I had asked around for colorist recs on IG, and a close friend of mine recommended Shine On Heights. ***Not to be confused with Shine In Heights down the street, although this is their second sister location. *** She was updating me on her balayage service from Selena. The outcome was gorgeous. Selena wasn't available, but Jessica was. When my friend and I met up for brunch at Killen's, I couldn't stop staring and admiring her hair. She showed me Jessica's IG, and it had her portfolio of color and cut with previous clients. I knew I made the right choice booking with her. Since we're still in the midst of a pandemic (weird to say but now the norm), you had to call to say you were here and wait outside before coming up to the second floor. I was 10 mins early, so I sat at the picnic tables outside till it was time. They checked my temp and had hand sanitizer available. Everyone wore masks. I waited maybe 5 more mins in their seating area. I didn't mind because I know how color services can go over time if it's done right. Jessica greeted me, asked if I wanted a beverage, and did a quick consultation before getting started. I showed her some hair color ideas on Pinterest and other silver/blonde hair I had in the past. She took the time to listen to what I wanted. I wanted to keep my length, and she respected that. I love her method of balayage and use of multiple toners to add dimension. It looks so natural and blends well. I received so many compliments. She took her time and was so personable and easy to talk to. She gave great advice on hair tips. I have found my new stylist! The stations are spacious, and the chairs at the washing station are comfortable. They don't leave you feeling like you got whiplash. Lol. They use Goldwell and Kevin Murphy products that smell divine. All the stylists are talented and trained to do color and cut. Bonus points!! This was the hairapy I needed before my birthday. I rarely go get my hair cut, maybe once a year. I'm not tied to any salon and since I knew it was time, I tried someplace new! I found Shine on Instagram and liked the "vibes" and their website was helpful. I also liked how you could see a little about each stylist and what they like to do and their work. I called the day before for just a wash and cut. They fit me in the next day! My stylist was Jude and she was so great! She really listened to what I didn't want haha! I feel like my hair looks bulky and heavy when I get it cut and showed her examples of that look. I also showed her pics of what I did want( a few inches cut off and some layering/face framing). She was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions about what is going on with my dense, unruly hair. She did a wet and dry cut which I've never had done before but I'm so glad I did! I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, literally! My hair feels so light and bouncy! She asked if I wanted to add some wispiness to the ends and I said I would try a little and I feel like that was the game changer to the heavy look of previous hair cuts. I've been wanting a haircut so figured I try this place after some research. I called in to make an appointment and asked for more information about the Hydrating Haircut (on their website: "This includes your Haircut along with a custom mixed Goldwell Repair Treatment that last up to 22 washes.") *important for later. Even though the lady that picked up didn't sound too knowledgeable of services, it didn't bother me too much and I just went ahead and made the appointment. I have some frizziness so was looking forward to get it "treated". They put me down with Cass/Cassandra. When I first entered the salon on November 3rd, I went up to check in and went to use bathroom then came back out to sit in the waiting area. No one bothered to update me the appointment is running a little behind and to wait a little bit more but they did offer drinks. Then Cass finally came over that she'll be with me in a moment after she was done with the last client. So I was seated and we went over what haircut I wanted and I mentioned I wanted to do the Hydrating Haircut. She was up selling the treatment & said it'll be $20 more for the treatment that'll last 22 washes. I was skeptical and hesitant why the information on website and what the staff said is not consistent but I get it, it's part of the business strategy. The haircut itself was underwhelming. She knew I have fine thin hair but when it came to blow drying/styling it, it was just flat and didn't have the wow factor of just getting a new haircut. Fast forward, 3 days of not washing hair/skipping wash days, I noticed my hair was frizzy again. Very odd considering how much she tried to sell the product of lasting 22 washes so I thought the treatment would still be effective. (We even discussed that I'm using Living Proof shampoo and she said that's totally fine). So if figured I give them a call and a man's voice picked up. I discussed my concern of my hair's current condition considering I just got my hair "treated" and he didn't sound very empathetic or helpful. He gave a few responses saying it doesn't fully treat it and it's just a deep conditioner, etc. You'd think he try a little harder to make the customer feel better for paying an extra $20 for deep conditioner. But sure fine I get it, nothing is a 100% solution and then he said he'll let Cass know to give me a call back that day. The real nail in the coffin is that I went about my day & never got a call from Cass. It's already end of November and I still have not heard from Cass or anyone at this establishment. Either he never passed along the message or if he did, Cass never bothered to reach back out to me. This was really what finalized the bad experience for me. Safe to say I won't be coming back here. I really want to love this place because I live so close but I've gotten my hair cut with them twice, two different stylists and it was not what I asked for. The facility is really nice, I love their shampoo station but their stylists are unexperienced. I have asked for the same thing every time. Bang trim, rounded shape in the back and layers everywhere. Both times with 2 different stylists i got the same result. 