Was very disappointed with the food. Sadly the restaurant has taken its customers for granted and dropped its level to below zero. We ordered 3 items. A mix chat which was mostly tasteless and bland. A rava masala dosa with insipid potato bhaji. And a medu wada that was fried in stale and smelly oil. Really pathetic compared to a couple of years back when we ate there. Don't waste your time eating here. There are many more Indian places that serve tasty and good food. No wonder it was quite empty. I was having a date with my sister and we're both fans of Indian food. We're also both vegetarians and we don't eat onion or garlic. We got there around 11:08 am and there was plenty of parking. There was no real greeting and we were the first customers of the day. In fact, the man sitting down exchanged looks with the lady behind the counter after staring at us with an almost deer-in-headlights look. Not quite sure what it meant - maybe it was too early for English? Haha... I already read some Yelp reviews so I knew not to expect stellar service so it didn't phase me. I smiled and walked to the counter and looked at the menu before asking the lady what could be made without onion and garlic. This may not be a complete list but it included the vegetable fritter, chole bhature, aloo (potato) paratha, masala dosa, and combination Masala dosa set. I wanted to try a bit of everything so we ended up ordering the aloo paratha, chole bhature, and combination dosa. I also heard how their food was a bit on the spicy side so I ordered the rose lassi to offset it, just in case. You then tell them the table number you plan on sitting at. It's self serve so get your utensils, napkins, and water by the station near the restrooms while you're waiting. They'll call out your table number when your food is ready. The dosa came out first so we started on that. It was stuffed with spiced potatoes with sides of spicy soup, a coconut chutney, and what tasted like a watered down kheer. I loved it! Halfway through, the chole bhature was ready. It consisted of two fried bhature that accompanied a chickpea curry with a lime wedge on the side. Yum! Last was the paratha. I was wondering how it would be considered an entree but there were two large and tender parathas with yogurt. Definitely filling. By this time, we could only pick off a bit of the bread and had to pack up the rest. I've only had frozen parathas so this was really good and fresh. The rose lassi was great - you could taste the rose but it wasn't overpowering nor was it overly sweet - the perfect accompaniment to the meal. My sister said it's what she imagined what soap tasted like but she did drink some more so I guess it was a decent soap flavor. There are styrofoam to-go boxes by the counter. For two people, we ordered enough for 3 at around $25. A pretty good deal and we left very satisfied and had some to take home! The entire place was clean and had a good atmosphere. The bathrooms also looked recently renovated but the smaller stall had no toilet paper. Although there were no greetings, the lady was pretty helpful and she knew what could be prepared Jain without consulting the kitchen so props to that! The food does take its time; we were there for almost an hour and a half, but I didn't time the food as we weren't in a hurry. Also another plus: we were the only non-Indians there, so it's got to be legit! We'll definitely be returning! I wonder if there are other items we can have, but I was pretty happy with what we got on this visit! read more

Delicious authentic South Indian food. It was a bit more "fast food"y than others I'm used to, but it might have just been the dishes we ordered. My Indian colleague ordered the food so I didn't catch the names, but many variations of pani puri and things smothered in yogurt, tamarind chutney, and crispy noodles are impossible to go wrong! Since it was a work lunch I didn't want to dominate the table with picture taking, but basically you order at the front, pick a table you'll sit at, and they'll call your table number as items come out of the kitchen ready, which you pick up at the counter. read more

Your best bet in Houston when looking for vegetarian food is usually at an Indian restaurant on Hillcroft. Even though this vegetarian/vegan restaurant has been around for many, many, years it was my first time eating here. I'd give it 2.5 stars. This restaurant is setup cafe style. You seat yourself, get your own water and utensils, order at the front and pickup your food when it's ready. There's a couple people behind the counter who take your order, collect your money, and call your table number. We ordered the papdi chaat, uthapam, mysore masala dosa, dahi puri, and another dosa that had various veggies in it (cabbage, peas, potatoes etc.). I loved the chaat, so so good. Everything else was just okay. The uthapam became chewy once it cooled down. Usually it's supposed to stay crunchy. Food is pretty oily and spicy. Can't really decipher flavors except in the papdi chaat. I didn't try anything else except the South Indian food, so can't vouch for that. You won't leave hungry. Portions are insanely humongous. You seriously get your money's worth. The uthapum came on a pizza tray! I haven't seen food priced like this since I was a little kid. Nothing costs more than $6.00. read more

