3.5 Stars: They have the typical fun show and the food is pretty good, but a bit pricy for what you get. Sometimes the meat can get over cooked and they use a ton of sauce so it can be salty. In the past this was a good place to eat for lunch (haven't been for lunch since Covid) since the 'normal' dining (non-show) has been closed. We tried to go a bit ago and had a hard time getting past the front door due to the long wait so we left. Hopefully when staffing is back up and normal they will be fully up and running. The 'normal' dining part (non-show) of Shogun was the best deal for an Asian restaurant (of the 3 total) in town with good tasting food. The place is cluttered and could use a remodel/cleaning. read more

Visiting MSU and decided to order sushi to go. The hostess was so sweet and helpful. Then I sat at sushi bar and ordered a drink while I waited. I ordered a Cali roll and the Sex and The City roll. I asked for no sesame seeds or masago and then asked for no spicy sauce. No problem!!! The food was amazing and so yum! The manager/owner was very entertaining while making everyone's rolls and gave me lots of local info for our visit. Definitely will be back! read more

This is one of my favorite places to dine. The food is wonderful. The atmosphere is good. When you eat at the grill the show is amazing. It is a great place to take your kids for a meal. The cooks are very sensitive to them and make a purposeful effort to let them know if something scary is about to happen. We often do their take out and eat at home. You can't go wrong visiting them. read more

The ambiance, food, and service were fantastic! The ambiance is a typical Japanese restaurant. It was very clean. The service was very good. They kept our drink refilled and checked on us without being over the top. The chef was great and funny too. He actually talked to us instead of just putting on a show. The food was the star of the show! The sushi was perfectly sized and not too big. Some places put a little filler with a lot of rice. Not this one! The food, our waitress, and our cook was amazing. What was not amazing was the mandatory tip and the manager/owners rude attitude. We were a party of 4 and we were paying separately (2 and 2), both our bills had the mandatory 18% tip. A couple we knew happen to come up for dinner as well and they sat them with us at the hibachi so the owner assumes we're now a party of 6??? I tried speaking with the manager/owner and he laughed about the whole situation. If he wanted to assume all 6 of us were together, at the very max all 3 bills should have only had 6% mandatory tip to equal the 18%.....but to charge all 3 bills the 18%, Ridiculous!! Very poor business practice. I will never be back, and I will be sure to tell all my friends and family. Word travels fast in a small town. read more

Ordered house soup, fried rice and a sushi roll to go. Got there and waited 5 mins for the hostess to come up front to only go get the manager for check out that took another 5 mins. Got home with the food and realized they didn't properly seal the lid on the soup. Cleaned that up and ate the food the sushi which was raw still had the fish scales on it read more

I have ate at dozens of Japanese Restaurants all over the country. I guess I have been spoiled after eating at Ron of Japan and several other restaurants in the Chicago area. This restaurant was average at best. Food was good, portions were small, service was poor, and we got lectured on how to tip. (We needed to make sure we included the rest of the staff in our tip.). Usually we are very generous tippers starting at 20% and go up from there. We left 17%. read more

The food was excellent but drink service left something to be desired. 7 of us sat at the hibachi station and ordered appetizers, drinks, sushi, and hibachi dinners. There were 2 other tables in the restaurant but it took a good 10 mins to get our drinks- 2 bottles of sake, a glass of wine, a bottle of wine, and 2 mixed drinks. The glass of wine was a Chardonnay and my friend was served a glass of a red wine. She notified the bartender that it was a Chardonnay that she ordered but the bartender insisted it was Beringer Chardonnay- I am a bartender and from the Napa Region so I knew it was wrong but my friend took a drink and said it was good so she would drink it. (FYI the bottle of Beringer on the table was WHITE! We didn't point that out to the bartender though!) Then the sushi came out and it was on point! Fresh and big servings too! The seaweed salad I got was excellent and the gyoza appetizer too! And the hibachi was one of the best I have ever ate! The Japanese Steak and Chicken, it just melted in your mouth. The chicken broth and salads that came before the meals were both tasty- you could tell the ginger dressing was homemade. During the meal a friend ordered a second mojito and was served the wrong drink- I took a drink and it tasted like a whiskey sour. She waited to notify a server but I took it up to the bar after a few minutes and asked the bartender to remake it and it was the same bartender who brought out the 'red Chardonnay' glass with a white chardonnay bottle to the table - I could tell she was annoyed and because she had another person make the drink and walked away. The show at the grill was not as entertaining as some of the other steakhouses I have been to but the quality of the food and professionalism of the chef was outstanding. We separately tipped the chef from the bar service due to the service. I would recommend Shogun for the food but for a drink I would head elsewhere. read more

