallow. It isn't really a toast size, it's more of a large crouton size. The best thing was the sizzling steak, the udon carbonara had a good flavor. For the $400 price we paid, we left hungry and had to eat somewhere else after. read more

Delicious fresh fish with great variety! The appetizers and rolls have great flavor and texture combinations. Great service and an elevated ambiance. This restaurant is on the pricier side, but for the quality it is worth it, especially the premium assorted nigiri, which has fish flown in from Japan that is harder to find in other sushi restaurants in Arizona and probably the US. I had lunch with a friend here a few days ago and I have mixed feelings. The food was just great and there was a lot of it. I recommend the lunch special with one entree and one type of sushi. It was delicious. It also came with soup and rice. Lots of food!! The service was fine until we finished and then for whatever reason, the server decided to process all of our plates at the table while we were still conversing. He stood there and didn't just clear, he stacked and took the trouble to try to get every little plate and dish in one trip. This took awhile and it really interrupted our lunch conversation. I cannot figure out why it was so important to do kitchen clean-up work at our table. The restaurant was not busy and there was no one waiting for the table. Maybe the server was so focused on his job that it didn't occur to him how much he was annoying us and ruining our lunch. To the manager: please instruct your servers to do nothing more than clear. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Shimogamo as we were craving good sushi. We were afraid it was going to be crowded so we booked ahead of time but surprisingly, the location was pretty empty. It's located in a little plaza, with plenty of parking. I assume this place is a lot more popular in the evening as they only seem to offer the wagyu options at that time (which made me extremely sad!!!! --as we live pretty far from Gilbert and I was really curious about their wagyu sampler. Maybe next time!). The inside is really pretty and does give you an authentic Japan-like experience. The staff's great, attentive and really loved how knowledgeable they were about the dishes. What we got: -Udon carbonara: I acutally enjoyed this but it does get quite heavy due to its overall creaminess. I wish there was something pickled to help cut it down so I would suggest you order this if you plan to share. -Kashiwa (chicken thigh) skewers: I wasn't too big of this appetizer as I found it to be a bit more gamey than what I'm used to. I've had these in Japan and have been to plenty of izakayas. I think if it had that charcoal smokiness to it, I would have liked it a bit more. It paired well with the togarashi but the other powder dip didn't pair well with it. My experience with the sushi here were AMAZING. I'd solely come here for the sushi because although we're in desert Arizona, the freshness of the fish was still great and love how the rice was seasoned well on the citrus roll! The zen roll was okay but kept finding myself going back to the citrus roll over and over again. I'm VERY curious about all their other rolls so if we're in the area again, we might come back just for sushi and (hopefully) wagyu :) -Saikyo Miso Pudding: The miso was very subtle in taste but I still enjoyed the custard, nonetheless. So I'm torn a little with this restaurant, the food is fantastic, I mean it could be the best tasting Japanese Restaurant in Gilbert, it's that good. The staff could also be the rudest in Gilbert, sprinkle in the fact that it's also a higher-end establishment with lovely ambiance and what are you left with? 3 stars. So if you can put up with terrible service in exchange for delightfully great tasting offerings then this place will serve you well. We started with Shishito peppers, definitely the best I've had locally. Then the A5 wagyu fillet which was cooked to perfection, some places will undercook the wagyu in my opinion which can leave it a little chewy due to the high fat content but they prepared it perfectly, it just melted away! Next was Hamachi sashimi which was amazing and an assortment of sushi which finished the meal off well. As good as the food was I'll likely give them another shot in the future but I can say, after dining at over 300 restaurants in metro Phoenix I've only been treated worse by 2 other establishments. Each time we came here, we've only had yakitori skewers, sushi, and sashimi. The other food in the menu like the cold or hot dishes will be for another time. The last time we were here, we ordered O-toro sashimi (one of the specials when we went), Kashiwa skewers, Wagyu BBQ Flight, Hamachi Lime Roll, Aburi Salmon Roll, Surf N Turf Roll, and this Maiko 75 along with the Kamogawa Breeze for drinks. The O-toro sashimi was delicious to us and would order it again. The Kashiwa skewers were good and the two spices that came with it complemented. The Wagyu BBQ Flight came on this hot cube and presentation-wise looked good and the wagyu was delicious with the Ginger Garlic Soy and Japanese BBQ sauces. The Hamachi Lime Roll was okay to me, the Aburi Salmon Roll was good, and same with the Surf N Turf Roll. The Maiko 74 and the Kamogawa Breeze were both tasty and I would order them again.
