I was staying nearby and Yelp brought me here. Parking in the big parking lot in back, I walked in the front door and was promptly seated. It was about 7:30 in the evening on a weekday night last week. The menu here is quite large with many seafood options along with some non seafood ones too. I ordered the Captain Paul's Deluxe platter for $14.49. It came with a cup of clam chowder, shrimp salad, two large shrimp, one fish fillet, 3 scallops and a side of my choice which was their red beans and rice. The chowder was a 4.5, the large shrimp salad a 4, the fried shrimp and fish were a 4, the scallops a 4.5 and the red beans a 4 with a nice smoky flavor. Also my table service was warm and friendly (4). With my drink and tax the bill came out to be about $19. It was a lot of food and very good too. This is a very good place to come eat in a relaxed and casual atmosphere that also provides good value. read more

All I can say is wow!! My Dad and his wife have been raving about this place for years! My husband and I finally drove from south Orange County to check it out. The restaurant is old but really well maintained. Now as far as the food goes.....fantastic!!! We tried both clam chowders....coconut shrimp and fried scallops....Dad and his wife always get the Galley special...fried white fish and shrimp. EVERYTHING was fantastic...the Manhattan clam chowder had a little kick to it.....the Boston chowder was just yummy....coconut shrimp rivaled some that we get in Hawaii, great sauce......the fish and chips are perfectly breaded!! Our waiter was so friendly and helpful, made us feel right at home. What a charming little restaurant! We will definitely make the hour+ drive again to try other things on the menu!!! You don't have to drive down to the beach area to get the same atmosphere and food as what the Shrimp House/Shrimp Ahoy offers. Once you pull into its parking lot already nautical themed with the wood pillars, rustic chains, etc.....it feels like you are at a beach area diner...except if you look too far and see Peck Road and the fwy nearby... This place has also been here for years and is an institution in the area. Not much around here as it borders the triangle of El Monte, Arcadia and Monrovia. From the friendly greeting you get to the painted seagulls on the ceiling this is a fun place for families, couples, singles (counter seating available) and groups. Lots of fun stuff on the walls transporting you to the beach area. My son loves the large swordfish on the wall and I'm sure other kids would love it too. Your standard fare of the fried seafood with their own gritty batter which differentiates them from the other fried seafood houses. Good Coleslaw, tartar and shrimp sauce in a squeeze bottle on the table (as we all love that shrimp cocktail sauce!). But what make this different from the beach community diners is its pricing and its super friendly neighbor small town service. The service staff many of whom have been here for years are probably one of the most wonderful service experiences you can get. But sometimes when it is busy (especially during lent and on weekends) - be patient as the food may take a while but the servers still smile and check up on your table refilling drinks, etc. (get a starter of the fried zucchini in the same fried fish batter to hold you over). From Captain Specials to their own daily specials (surf & turf, seafood pasta, etc.) - this place has it all! I still can't decide which is better - the fish or the shrimp! If you new to this go for Captain Paul's Deluxe....a good combo of different items with soup and salad to start. Ask for a half and half clam chowder to start! Yum! The kid's plates here are awesome! And this place has probably one of the most challenging kid's menu activities to boot! (hey if it makes the kids think more power!). The house specials are also great to share (if you are willing to). Great clam chowder and shrimp Louie salad. Good fried Oysters as well. Ask for plenty of tartar. They even have crab & lobster at market prices in your are not a fried food lover. Plus steaks and even grilled chicken. All good. Great lunch menu M-Sat 11-2:30pm with an assortment of under $9 plates which are plenty to fill your belly! All come with two sides of your choice! Then there are the desserts...which I can never find room for since I like to start with the zucchini or shrimp cocktail...but they have cheesecakes, red velvet, carrot cake, rice pudding and a very very good Homemade bread pudding. Two cool things about this place is also their selection of beers and wine by the glass. Oyster Bay which is a New Zealand wine is a great Chardonnay and hard to find! But cheap here