It was Shazia's review along with time constraints that landed us here initially. Authentic South Indian food Shazia boasts. Completely meaningless to me. I'd had Indian food before, but never really had any idea what I'd been eating most of the time when I tried it. I kind of liked this formula and this menu is definitely conducive to such carefree behavior. The place is nothing much to look at. There are lots and lots of tables and usually Indian MTV playing, which is quite good I must say. A lot of storytelling going on . . .I just don't know what the story is most of the time. Anyway, yeah--this probably isn't the place for romance. Our first time there, we looked at the menu and my girlfriend recognized Samosas. Ah yes--an order of those! Now what? "Let me handle this," I said. Then pointed to random things on the menu. I did understand that there were fruit shakes available. Delicious, delicious shakes! They, along with the plentiful water station, will help you with the dishes that bring heat. Yowsers! So we've eaten here a time or three or four after our initial visit and I'm starting to figure out some of what's what. Whereas the first time we were at Shiv I simply thought, "this is the biggest taco I've ever seen!" The Masola Dosa is my reigning favorite in this taco category. This is a Plain Jane, unassuming sort of experience. Think about the complete opposite of the flashy and imposing Kiran's in Highland Village - go way more plain, more generic, and less "see and be seen." And also forget about having spicy, spicy food (not that Kiran's really did that either, but hey, you can't do everything right all the time.) I agree with inexpensive, definitely. But tasty, eh, I need a lot of spice to consider anything really tasty. Perhaps I need to try something else besides the Chole Bhature but I was led to believe that was what was good. If there's one thing I love about driving down to Houston, it's coming to Shivsagar for their bhel Puri. Enter the doors, and you literally forget that you're in the USA. The place is filled with us Indian folk, with our Indian clothes and our various Indian languages. This I bet, may be a little overwhelming for other ethnicities. But don't worry- we don't bite. The decor is very typical of an Indian 'dhaba'. The furniture is minimal, the ordering is at the counter and they yell out your number when the food is ready. It's semi- self service, if you will. Water and silverware is available on the counters. The food - oh. My. God. The food. I'm quite certain that the bhel Puri i've had here is better than anything I've ever had, even in Mumbai, India. Say what you want mumbaikars :this is a fact. They have fantastic lunch deals thru weekdays. The portions are pretty large so watch what you're ordering. My favourite is however the roti- Subzi , Coz the rotis are so soft they literally will melt in your mouth. They're available to go , too. There's not really much explanation on the menus about the food, so i recommend going here with someone who knows their way around (if you're not from india). I have been at this place atleast 20+ times in last 3 months. This is not a restaurant type place..it's more of a fast food Indian snackery. Menu consists of chaat items from dahi puri, papdi chaat etc to varieties of dosas (indian crepes), rice items (veg pulao, kichdi etc) to idlis (rice cakes), vada, thali platters, fruit juices, faloodas etc. I am a big fan of their chapathi chole and I never miss to order a plate of dahi puri whenever I visit. The quality of food is very similar to home cooked. Not overly greasy and deep fried beyond recognition. The prices are very reasonable. It's a nice place to go for a mid afternoon snack or a light lunch or dinner. Whenever I am in a mood for some lite, clean, vegetarian food Shiv Sagar is the place that first pops in mind. That probably explains my 20 plus visits within last quarter :-) Also, these guys have one of the best samosas in town. We had a potluck at work for which I ordered samosas from here and everyone at work (Indians and non-Indians alike) loved them. Everyone kept asking where I got them from. PS: I used to be a very frequent visitor to Sri Balaji Bhavan on hilcroft till I started visiting Shiv Sagar. This place has much bigger seating area and the staff seems to be more organized with the orders. Also, these folks don't charge you extra if you need an extra serving of sambar or chutney unlike Balaji Bhavan. Both these places have very similar menu and about the same range of prices. I made my second visit to this place, today... after a hiatus of several years. I'm glad that my friend suggested it. While my first visit failed to impress me, today's lunch (Chole Bhatura) was quite good... and only $4.99. The Tali (rice with a bunch of little side-dishes/etc) was similarly-priced. Things are generally under $7. This is Desi place. Straight-up Desi. You pay at the counter, serve get your own water & utensils, and don't appear to tip. The place was full of... wait for it... Desis (well, and, er, uh, me). So, for five bucks, I got a TASTY meal. While I tend to make my food spicy (I cook this stuff), I was really pleased with the chole (some people call it chana -- whatever). It was of the heavily-tumeric-spiced variety (as opposed to the more tomato-accented type). While it wasn't spicy, it was FULLY FLAVOURED. They didn't skimp on the seasoning and, more importantly, fully cooked it! There's nothing worse than too-firm chole. While my friend had warned me that the bhatura would be a bit oily, perhaps we got lucky. It was fine. Well, until I got to it. That bhatura didn't stand a chance. IN MY BELLY!!! I guess that the take-away message is that we all deserve a second chance. I'm glad that they got theirs. I don't mind the very clean, absolutely boring decor. Really, they don't even try. This is a "functional" restaurant. It's not pretty. It's cheap, fast, and good. You don't usually get to trade-off "pretty" to get all three of those... but since I have the option, I'll go back. NOTE: While Balaji Bhavan is also good, this place is a bit quicker. If you're pressed for time, this might be a good bet. read more

