I had sky-high expectations for this place... and they absolutely crushed them! My wife and I were hit with a massive sushi craving, so we decided to check out Shimogamo's Chandler location. We'd already fallen in love with their Gilbert spot on a previous date night, but this time around? We had a baby in tow. Needless to say, we weren't entirely sure what to expect. Turns out, we had nothing to worry about. We were seated quickly and greeted so warmly. Even though the only available seating was at the sushi bar, the hostess didn't blink an eye--she immediately offered a high chair, and it fit perfectly right next to us (zero complaints from me!). Our waiter was incredibly friendly, walked us through the menu beautifully, and clued us in on the big differentiator for this location: their grill. Naturally, we had to test it out. We ordered the A5 Wagyu skewers, and oh my god, they literally melted in our mouths. As for the sushi, it came out fast, and the cuts were incredibly generous. The absolute star of the show was the toro--pure, buttery bliss that dissolved instantly. We also grabbed a sashimi sampler and a few other pieces; everything was flawlessly fresh. Even the side salad was on point and--bless them--not totally drenched in dressing. The only minor skip for me was the oysters, which weren't quite my favorite, but everything else easily made up for it. Came here with my coworkers and we all love our dishes from the lunch menu! Tip: the lunch menu has some of the same items in the dinner menu but for a cheaper price! I got the Udon Carbonara $15! This dish was delicious. The udon itself was AL Dente, chewy and soft at the same time. I honestly can just slurp the udon because of how good the texture is. The sauce was so creamy. And the bacon was a nice add to the dish. It was not greasy and the bacon flavor shines throughout the dish with the sauce and udon. Today's special was Truffle chicken meatball. It was so good! Comes with yuzu salt and spicy salt on the side. It has all the flavors combined: light sweetness from the sauce, savory from chicken, citrus from lemon, spicy and yuzu flavor from the Japanese salts. And I love that they brought lunch service back to this location! Friday, Saturday, Sunday only and still make a reservation! It was busy! I wanted something fun to drink but non-alcoholic, so the bartender stopped by to help me decide. I got the Miso Sour and it was so good! This had a nice balance of flavors. I started with the Hamachi Crudo which has grapefruit ponzu, lemon mayo, Serrano pepper, and thin cucumber slices. This was so good! Refreshing with just the right amount of spice. Next I enjoyed chopped salad and miso. The salad was very fresh and had a variety of goodies including edamame, purple cabbage, and avocado. The miso is so good!! It was delicate and yet so flavorful. I chose the Yuzu tuna roll option which has spicy tuna and avocado inside, with big eye tuna on top, garnished with micro cilantro, red onion, and yuzu. Such great food all around. We celebrated a friend's birthday and made the drive for Shimogamo, totally worth it. Everything was phenomenal, and the fish tasted incredibly fresh. The udon carbonara was the favorite of the night for our whole group. It was rich but not too heavy, and splitting it as an appetizer was perfect. The salmon katsu was unique, and the sauce on top really made the dish. It's a fun, elevated take on tartar sauce. For my main, I ordered the spare ribs and would 100% recommend them. The portion was surprisingly large and packed with flavor. I added a side of rice, which complemented the sticky sauce perfectly. Portions here may be on the smaller side, but every bite is amazing. This is hands-down the best sushi restaurant in the Mesa/Chandler/Gilbert/Tempe area. The fish is always incredibly fresh, the rolls are beautifully made, and the service is consistently top-notch. A few months back, my husband and I ordered takeout and it wasn't quite up to their usual standard--the rolls weren't assembled as neatly, and the fish was almost warm. I reached out, and the bar manager, Tommy, immediately invited us in for a redo. He took amazing care of us and made sure everything was perfect. The difference was night and day, and it really showed how committed they are to quality and customer satisfaction. We're heading back in today to celebrate my birthday, and we honestly couldn't be more excited. Have been eyeing this spot for a while and it was an experience for sure! As soon as I walked in, I noticed the modern ambiance. The lighting and decor really bring together the classy dining experience. We were immediately asked if we had reservations (we didn't) but luckily we came right at opening and the hostess and waiter were very prompt in seating us. We ordered one order each of salmon and tuna nigiri (~$11-13 per two pieces). We