I am going to start this review simply - if you are searching for your new eye doctor and want your "forever home" for all things eye - I highly recommend Shopko Optical in Crystal Lake. After years of going to different eye doctor locations, and the experience never truly going well, I decided I needed to take things more seriously. This time, I took the time to look up a credible location near my home that I could look to continuously go to in the future. The one that stood out was Shopko. After reading the reviews, I decided it would be worth a shot to try somewhere new. Besides, if it didn't go well... that's what I was used to so it wouldn't be much of adjustment. Wow. The experience was great! The service fantastic. Staff knowledgeable, helpful, and welcoming. I was so impressed with the experience from start to finish. When I arrived, I was greeted by the staff and promptly set up for my appointment. I had Doctor Joe Herba who was friendly, fun and helped teach me some new things about eyes and my specific type of contacts. Joe was an absolute pleasure. After the appointment with Joe, I was then walked over to meet with Katlyn. Katlyn assisted me with pricing, styling new glasses, and provided many recommendations. I explained to Katlyn I am in the process of trying a new hairstyle for a wedding coming up - and want the right glasses to match. I immediately thought Katlyn would kind of shrug me off and leave it to me to find a pair I liked. She instead came over and provided many recommendations. She even keep the convo friendly and light throughout the process - even when I tried the same 2 pairs of glasses on at least 10 times :) I am so happy to have tried Shopko. I am glad they have the staff they do and I know anyone else who's searching for their "forever home" - would be just as impressed by the amazing service from Katlyn, as well as, the great appointment with Joe. I was amazed at the level of service considering the pandemic. Upon my arrival my temperature was taken (oh boy I was happy it was done with a digital thermometer and not a Rectal one) and led to a sanitized room with sanitized equipment. As always Dr Herba, our favorite eye doctor for many years, checked my eyes with his never ending smile and calm demeanor. After the exam Mrs. Griselda provided assistance in choosing a beautiful frame with much needed patience as I was looking at all different frames (by the way no matter what brand you choose, they are mostly made in China, the same country that produced the Corona Virus) to see which one fits my face better. She was kind enough to wipe all of them clean as I touched them. They were so nice that I have no doubt if there was no pandemic, I would be having dinner there while choosing my glasses. I've been going to Dr. Herba for the majority of my 19 years of life and I always love going to see him and checking in. He doesn't only check my eyes but he also checks in with my life, in terms of academic and future plans and he always has interesting and amazing advice/stories to share. Good jokes as well. My prescription is always where it needs to be and Dr. Herba has been actively working with me on a special eye issue I have for a number of years, recommending other specialists for me and what not. Additionally, the opticians and all the rest of the staff who get you checked in and checked out are extremely helpful and caring, going out of their way to help you make the best choices. On my visit today, Emily in particular went above and beyond to help my mom and I check prices and insurance coverage for new lenses and frames, and was just very friendly overall. read more

Today I had an eye exam at the new Shopko Optical in Crystal Lake. I love the warm, friendly staff and their willingness to help patients. I have been a patient of Dr. Herba for over 20 years and I love him. Today I had an appointment with his colleague Dr. Brett Freitag. Dr. Freitag was extremely knowledgeable and used all of the State of Art equipment with ease. He answered all my questions about my dry eye condition and offered a game plan to help me. I was not rushed and he explained all the different tests that were performed and why they were performed. Today I tried contacts for the first time. I've been seeing Dr. Joe Herba for almost 20 years. He's the best Dr I've seen for eye care for almost 60 years. His office is extremely well run and all of the staff with whom I worked today were great in terms of their up beat attitudes, knowledge, cheerfully answers my questions, commitment to ensuring every step of the process was explained fully and to my satisfaction. Maddie was especially helpful in helping me select my frame and lenses. And, as usual, Dr. Herba was excellent is explaining the results of his examination, especially the check of my retina in view of one of my medical problems. Great Doctor, great staff. read more

I recently had to change vision stores as where I currently was going no longer took my insurance. I had received good feedback when I reached out to people on Facebook about this particular vision provider. He was under Sears for a good number of years and recently switched to Shopko. Their new store is beautiful and everyone there was extremely helpful and provided excellent customer service. The best part is that I'm picky when it comes to my vision and this provider worked hard to make sure he met my criteria. This is a welcome addition to the Crystal Lake area!! In a time where most things are changing and NOT for the better, Shopko Optical is just OUTSTANDING!!!! We have been customers for a few years and the service has always been just plain great. Dr. Joseph Herba is an "old-style" optometrist. Meaning that he takes the time to fully explain all the aspects of the examination and that he cares about his patients. I haven't been to an eye doctor in some time. Dr. Kluge explained everything to me when I had questions and made me feel at ease. I did not have to wait long and that is always a good thing. My first appointment here. All of the staff and optometrist were unbelievable. There was no push to make any purchases. I felt comfortable, they sanitized the work spaces and checked their temps. I have found a new eye doctor! Just hard to believe that all was good. I have been told by other doctors I needed to have my cataracts taken care of.
