Way overpriced for what you get. Ok here is the lowdown on Shogun. 1. Call and make a reservation. The first time we came, we were turned away eventhough it was 30 mins before closing. 2. Expect VERY slow service. Once seated, it took the waiters 15 mins to take our drink orders. We were there 45 mins before we ever got our appetizers. 3. Not enough servers. There's only 2-3 people for the entire place. They always look rushed and stressed trying to take care of all the tables, answer phone orders, get takeout orders, turn people away who are waiting at the door to be seated. They definitely need more staff! 4. Portion sizes are TINY. I understand we keep it authentic here and in Japan portion sizes are small. But for the price of the food here, I expect my bowl of miso soup to be filled, not half full. To have more than a few leaves for salad. For the sushi rolls to be on the longer side. The food was good, not great. I'm paying a great price to eat here, but the food was mediocre to good at best. I've had better sushi at lower price points. I feel I did not get my money's worth AT ALL. The icing on the cake is they have minimal hours that they're open so it's always a mad house when they actually ARE open. The way that people rave about this place is shocking. I say if you think this is one of the best, please branch out. Honestly surprised at how good this place was. All the sashimi was super fresh and tasted amazing, the yellowtail and albacore were my favorites. The miso Chilean sea bass was great, but def on the pricey side, but I would absolutely pay it for that quality of fish! A small hole in the wall mom and pop shop. First off, the rolls here are not drowning in sauce and copious toppings. They let the fish and roll speak for itself. If you're into the dressed and saucy stuff, this isn't the spot for you. This is probably more closer to an authentic type of sushi restaurant. The rolls are small but that's because they are filled with actual fish and not imitation crab. And it's not a truck tire of rice. They are perfectly sized to compliment one another. The service was perfect. Friendly, attentive, and on top of everything. The ambiance is very much like a small shop. Nothing fancy but that's what makes it perfect. Last but not least, it seems they originally closed down due to a loss in the family. But, thankfully they have comeback and revived Shogun! Best salmon sashimi I have ever had (yes better than sugarfish). I am not exaggerating when I say it melted it my mouth! This restaurant is not ADA proved, no disabled parking and no ramp for wheelchairs at all. We asked if there is any door with ramp, they said no that's all. They even didn't trying to help us. My husband barley walked and sat at the counter seat by himself without wheelchair. We had assorted Tempura, some rolls and some Nigiris. I can tell their fish is good grade, but very small variety. You see the menu I posted, Tuna & Avocado roll is $13.90. Very simple ingredients(rice, seaweed, tuna, avocado and sesame) and price is like a big roll at another sushi restaurant. I guess they get really expensive seafoods from special market. May be we were too much sensitive, but the counter was sticky and the sushi chef was touching a ball-tip pen to check the order and make sushi without clean his hands. The best sushi in the Antelope Valley! Ever since Saku Saki left town, we've been looking for a good sushi restaurant. This place was recommended to us by a sushi chef in Buffalo, NY! The spicy tuna roll is one of the best that I have ever had and I have eaten a lot of them. The chef was very accommodating to our requests. They are a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Shogun is a restaurant for those who are seeking traditional Japanese food. If you're seeking a place that has a large selection of rolls and extravagant creative ones, Shogun is not the restaurant for you. If you are looking for sauces to overpower the taste of the sushi (ie people complaining that their spicy mayonnaise isn't spicy) this is not the restaurant for you. I had heard of Shogun 9 years ago, but at the time I had opted to go to Uozumi, sadly Uozumi closed back in 2013 (long story short they relocated and opened but now none of the old people are there, although it's still a quality sushi-ya). To refocus on my story, that place has been closed because of of an ailing family member so I decided to find an alternative sushi place. Sadly all the places I have been too have been a disappointment. I've been craving a sushi fix, a real good one and almost opted to try Gold Fish, but when I saw how close by was Shogun and the reputation it has for it's fish I opted for the more traditional style. Shogun like my former beloves Uozumi aren't located in the nicest of places. But don't judge a place by it's exterior or interior (which is very minimalist), judge it by what your mouth will taste. For me nigiri is the epitome of sushi. Forget rolls. Yes, you will wait quite a while for your sushi. I think this is a small time operation between the owner and his wife. Masa san, the itamae/chef, is the opposite of Toshi san, former owner of Uozumi. Where I felt like I could talk to Toshi throughout my stay, Masa is busy at work and laconic as he focuses on his preparation. Speaking of, they don't have any pre-sliced fish, they make their tempura shrimp for rolls as rolls are ordered, they mix up ingredients as rolls are ordered, Masa san puts wasabi under your slice of fish for nigiri, etc. Everything about Shogun screams fresh and traditional. Honestly my only complaint is the low selection of fish (but I am happy they have Tai, a very traditional fish in Japanese cuisine), or even the fact that they don't have tamago (Japanese egg omelet) which is how a sushi-ya is considered good in Japan. If the tamago is good then the rest should be as well. I would only come here based on the nigiri. Yes the rolls aren't special, but I don't care for rolls. And yes, the price is pretty expensive, but for nigiri like this, it's worth the price. read more

