Great authentic place to eat sushi and japanese related food. But the price is expensive .

First time to sit at the bar - and just had an out of body experience eating a custom freestyle Chef's roll - fresh spicy tuna, creamy avocado, butter escolar, paper thin lemon, cilantro, roe, chili pepper and unagi sauce. I couldn't stop oohing. Then you pair it with perfectly grilled hamachi kama (yellowtail cheek) with lemon and sea salt and I was ready to kiss the chef and do the happy dance! Customer service was on point. Chef's skills and barside manner - incredible. Taste - balanced, clean, fresh, freaking amazing! Cost - high end taste and delivery for great value. Plating and atmosphere - sit at the bar for one on one banter with the chef or do a table. Wait time isn't long. The restaurant doesn't smell like a sushi joint. Bathrooms are clean too. They close on New Year's day and Super Bowl Sunday. I've been here quite a few times - it's up there for miso ramen, squid and seaweed salad with tako, tempura BUT second to none for hamachi kama and the freestyle roll. Good sushi. Good service. Good price. I'm a mochi fan but I've found that most sushi places don't know how to serve it, and even experienced that some restaurants have stopped serving it because of this. Shoga has mastered this art. They quarter the mochi and let the ice cream soften a very important step. They serve the mochi with 3 different sauces, my favorite was the citrus one. We ordered the mochi after the menus were gone and expected it to be $10+ not even close!! Cheapest, and best mochi EVER!! read more

I am very particular about my sushi. In my opinion, good sushi has whole pieces of easily identifiable firm fish not mashed chopped mystery fish in creamy sauces. The flavor of the sushi here is OK, if you like the chopped stuff. My husband had the gyoza which seemed overly sweet. It was also, just ok. My boyfriend and I ate here last night, and it's soooo good. The Vegas and UB rolls are great. But our favorite was definitely the spicy calamari roll, which was a nice surprise. We already want to go back and get another. I'm not sure if this is always the case, but there wasn't a trace of spiciness. But it was so fresh and amazing and we were fighting over every piece. This is the best place for sushi I had in Provo. The waiter was chill and suggested an off the menu roll for us. It was the best one we had. The fried calamari was an overflowing bowl of squid and sweet potato smothered in this amazing sauce. The sushi was clean and didn't fall apart. We got the Nature, Samurai, and Dynamite. All were tasty. Nature was out of the ordinary because of the cucumber wrap, but had the most fish filling. A little on the pricy side for the nice rolls, but the satisfaction was worth it. I love this sushi place. The sushi here is really tasty and the nigiri and sashimi are so tender and fresh. The ambiance and sushi chefs are great to. My only con is that the waitresses are normally kind of... rude? I don't know if rude is the best word because they are quick, efficient, and check up on us frequently. However, they just aren't very friendly. Sometimes I feel like we are inconveniencing them. From the outside, Shoga is completely unsuspecting. It's a hidden gem. You walk into a dim, quiet setting that doesn't feel over crowded. You can tell the gyoza is made fresh and the sushi is extremely fresh as well. We had the playboy roll which was delicious and the dynamite which was also good! We also had the yakisoba noodles which were good, kind of a tart tangy flavor, not the more savory flavor I was hoping for, but still yummy! Our server was extremely friendly and on point which is key for me when eating out. Service was prompt! We didn't wait long for our food at all and everything came out fresh and hot! I have eaten at Shoga twice now, and although it is a cozy place that seems to be often filled, the food was just outstanding. I love sushi, but there's dishes really stand out. I brought my kids, and the service was excellent. One time I just brought my older children and we sat at the sushi bar which I was always too nervous to do, but the chef was really cool, and make it very comfortable, and it was fun watching him make sushi for everyone. Absolutely loved it, and can't wait to go back. Why people stand in line for Outback next door when they could have the sushi experience of a life-time (and at lower prices) is totally beyond me. And in response to the "Amie R." comment, I just have to say: "Dear proprietors of Happy Sumo: We noticed. Did you honestly think the area is so big we couldn't figure out you are giving bad reviews to your competition? If you had been to Shoga you would see that your review doesn't even make sense. And coming up with an argument that it should have been okay to leave without paying your check is not something most people would agree with -- they would think its a crime! Happy Sumo has a bad location. Get over it. Why don't you try to improve yourselves, or just move to another location, instead of bad mouthing your competition? This place is great! I personally think it is the best sushi in Utah County by far. I don't really even love Happy Sumo. It is always so clean and you never have to wait too terribly long for your food, even when it is busy. I always get the Dynamite roll, it is wonderful! I have had a couple snotty waitresses, but that wont stop me from coming back. love it here! read more