also were interested in the curry udon, however were notified that the pork belly could not be subbed for chicken. Instead, we opted for the cucumber and eel and zen roll (~$20 for each 8 piece roll). The rolls were decent but not sure if the taste can justify the price; however still tasty (and I'm speaking as a broke student still, haha). The nigiri, however, was some of the best I've had in Arizona! The tuna and salmon meat was perfectly fatty and soft. It melted in my mouth. Not sure if it's worth the price, but man it was scrumptious and had me contemplating if I wanted to order more! Also ordered the Kamogawa Breeze, which was the perfect balance of sweetness from the peach sparkling sake. I would like to come back for the Harvest in Uji, which almost resembles a matcha espresso martini! Finally got to try the famous Shimogamo. I know they are pricey, yet thankfully they were on 2025 Arizona restaurant week, so came here for it. It's cute and cozy, and food was yummy. Yellowtail carpaccio was good, and the other appetizer- it came with caviar, was yummy. Their wagyu melt in my mouth and I really loved sushi. It came seasoned, so didn't need to use soy sauce. Their service was ok- nothing exceptional. I think this place is definitely better than other sushi spots here in terms of quality, but I definitely feel they are pricey in terms of their quality if it was regular price. My first time at the Chandler location and I had a great time! It seems more traditional than the Gilbert location and my friend and I sat at the bar. I can't recall the names of our 2 servers to helped us, but I do remember they were from Michigan. We got a bottle of the house sake and I got the udon carbonara. My friend got the citrus roll and we ended up splitting the yuzu tuna roll. That roll was absolutely delicious. The yuzu and the spiciness from the serrano chili and spicy tuna was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend that roll! I wasn't a fan of the udon carbonara. It tasted like the noodles were overcooked which was a bummer because I've had it before at the Gilbert location and it was really good. I'm writing this review more as feedback for the owner because I'd hate to see a restaurant with so much potential decline in quality and service. My boyfriend and I came to Shimogamo for Mother's Day and ordered the five-course meal. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing compared to our previous visit. The biggest issue was the service. Our waitress, an older woman, came across as dismissive and unnecessarily rude throughout the evening. When we were seated, she offered complimentary rosé. I accepted a glass, but my boyfriend does not drink alcohol, so he politely asked if he could order a mocktail instead. Before he could even finish, she abruptly responded, "No, you can wait to place an order for that," as if he was trying to substitute the complimentary drink, which he was not. He was simply trying to order a beverage. Later, when the braised beef course was served, my boyfriend politely asked if he could have a spoon or fork. The waitress loudly repeated "A SPOON?" in a mocking tone in front of nearby guests, which made the interaction uncomfortable and embarrassing. As for the food, the five-course menu was average at best and far below what we expected from Shimogamo. The salmon tartare and sushi course were both excellent and showed the quality we remembered from our first visit. However, the remaining courses fell flat. The fried branzino was dry and seemed poorly prepared, despite the promising flavors of capers and cream sauce. The braised short rib felt completely out of place on the menu and lacked refinement it was dry, heavy, and more reminiscent of a chain steakhouse meal than an upscale dining experience. The entire dinner also felt rushed, with little attention to pacing or hospitality. What makes this especially disappointing is that we dined here back in November on a double date and had an incredible experience. We spent over $600 that evening, and the service and food were exceptional. Our waitress at that time was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. She guided us through recommendations, and every dish impressed us. That's why this visit was so surprising. Shimogamo clearly has the ability to provide an outstanding dining experience, which makes the decline in both service and execution even more concerning. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously because this restaurant was once one of our favorites. read more