OMG! Went here last night for the first time and it's literally the BEST sushi this side of Japan. The Yellowtail was outstanding, I'm not sure what he did because it was nothing like what I've had before. The true star of the show was the Halibut, he placed thinly sliced lemon on top and took it to a whole new level. The sashimi was top notch, melt in your mouth, heavenly. I wish we have tried this place sooner! Once you step inside the restaurant, you are instantly transported to a super traditional, sit down sushi place in Japan! Food was super fresh and the quality was top-notch. The Toro sushi was the highlight of our experience there and so was their matcha ice cream. I discovered Shogun in 2005, and I've been going ever since. The freshest and most flavorful sushi I've ever had. It's nestled off the beaten path of Sierra Highway, and it's a perfect, quaint location. You walk in through these traditional Japanese beads hanging as you enter. Greeted by Chef Masa, who is one of the last authentic Japanese sushi chefs left in Los Angeles, and he's been in this location since the early 1990's. Sit down at one of the available booths or at the intimate sushi bar, where you can watch Masa work his magic! I order the 3 combination dinner, which comes with a delicious Miso Soup and a salad that comes with a homemade dressing you want to drink from the bowl. The Golden Shrimp is so flavorful and melts in your mouth. I usually order a spicy crab and shrimp cut roll and a Yellowtail Collar that comes with the best Ponzu sauce I've ever tasted. The salmon sashimi is so FRESH, it's like butter. Knowing Masa goes down to the fish market every day at 3am to get fresh fish for the day is the paradigm. He's not open on Sunday's, because the fresh fish right off the boat is not available on Sunday's! I've introduced relatives and friends to Shogun, and they all come back. It's worth the drive to Palmdale, and you'll be planning a road trip at least once a week for this amazing sushi. read more

Granted I was "scolded" (not really) about wanting a spoon for my miso soup the first time I went. I thought it was cool and authentic. Who really cares about a spoon?! (*cough*apparently other yelpers *Cough*) Seriously though the food? Shut the front door my friends. I used to live in San Diego and this blows pretty much everything down there out of the water. Yes they are a bit more expensive than other places but you get quality. Massive increase in quality. My man and I's favorite meal? Sashimi starter for 1(MP, you've been warned!), then a 2 or 3 item combo (which comes with soup and a salad #bestmisosoupever!) with tempura, goyza, and whatever else sounds delicious, finally to finish off an albacore roll. of course 2 large Asahis as well. Is it over $100? Most times. But has that ever stopped me from going? Nope. This place is my GO-TO sushi joint. Please just be patient. I want to start off by saying they were very polite. But the food was slightly over priced and very bland!!! They didn't even salt their edamame beans (kinda strange to me ) I ordered four different rolls, and not one of them came with anything on the outside of them (except rice of course). I was quite disappointed! If you like simple rolls, like the California roll, or something like that. Then you may love it here. Let me start off by saying that this is the only sushi restaurant I go to in the Antelope Valley. They take great pride in giving you a true Japanese experience. Their fish are always fresh and at the highest quality and they don't gimmick the dishes with dressings and add ons that hide the taste of lower quality fish. They let their skills and ability to find the best fish speak for themselves. Per request, you can ask for real wasabi which is a perfect compliment to the great fish! Their California rolls are made with real crab (no imitation crab allowed!). They make their spicy tuna fresh daily (they don't buy the pre-made containers of it). Our family order is: Salmon sushi, Toro, spicy tuna, Rob Roll (secrete menu), yellow tail collar, gyoza, and edamame. We highly recommend this for anyone that wants high quality sushi in the Antelope Valley. read more

This is by far the best sushi restaurant in the AV, as far as quality of fish. It has been around for decades, somewhat of a hole-in-the-wall, hidden just off of Sierra Highway. I used to come frequently with my dad as a kid, and have been coming more lately now that I'm back in town after living up north for a while. Best quality fish around here (it's rare to find something comparable even in LA, SF, NY, SD, and impossible to find within a 45 minute drive), accompanied by very friendly staff, and a relatively concise menu. Same chef that has been there since I was a child. Prices are higher than most out here, which matches the quality of their fish, and there aren't a ton of speciality rolls. But if you enjoy sushi (not just rolls), then this place gets one of my highest recommendations. Come here for quality food, not a cheap deal or all you can eat. read more

The best sushi in the AV! I am not a sushi snob what so ever (I eat grocery sushi at stater bros on 47th and avenue S and they are amazing for cheap sushi), but I have tried every sushi spot in the AV area (because their is truly not that many) and this is hands down the best in quality and in taste. You have to make reservations (understandable since the hours are super limited each day, that's because they get and prep the fish that day) and because there is only 1 waitress and 1 chef serving 3 booths, 4 tables and the sushi bar, you going to have to wait for your food to come a bit than your typical sushi spots in AV (or really anywhere). The price is up there for some of the rolls, but if that's not an issue, this is going to be your go to sushi when driving down to Santa Monica or anywhere an hour out, isn't an option. Hands down best sushi ever (better than sugarfish or kazunori) will be definitely coming back to celebrate any occasion again. read more

I would like to try something else but Miso salmon is too good pass on ended up ordering the same thing. Mieko-San is very friendly and nice to customers. Love this place. This is real Japanese sushi made by a single real Japanese sushi chef who takes time and care in making sushi. You won't find great conversation with the chef here. He's busy making your amazing food. Also It's very typical in Japanese culture. I have had a lot of sushi in Japan and this place reminds me of Real Japanese food. The fish is fresh, the food delicious and worth every penny. My husband and I make it a point to come here at least once a week because places like these are rare in Antelope Valley.