Indian food is one of my least eaten cuisines primarily because I have no idea what to order. Fortunately, my sister is pretty vetted with Indian thanks to her food adventures with her coworker, and she suggested we try Shiv Sagar for dinner. Note: Shiv Sagar is vegetarian-only, but with the amount of food they serve you, you won't be missing meat all that much. When you walk in, you stand in line and order at the cashier. You tell them which table you'll be sitting at (i.e. whichever one is free), and you pick up your food when they call out your number. Pick up a water pitcher and cup(s) along with your silverware (if desired; this is Indian food, after all); it's meant to be kept at your table. My sister ordered for us bhelpuri, potato dosa, and 2 thalis. With the thali, you can pick flat or puffy roti - we got both, but personally, I prefer flat since it's easier to tear and sop up all the delicious curries. Side note: food here is pretty inexpensive, so order up! Just be wary to not order too much, though. Bhelpuri is street food, and it's really tasty! Puffy rice with a salty-sweet sauce; it's definitely unique and worth sharing. The dosa was nice and crisp with a tasty potato filling, and the thali was an overwhelming experience that offered plenty of different flavors to keep the meal far from monotonous. Though I can probably count the number of times I've eaten Indian with my hands, Shiv Sagar was great, and I'm glad my family decided to go. Definitely worth going back! read more