Dinner for five around a grill, joined by another party of five. In the beginning, service was slow, 20 minutes after seating, all we had were drinks. After the grill chef arrived, the pace picked up. We each ordered a hibachi entree: beef, chicken, or salmon. The meal began with soup, proceeded to salad, which was followed by a couple of shrimp off the grill with dipping sauces. On next to grilled veggies and noodles, followed by bowls of rice with the grilled entrees. Portions were large and flavorful, though the salmon was not as fresh as I would have liked, and a bit overcooked. If for nothing else except the entertainment of a grill chef making big flames and juggling utensils, a trip here is worthwhile. read more

This restaurant offers a good portion to price ratio. It's been a multiple visit for me. Usually when I'm more willing to spend money because while portions ate better it is still pricey. Their variety is vast though. Maybe a bit too vast and so it can be hard to make a decision. However, I don't think I've ever walked out disappointed. The sushi is usually a good size and often quite delicious. I would go here over other sushi serving restaurants for said sushi. The plum wine is interesting. Also, their non sushi meals are quite delicious and will leave you filled. I was quite pleased by their typical restaurant offerings. The Hibachi can be nice. I'm just not one for noise while eating. However, if you're looking for something a little different then Hibachi is fun. If it's someone's birthday then be sure to mention it. read more

My husband and I were traveling through Murray on our way to Alabama. We love Japanese steak houses and found a Shogun in Murray. I told the waitress I wanted the Filet Mignon and shrimp and the cost was $24.99 which was fine until she said fried rice was $2.99 extra. We are retired and we vacation and travel at least three times a year. Never had to pay extra for fried rice. It is Hibachi right? The chef was very good. The rice, noodles, vegetables and shrimp was very good but the "filet mignon" was "stringy" and couldn't chew it. My husband complained and we got a whopping $3.50 off the meal. We have relatives in Murray but we will not try again. If I was the manager, I would rethink charging extra for Hibachi fried rice. We will just eat at Kobe, Benihana or other Japanese steak houses and skip Shogun. read more

Poor service. Being busy isn't an excuse to not even be waited on for over 30min. No manager to touch the table. Informed the hostess of our time waiting without anyone getting our drink order and she didn't go tell anyone. Horrible way to treat customers. We did wait to be seated for 15 min then the wait at the table so total time at this place to have to leave with hungry kids and adults was 45 min. They don't care that we have to miss a local event in our communtiy due to this!! read more

I know this is a well-liked restaurant. I have only been 2 times. On my first visit, they gave me cheaper food for another customer for my carry-out order. When I returned, they gave me my correct order, but it was completely cold. On my second visit (about 6 months later), they gave me the wrong menu item. I ordered Katsudon, but they gave me Tonkatsu instead. Although these items share many of the same ingredients, the final product and presentation is totally different for these 2 items. After receiving the wrong food, it is difficult (or impossible) to evaluate the taste. Maybe I will try again in 6 - 12 months? read more

I love hibachi, and the only dining experience I love better is fresh seafood on the ocean! As far as west KY & TN are concerned, this place is excellent. I thought it was odd that they serve noodles with the meal instead of fried rice, but you can add the rice for 2.50 more... which seems pricey for a meal you have already paid $20.00 for. I suggest going at lunch time on Saturday or Sunday when your meal is only about $10 (make sure you order before 2pm, or else you pay dinner prices!). They also use broccoli in their vegetable mix, which is unusual, but my husband and son like it. Great change of pace from the fried and mundane.... sushi is good too. read more

I've eaten here a handful of times. Every time I've eaten at the grill, I've gotten a chef that was less than spectacular. The food was good, but when I'm paying extra to be entertained, I at least want a chef that smiles. My last visit was on Valentine's Day and the restaurant was total chaos. The majority of our meal, people waiting to be seated hovered over our table because the hostess told them to. It was made very clear the staff wanted us in and out as fast as possible. The service was terrible. We had to get up three times to find a waitress. We had a 5 year old with us and couldn't wait for him to see the chef do his tricks. He didn't do any other than an onion volcano. He had the personality of a turnip. We could have been at a McDonalds grill for all the excitement. .My husband's seat and the floor underneath him were really sticky with something. It was in a pool under the chair. We asked 3 times to have it cleaned up. He got a chair from another banquet so he could sit dow. My daughter finally went and got the manager. He cleaned it up himself. Worst service I have ever had at a restaurant of this kind. I have been here since 6:30 and this place sucks. I order with one guy and he seems like he is cracked out of his mind. Then the dude says he is serving me Diet Coke and the menu says Diet Pepsi. Then he disappears for an hour. Finally comes back and says he is getting manager on me. What??? After I finally get the manager we get a new waiter and the service is still bad. Let's hope the food is better than the service. read more

The taste is not the best but it's highway robbery the way it's priced. Every hibachi I've ever been to we are never charged extra for "fried" rice. This place charges $3 if they put the rice on the grill. You can only get steamed rice with the meal. The reason everyone goes to a hibachi place is for fried rice.
