This dish was delicious. The udon itself was AL Dente, chewy and soft at the same time. I honestly can just slurp the udon because of how good the texture is. The sauce was so creamy. And the bacon was a nice add to the dish. It was not greasy and the bacon flavor shines throughout the dish with the sauce and udon. Today's special was Truffle chicken meatball. It was so good! Comes with yuzu salt and spicy salt on the side. It has all the flavors combined: light sweetness from the sauce, savory from chicken, citrus from lemon, spicy and yuzu flavor from the Japanese salts. Very nice assortment of super fresh quality sashimi, over perfect rice. The hit of the meal was the Saikyo miso black cod. We agreed, this was the most scrumptious piece of fish we had ever eaten. And I love that they brought lunch service back to this location! Friday, Saturday, Sunday only and still make a reservation! It was busy! I wanted something fun to drink but non-alcoholic, so the bartender stopped by to help me decide. I got the Miso Sour and it was so good! This had a nice balance of flavors. I started with the Hamachi Crudo which has grapefruit ponzu, lemon mayo, Serrano pepper, and thin cucumber slices. This was so good! Refreshing with just the right amount of spice. Next I enjoyed chopped salad and miso. The salad was very fresh and had a variety of goodies including edamame, purple cabbage, and avocado. The miso is so good!! It was delicate and yet so flavorful. I chose the Yuzu tuna roll option which has spicy tuna and avocado inside, with big eye tuna on top, garnished with micro cilantro, red onion, and yuzu. Such great food all around. We celebrated a friend's birthday and made the drive for Shimogamo, totally worth it. Everything was phenomenal, and the fish tasted incredibly fresh. The udon carbonara was the favorite of the night for our whole group. It was rich but not too heavy, and splitting it as an appetizer was perfect. The salmon katsu was unique, and the sauce on top really made the dish. It's a fun, elevated take on tartar sauce. For my main, I ordered the spare ribs and would 100% recommend them. The portion was surprisingly large and packed with flavor. I added a side of rice, which complemented the sticky sauce perfectly. Portions here may be on the smaller side, but every bite is amazing. I'm writing this review more as feedback for the owner because I'd hate to see a restaurant with so much potential decline in quality and service. My boyfriend and I came to Shimogamo for Mother's Day and ordered the five-course meal. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing compared to our previous visit. The biggest issue was the service. Our waitress, an older woman, came across as dismissive and unnecessarily rude throughout the evening. When we were seated, she offered complimentary rosé. I accepted a glass, but my boyfriend does not drink alcohol, so he politely asked if he could order a mocktail instead. Before he could even finish, she abruptly responded, "No, you can wait to place an order for that," as if he was trying to substitute the complimentary drink, which he was not. He was simply trying to order a beverage. Later, when the braised beef course was served, my boyfriend politely asked if he could have a spoon or fork. The waitress loudly repeated "A SPOON?" in a mocking tone in front of nearby guests, which made the interaction uncomfortable and embarrassing. As for the food, the five-course menu was average at best and far below what we expected from Shimogamo. The salmon tartare and sushi course were both excellent and showed the quality we remembered from our first visit. However, the remaining courses fell flat. The fried branzino was dry and seemed poorly prepared, despite the promising flavors of capers and cream sauce. The braised short rib felt completely out of place on the menu and lacked refinement it was dry, heavy, and more reminiscent of a chain steakhouse meal than an upscale dining experience. The entire dinner also felt rushed, with little attention to pacing or hospitality. What makes this especially disappointing is that we dined here back in November on a double date and had an incredible experience. We spent over $600 that evening, and the service and food were exceptional. Our waitress at that time was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. She guided us through recommendations, and every dish impressed us. That's why this visit was so surprising. Shimogamo clearly has the ability to provide an outstanding dining experience, which makes the decline in both service and execution even more concerning. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously because this restaurant was once one of our favorites. read more

This is hands-down the best sushi restaurant in the Mesa/Chandler/Gilbert/Tempe area. The fish is always incredibly fresh, the rolls are beautifully made, and the service is consistently top-notch. A few months back, my husband and I ordered takeout and it wasn't quite up to their usual standard--the rolls weren't assembled as neatly, and the fish was almost warm. I reached out, and the bar manager, Tommy, immediately invited us in for a redo. He took amazing care of us and made sure everything was perfect. The difference was night and day, and it really showed how committed they are to quality and customer satisfaction. We're heading back in today to celebrate my birthday, and we honestly couldn't be more excited. Have been eyeing this spot for a while and it was an experience for sure! As soon as I walked in, I noticed the modern ambiance. The lighting and decor really bring together the classy dining experience. We were immediately asked if we had reservations (we didn't) but luckily we came right at opening and the hostess and waiter were very