Boston Lobster definitely does. I've seen a lot of reviews for Kim Tar, and personally, I thought it was just alright. Some of the dishes lacked flavor, and I'd probably give it a solid 3.5 stars. Boston Lobster, on the other hand, is a place I'd actually come back to when I'm craving this type of food. The dishes have noticeably more flavor, more depth, and that extra kick that I felt was missing at Taste of MP. What surprised me most is that Boston Lobster can hold its own against some of the better Cantonese/Vietnamese restaurants I've tried in Orange County. In fact, I'd say some of the dishes here are even better. If you're looking for bold, flavorful Cantonese/Vietnamese-style seafood and family-style dishes in the area, Boston Lobster is definitely worth trying.

I was already in the area and when it was time for dinner I was walking around to see what looked good. I was so excited to see Stinkin Crawfish. It was weird though because I went to the restroom to wash my hands, and when I came back, they gave another group the table they gave me. I picked a different table, but I thought that was odd. After a quick glance at their menu I saw that they had Happy Hour is Monday to Friday from 4 to 6:30pm. It was a bit pass 6pm so I put in a Dozen Oysters (HH $15 | regular $33) while I looked at the rest of the menu. Ugh regret. These were SO BAD!! First off, the majority was not shucked, it was still attacked to the shell. I turned to the table next to me since I saw they had ordered oysters and I asked if theirs were shucked, and they said some were and some weren't. Oh goodness, so inconsistent. Then they also warned me that they got charged regular pricing instead of happy hour pricing. Also they didn't give me any utensils... so I had to go grab a plastic fork myself cause no staff was in sight and I had to scrap these oysters off their shells. First one not good. Second one, I drowned it in marinara sauce, still not good. Third one... SO BAD I SPLIT IT OUT... Fourth one, ALSO BAD. Okay I don't want to get sit... I'm over this... I just set it aside and covered it with one napkin to indicate I'm over it. Honestly they can see there were many untouched if they wanted to ask me how I liked them. Maybe I should have left but I made the mistake of ordering more food. I ordered a Raspberry Iced Tea ($3.75). Can't really mess that up but I want to point out that no refills were offered my whole time there. I did their Build Your Own with 1lb Shrimp ($17.75), 1lb Crawfish ($11 when added on to an order), with the Make it Awesome ($5.75) which is 1 corn, 2 potatoes, 3 sausages all in their Garlic Butter Mild. Okay... garlic... butter... can't go wrong right?? Well I'm wrong wrong wrong. I don't know HOW they managed to serve me the blandest cajun meal of my life. I am beyond baffled. I see the garlic. The color looks like butter. Definitely not mild, more like zero spice and zero seasonings. Even the limes they gave were dried out and bitter. My theory on the bland garlic was that it was prepped and frozen for so long it lost its' flavor. The seafood itself didn't taste fresh either. Bleh. It really needed a better sauce to mask the musky taste. Oh and the sausage was BURNT. Sigh. I think service tried to be nice. They did come and ask if I needed anything else. But honestly I didn't even want the food in front of me, let alone anything else. At the end they provided complimentary dessert to every guest. It was like a deep fried oreo with a scoop of ice cream on the day I went. The dessert was good. Just nothing else. Oh wait for it... when I got the check, I was also overcharged for the oysters, ringing up at $33 instead of the $1.50/oyster HH price being $15. The waitress was surprised and she even expressed how that happened to another customer (I know) previously and she had asked "him", who I assume is a manager or boss, to fix it in the system. Sigh... Apparently he didn't. The portions were fair, the pricing is fair... WHEN THEY RING YOU UP CORRECTLY. it just tastes bad. Low production quality. Maybe they are able to keep these prices by buying low quality product. Regardless I DEFINITELY won't be coming back. This meal, or rather the stuff that was edible, is not worth the calories. I rarely give 1 star reviews but I almost considered it... but no one was mean and I didn't get sick (because I spit up the bad oysters and stopped eating them). This is such a generous 2 stars review for the mess I had to deal with.