Excellent and fresh flavors. Textures on point. The Wagyu steak was rich and tender, and the udon carbonara was a delicious and rich treat. Service started off a little rocky, I had booked 2 spots at the sushi counter but was told it's not yet ready at the time of our reservation. However, we were offered two spots at the bar area, which is full service. So we decided to try that, at first the server was a little bit overwhelmed and busy. It took a few moments to get things going smoothly, but once he did, everything was fine. The Chandler location is small. It's located in a strip mall. It's nondescript on the outside and the inside is simple design, Japanese appearing. Overall, it was a really enjoyable dinner. I loved everything that I ate. Had a great time. This place feels very elegant, and surprisingly has a bigger space than what I assumed from the outside. The staff were very friendly and provided explanations/descriptions of the drinks, some plates and the overall way the restaurant runs. It seems they change the menu often, shifting things around adding items and taking some out. The sushi felt very fresh and was delicious. My favorite item though was the carbonara udon, which was very creamy and excellent. My scallops were a bit too fishy for my liking, which is unusual for me as I love scallops typically. Everything from fish to ice is shipped in from Japan. The sushi comes from the finest cuts of fish and is flavorful beyond explanation. Courses 1 through 3 were excellent -- everything was very flavorful and enjoyable, and we were genuinely happy while eating those courses. However, we were also served a Wagyu steak that was not listed on the course menu. Unfortunately, it had far too much fat, to the point where it tasted greasy and unpleasant, which was disappointing. First the hospitality and vibe are conducive to a great meal. Our chef Francisco stepped up with enthusiasm and knowledge and served up amazing fish. We were recommended a sake based upon our preferences which was fantastic. I overheard a server answering diner questions with a deep knowledge of the menu. I am impressed. They make it look easy and I know it is not. There are some innovative dishes that were new to us such as braised oxtail and uni on brioche and the superstar king crab with truffle oil on a crispy rice cake. Insanely impressed by shimogamo to the point of I actually stopped enjoying the cheap and low quality sushi restaurants sprinkled around the east valley. I cant even enjoy most sushi restaurants anymore after eating here. My buddy and I came in on a Sunday evening expecting to have the full experience. As soon as we walked in I could tell that this place meant business. The restaurant is clean and well maintained with a great ambiance. It's quiet and you can tell the chefs are professionals who treat food as an art form. Our server who called herself aunty grace was friendly and charismatic and offered many great suggestions that we had to try. We ended up having about 15 courses in total as we wanted to try everything she recommended. Each course was perfectly plated and unique. The food came out fast and our server was constantly coming back to check in with us and kept our drinks refilled. Expect to spend money here if you want to try everything on the menu. The dishes are small and pricey but the quality commands a premium price tag. We spent around $550 between the two of us but it was very worth it. Reservations are highly recommended as tables do tend to fill up pretty fast. Wifey and I pulled up with dinner reservations for 8:30pm and were seated right away upon arrival. Inside, they have a dimly lit interior with about 6-8 tables and bar seating. For their menu, they have a wide range of items including: specialty items, small bites, nigiri, sashimi, signature rolls, and classic rolls. We opted for a spread consisting of the Citrus Rolls, Surf N' Turf Rolls, Chirashi Bowl, Crispy Truffle Crab, Uni Oxtail Toast, Chateaubriand Wagyu, and the Snow Crab Tempura. Everything that we had was beautifully presented and tasted outstanding! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. All of the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The tuna and the yellowtail were much better. My friend got one of the soups with spicy beef miso and udon. She said it wasn't that good, a bit bland. The also ordered an app of the tempura fried chicken breast. I was skeptical that it was not going to be great but it turned out very moist and fresh. I would definitely order that again. One major disappointment was that we ordered the hamachi chile lime crudo that we were looking forward to very much, but it never came. I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH. Our waitress was so nice and she asked the bartender to make my drink a little sweet (i ordered the matcha cocktail) and it was PERFECT. Everything we ate was amazing. My husband and I were in a trance the whole dinner and we didn't want to leave because the food was SO GOOD. We wanted to eat so much more but we were so full. The miso cod was out of this world and so were the scallops! I'm coming back here again and again. 10/10 read more
