I didn't know they served beer and wine, which was nice to have with your sandwich. I wanted to try the Muffaletta. I brought my own gluten-free bread bun and the other person with me ordered the same sandwich but with the bread; and they truly enjoyed it as well. My only issue with the sandwich is that the Portella mushrooms took away from it, rather than enhancing the flavor. Overall, good experience, decent service, I will definitely be back to try more items off the menu and check out their shop.

Fresh bread, freshly cut meats and cheeses and made with pride. It's a true gem. They sell their deli meats and have a nice selection of Italian wines too. You enter and get in line to order. When the order is ready, they call your name and bring it to you in a simple brown bag. There isn't a lot of seating so we get our food and go to a park to eat. I love this place!

I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing. Soft or hard roll. Extras: Peppers (+.50) Cheese (+.50) - (Turkey is reserved for the "Other Subs). 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese --- $8 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $9 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $12 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $13 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $14 The subs are heavy and delicious. Soft sub buns, tons of stacks of meat, lettuce and tomato or not. No one goes hungry after a sub here. Some deli spots tend to skimp on the protein, but not this place. My team members favorite is the Italian, 6 stacks. I usually will go for a turkey or chicken stack. They offer up to 18 stacks, haven't tried that yet.

We tried the spicy chicken caesar and the reuben angelo (made it the angelina by swapping turkey for the corned beef). The spicy chicken caesar was very tasty but I loved the angelina. So much flavor and texture in one sandwich. My only minor complaint was that the thousand island dressing needed to be better spread out, but who cares when the sandwich is this good? I would definitely eat both sandwiches again and go back to try the rest of their menu. We ordered online and it was ready when we came to pick it up. The staff was friendly and they have plenty of people working (one at the register and 3 making sandwiches). They have a few tables (the space isn't that large) as well as a single bathroom.

The combination of the sandwich was amazing. But one thing held this back... the focaccia was dry and fell apart. Wash bite I took, small pieces fell off (no not crumbs haha). I'm gonna start with the egg rolls, they were by far the best part. Absolutely fantastic flavor and the #75 sauce made it even better. The chicken tenders were good; but the fries were not that great. Maybe piling the tenders on top made them soggy but we ate it within minutes of receiving it. The house ranch made them better. The Atwater chicken has a lot of potential, the garlic cilantro aioli needed some salt or something, you can taste it has good body just lacked punch. So the chicken sandwich was just ok. Service: Amazing, my brother made good recommendations and they were pretty quick about getting the order ready. Always appreciate a kind face that doesn't need to rush you as you ask questions. Ambiance: You can get expensive gas while you wait for your food. I'm sure it's an awesome spot when the weather is warm. It's definitely a spot to come back to. We enjoyed our meal.

I talked to John Lambert, one of the new owners, and he said the original owner, Yvet Muftari had stayed on for 3 months after the sale of the restaurant to share the recipes and train the staff to insure continuity of food and service. Today was the first breakfast I had from Mike's. I ordered a half order of eggs, ham, and toast. It was huge. I asked John what is the difference between a half and whole order, and he said the ham circles the entire plate. OMG! Check out the pic. I got lucky today and got a double yolker. I understand Mike's still makes the mile high ham sandwiches with that extra slab of ham on top. Of course, the bean and split pea soup are incredibly good, too. If you've never eaten at Mike's, you're really missing out. Give it a try and you'll understand why "famous" is in the name.