You could tell when you peel the shrimp that it's definitely frozen and mealy and $18 for 4pc of frozen shrimp is wild. I love fusion when it's done well, some of their dishes are creative, but it's quite disappointing to see simple Chinese classic charged ridiculously high for a little portion just because they are trying to be "high end." $16 for popcorn chicken, you can get the same amount and better at a boba place for less. We wanted to try the fish collar: not available, clams: not available. Really wanted to love this place, but hopefully things change cause it really is a stunning restaurant. Today was a day that worked for me, so we decided to have lunch together and then get a massage afterward. Whenever I come to this area for a massage, I usually have lunch at Boston Lobster. I've heard that Boston Lobster was opened by a chef and some of the staff who used to work here at Newport Seafood Restaurant, so I wanted to come back here after a long time and compare the two restaurants for myself. First, parking. Boston Lobster has regular self-parking, while Newport Seafood has valet parking, which was $2. As for the food, I ordered one of my favorite dishes, shrimp with cashews. I've had it at Boston Lobster many times, and I definitely preferred Boston Lobster's version. We also ordered beef with tomato sauce. Honestly, it didn't look particularly appetizing when it first came out, but once I tried it, it was actually pretty good. We also ordered beef chow mein, and this was probably my favorite dish of the meal. It almost had a slightly Thai-food-like flavor, and it was really delicious. As for the service, this is where I noticed the biggest difference between the two restaurants. Every time I go to Boston Lobster, everyone there is always extremely friendly and welcoming. Here, some of the staff were friendly, but some were not friendly at all. The hostess who greeted us when we first arrived was very nice. After we sat down, she brought a small cucumber dish to our table and asked if we wanted it as an appetizer. We politely declined. Then a male server came to take our drink order and asked whether we wanted hot tea or water. I asked if they had any caffeine-free hot tea, but he didn't seem to understand me. My friend repeated the question very slowly, but he still didn't seem to understand. After we explained it one more time, he finally seemed to get what I was asking and asked if I wanted jasmine tea. I said yes, so we had jasmine tea. It was extremely hot at first, so I also asked for some cold water without ice. Later, while we were eating, we needed to serve ourselves some of the chow mein. The spoon that came with the chow mein wasn't really useful for picking up the noodles, so I asked for an extra pair of chopsticks. The server brought the chopsticks over and basically tossed them down on our table. Honestly, I found that pretty unpleasant. My friend and I looked at each other while we were eating and said, "What was that?" My friend even commented, "Chinese restaurant staff can be so unfriendly sometimes." That has never happened to me at Boston Lobster. The staff there have always been very friendly and attentive whenever I've gone. I had actually been to Newport Seafood Restaurant several times before the COVID pandemic, and I even got their lobster for takeout back then. I remember it being so delicious that, during the pandemic, I once saw on Google that the restaurant was open and drove all the way here, only to find that it was actually closed. I remember being pretty disappointed that day. So coming back here again after such a long time brought back some memories. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with the service today. On the positive side, I found the restroom here to be cleaner than the one at Boston Lobster. However, the toilet here flushes automatically rather than having a manual flush, and I actually found that a little inconvenient. One nice advantage here is that they have private rooms, which would be great if you come with a larger group and want to sit separately with your own party. They do have lunch specials on weekends, which is nice. But personally, I think I'll probably go back to Boston Lobster next time. Their prices are actually about $1-$2 cheaper, I prefer their food overall, there's no valet parking charge, and most importantly, their service has been consistently much friendlier in my experience. So while I enjoyed coming back to Newport Seafood Restaurant after all these years and I did find some dishes here very good, Boston Lobster is still the place I would personally choose for my next visit to this area.

