We hadn't been there in a very long time but thought we would try it again. The sushi was dry and tasteless. I received my Meal and was almost finish before my friend received his. We asked for several things that were never delivered to the table. When we asked why it was taking so long for his meal the boy said he's cooking it to which I added why would he cook it it's sushi just like mine. This is hands down the best Japanese Sushi restaurant I have ever been to. I have grown up going to this place with my parents and their friends, and I've recently started introducing my friends to it. About a year or so ago I went with one of my guy friends and we completely gorged ourselves on random sushi he selected off the menu. Everything melted in my mouth and was full of flavor. Nothing tastes artificial or contrived. It is all fresh and absolutely perfect. Masa is extremely friendly and I always feel very at home in their tiny accomodations- as if I'm eating their homemade food in Masa's dining room at home. I usually order one of the combos so I can get a little bit of everything. I am a sucker for Japanese salad dressing, and theirs is fantastic. The Miso soup is perfect. I've tried almost every option on their combinations and have never been disappointed. I remember thinking my friend was crazy when she explained what "golden shrimp" is, but it is possibly one of the most creative, unusual, and tasty things I have ever tried. (If you don't know, it's some kind of egg with a syrup on top of a piece of shrimp... weird, I know!) At a lot of Japanese restaurants I have been to, the tempura is sub-par. It is usually just COVERED in greasy nasty fried stuff that isn't even right. Shogun tempura is perfection, with a light, crispy coating and fresh veggies and shrimp. You know when the owner of a restaurant commutes to get fresh fish every day the place has got to be great. I always leave completely satisfied and way too full for my own good. If you are looking for high quality sushi by a master sushi chef, look no further than Shogun. Masa is a master and he takes his sushi slangin very serious. Having been a sushi chef in my younger days, I was fortunate to have been taught some of the ins and outs of proper fish mongering and Masa and Shogun embody a great deal of best in class. There is nothing fancy with the decor but seeing how the star of this show is the sushi, it is acceptable. It's a little small so no more than 6-8 people in a group. Prices are reasonable considering the quality. If you live in the AV you might feel it is pricey. But it is worth the extra dough if you want top notch sushi. Service can be slow. I believe it is only Masa and his wife who work there though, so it is truly a "mom and pop" joint. If you are looking to quickly get in and out for lunch or dinner you may want to pass. If you are looking for a more lively environment, I would say Goldfish is a better choice. Same holds true if you are going with friends who may not appreciate high quality sushi and really just want some sauce covered rolls or cooked rolls. Not to knock Goldfish because I think it's great and their fish is pretty good. It's just not Shogun quality. Overall, if I had my choice (and unlimited fundage) this would be a weekly stop for me. read more

Well I decided to go this week for some sushi and after reading so many great reviews about this place I decided to forgo Uozumi. It is a bit tricky to find the place if you are stubborn like me and want to drive around until you find it, the parking lot is pretty tiny as well so my Chevy Silverado was a bit of a tight fix...I did notice a few people just parked on the side of the street instead so I would recommend that if you have a larger truck. The decor is nicer than Uozumi, it is a bit more zenlike and the furniture matches at least...the sushi bar is nicer as well. The furnishings are plain but they get the job done. I was waited on by an older Japanese women that was extremely friendly and did a very good job. I am assuming that the only person making the sushi would be Masa and I did not find him to be very personable and friendly when I went there, maybe he was having an off day but it did put me off of the experience a bit hence the 4 star instead of 5. The food is pretty no-frills, I opted to get a sushi dinner combination which included a salad, miso soup and rice. The miso soup was served without a spoon (not sure if this is normal or not) it did not bother me but I had to swirl it around to mix the miso up with my chopsticks and slurp it from the bowl. It was pretty good though and not to salty and tasted fresh, the salad was also pretty good and I enjoyed the ginger dressing. The sushi menu itself had many different combinations so I was able to get one that included the freshwater eel, salmon, white tuna and a few other things that I usually enjoy getting for about $25. I do not enjoy getting cooked or fried sushi so I really liked that there were quite a bit raw options. I feel that compared to many of the other sushi places here in the AV it is a bit pricier but the fish was very fresh and the sushi was was delicious, he also put wasabi on the sushi pieces when he served them which I don't see to often and how it should be done. So if you are looking for quality over the all you can eat piggy fests at the other places then go here because I left stuffed for what I got. So I think I still like Uozumi better because I experienced friendlier service from the sushi bar and they have a bit more variety on their menu plus they have a nice happy hour special, Shogun is very enjoyable as well and I would probably go back again to try more of their menu. read more

