Our waiter knew both the menu and specials inside and out, was passionate, and gave excellent recommendations. (I wish we could remember his name!) We enjoyed every single thing ordered - and are already looking forward to the next trip to try more - especially with fall specials upcoming!! Updated review-- still 5 stars for me :) Tonight we went to dinner hosted by the Tasting Collective (a dining club I joined last year). The menu was 5 courses prix fixe designed by the head chef for this group. The restaurant was closed as a private event. Service was excellent, the food was also so delicious, and cocktails were great too. Shimogamo is one of the few Japanese restaurants in the valley that remind me of eating Japanese food in Japan. It's well prepared, fresh, and high quality. The cocktails are creative and nods to Japan with delicate flavors and unique ingredients. Our courses were: started with the truffle amberjack which is a flavor bomb, very rich and truffle forward. Which I don't always enjoy but when paired with amberjack, it was great. 2nd course was a nigiri plate- 4 choices: sea bream (which I love), a fancy type salmon, toro, and couple pieces of the wagyu roll. Next onto a darn near perfect crab croquet that was creamy with big pieces of crab and perfectly fried, and main course was K4 ranch Wagyu from Prescott. Very buttery and delicious. We ended with a matcha basque cheesecake. The chefs talked about the food, answered questions, and talked about their background. I had sky-high expectations for this place... and they absolutely crushed them! My wife and I were hit with a massive sushi craving, so we decided to check out Shimogamo's Chandler location. We'd already fallen in love with their Gilbert spot on a previous date night, but this time around? We had a baby in tow. Needless to say, we weren't entirely sure what to expect. Turns out, we had nothing to worry about. We were seated quickly and greeted so warmly. Even though the only available seating was at the sushi bar, the hostess didn't blink an eye--she immediately offered a high chair, and it fit perfectly right next to us (zero complaints from me!). Our waiter was incredibly friendly, walked us through the menu beautifully, and clued us in on the big differentiator for this location: their grill. Naturally, we had to test it out. We ordered the A5 Wagyu skewers, and oh my god, they literally melted in our mouths. As for the sushi, it came out fast, and the cuts were incredibly generous. The absolute star of the show was the toro--pure, buttery bliss that dissolved instantly. We also grabbed a sashimi sampler and a few other pieces; everything was flawlessly fresh. Even the side salad was on point and--bless them--not totally drenched in dressing. The only minor skip for me was the oysters, which weren't quite my favorite, but everything else easily made up for it. Came here with my coworkers and we all love our dishes from the lunch menu! Tip: the lunch menu has some of the same items in the dinner menu but for a cheaper price! I got the Udon Carbonara $15! This dish was delicious. The udon itself was AL Dente, chewy and soft at the same time. I honestly can just slurp the udon because of how good the texture is. The sauce was so creamy. And the bacon was a nice add to the dish. It was not greasy and the bacon flavor shines throughout the dish with the sauce and udon. Today's special was Truffle chicken meatball. It was so good! Comes with yuzu salt and spicy salt on the side. It has all the flavors combined: light sweetness from the sauce, savory from chicken, citrus from lemon, spicy and yuzu flavor from the Japanese salts. And I love that they brought lunch service back to this location! Friday, Saturday, Sunday only and still make a reservation! It was busy! I wanted something fun to drink but non-alcoholic, so the bartender stopped by to help me decide. I got the Miso Sour and it was so good! This had a nice balance of flavors. I started with the Hamachi Crudo which has grapefruit ponzu, lemon mayo, Serrano pepper, and thin cucumber slices. This was so good! Refreshing with just the right amount of spice. Next I enjoyed chopped salad and miso. The salad was very fresh and had a variety of goodies including edamame, purple cabbage, and avocado. The miso is so good!! It was delicate and yet so flavorful. I chose the Yuzu tuna roll option which has spicy tuna and avocado inside, with big eye tuna on top, garnished with micro cilantro, red onion, and yuzu. My boss, who is a big foodie, recommended this place, so I brought one of my coworkers along to try it out. We ended up ordering a lot of sushi, including several of their specialty rolls. Everything was incredibly fresh, which I was thrilled about -- especially since I've had mixed experiences with freshness at some other sushi spots in Phoenix. Such great food all around. We celebrated a friend's birthday and made the drive for Shimogamo, totally worth it. Everything was phenomenal, and the fish tasted incredibly fresh. The udon carbonara was the favorite of the night for our whole group. It was rich but not too heavy, and splitting it as an appetizer was perfect. The salmon katsu was unique, and the sauce on top really made the dish. It's a fun, elevated take on tartar sauce. For my main, I ordered the spare ribs and would 100% recommend them. The