I don't know how busy it is normally, but this past Friday they were very busy, the staff was highly stressed trying to move quickly to help everyone, that they forgot to smile. That was unfortunate because we would have loved to feel more welcomed. I read a previous review about the fish having no salt but I actually I like to add my own seasoning. I usually like my tuna melt toastier with the cheese completely melted and this wasn't the case, but the tuna tasted great. After adding a little salt and lemon to the shrimp, they tasted okay. I was skeptical because old white people typically only eat bland food. I was right to be skeptical. The Shrimp House has been on the corner of Live Oak Ave and Peck Rd. long before I was born. Seen so many times on my way to/back from work, but never once did I stop to step in to try. Finally decided to try it out after kids basketball practice. The place is nicely decorated as if you are on a boat. The restroom door with porthole windows adds a nice touch to the decoration. The seafood doesn't have sea water flavors, but portions are sizable. The items we will for sure keep going back for are the fried zucchini, which is fried to perfection and the zucchini is fresh and juicy. The Manhattan Clam Chowder is our 2nd choice, for those that are lactose intolerant you don't need to worry about it as there is no milk/cream. It's simply a tomato base soup with spice, oyster, celery, and carrots. They give a huge portion of ranch for the zucchini, which at first we all thought was the New England clam chowder, because they were courteous of including spoons for us to share on the side. Aren't we glad we ordered the Manhattan Clam chowders (Red) and didn't dig right into the ranch. We all had a great laugh. Even though I have lived in the area for 8 years I only started coming here less than 2 years ago and I wish I can sooner. This is an American style seafood restaurant. However the winners for me from here are the steak sandwich and the tuna melt. It's a good size portion for a good price. The steak sandwich is made just right and it's big. They should rename their ceviche to "onion ceviche". I like onions but this is just laziness! The pieces were too big that all I could taste is onions in the ceviche. I had to take some pieces out as you can see in the picture. Disgusting. The cucumber in the ceviche wasn't fresh at all. It was saggy. I got like 5 pieces of shrimp. We also got two fish tacos and fish and chips. The fish and fries had no flavor. The only reason we went here is because it's close by and they have four stars on Yelp, so we thought it must be good. Like the kind of dry where you chew it and you just don't want to swallow...scallop was good and shrimp was good but yea the batter was soooo thick not crispy and light. Shrimp salad was pretty good though lots of little shrimps. The waitress asked me what dressing and I said on the side and she was like ok yea what dressing and I said ohhh balsamic. The salad came with no side dressing and I was like uhh the dressing? And she's like yea balsamic right? It's inside did you want more? Brooooooo. Huge puddle of dressing under the salad blehhhhhh. I ordered the Cajun shrimp and clams both priced around the same at 14.99 to 15.99 a side of corn and rice. It's by far the best Cajun shrimp I've had in a long time. I've been here a few times recently and the batter on the fried items is excellent. Had the red beans and, rice it was delicious. The waitstaff is efficient, and I don't mind them having a chat with the customers because they were keeping an eye out for the needs of the rest of the customers. Having a cordial staff is a plus for me. The only thing I'd urge the owner to do is refurbish the interior decor to give it a fresher look. But keep the Shrimp House vib. I heard about this place from someone on a local thread looking for seafood. Tonight was my second visit and I'm looking forward to my third! I've just had the large fried shrimp, fried scallops, and fish & chips so far, and all items were very tasty. Biggest plus was the fish was not greasy (like so many fish & chips shops), just flaky and full of flavor. Also have tried the clam chowder and it was thick and satisfying. My husband was a fan of the chowder in the sourdough bread bowl, as well as the shrimp sampler. Thumbs up! The staff is all very friendly, and our server tonight, Maria, was terrific. All Laura's, Armando, all have a great smile and know our orders. Constantly keep our drinks filled, and check on you regularly no matter how busy. We ate here tonight and the shrimp (which is the specialty item after all the name of the restaurant is the "Shrimp House") was subpar to say the least. My wife even wanted to check if there was a change in ownership but looking on Yelp I see that it is the same owner. We upgraded for the jumbo shrimp and they tasted old as if they were leftover from the day before. I even had a hair on my plate. That being said our server Laura who has been there as long as I have been coming is probably one of the best waitresses of anywhere we go (top notch). Had a free day and decided to go here since I've been looking at it for a while. Hit up my yelp bookmarks and this popped up. The restaurant is on the southwest corner of Peck and Live Oak. Entry curbs to the parking lot on both sides as well as street parking on both sides. The place is cozy, nice, and clean. There is counter seating front and center. The wait staff is very friendly and courteous. The menu is extensive. Ask for recommendations, they'll be glad to help. I ordered the fried catfish, with side of steamed vegetables and a cup of red beans and rice. As the place is named Shrimp House, I added an appetizer order of popcorn shrimp. The popcorn shrimp was average, not the best and not the worst. Came with a cocktail sauce dip. They literally mean popcorn shrimp though as the 13 shrimp came on a bed of popcorn. The breading was not too thick and the shrimp is meaty enough. It's definitely not the cheap cheap popcorn shrimp that is 95% breading with a little shrimp flavoring. The fried catfish though... OMG. I've never had catfish this tender. The coating was flaky and flavorful, and it perfectly complimented the melt in your mouth white flesh of the farm raised catfish. It had zero fishy smell or flavor either which can plague some catfish filets. Came with 2 dippers of tartar sauce, although I asked for Louisiana hot sauce instead. Understand that this is an American fish fry, not a soul food joint, so the fish is the fish and chips style, with plain lightly seasoned flour coating, not the spiced crunchy cornmeal breading. But that lends itself well to being paired with tartar or hot sauce. The red beans and rice went well with the hot sauce. It's thick, but lightly flavored. Like I said, it's not soul style with Andouille sausage and turkey necks. They do flavor their steamed vegetables with pepper and some light oil. The patrons were friendly as well and quite a few struck up conversations with each other over their meals or waiting for their take out. Did I mention they play country music here?
