The food here was very good. See below why I took off one star. I'd read about this place. It's off the main highway. It looks a bit ramshackle from the outside. But it is worth the detour. We sat at the bar, inside, with a view of the kitchen and cook, but I'd recommend sitting outside if it's not too hot and weather permits. That's a much better view. We started with their fried asparagus appetizer. The stalks were quite thin, and the portion small, but what we had was delicious. Especially tasty when dipped in the horseradish sauce. I'd get this again! After that we shared their fish dish. Two scoops on a plate with chopped tomatoes, chopped onions, and chopped green pepper. The cutest heart shaped crackers came with the dip. We had leftover dip so we took it home with us (in our cooler). We enjoyed it on toast later on. So the very good? The food. The not so good? The kitchen looked grungy and the ladies room was a mess. Heading back from the keys and stopped at this place for lunch. It is just off the southern entrance to Card Sound Road, where US 1 and Card Sound split at the Circle K. Gravel parking lot is shared by other marine businesses but easily accessible. We decided to eat inside at the bar. A friendly greeting and menus delivered. Literally this is a place that throughout the day a man comes in named Bubba and there is also probably someone named Ethel that has a plastic flamingo in her yard. This restaurant is off the beaten path, and we came at an off time and it was not busy. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Our server was nice and attentive. We each ordered the combo platter which included mahi mahi, shrimp, conch fritters and your choice of one side. You have the option to have your seafood fried, grilled, or blackened. I went here with my family and have been here before the food has been ok, but this time it was a another scenario. To start the server was nice and fine but the food was horrible. they seriously need to fire their cooks. i ordered a cesar salad with chicken and it had zero taste pretty hard to mess that up right. then my poor mother got a salad with grouper on it and the first bite she took she tasted SOAP dish soap and had to spit it out and so she told our server and he took it back to the kitchen to remake it and then her new salad comes out with a head of lettuce in it and if you know anything about cooking in restaurants or even making salad you know the head of the lettuce is not supposed to be in the food. so i would just say the servers are nice people but the cooks are terrible please consider hiring more experienced cooks. read more

We ate outside under the tiki hut which is on a waterway canal. Very Keyish from the ambience standpoint . From an FYI standpoint the inside seating is very limited with about 6 - 7 tables. Service was slow (just getting menus after sitting down took a while, sat with empty drinks while we waited a long time for food). I have never been here before and my boyfriend has been a few times so he recommended the place. I will have to admit...the food was delicious. We had to start the fish dip, which is amazing by itself. But I knew I needed something else to finish me off. So I ordered shrimp quesadillas and they were delicious. My boyfriend had the Mahi Mahi basket and it was tasty. (I know because he let me have one). I didn't get to order dessert, not sure if it was on the menu or not. But I was so full that I told my boyfriend I probably won't be having dinner tonight. The waitress that tended to us was extremely nice also. The ambiance was pretty good considering it was the afternoon on a Friday no less. But it probably gets crazy busy on weekends. Heard about this place from a local and decided to try it. I got the mahi Ruben (mahi mahi, house made coleslaw, 1000 island dressing, and Swiss cheese) with sweet potato fries and it was really good!! I got a little side of bang bang sauce to go with it and it went really well with it! We also got the local special wings (10 wings for $5) and it was 100% worth the $5. Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful when giving food recommendations ( the ruben was her idea). I Really Enjoy the Grouper Picatta with Garlic Rissoto. The Rissoto and Grouper were actually cooked very well, I have had many in the Keys but no complaints here. There is Small Wine selection but the wine was very well paired with the meal and there is a wide variety of beers and specials. To the desserts: Now.....! The Key Lime Pie was my favorite dessert,it was mildly tart and semi sweet which the staple of it's texture. Terrible Keys service with a side of FRAUD Forget the fact that while dining outside I had to get up and go to the bar inside to get drinks. Forget the fact that the waitress was hanging out chitchatting at the bar when I had to go inside twice to get my drinks Forget the fact that they allow patrons to listen to their cell phones on blast without a care (personal pet peeve) What really got me was the fact that the waitress who was absent and inattentive decided to double my tip amount when she ran the credit card. This is not a simple, honest mistake. I've seen it here in the keys a couple times. That's why I began taking pictures of my receipts. Avoid at all costs. I ordered the Sauteed Mahi Mahi, which is sauteed in key lime butter and served with a nice size side salad and aside dish of choice. I chose the coconut onion rings as my side. The salad was fine, though over dressed, the coconut onion rings were crisp and tasty, and the Mahi Mahi was truly sublime with 3 nice size pieces. The Mahi Mahi was very fresh, perfectly cooked, perfectly tender and moist and had wonderful flavor, with just a hint of salt-exactly the way I love it. Shipwreck's a little bar located in the Northern tip of Key Largo in a tucked away residential neighborhood. It is the definition of a dive bar with a large outdoor seating area and small interior bar area with a few tables. On this visit we had the Crab stuffed jalapeño poppers, onion rings, and clams chowder. The chowder was very tasty! Creamy, contained a fair amount of clams, and seasoned perfectly! The Onion rings were huge, and battered in a panko crust, then fried to where they were crispy on the outside, and the onion on the inside was still juicy. The crab stuffed jalapeño poppers were also fried well. The crab and cheese filling was gooey and salty, while the jalapeños were fresh. It was served with a sweet Thai chili sauce that added to the overall experience. They had a nice assortment of on-tap beers, and they were served ice cold in a frosted mug. I love the dive bar setting, although as a warning to families, I would not bring my kids here. The staff, though friendly, spent most of my time there yelling profanities at one another between the waiter staff and kitchen. It was clearly playful banter amongst employees and did not offend anyone in the establishment, but not something I would want my young kids to be exposed too. I would definitely visit again on my way to my next dive trip. read more

Shipwrecks used to be one of the best places to go get dolphin fried with french fries, a cold beer and coleslaw for a really great price, I'm not sure what happened but it seems like Hispanics have taken over. The price has now start at $28 and go all the way to 42. The atmosphere at this place does not condone these kind of prices. This is a at best dive bar. Cleanliness is at an all-time low, unfortunately, the keys have been taken over by people that should not own business this year. Nor do they know how the keys operate. This place gets a 4 for food but a 1 for service. Came in at 1pm on a Monday for lunch. People were sitting outside and in the bar, but no one was directing traffic, or offering to help. Took a seat outside and ordered a Jai Alai IPA. Eventually go a pint and decided to go with the Seafood combo basket. Mahi Mahi, conch fritters and 4 shrimp. I asked for the Mahi blackened and the shrimp fried, but was told they can only do one way or the other (SMH). Also asked for a side salad with Mango vinaigrette dressing. After about 30 minutes I was asked if I wanted another beer? Said sure and asked if they had anything larger than a pint. 'Of course' and I got what appears to be a 24 ounce mug. Would have been nice to have that option on the first beer. Also asked for a glass of water, which never came. The food came out after 40 minutes. Conch fritters were hot, Mahi Mahi was Luke warm, shrimp were cold. Salad dressing was very good, but it was blue cheese. Overall, food was very good, but fritters tasted like elephant ears. Finished lunch. No sign of the waitress, so I started this review. 10 minutes latter, still no waitress. Never once did she come by, ask how the food was, ask if I still wanted the water I asked for 45 minutes ago, ask if I wanted the check.... Finally got the check, and the review fell to 1 star. Apparently you can get a 16oz beer for $4, but a 24oz beer is $10. Challenged the waitress who agreed 'yeah, that's weird'. read more