portion was surprisingly large and packed with flavor. I added a side of rice, which complemented the sticky sauce perfectly. Portions here may be on the smaller side, but every bite is amazing. Our waitress had a great personality and kept things fun while also being informative about the dishes. I can't wait to dine here again, definitely recommend making a reservation. This is hands-down the best sushi restaurant in the Mesa/Chandler/Gilbert/Tempe area. The fish is always incredibly fresh, the rolls are beautifully made, and the service is consistently top-notch. A few months back, my husband and I ordered takeout and it wasn't quite up to their usual standard--the rolls weren't assembled as neatly, and the fish was almost warm. I reached out, and the bar manager, Tommy, immediately invited us in for a redo. He took amazing care of us and made sure everything was perfect. The difference was night and day, and it really showed how committed they are to quality and customer satisfaction. We're heading back in today to celebrate my birthday, and we honestly couldn't be more excited. When a place not only serves incredible sushi but also stands behind their food and their guests, that's a restaurant worth supporting. Absolutely 10/10. Highly recommend! read more

Have been eyeing this spot for a while and it was an experience for sure! As soon as I walked in, I noticed the modern ambiance. The lighting and decor really bring together the classy dining experience. We were immediately asked if we had reservations (we didn't) but luckily we came right at opening and the hostess and waiter were very prompt in seating us. We ordered one order each of salmon and tuna nigiri (~$11-13 per two pieces). We also were interested in the curry udon, however were notified that the pork belly could not be subbed for chicken. Instead, we opted for the cucumber and eel and zen roll (~$20 for each 8 piece roll). The rolls were decent but not sure if the taste can justify the price; however still tasty (and I'm speaking as a broke student still, haha). The nigiri, however, was some of the best I've had in Arizona! The tuna and salmon meat was perfectly fatty and soft. It melted in my mouth. Not sure if it's worth the price, but man it was scrumptious and had me contemplating if I wanted to order more! Also ordered the Kamogawa Breeze, which was the perfect balance of sweetness from the peach sparkling sake. I would like to come back for the Harvest in Uji, which almost resembles a matcha espresso martini! Finally got to try the famous Shimogamo. I know they are pricey, yet thankfully they were on 2025 Arizona restaurant week, so came here for it. It's cute and cozy, and food was yummy. Yellowtail carpaccio was good, and the other appetizer- it came with caviar, was yummy. Their wagyu melt in my mouth and I really loved sushi. It came seasoned, so didn't need to use soy sauce. Their service was ok- nothing exceptional. I think this place is definitely better than other sushi spots here in terms of quality, but I definitely feel they are pricey in terms of their quality if it was regular price. My first visit to this location and it was such a delight! We had a somewhat late reservation and we were seated in an almost private room which was very much our preference! We ended up being able to put two tables together for our party of four! And great because we definitely ordered enough to fill up them both! My first time at the Chandler location and I had a great time! It seems more traditional than the Gilbert location and my friend and I sat at the bar. I can't recall the names of our 2 servers to helped us, but I do remember they were from Michigan. We got a bottle of the house sake and I got the udon carbonara. My friend got the citrus roll and we ended up splitting the yuzu tuna roll. That roll was absolutely delicious. The yuzu and the spiciness from the serrano chili and spicy tuna was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend that roll! I wasn't a fan of the udon carbonara. It tasted like the noodles were overcooked which was a bummer because I've had it before at the Gilbert location and it was really good. The staff were very friendly and provided explanations/descriptions of the drinks, some plates and the overall way the restaurant runs. My favorite item though was the carbonara udon, which was very creamy and excellent. My scallops were a bit too fishy for my liking, which is unusual for me as I love scallops typically. Overall, this is a great place for a special dinner. It feels a bit out of my price range and nothing particularly wow'd me enough to come frequently. Our friend is a chef & their family were visiting, so we had to choose our dinner reataurant carefully. This has been in our list for awhile & it was worth the wait! The ambiance was modern Japanese decor. You walked into a sushi bar with tables accenting the room along the opposite side. Sorry - we devoured these meu items before we remembered to take pics: * Crispy Nasu Dengaku - batter seemed a bit thicker than tempura batter that gave it a nice texture. Unsure if the koji miso was brushed in the eggplant & hatcho miso incorporated in the sauce (on the side) but they were delicious with or without the sauce * Jumbo Shrimp Tempura - they are not overly battered, so don't be disappointed if it looks smaller * Hirame Usuzuruki - sashimi were beautifully plated on a long bamboo leaf on a bed of crushed ice. I'm writing this review more as feedback for the owner because I'd hate to see a restaurant with so much potential decline in quality and service. My boyfriend and I came to Shimogamo for Mother's Day and ordered the five-course meal. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing compared to our previous visit. The biggest issue was the service. Our waitress, an older woman, came across as dismissive and unnecessarily rude throughout the evening. When we were seated, she offered complimentary rosé. I accepted a glass, but my boyfriend does not drink alcohol, so he politely asked if he could order a mocktail instead. Before he could even finish, she abruptly responded, "No, you can wait to place an order for that," as if he was trying to substitute the complimentary drink, which he was not. He was simply trying to order a beverage. Later, when the braised beef course was served, my boyfriend politely asked if he could have a spoon or fork. The waitress loudly repeated "A SPOON?" in a mocking tone in front of nearby guests, which made the interaction uncomfortable and embarrassing. As for the food, the five-course menu was average at best and far below what we expected from Shimogamo. The salmon tartare and sushi course were both excellent and showed the quality we remembered from our first visit. However, the remaining courses fell flat. The fried branzino was dry and seemed poorly prepared, despite the promising flavors of capers and cream sauce. The braised short rib felt completely out of place on the menu and lacked refinement it was dry, heavy, and more reminiscent of a chain steakhouse meal than an upscale dining experience. The entire dinner also felt rushed, with little attention to pacing or hospitality. What makes this especially disappointing is that we dined here back in November on a double date and had an incredible experience. We spent over $600 that evening, and the service and food were exceptional. Our waitress at that time was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. She guided us through recommendations, and every dish impressed us. That's why this visit was so surprising. Shimogamo clearly has the ability to provide an outstanding dining experience, which makes the decline in both service and execution even more concerning. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously because this restaurant was once one of our favorites. read more

Today was my second time visiting this location. As a sushi lover, Shimogamo is ranked in the top two of best sushi spots in the Metro Phoenix area. Everything from fish to ice is shipped in from Japan. The sushi comes from the finest cuts of fish and is flavorful beyond explanation. A few of my favorites from today's meal were the hamachi chili crudo, premium assorted nigiri, and matcha tiramisu. The customer service is also top tier. If you sit at the bar, request Joe. Though he was new, his phenomenal service was the cherry on top for a beautiful experience. The ambiance is classy while leaning toward a casual feel. We came for the New Year's Eve course menu and overall it was a mixed experience. Courses 1 through 3 were excellent -- everything was very flavorful and enjoyable, and we were genuinely happy while eating those courses. However, we were also served a Wagyu steak that was not listed on the course menu. Unfortunately, it had far too much fat, to the point where it tasted greasy and unpleasant, which was disappointing. Course 4 followed shortly after, and the duck nanban soba was served quite cold. Since we were one of the last tables of the night, we wondered if that might have affected the execution, but for a course menu, the level of detail and care felt a bit lacking toward the end. The dishes came out in a timely manner and each were delicious. My favorites were the toro uni bite and wagyu in particular. I appreciated the creativity in the dishes, though the star of the plates was the protein itself which tasted really fresh each time. Probably the best uni we've had. Reservations are highly recommended as tables do tend to fill up pretty fast. Wifey and I pulled up with dinner reservations for 8:30pm and were seated right away upon arrival. Inside, they have a dimly lit interior with about 6-8 tables and bar seating. For their menu, they have a wide range of items including: specialty items, small bites, nigiri, sashimi, signature rolls, and classic rolls. We opted for a spread consisting of the Citrus Rolls, Surf N' Turf Rolls, Chirashi Bowl, Crispy Truffle Crab, Uni Oxtail Toast, Chateaubriand Wagyu, and the Snow Crab Tempura. Everything that we had was beautifully presented and tasted outstanding! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. All of the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The tuna and the yellowtail were much better. My friend got one of the soups with spicy beef miso and udon. She said it wasn't that good, a bit bland. The also ordered an app of the tempura fried chicken breast. I was skeptical that it was not going to be great but it turned out very moist and fresh. I would definitely order that again. One major disappointment was that we ordered the hamachi chile lime crudo that we were looking forward to very much, but it never came.