1. Great job on the bangs 2. NO LAYERS! just a little face framing. I asked the stylist if she was going to do layers everywhere like i asked and she said ill notice the layers she cut when i wash my hair and if i didnt like it I can come back and she can give me more. There aren't any layers! its like they are afraid to cut my hair. and why would I go back for a service they clearly do not know how to do. 3. Rounded shape on back. I booked a haircut a couple days in advanced and was glad to see they had quite a few times available! The salon was conveniently located in the Heights. Jude was my stylist and while this wasn't the worst cut I've ever had by any means, the styling experience was pretty bad. I sat down and told her I wanted to take off length because I have very thick, straight, but VERY fine hair and when it gets too long it tangles easily. I also talked about my texture in general and how a strong breeze can tangle my hair. All in all, I probably used the word "tangle" about five times before she even took me to wash. I showed up with dirty hair, so I wasn't surprised that she double shampooed me because I needed a clarifying treatment! However, the way that she washed my hair did give me pause--she really balled it up in a way that I knew would tangle unless she used a super hydrating conditioner and leave in treatment/hair serum. I was then surprised when the only products she put in were a heat protectant and a mousse! She put the mousse all over my hair (not just roots) before brushing me out, which on fine tangly hair is like glue in knots. What proceeded was a series of yanks and even ripping my hair to get out tangles. Even more surprising, when she went to dry my hair instead of sectioning and round brushing to dry, she left my hair down and dried it by just scrunching near my roots and holding the blow dryer all over my head/down my hair (not using a brush). It was similar to the way my sweet momma would blow dry my hair as a child (bless her, she is not a hair stylist!) The whole experience ended with an apology of "sorry, your hair tangles really easily" and the flattest "blowout" I've ever received. I immediately put it in a bun when I got home and had to curl it before leaving the house. After washing and blow drying it myself over the weekend I would say that the cut is decent! No major complaints, but no "wow" either. Front layers a bit short and don't integrate super well, and it hangs fairly flat. Overall I would say that my stylist didn't seem to know how to change her technique to accommodate my hair. I would expect this haircut to cost around $50, not $70. read more

From moment of my entry until my exit I felt like a VIP. I love the Oribe products but what I love even more is at Shine none of the stylists or receptionists pushed product on me which in turn makes me want to buy. I received a full balayage, cut, style, and treatment with Fryda. She was so friendly and welcoming as I sat in her chair and chatted with her regarding my hair. She took the integrity of my hair very seriously and made sure to walk me through the whole process. The end result was a beautiful and vibrant balayage. I went in to see Taylor this Saturday after not having my hair cut since January. It was so nice to be back in the salon! I wasn't sure what to expect given the current situation. I arrived at the salon and called to check-in for my appointment. Upon entering the salon they took my temperature and took me straight back to Taylor's chair. They left every other station empty so there was plenty of space between me and the other clients. And of course, everyone had masks on! I felt totally comfortable. Taylor did a great job on my haircut and helped me chat through some of the issues I've been having with my postpartum hair. I've been going to her for years and she is really amazing. I was looking for a place in Houston to get my hair done so I tried Shine on the Heights. Nice place but seems like most of the stylists and colorists are in training as opposed to seasoned professionals but this may have just been the people that worked on me. I asked for an ash brown but instead of permanent dye the colorist used blonding cream and I was charged for two different glazes which faded within 16 days then they wanted me to come back and pay full price for another dye after I just paid close to $300 and then additional money on products (I do like the products). I am now blonde. I wanted to get back to my natural color because I am pregnant and will not have time to keep up with color with a newborn. I was dark dark brown when I went in. I wanted an ash brown not a blonde. When I left the salon, it was brown but the blonding cream she used lightened it too much and the glaze she put over it did not last more than two weeks. She also was telling the assistants she just learned this technique during some training on that Monday. Well, I don't appreciate being experimented on. My hair is super damaged now. They give you random extra services to add like a hundred dollars to your bill. If you want to see your color you have to pay for a blow dry. I understand the upsell but there is a thin line between sales and scam artists. To me I feel like they try to make it so you have to come back every few weeks for full color and all the add ons. You leave feeling great and I was happy to pay top dollar but the results don't last. As you can see in the photos this looks like a bad highlight job but all the colors were intentional. read more