prompt in seating us. We ordered one order each of salmon and tuna nigiri (~$11-13 per two pieces). We also were interested in the curry udon, however were notified that the pork belly could not be subbed for chicken. Instead, we opted for the cucumber and eel and zen roll (~$20 for each 8 piece roll). The rolls were decent but not sure if the taste can justify the price; however still tasty (and I'm speaking as a broke student still, haha). The nigiri, however, was some of the best I've had in Arizona! The tuna and salmon meat was perfectly fatty and soft. It melted in my mouth. Not sure if it's worth the price, but man it was scrumptious and had me contemplating if I wanted to order more! Also ordered the Kamogawa Breeze, which was the perfect balance of sweetness from the peach sparkling sake. I would like to come back for the Harvest in Uji, which almost resembles a matcha espresso martini! Finally got to try the famous Shimogamo. I know they are pricey, yet thankfully they were on 2025 Arizona restaurant week, so came here for it. It's cute and cozy, and food was yummy. Yellowtail carpaccio was good, and the other appetizer- it came with caviar, was yummy. Their wagyu melt in my mouth and I really loved sushi. It came seasoned, so didn't need to use soy sauce. Their service was ok- nothing exceptional. I think this place is definitely better than other sushi spots here in terms of quality, but I definitely feel they are pricey in terms of their quality if it was regular price. My first time at the Chandler location and I had a great time! It seems more traditional than the Gilbert location and my friend and I sat at the bar. I can't recall the names of our 2 servers to helped us, but I do remember they were from Michigan. We got a bottle of the house sake and I got the udon carbonara. My friend got the citrus roll and we ended up splitting the yuzu tuna roll. That roll was absolutely delicious. The yuzu and the spiciness from the serrano chili and spicy tuna was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend that roll! I wasn't a fan of the udon carbonara. It tasted like the noodles were overcooked which was a bummer because I've had it before at the Gilbert location and it was really good. Wow, what a great hidden gem!! This restaurant is tucked away in a strip mall next to a big Korean hot pot restaurant. It's quaint, adorable and super charming. We came in to try the AZ restaurant week menu but we decided we didn't want 2 desserts so one of us ordered off that menu and other was a la cart. The fish on the nigiri course was sooooo good. Excellent and fresh flavors. Textures on point. The Wagyu steak was rich and tender, and the udon carbonara was a delicious and rich treat. Service started off a little rocky, I had booked 2 spots at the sushi counter but was told it's not yet ready at the time of our reservation. However, we were offered two spots at the bar area, which is full service. So we decided to try that, at first the server was a little bit overwhelmed and busy. It took a few moments to get things going smoothly, but once he did, everything was fine. The Chandler location is small. It's located in a strip mall. It's nondescript on the outside and the inside is simple design, Japanese appearing. Overall, it was a really enjoyable dinner. I loved everything that I ate. Had a great time. This place feels very elegant, and surprisingly has a bigger space than what I assumed from the outside. The staff were very friendly and provided explanations/descriptions of the drinks, some plates and the overall way the restaurant runs. It seems they change the menu often, shifting things around adding items and taking some out. The sushi felt very fresh and was delicious. My favorite item though was the carbonara udon, which was very creamy and excellent. My scallops were a bit too fishy for my liking, which is unusual for me as I love scallops typically. Overall, this is a great place for a special dinner. It feels a bit out of my price range and nothing particularly wow'd me enough to come frequently. We came for the New Year's Eve course menu and overall it was a mixed experience. Courses 1 through 3 were excellent -- everything was very flavorful and enjoyable, and we were genuinely happy while eating those courses. However, we were also served a Wagyu steak that was not listed on the course menu. Unfortunately, it had far too much fat, to the point where it tasted greasy and unpleasant, which was disappointing. Everything from fish to ice is shipped in from Japan. The sushi comes from the finest cuts of fish and is flavorful beyond explanation. We ordered the pork belly skewers that were so delicious melt in your mouth. 3 sushi rolls that were pretty good. I wouldn't recommend the land and sea, wasn't worth the price. The tuna and the yellowtail were much better. My friend got one of the soups with spicy beef miso and udon. She said it wasn't that good, a bit bland. The also ordered an app of the tempura fried chicken breast. I was skeptical that it was not going to be great but it turned out very moist and fresh. I would definitely order that again. One major disappointment was that we ordered the hamachi chile lime crudo that we were looking forward to very much, but it never came. My experience yesterday evening at Shimogamo was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. I placed a pickup order at 6:40 PM and intentionally selected a 7:45 PM curbside pickup (white Lexus SUV), rather than the ASAP option. We arrived about 10 minutes early and clicked the pickup link as instructed in the text message. We waited in the car until 7:50 PM to allow for any delays. After waiting, my fiancé went inside to check on the order and was told it would be another 10 minutes. A few minutes later, the host