Have been in twice since my initial visit and most recently last weekend. They service as usual is friendly and they seemed to have picked up some additional wait staff. They are attentive in refilling drinks and checking to make sure everything is ok. The interior is nicely clean and nicely decorated. It's a good place to sit down and enjoy the company of friends or family and talk while enjoying some delicious food. I always opt for different nigiri pieces and also a yellowtail roll.. Somehow I have been asleep at the switch! This is, hands down, the best, highest quality authentic Japanese restaurant in the Antelope Valley, and certainly one of the best in Los Angeles county. The sushi is simply the freshest you will find, and it goes beyond cut or baked rolls to seasonal specialty nigiri and sashimi. The service is well paced and the atmosphere envelopes you in the Japanese style of years gone by. The chef(s) are artists in preparation and presentation so whatever you order it's sure to please. Yes, the food good. With the hassle? Meh. I don't think so. Worth the time and wait? Yes. But I checked the attributes and it said it was good for kids. NO IT ISN'T. no high chairs, no booster chairs. So we spent the better part of our evening out wrestling our 2 year old. $100 dinner for 2? No full bar, no high chairs and not even a decent bathroom. There's clearly piping problems in the dining area that were poorly repair that just adds to the ambiance of central Palmdale. It's been over 10 years since I've lived in the valley. We were visiting friends and I suggested this place we used to go to that had amazing sushi! Ahi salad was the best I've ever had. Low and behold, not only was the food better than I remembered.. it was a hit with our friends who we were welcoming their new baby girl!! The place was packed and it looked exactly the same. Shogun has been a restaurant that I've frequented for the last 20 years. I normally have an excellent experience because Masa(chef) prepares some of the most delicious dishes I've ever had in this genre. The service is hit and miss and to be quite honest, the best service received is from a server that has long since retired, so mediocre at best post Matsi's(waitress) retirement. This is why I'm providing 4 stars. Tonight was admittedly the worst dining experience that I've ever had due to the fact that we never even ate. We were seated promptly, but then sat ignored for 25 minutes. Granted, this is a very small restaurant, so we made eye contact with three of the servers and never were greeted. My wife actually got up to get our menus. We sat and listened to the server mention to the table next to us that they were out of chicken. That was rather strange, to say the least. Considering the staff was so disorganized and flustered, we decided that if they were out of the Chilean Sea Bass (highly recommend) that we would leave and take our chances elsewhere. Long story short, they were out of the bass. We left thinking that we made the most prudent choice, but we're still incredibly disappointed. Best sushi in the Antelope Valley, and one of the better places in all of LA county. The sushi is of the highest quality and standard. Super small parking lot, but plenty of street parking nearby. The restaurant building is really small and the air conditioning isn't very good for certain parts of the restaurant. Service is super slow, but very friendly; makes it hard to be mad at them. There are a TON of regulars there that are on a first name basis with the whole restaurant staff, which felt a little uncomfortable for us being outsiders. At the same time, it shows how good they are. Overall, high marks for the food and friendly service. We'll probably become one of those regulars soon. read more

Admitted sushi snob here...just getting that out of the way, lest someone accuse me of it do diminish this review. But by sushi snob, all I mean is that I've had plenty of sushi over the last 30 years, in many cities and countries and quality that spans the gamut. With that proviso in place... I can't see how Shogun is so well reviewed. Maybe it's just reviewed highly compared to the other local options. I don't know. What I do know is that nothing about my visit there felt anything above average (except for the price). First, the service was unbelievably slow given that there were only 3 customers there. Second, the owner/purveyor had zero interest in communicating with me. I wanted to ask about the fish, his recommendations, etc. but I never got more than a single word. Third, the fish was nothing special. It wasn't bad mind you, but it was average at best. Which brings me to another point. I'm not sure who amongst you enjoys uni, but there is a general concensus that I've found pretty universal. Uni is either loved or hated, and given the fine line that is walked there between sushi perfection and disgusting it is either great uni, or it shouldn't be eaten. So when I see it on the menu I always make a point to ask the chef. Case in point, while I was in town I went to another spot (Harbour) and the chef there flat out told me that it was just okay which steered me away from it. No reason to pay Market Price for something you won't enjoy. Back to Shogun, when I asked after the quality, the chef looked confused. I asked him again, "Is the uni good" and all he said was "Yes". So given his vouching for it, I gave it a shot, and I regret that. It was on par with the mediocre/bad uni I've had in a number of places. Now I'm on the hook for $9/piece of nigiri and I couldn't be more disappointed. As to the rest of the meal, the nigiri was okay (hamachi and sake). Nothing to write home about, but nothing really off. Then for the maki, I had the rainbow and spicy yellowtail. The rainbow was in line with the nigiri, but at the premium price ($19? I think) it really could have/should have been better. The spicy yellowtail was another matter. The spicy sauce (sriracha) only made it to half the roll. Not exactly sure how that happened, but it did. That and the roll was assembled in an amateurish fashion with empty ends/etc. I know it sounds like I'm picking nits here, but at the price point this should be a good quality fish and a good environment. This was neither. Indifferent service, mediocre fish, a lack of quality of assembly, and a few other minor things really peg this place as an "at best" 3-Star experience. The fact that I'm paying 4-5 star price takes it down a peg for me. I've had exceptional sushi in places like Scottsdale that doesn't have ready access to an ocean that were priced similarly. I've had mind blowing sushi in multiple cities in Japan that were literally half the price of this. How so many people have reviewed this place and have it in at 4.5 stars which essentially is 0.5 stars below the likes of Saito/Jiro (given a 5 star max) I think some people would be amazed what REAL quality sushi is like. read more
