I come here occasionally whenever I have a craving for Gulab Jamun, an extremely tasty and addictive dessert!! They offer a wide variety of other Indian desserts that they sell by the pound. I hadn't had food from here in years, since my dad used to bring home ras malai from here (which was a fav of mine). When in the area recently, I stopped in for lunch, not knowing that they actually offered a buffet!! I was happy to see this, as they had so many items on it that looked great: * Samosas * Pakora * Rice * Chicken Tikka * Saag with beef * Chicken curry * Aloo Muttar * Chana masala * Gulab jamen * And so much more! The pastry dough used to make the samosa was spot on and reminded me of the streets of Pakistan! The chick pea flour used in the pakora was flavored perfectly, though I wish it had a tad more spice to it. The other items I tried were great! Plus they made me a roti to eat it with. For $12 you get unlimited food !! That's the bottom line here! Is it wonderful food ? Incredible food? Amazing food? No, it's Pakistani food lol ( I love Pakistani food!) I just meant with my joke that it's just food ! Nothing is so special here other than the value , the price and the fresh bread you get! The staff also is nice and refilling the buffet. I loved it when they asked to bring fresh bread! They do ask you first and then bring it! Their samosa was actually so good!! They had multiple good items but the chicken tikka was bone in , I like to eat without any barriers lol those bones were working like a barrier between me and the next plate! A home-y "hole in the wall" place with good food and sweets. Don't let this place's looks throw you off. The AYCE/buffet is $13.99 and you serve yourself then pay after. The honesty system is strong! During our meal, the workers let us try different sauces and explained the options. I don't know the names very well but I had: rice with chickpeas, the "stewed" chicken, tandoori chicken, chickpeas, and eggplant. The eggplant and stewed chicken were my favorite! The meats are all SOOOO tender. We also ordered the Naan and it was the freshest we've had! We ended with dessert from the buffet. It was Gulab and soooo good! It was sweet and perfect to end the meal. Afterwards, one of the workers was so kind as to explain what each dessert was and the flavors. He let us try one of them for free. To preface this review, this is largely a comparison to reference locations for take out, so especially in the COVID Era, please keep this in mind. Shiney, Shiney, Shiney...whether intentional or not, your name reflects how you outshine the competition. Long ago, on a hunt for Gulab Juman, I stumbled across the humble Shiney's, and it quickly became my go to whenever the urge arose. Little did I know until today, that it's not only their sweets that shine! Having cravings for Butter Chicken in recent days, I first looked to order from my local go to, IndaRoma. Nothing against IndaRoma as they are a quality place, but their prices have gone sky high...some of which even exceed the uber upscale Rasika in DC. I then looked around for other sources in the Annandale/Falls Church/Springfield area and while better priced, they were unknowns and few had an "edible" star rating. So, mixed in to my search results on Yelp is that oh so familiar name, Shiney's Sweets. Running through my list while reviewing the menu: Number of options available? Check! Pricing reasonable? Check! Star rating of 4 stars or above? Check! Butter Chicken available? Check! Gulab Juman available? Check! After reviewing, it was a no brainer, Shiney would get a chance to shine again. I placed my order including Vegetable Samosas, Butter Chicken, Gulab Juman and some drinks. All totalling less than the price of one order of Butter Chicken alone from my first choice. This accomplishment alone was a win...until I opened my to go bag. When I opened the bag to prepare my dinner, the rich and aromatic scent of the Butter Chicken filled the room. Oh, how I have missed that wonderful smell during the long lockdowns! --- I know that probably sounds crazy, but it had been a long time! --- I lifted out the satisfying slightly oily bag of samosas, and underneath, wrapped in aluminum foil are not one, but two naan (bread)...hot and fresh. At the previously mentioned place, naan is not even included with Butter Chicken and it is never hot and fresh...it is reheated when ordered. Alongside the naan is a standard container filled with fresh basmati rice to accompany the Butter Chicken dish. Then, at the bottom, the piece de resistance: a hefty and hot container filled to the rim with Butter Chicken. Of note, unlike some other places, there was no puddle of juices or oils in the bag...this was done right. No drippy mess or potential for stained clothes. Carefully popping the lid off of the high quality plastic container, the glorious aroma was fully released. In contrast with the aforementioned place, this is a healthy serving...enough for two. Mixed in with the amber/crimson color sauce, there is an abundance of large (but not too large) chunks of thoroughly cooked chicken. Not under or overcooked, not too big or small, not too hot or cold, just right...like Goldilocks would like it! Sprinkling the rice onto a plate, pouring Butter Chicken on top, then pulling pieces of naan to accompany each bite...each mouthful was like hearing angels sing! Sweet, hot, buttery perfection! Now, admittedly, my cravings made this meal go far too quickly, but I'm not exaggerating on the quality of this dish. There is still enough left over for a second meal...and I didn't go broke paying for it. The samosas are set aside for tomorrow, but, they have always been on par with other Indian establishments that prepare their own. The same with the Gulab Juman...which I'm now reminded at this point that I have sitting next to me ready to eat! *** cue Cookie Monster gorging on cookies meme here *** I hope you appreciated the review, and perspective. Was hungry for some Indian or Pakistani food and preferably an affordable lunch buffet. Shiney's did NOT disappoint! Only $12 all u can eat and I enjoyed everything! Samosa's, Chick peas, Fresh baked Naan, salad and many kinds of chicken. All of it was simply falling off the bone and seasoned to perfection, with just the right amount of heat. Even one plate would have been worth the $12 paid (why would you get fast food when you can get good food fast for the same price!), but of course I had to have a 2nd plate. ;-) My favorite was probably the chicken curry but I thoroughly enjoyed everything! The man at the front was the most friendly server/cashier we've ever met. Even my kids commented on him. Because it was our first visit, he explained about the meals, recommended for me to try their buffet, and even brought us two sauces to try out. The meat was very tender. Butter chicken was a bit too sweet, but extremely tasty. The bread? I want to point out that their breads were the BEST! I'd come again just for their bread. My family have been long time customers of this place. This is a no frills restaurant offering Pakistani cuisine that won't hurt your wallet. The weekend buffet is our favorite. Their curries are packed with flavor. The meats are always juicy. We love their Chicken Biryani. The rice is fragrant and I love the bits of orange color in the rice. In addition to the buffet, they also offer a variety of individual dishes. Their samosas are excellent. Make sure you ask for the sauces it's supposed to come with. Shiney's forks out amazing Mithai (sweets). I appreciate that their mithai always taste fresh. They have a bunch on display. I tend to gravitate towards the colorful ones. Point at the ones you want and tell the cashier how many. It's priced according to weight. They also serve homemade kulfi (mango, pista, and malai). There isn't much going on in here as far as service. It's more of a help yourself type joint. If you're dropping in for the buffet, everything is laid out for you. Plastic silverware, cups, paper plates, napkins, and water are within reach. Naan is also included in the buffet. If an employee doesn't bring it out for you, definitely ask for it. When you are done, clear your own table. If you're on a budget, in the mood for authentic Pakistani food in a no frills environment, this place is for you. The clientele here are mostly Indian or Pakistani so that's a good sign. I don't know much about Indian sweets besides that most of them are tooth-achingly sweet. The guy work at the front patiently told me what each was made of and I picked a couple based on appearance. I think these desserts are quite photogenic, don't you think? The yellow and the pink one are like really juicy macaroons. The brown one tasted like a cross between a donut hole and a baklava. The orange one tasted vaguely like candied yam. The white square with neon green stripe had the consistency like fudge, but instead of chocolate, it has a milky cheese flavor. I got number 9 and 10, cashier was very nice. My food was ready within 10min. In the car the smell was yum. When I got home and opened the food I could not believe i paid $22 for this! About a 2-2.5: I was excited to try this place out as I've inquired about their weekday buffets, and they had samosas on the menu - yay! The restaurant is located in Seoul Plaza, off of Markham St. The price for the weekday lunch buffet was $8.99, which was a pretty good/competitive price. There was a limited selection at the buffet: pakora, chicken curry, samosas, lentils, cauliflower & potatoes, spinach, and chickpeas. For the buffet, you get the styrofoam plate and go back up as many times as you want. The lentils had a kick, but were too bland for me; the chickpeas were not cooked all the way through, and the sauce it was cooked in was watered down as well, and not as thick as I prefer it. The cauliflower and the potatoes were also not cooked all the way through T____T I was excited for the samosas, but they were not freshly fried, but seemed slightly old - the filling was more on the bland side with more emphasis on the potato and contained