I went here for the first time today. It was the Yelp reviews that attracted me. I had tried different hairdressers in town, but none that satisfied me. I came here and had my hair done by Cat, and I am so happy that I did, I feel good about my hair again! Having good hair really makes an impact on my day. She gave me a haircut, a color, foils, a glossing, and a style. She's amazing and her prices are reasonable. This salon is quite unique, because it's also a spa. Decided to try out this salon because it was closer to my home and I completely regret it. I got paired up with Maria and i asked how much experience she had and the person i texted with said she had 3 years with the salon but didn't respond to my question of how much experience as a stylist. But I didn't think much of it and went to my appointment. I showed Maria a photo of what I wanted but got something completely different. She was nice and chatty but I left the salon feeling embarrassed about my new cut especially because it was so drastic. I'm so confused about the high ratings. No explanation, no apology, I was just left to wait in obscurity. I'm not sure if there was a miscommunication between the scheduler and the stylist, but my stylist was MIA. Not for every curl, friends. Not. For. Every. Curl.  With my primary stylist moving on to fashion shows, I decided to search for a 3A/3B curly cut nearby. I booked an appointment with Sara with much excitement about the future of my hair. I'll preface this with details about my previous haircut. While in Italy, we fawned over the amazing curls parading up and down the vias. I opted in. My Italy cut was fabulous, and I found a place in downtown ATX where the stylist maintained the three-dimensional layering for 1.5 years. It was such that I could blow dry it straight if desired, flip it over to diffuse the curls for more volume (no thanks, really), but generally I'm just wash and go, fluffing the product out once the hair air dries. Back to my recent cut: I should have done my research. This Deva haircut comes from the Deva haircare line, which historically dries my hair out. I did not realize the extent to which the haircut is... specialized. I had told Sara I wanted to preserve the length, keeping enough hair especially to tie back (I'm a mom now, so of course). The curls are cut dry, with the cut "shaping" to the form of each curl. Once dry at the salon I did not love the look of my hair but did like the shine. I was hoping I just had to use my own products at home in order for it to look right. My curls are now living all of their own individual lives, each curl with its own individual zip code. There is little harmony in how my curls form; in fact, many of them just fray and do weird squiggly, boxy type maneuvers. My hair appears unkempt and haphazard, a look that curly people generally try to avoid. Once it's dry, I cannot touch my hair. Of course you don't fondle and caress curls a ton, but you want to break up the product to disrupt the "wet" look.  It was so bad that, two weeks after the fateful cut, I returned to my old salon, and a new stylist, to try and salvage what I could. She sighed heavily when I told her I'd gotten the Deva cut; she's seen the dark side of it before. "I'll do my best here but... there are some pieces that are just way too short." She's right: at the crown I've got insanely short homeless pieces trying to find a curly friend to hold on to. It is not going well. My hair has exploded in precisely the way one doesn't want: outwardly across instead of up to volume heaven. There is no heaven for this hair right now. And forget about re-wearing: I have to wash it every day to keep some remblance of order here. It looks too much like a basket of frayed rope ends otherwise. So my formerly-cooperative curls now require a good 2-3 month grow out period before I can have it looked at again. Some mornings I think "it can't be that bad" but once it dries up there is so much WTFing that happens. A great deal. And again, there are rave reviews here so it could just be my curl pattern, structure, density, whatever.  But I'll tell you this: no combination of hair product from my extensive catalog has been able to make heads or tails of what happened to my curls. Be warned. read more

I unfortunately have to update my review. I don't understand what happened. After going here a few times within the past few years to the same person, often confidently leaving things to her discretion, this last time was an absolute disaster and I won't be back. I didn't realize how bad it was until I left because I thought the red tones would calm down and I thought the styling she did would look better once I got my hands on it (she styled with a smaller round brush than usual....and than I usually do). I am so upset, I thought I found someone and was confident I didn't have to worry about leaving a salon disappointed ever again. It was as if she wasn't even the same person. From the cut to the color, I am beyond confused. I came to realize she gave me hot roots as well as a brown color with red tones which is way off for my skin tone (nope, I did not go into my appointment caked in makeup whatsoever). It has been a complete disaster to try and correct this. I have neither the time or patience anymore. I'm so sorry to have to change this review. I understand flukes happen but this was just such a change. I'm talking 1000% perfection to disaster :( read more