Selena is one of the best stylists I have ever had. She seriously cares so much about making sure you actually like your cut and its so friendly. I have never been disappointed with a cut from her and I am honestly extremely picky with my hair. I even came late to an appointment once and although she was rushed she still did such a good job which really says something about her work! Not only does she cut your hair, but she will happily show you how to style your new cut and what products to use for your specific hair type. I already had layers from a previous haircut so all she had to do was trim them. After she cut my hair she told me "I don't like layers so I don't do them." I have seen Fryda at Shine salon a total of 5 times now and let me tell you my review is long overdue!! Fryda is an incredible stylist who will make your hair dreams a reality! She is very thorough during consultations, taking into consideration your hair's health and history, your budget, and she makes sure she understands exactly what you want. She is VERY attentive to detail and careful to preserve the integrity of her clients hair. Fryda has transformed my dark brown natural hair into a buttery golden blonde with ZERO damage. I recommend her to anyone looking for a transformation or to simply maintain their look. As for my experience at Shine On Heights Salon, I love coming to this upscale well-decorated location. I'm always reminded of my appointments a day or two in advance with a text message and I appreciate the COVID protocols like the ample hand sanitizer available and temperature checks. The salon is conveniently located in a shopping plaza in the heights with restaurants to get a quick snack for before or after your appointment. I've had great luck with parking all but the last time I visited, which was on a Saturday. Date of appt 9/30/22 @9am Stylist Emily Don't go to her!!! You could tell she was definitely not experienced! This was my worst hair experience ever. Went for a retouch balayage to be blonder and came out with basically brown hair. The bleached areas she did got covered up with dark hair dye and dark toner. My hair looks worse now then when I just had my roots grown out. Doesn't even look like I got my roots done at all. It looks patchy and not well blended. Even after all the teasing she did, which only caused more damage to my hair. When getting brushed out, I would see chunks of my hair falling from her pulling so hard. After I made a surprised face of seeing all the hair that was coming onto the brush she simply said, "oh that comes with being blonde, expect breakage" instead of trying to be more careful and gentle with hair that just got processed. When she applied the toner/roots it was so messily applied that it was getting all over my clothes and my blonde pieces. I was left with a very noticeable dark spot in the front of my head from the drips of toner that was getting everywhere. After washing that out I was hoping it was going to give the results we had talked about, and be similar to the reference pictures we looked at together before starting the process. As soon as she blow dried my hair and I saw one piece completely dry to show the end result, I freaked out! My hair was so much darker than what it was when I walked in there. When she asked if I liked it, I immediately said, "no, this is not the color I wanted it's so dark" I got up from the chair went to the restroom and literally cried. For anyone out there that has blonde hair and is naturally a brunette you can understand how HARD it is to maintain that blonde and how much damage your hair takes to be that light. And just like that someone ruined it so easily by applying a dark color on top. Honestly I don't understand what happened, I don't know if she picked the wrong color or what. But this is not okay. I didn't let her finish blow drying my hair, i just walked to the register with my hair soaked. I payed $300 for my hair to basically get burned, pulled out, and damaged. Worst part is, her excuse was that I asked to be darker. And that's a complete lie! Once I got home, I went on instagram to look up her page again, and found that she blocked me. I started going to Taylor a few years ago when another stylist botched my hair color. She did a wonderful job of fixing my hair and I've gone to her ever since! Taylor is careful to ask a bunch of questions to clarify what exactly you want as far as color and cut. When I've shown her pictures of the balyage examples or hair cuts, she asks specifically what I like about the picture, what that means for my hair, and what her process will be to acheive the look. As is the process for any experienced stylist, she checks with you several times during the hair cut to make sure you like the length, layers, etc. I definitely recommend Taylor and Shine On :) read more