Went with my hot date and had a great dinner. My wife and I enjoyed Tuna Tataki to start. It's easily my favorite menu item in Utah Co. The balance of flavor and texture is what I love about that dish. The tuna with the heat of the sarachi sauce, sweetness and coolness of the tomato, add the creamy avocado. Good stuff. read more

(Warning, this was longer than I intended lol) I only recently found Shoga a couple of months ago and thank God! I've been there 6 times since. Utah Valley had a serious lack of good fresh Sushi and with Shoga I finally found it! The sashimi is almost as good as it was in Tokyo where I used to live. The food is delicious. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable (they even know who I am now and immediately offer me my favorite Sake). The restaurant environment is pretty simple (I think other restaurants that I've given 5 stars to, the rating took into consideration the decor and bravado or presentation of the interior of the restaurant whereas Shoga is definitely more on the simple side). Happy Sumo for instance is a very good 2nd place to Shoga. Beautiful restaurant, decent (but busy) staff and pretty good/fresh sushi. I've been there many times and it's a healthy second choice. However, my first choice every time now will be with Shoga. Simply because at the end of the day, their fish is HANDS DOWN the best sushi you'll find in Utah County. Ps Sakura sushi is hideous! Stay far away!! Pss if you're ever in Ogden, definitely go to Tona Sushi! It's probably my favorite in the state. read more

Your future experience: You enter a darkly lit room, received with a warm welcome from a server. You'll notice that there aren't that many places to sit. This fact makes you feel as though you found gem of a hole in the wall restaurant. Almost as if you hadn't just parked in the same parking lot as In N' Out Burger. You are satisfied that you had decided to sit at the bar. Visually tantalized by the chefs ability to create a masterpiece before your eyes. Your mouth is watering and you take the advice from this review and ask the chef to suprise you. You make include that you would like something fresh, with lemons, and touch of heat. Time is absent as you wait. You ordered miso soup and seaweed with a squid appetizer that has your full attention. You're awoken from your focus by the chef handing you your meal directly. As you eat your mouth is filled with fragrance and reward. You notice the heat you asked for as well and take a drink from the water that always seems to be full. You pay but your not worried about the price, in fact your experience was exquisite to the point that you leave a hearty tip. On your way out you grab a delicious strawberry candy and a toothpick. Walking out of the doors into the night air you feel refreshed and ready for the rest of your night. This is what you can expect when visiting Shoga. read more

I'm surprised at all the positive reviews of this place. This might be considered good Japanese if you've never really had good Japanese food before. But if you are familiar with Asian food and know what it's supposed to be like, then this place is disappointing. The menu is limited, the tempura was soggy, the rice was mushy and seemed like instant rice, and there was loud and annoying music playing. The bass was loud and made the atmosphere of the restaurant weird and annoying. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who wants really good Japanese food. read more

I was impressed with Shoga from the minuet I walked in. It reminded me of a modern sushi bar of Tokyo. I was immediately waited upon by a gorgeous waitress. She made me feel right at home instantly. The sushi was prepared right in front of my eyes. It was very delicious and very fresh. The sushi chef is a master at his trade. The food was also very delicious. It was prepared in authentic Japanese style, not some chefs own creation, or fusion style, like other so called Japanese restaurants! I thought I had gone back to Tokyo to enjoy my dinner out. I was disappointed when I was done eating and it was time to leave. I highly recommend Shoga (that means "ginger" in Japanese if you didn't know). In fact, I enjoy it so much I find myself going back at least four or five times a week. I can't get enough of their sushi. I really could eat it everyday! As far as Amie R's review about Shoga, I find it hard to believe! I am certain Amie must have just been having a bad night. I know that if Amie would have let the manager know of their discontent, he would have made it right. Customer service is at the top of Shoga's list to provide a spectacular dinning experience for everyone I LOVE THIS PLACE. You are missing out if you don't give it a try. Shoga and other Japanese style restaurants are all pretty much mediocre in Utah in general. Only a handful of the items on the menu tastes like authentic Japanese cuisine. If you're in a mood for cheap Asian cuisine, grab your chopsticks and come on down. read more