informed him there was a name mix-up and that someone under "Tina" or "Christina" had picked up our order by mistake. I think it was all fabricated. Because one minute they said it'd be another 10 minutes, the next, they said they accidentally gave our order away without confirming with the other customer that it was the correct order. At this point, we had waited over 30 minutes past our scheduled pickup time and more than two hours after placing the order. I came inside (still in pajamas and slippers, hence why curbside pickup) to understand what was going on. Staff acknowledged the mistake but did not apologize and simply said they were remaking the order. No one proactively spoke with us to resolve the situation. I had to flag down the host, who appeared to avoid us. When I asked to speak with a manager, she asked if I wanted to, rather than offering one. She went to speak with the manager, but no manager ever came to speak with us. There was still no apology. To make matters worse, a server mocked the situation and said "crisis averted," which felt dismissive and unprofessional. When the order was finally brought out, neither the manager nor the host came to us.. instead, a lead bartender delivered it. Even then, there was still no apology. All he said was, "Mistakes happen. We added a cheesecake and will comp the bill." We were left to "wait and see" whether this will actually be done. The lack of accountability, basic courtesy, and professionalism throughout this entire experience was shocking. Mistakes happen, but the way this was handled, with no apology, no manager interaction, dismissive comments, and immature behavior is unacceptable. We won't be back and encourage everyone to steer clear from this location. read more

Reservations are highly recommended as tables do tend to fill up pretty fast. Wifey and I pulled up with dinner reservations for 8:30pm and were seated right away upon arrival. Inside, they have a dimly lit interior with about 6-8 tables and bar seating. For their menu, they have a wide range of items including: specialty items, small bites, nigiri, sashimi, signature rolls, and classic rolls. We opted for a spread consisting of the Citrus Rolls, Surf N' Turf Rolls, Chirashi Bowl, Crispy Truffle Crab, Uni Oxtail Toast, Chateaubriand Wagyu, and the Snow Crab Tempura. Everything that we had was beautifully presented and tasted outstanding! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. All of the staff are very friendly and welcoming. His ineptitude made even ordering a drink a chore. And arrive early. If you arrive after 7 pm on a weeknight, don't be surprised if they demand that you order before 8:30 and start cleaning up for the night and tearing down the restaurant for closure as you dine. The food was amazing. I wasn't a big fan of raw fish, but their sushi was amazing, the raw fish has a clean taste to it. And the perfect amount of sushi rice. The uni ( sea urchin ) was my favorite. It has this sweet buttery taste that melts in your mouth. We also had the mushroom with yuzu and the kobe beef that goes so well with the yuzu mule. The staff was so attentive and a special shout out to our server. I didn't get her name but she is very knowledgeable with the menu and made sure that the customers are well taking care of. The location was very cozy. Low ceiling that reminds me of japan. Its was clean and the table are arranged very nicely that you don't have to worry about bumping in to the other customers. I will definitely be coming back from the carbonara udon, eggplant, and shaved ice. The udon was so flavorful and unique- I've never had anything quite like it. It was surprisingly light. The eggplant had a very strong miso flavor and perfectly crisp on the outside. They mentioned that they use the same ice used for their cocktails for their shaved ice so it was perfectly fluffy/flaky and flavorless ice. We came here for a special occasion and to also get a Japanese experience. Like mentioned a couple times, I'm not a seafood person so I can't say much about the sushi but the food from the kitchen was amazing. I started off with the carbonara noodles and I kid you not they were the most delicious noodles I've ever had. The sauce was so creamy and flavorful and it tasted so amazing. The noodles were cooked to perfection and the bacon in the noodles was delicious, it wasn't too hard or too soft it was perfect. The pork ribs were also very tasty, the meat on them was so tender and it came off the bone so easily. They also had so much flavor, I also added some of the green onion and mayo on top which also made it good. We ended off the night with a matcha tiramisu, it was a sponge cake with red bean paste, then a cheesecake base with matcha powder on top. I thought the red bean paste would make it taste weird but it wasn't bad at all. The prices are also on the higher side but you also have to keep in mind you're getting good quality meals. I also tried their lemonade which is made there and it was amazing, I don't think I've tried a lemonade that tastes like that. Our experience there was probably one of the best. We had a lovely waitress named Micah. I loved everything about her, she made us feel so comfortable and explained to us about the different kind of dishes and sushi. She went into detail about the different fishes and the way the sushi is made, like the traditional way and other ways as well. She gave us very good recommendations, we loved everything she recommended us. The restaurant itself is pretty small. There's seating options at the 'bar,' it's more of a counter space and there's also more seating options in the back. We were seated by the entrance which has like 3 tables with 2 chairs in each table. It's more of a darker atmosphere inside but very relaxing and somewhat fancy.