Being amazed by cheap price, we two naive eastern asian kids decided to order 6 dishes but cashier was very nice and told us to aware the quantity. We end up ordering Samosa, Masala Dosa, Thali, Chole Batura. And that was lot of food! Everyone in the restaurant was staring at us Bahaha. Everything taste full of flavor and smell so good, I finally got spicy feel in my mouth after visiting so many Americanized Indian Restaurant in town. I especially enjoy Chole Batura's bread(sorry I don't know what do they actually called), it's fluffy and buttery, good with any sauce or even just eat it by itself. After taste testing at the restaurant, we decided on serving pau bhaji, bhel puri, pani puri, and made-to-order uttapum and mysore dosa at the event. It was by far one of the best meals I have had at a large event and I would absolutely recommend their services to anyone! Very Jain diet friendly. Indian food? Fantastic. Vegetarian? Healthy and delicious with Indian spices. The only thing that stopped me from giving a 5 star review is that the service is really bad. My appetizer came out at the end of my meal and I was dining with a friend who received his food first and was almost done when I got my food. As I mentioned, it's delicious but it's upsetting that I was watching my friend eat while I'm hungry and then he's waiting for me to eat when he's done. Just didnt hit the spot. We ordered pav bhaji, rava dosa and papdi chaat. The pav bhaji had boiled green peas dropped from the top. Isnt pav bhaji suppose to have everything mashed?? The rava dosa was on the saltier side and the sambar wasnt tasty. The papdi chaat was the only item that was slightly over average. There are other better options in Houston. One of the vegetarian Indian restaurants in the town, this place does have a variety of food. And most of it tastes good too. But the staff is very rude. Don't even dare to order food online/or on phone. They would surely mess it up some way or the other. This place has a cafeteria kind of a setting and the water jars and utensils are not clean. Ask for bottled water and disposable utensils and plasticware. Although they wouldn't seem to be happy to do this for you, it is definitely a must. I love meat. Steak tartare, fish, seafood, you name it. Yet, when I eat at Shiv Sagar, I don't miss the meat. This is the best vegetarian Indian fast food in town! My favorites are the dahi puri and dal fry chapati. Thali is also really good. I stumbled on this place years ago when I was stranded at discount tire a block away while car was getting new tires. And... I've been going there since. Make sure you take pictures of the food if you like it; their menu does not describe anything, just lists the name of the dish. I'm so glad I finally got to try Shiv Sagar. Many of my friends and family recommended the restaurant and it did not disappoint. They have very good precautions in place for COVID-19. All guests are required to wear a mask. The employees also wear masks. There are hand sanitizers available at the entrance and at the ordering counter. The service was also great. Very friendly and attentive staff. There are many food options. If you want chaat, dosas, or more wholesome entrees they've got it. We ordered they're Mixed Chaat, Mysore Masala Dosa, and Chole Bhatura. All of them were very good! We did not leave anything left on our plates. The Mixed Chaat consists of bhel puri, dahi puri, and bhel. It was nice and chatpata. The Chole Bhatura was absolutely delicious. The Bhaturas (poori) were soft and perfect to scoop up the Chole. You definitely get the taste of India's street food here. I will definitely be coming back to try more of their items! read more

All for previously written reviews are bang on point. Food is all vegetarian, delicious. Reasonable prices. No table service as such it's all self serve. They are okayish helpful behind the counter. Paneer pakoras are yumm. So is the Dahi puri Chaat and the aloo Chaat. Chola bhatura is yummehhhh. Masala dal vada is unbeatable. Samosa, Bhajiya, idli-wada and Dosa are regular good. Some food items are on the oily side yet better than most other places in hilcroft like Shri balaji bhavan or bombay sweets. Parking space is a big perk. Cleanliness is alright. Doubtful at times. The lady in the counter was fine, but I think they forgot our special combination platter. I had to remind them after waiting for some time. The papdri chat was delicious and came quick. The prices are perfect. You order and pay at the counter first, all tables have a number assigned. They will yell out your table number when your order is ready one by one as it gets ready. I didn't realize how oily the food was until I was wiping my hands, can't tell by looking at the food at all. That was one of the best chai I've had apart from my own of course. I placed an online order on the Shiv Sagar website. When I got there, none of my food was bagged and ready to go. I was a little disappointed but, when I finally received my food, I noticed that the heat radiating from my food was...intense. I almost felt like my jeans would melt into my skin when I set the aluminum parcel on my lap and opened it up to an extremely fresh piece of idli and vada. They were so delicious and I appreciate that they seemed to have made the food at the last possible second so that I could walk out with something fresh! I initially didn't think an order of dahi puri and a special dosa combo would fill me up but it was enough for two servings and so affordable. I'll definitely love to go back and try more of their menu. The dahi puri is worth a return trip alone. read more

I was in Houston for 2 weeks for work and was staying right beside Shiv Sagar and this was a place I would go for dinner often. It has good food and friendly staff. I had ragda pattis and samosa chat which was spicy and tasty. I had tried their thali which was filling and not too expensive for the amount of food. The only complaint I had was for samosas, they were a bit undercooked and dripping of oil. But overall a good place and would definitely return is I was in this area. read more

This place is again one of my favorites! Some of the items in the menu are not available elsewhere. I love the Shrikhand poori, sabudana vada and Sabudana khichdi! But based on my experience, both the sabudana items taste fresh on some days(probably fasting days) not on others. And for a restaurant of such quality, the tea is bad!