some chili flakes for an added kick. The same went for the pakora as it was very soggy. However, the pakora's batter was really nice as it had great flavor - I just wished it was fresh! The hubs was not a fan of their chicken curry, as he said that the flavors were not there and it was very bland. The restaurant itself is a little dark, and they also have a la carte menu items and combination platters. They are also supposedly known for their sweets and does catering services and such. I was there this past Sunday to pickup some Samosas, Gulab Jamun, etc. My friend had a baby girl and she wanted to have some good Indian Dessert. Since they live in Alexandria, Shiney's was the closest place that came to my mind. I have to say that Shiney's has the BEST Indian desserts in the Washington DC area - no other places compares to it on a regular basis. I have yet to be disappointed by these guys. They have a good selection of dessert and snacks. My favorite are Laddoos, Gulab Jamun for dessert though Jalebi comes in third. My in-laws have been going here forever and it is there go-to spot for desi food...but I'm not sure why. Usually I love hole-in-the-wall restaurants, I'm not really a fan of Shiney's. We always get the food to go, so I can't speak to the dining inside experience. For our latest meal we got karhai chicken, chicken seekh kabob, channa masala, aloo sabzi, naan and ras malai. The karhai chicken was decent, warm and tasty. The kabob and aloo had some whole spices in it, which I don't really like. For me, there's nothing worse than biting into a whole coriander seed while eating. The channa masala seemed overcooked, it was mealy and needed salt. The naan didn't seem fresh, it was dry and needed either some butter or ghee brushed on top. The raita was really tasty - it had some heat to it, which is unusual, but made it delicious. The issue with the raita was that it wasn't properly emulsified, so there little chunks of yogurt floating in it and that doesn't look appetizing. The ras malai was probably the best thing we got. The consistency of the dumplings was good, the malai was smooth and it was just the right amount of sweetness. read more

This review pertains to their Samosas only.. My friend recommended this place to me, his mother makes the best Samosas so I was really optimistic about this place. Finally today I got a chance to stop by and get 4 of them. Shiney's is located in Seoul Plaza shopping center, every other shop here is Korean owned. Upon walking in I saw many various desserts, other Indian/Pakistani cuisine items and the samosas sitting in the back buffet style. The guy behind the counter was nice and to-go 4 samosas for me. Upon getting home (~1 min away) I was ecstatic to try it out. The samosas were under the buffet style heat lamps so I assumed I didn't have to warm it up. That was a bad choice since it was cold. Their samosas are really big, however personally I thought the filling were lacking in flavor. I have had other samosas from other places and they were more flavorful, one place that comes to my mind is Namaste in Alexandria, VA. To be fair, I think this place is more well known for their desserts. Most Indian desserts are too sweet for my taste, but one day I do want to try it out when I am craving for some sweets. After going there twice now, I can say I like and dislike this place. The food is greasy, but any family-run restaurant is going to have that. The food is overall good, no problems with any of it. I just wish the restaurant was cleaner. They have these light pink walls with marks and scratches and lines all over them, the tables are old. Maybe they should install booths, the tables are always moved around and all over the place sometimes. I always go in for the Samosa Chaat, and the Kulfi. For some reason the south asian restaurants and stores in No.Va never sell Kulfi (milk ice cream popsicle), and claim they don't know what it is. This is one of my favorites restaurant in the area. I love their kabobs, chicken&goat karahi. The buffet options are excellent and very affordable. I would recommend if you like spicy and tasty foods. It is a carry out and small restaurant, so don't expect for someone come to your table. As soon you come in, you can tell the friendly gentlemen if you want to eat buffets or order in the menu. If you want to eat buffets, just get your plate and serve yourself. Get your own drink in refrigerator or ask for tea. I don't mind to do self serving with excellent food and affordable prices. Lunch is for $9.99 all you can eat for whole day serving. I'm very disappointed with their food these days especially when we have tried to support them during the pandemic. When I order delivery from various services, the food that is sent is always subpar and they give smaller portions. Also, they have been stingy with the yogurt. If I order three or four different items, why are you only giving me one small container of yogurt. Food quality has gone down. Why do they do this when we are trying to order from them all the time.