NOTE: I was planning on completing this review two weeks ago, but with radio shows, surf contests, and also the recent murders in Isla Vista, I have been "a little busy." Man, I lead "A Rough Life." After five straight surf contest-related days at Newport Beach, I decided to take a break, before doing it again at another beach, starting Wednesday (May 14, 2014). After "Drooling - Over" some "Smoking-Hawt Latina News Reporter" from Telemundo, who was covering the "Sirracha Hot Sauce Controversy," at the Huy Fong Foods, Incorporated Headquarters, in Irwindale, California, I went "Slumming - In - Beverly Hills," at one of "My Hide - Outs (Will Rogers Memorial Park)." However, before heading-over to Beverly Hills, my tapeworm woke-up, so I stopped-by a seafood restaurant ("Shrimp House"), in Arcadia. This restaurant relocated from the first El Monte location to Arcadia a few years ago. Back then, it was "Shrimp Ahoy." As Someone who has fought Corporate Fascism for much of my life, it was refreshing to find A Family-Owned Seafood Restaurant. I "pigged-out" on a grilled seafood combination, consisting of fish, shrimp, and scallops, accompanied with French fries, washed-down by Coca Cola. They also make some "Killa Potato Chips," which I took for-the-road. Sadly, much of "Old Arcadia" is long-gone. In fact, directly across-the-street are homes, where there used to be a drive-in theater. Fortunately whether called "Shrimp Ahoy" or called "Shrimp House," th seafood at this eatery is worth-the-stop. I recently had the pleasure of dining at the "Shrimp House" on Good Friday afternoon. Upon arriving, I quickly scanned the lunch specials and ordered two pieces of their famous fried fish, accompanied by sides of creamy white clam chowder and perfectly steamed rice pilaf. To quench my thirst, I also ordered a refreshing iced tea. Despite the restaurant being packed with patrons, the service was prompt and friendly, which made my dining experience even more enjoyable. As my clam chowder was served, the aroma of the steaming hot soup tantalized my senses. I eagerly took my first spoonful and was immediately transported to culinary heaven. The soup was prepared with generous cuts of fresh clams and potatoes, and the creamy broth was just the right consistency. I savored every spoonful of this delectable soup and couldn't help but express my pleasure to the server. Then came the star of the show - the fried fish. Two pieces of golden yellow crispy crust enveloped the hot and flaky white fish. I requested hot mustard and cocktail sauce to complement the fish, and the server even provided me with a small bowl to mix my sauces. As I took my first bite, the crispiness of the crust gave way to the succulent and juicy fish. I dipped it in my sauce mixture, and the explosion of flavors in my mouth was pure bliss. This dish was simply heaven on a plate. I have been a loyal patron of the "Shrimp House" for over 40 years, and I always stick to my favorites, which never disappoint. However, the restaurant offers a variety of great options on their menu for those who want to try something new. Enjoyed lunch at shrimp house :- The most yummy sea food I had here in my whole life. I heard so many things about this place like it is having amazing food, best ambience and blah blah blah. I wanted to go and have their food and one day I and my best friend finally decided to go and enjoy their food. They gave so many choices in sea food. We went there on Thursday night around 9 o'clock. It was a regular day so we did not found so many crowds here. The place was quite empty so we were able to enjoy the ambience in its calmness. They were having waiter service. We ordered our dishes like shrimp scampi, surf and turf and rice pilaf. They serve beer and wine two. We ordered two beers too. I and my fried found damn delicious flavors in our dishes. I really believe that the people who are saying on yelp that shrimp house is not so good place then I would like to say that they must be not tasted the food served by this place yet! read more

Love this place. Firstly, the owner is great, nick I think his name is. When I came in for lunch, he greeted me with enthusiasm. I ordered a quick clam chowder and a shrimp sandwich. The chowder was traditional New England with thick chunks of clam. I jazzed it up with a touch of tobasco. The shrimp sandwich had large pieces of butterflied shrimp lightly fried. I work near by and i always pass by this place and finally decided to give it a try. After reading several reviews on yelp i wanted to give the lobster mac and cheese a try. It was not what i was expecting at all i was very disappointed. It was way too oily and my noodles were cold when i got them. Not only that the restaurant has a very funky smell so needless to say i didnt stay very long. Bottom line i dont think ill be back. read more

We ordered the new england and manhattan chowders, breaded fried fish, fried scallops, large fried shrimp, shrimp salad, steak, steamed vegetables, cole slaw and home made potato chips. I drove by and saw this restaurant. And I decided to have a try. I have to say that the pasta is really good, atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, too. Only one improvement, the calm chowder is a little bit too salty. Highly recommend and I will definitely go again. read more