After about 6 months of having let my hair grow after a very bad cut, I was looking forward to my appointment with Sage but also feeling very reluctant. I have thick mid-length hair which needs layering but the wrong layering can easily go awry; the above cut. Sage took time to listen to me with respect and care. She was masterful at lightening my hair from underneath and cutting the ends to a one-length look. I left feeling so good and so grateful. Still after having been struggling with styling for some time with a ton of product to keep my hair from looking pine-tree shaped for the past few months, the day came today to wash it, which the effort required to style it would be the real test. It required very little product to look smooth and managed, and the blow-out was quick and easy. Pieces just fell in the right place. I want to thank Sage for her care and skill. I don't really know how I found this salon, but it was a god send! I had just started to realize I had curly hair and was having a difficult time figuring out what to do with it. I met Teal and everything changed. She's super friendly, great small talk and explained everything she was doing and why it would make my hair look great. She has a sunny disposition and I felt confident that my hair would look great. At some point, she began to travel and was unavailable. So I started to work with Sara. What I appreciate most about her is that she is meticulous and takes the extra time to make sure my hair is perfect. When discussing length in relation to the shape of my face, she presents pros and cons, but ultimately let's me decide. She is well versed in products and the products she does sell are reasonably priced. Lastly, I've seem Melissa for all kinds of waxing...and we will leave it at that. She has a bubbly and fun personality, When it comes to eyebrows, she only needs little direction to get them just right. The hair on my eyebrows grows in different directions, but she manages to make them look full and even. I have moved out of Austin and sorely miss the ladies of Shine Salon, but I might just make the journey to get my hair did from women I fully trust. I called ahead and asked if someone would be able to cut my hair last Friday and got to go ahead. I walked into the salon and was ignored for 3 minutes before a hair dressers client said "is anybody going to help that girl". I was then informed no one was a available (even though I'd checked!) and I could come back Saturday at 3:45. This review is specifically for the "DevaCut" option as that is why I specifically went to Shine Salon and Spa to have my haircut over other salons. When I arrived I was greeted promptly and within a few minutes my stylist Stacie came to greet me. We first discussed my concerns with my curls or lack there of at the time and she explained the DevaCut/DevaCurl system before she started. Stacie was GREAT! She explained everything she was doing and why which was comforting since I have had terrible haircut experiences in the past. She really took the time to explain to me how to best take care of my curls and make sure they were back on track to being healthy. The DevaCut involved washing my hair first with the line's products then combing through my hair with the conditioner in and after some acrobatics for drying and curling purposes my curls were back! The cut itself involves having the stylist cut each piece individually so it is somewhat of a lengthy process. Stacie also recommended products and styling tips to me to take better care of my curls. This was the first time I have ever left a salon and did not want to immediately go wash and fix my hair. I was ecstatic to see my hair have shine, curl and bounce back to it! I will definitely be going back here for a DevaCut and as much as my wallet will hate it I will be switching back to the DevaCurl products as I now know they truly make a difference in my hair. read more

Curly/wavy haired friends!!! Go see Kat, she works with your hair and not against it-like every other stylist you've ever seen. It's an amazing experience, and I'm sad it's my first time experiencing it, but better late than never. Every other stylist in my lifetime has cut my hair and then blow dried it straight with a round brush. Even after asking me how I wear /style my hair. I don't- is my answer! I'm an air dry, maybe use a hair oil or cream type of person. I let my hair dry naturally and it's naturally curly/wavy. What a crazy concept, do the person's hair the way they do so they can actually see what the hair cut really looks like. I love it!!! Just got another perm from Kayo Beachler and love it! I like natural looking waves for my straight Asian hair, and that's exactly what I got (see pics). A coworker recommended this little salon, so I went right after work, without stopping for an after-work cocktail. Luckily, the salon offered me a glass of wine! This was just the beginning of an excellent salon experience I had with Kat. I had dark reddish-brown hair, just past my shoulders, and wanted to go blonde and cut it shorter. Kat's consultation was educational and I felt confident that she knew what she was talking about when she recommended all-over highlights instead because my hair was so dark, and she was worried it might not lighten enough. With her 15 years of experience, I took her advice and was extremely satisfied with the results! She cut a lot of the length off first since I wanted to go with a shorter bob, and after the color processing, finished the cut, blow dried and styled it. I have gotten so many compliments from coworkers and parents of the kids at the daycare I work at, I know I have found my permanent stylist in Kat! And to our surprise, it lightened very well, and she said my hair was still so healthy after the lightening that I would be able to come back as soon as the following week for another round of highlights to make my hair even more blonde.