I was already in the area and when it was time for dinner I was walking around to see what looked good. I was so excited to see Stinkin Crawfish. It was weird though because I went to the restroom to wash my hands, and when I came back, they gave another group the table they gave me. I picked a different table, but I thought that was odd. After a quick glance at their menu I saw that they had Happy Hour is Monday to Friday from 4 to 6:30pm. It was a bit pass 6pm so I put in a Dozen Oysters (HH $15 | regular $33) while I looked at the rest of the menu. Ugh regret. These were SO BAD!! First off, the majority was not shucked, it was still attacked to the shell. I turned to the table next to me since I saw they had ordered oysters and I asked if theirs were shucked, and they said some were and some weren't. Oh goodness, so inconsistent. Then they also warned me that they got charged regular pricing instead of happy hour pricing. Also they didn't give me any utensils... so I had to go grab a plastic fork myself cause no staff was in sight and I had to scrap these oysters off their shells. First one not good. Second one, I drowned it in marinara sauce, still not good. Third one... SO BAD I SPLIT IT OUT... Fourth one, ALSO BAD. Okay I don't want to get sit... I'm over this... I just set it aside and covered it with one napkin to indicate I'm over it. Honestly they can see there were many untouched if they wanted to ask me how I liked them. Maybe I should have left but I made the mistake of ordering more food. I ordered a Raspberry Iced Tea ($3.75). Can't really mess that up but I want to point out that no refills were offered my whole time there. I did their Build Your Own with 1lb Shrimp ($17.75), 1lb Crawfish ($11 when added on to an order), with the Make it Awesome ($5.75) which is 1 corn, 2 potatoes, 3 sausages all in their Garlic Butter Mild. Okay... garlic... butter... can't go wrong right?? Well I'm wrong wrong wrong. I don't know HOW they managed to serve me the blandest cajun meal of my life. I am beyond baffled. I see the garlic. The color looks like butter. Definitely not mild, more like zero spice and zero seasonings. Even the limes they gave were dried out and bitter. My theory on the bland garlic was that it was prepped and frozen for so long it lost its' flavor. The seafood itself didn't taste fresh either. Bleh. It really needed a better sauce to mask the musky taste. Oh and the sausage was BURNT. Sigh. I think service tried to be nice. They did come and ask if I needed anything else. But honestly I didn't even want the food in front of me, let alone anything else. At the end they provided complimentary dessert to every guest. It was like a deep fried oreo with a scoop of ice cream on the day I went. The dessert was good. Just nothing else. Oh wait for it... when I got the check, I was also overcharged for the oysters, ringing up at $33 instead of the $1.50/oyster HH price being $15. The waitress was surprised and she even expressed how that happened to another customer (I know) previously and she had asked "him", who I assume is a manager or boss, to fix it in the system. Sigh... Apparently he didn't. The portions were fair, the pricing is fair... WHEN THEY RING YOU UP CORRECTLY. it just tastes bad. Low production quality. Maybe they are able to keep these prices by buying low quality product. Regardless I DEFINITELY won't be coming back. This meal, or rather the stuff that was edible, is not worth the calories. I rarely give 1 star reviews but I almost considered it... but no one was mean and I didn't get sick (because I spit up the bad oysters and stopped eating them). This is such a generous 2 stars review for the mess I had to deal with.

The owner/chef Patty is the sweetest and asked what it was we were in the made for. I was eyeing the nopales and huevo then she said she was making costillitas with nopal and she sold me. The salsa verde was perfect. Some places rush salsa verde and it tastes too citrusy. This had the right amount of sazón. My son had chilaquiles which were also delicious, not a fan of restaurant ones because I make them myself at home and nothing compares however hers were tasty if I was in the mood I would order them from here. I know where to go if I want Mexican comfort food now. Since my mom passed away (greatest cook who ever lived) it's hard finding something that reminds of you home. I tried the dark meat chicken pot pie with gravy, apple pie, mixed berry pie, and a side of salad. The pies were amazing, portioned well, and very flaky. The salad was surprisingly delicious, topped with beans and paired with an addicting ranch dressing. It was all priced reasonably in my opinion. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Moffett's. I'd recommend for others to try their pies as well.