and compliments most of the menu very well!!! Second cool thing is their take out window located on the side of the building that allows you to order to go with a small waiting area outside and some take out parking in front. Keep in mind this is a beach type diner....not an upscale seafood restaurant. It is family orientated. I see some reviews where people knock the food quality as they compare it to upscale seafood places....the expectations need to be beach diner food. Something you would find on a pier....or roadside off PCH.....The addition that separates it from the beach diners as it replaces the beach view with plenty of TVs to catch a Laker or Dodger game on. Plus the kids can count the seagulls on the ceiling! 4 Stars on Food, 5 Stars on Service, 5 Stars on Staying Power and keeping a tradition alive in the area...(and saving us gas to drive down to the beach for this type of grub for us landlubbers)...... BTW -waitress with the dimples! Keep smiling! Even when your "in it" (restaurant term for servers) with the heavy lent business yesterday - you kept smiling all the way! 3.5 STARS SERVICE Our waitress was super nice but she did mess up a couple of things but was always quick to fix them and was generally pretty on top of things. It is a very local joint, and we came with a Groupon and they were more than happy to serve us. As we were leaving, they were all very warm and friendly-- not just to us but everyone. That's what's awesome about this place. FOOD Captain Paul's Deluxe: Red/Manhattan Clam Chowder didn't have too many clams and had more potatoes, but it did taste really good. Shrimp salad is a pass for me and we tried the champagne vinaigrette, which was not that good. Stick to the basics next time, people! Fish filet was very meh and hard-- definitely not impressive. Maybe I needed to get Alaskan/tender? Large shrimp was good, but Jumbo is definitely better. In the case of shrimp, bigger is better. Scallops were excellent-- the breading fell apart really easily though because it was a bit watery, but the scallops themselves were cooked perfectly with that nice soft flesh. We also shared fries, which were pretty good and thick-cut! Jumbo Shrimp: Delish! Breading is crispy and a bit hard. We got the rice pilaf, which was a bit salty, but really excellent and hit the spot! Coleslaw is not too much dressing and not that salty, which balanced everything out nicely. The fried items were not as greasy as I expected. I actually didn't feel like it was heavy in my stomach and gross. All this food filled two Asian girls up pretty well without being too much or too less! ATMOSPHERE Dim, a bit sticky, a missing lid for malt vinegar here, some empty beer bottles there... It's mostly locals and older folk enjoying some seafood. An old diner feel with a fairly clean restroom area! I'd probably come back to try more of their seafood selections and just to have a chill dinner with my friend. This place has lost its touch sadly. I know others won't care because this restaurant is a staple in the community and people will love it because so. Our family's experience hasn't gotten better in the past year. Our orders have always been missing items or just plain incorrect. This has been happening before Covid-19 (so there's no excuse there). The sad part is they have a sign that says that it's not their fault if the order is incorrect if you leave the store. Basically putting the blame on the customer for their own mistakes. The only pro is if you explain the problem over the phone and drive all the way back, they will give you the item, so long as you wait and pay of course. They don't do anything extra to satisfy you, the customer, for their own mistakes as you have to drive back and waste time&gas for their own mistakes. I think it's time I find another shrimp restaurant. P.S- I will say that the employees are still nice though and the food was still good. I like that! read more

Me and my boyfriend came here craving shrimp and they absolutely SERVED!!! We ordered 8 coconut shrimp (coconut batter & panko breading) and they were delicious and a good size!! We shared between the both of us. It also comes with two sides when you order the shrimps, there's a lot of different options, we got rice & fries, only thing is the serving for fries is definitely a lot smaller than other places.. but besides that, food was so good! Don't get us started on their ketchup... it was . We also ordered clam chowder BREAD bowl, and it was soooo good, the bread was fresh and soft. Definitely worth my money!!! This place is a trip! If you didn't know better sitting inside this restaurant gives you the feeling your in downtown San Diego off of the beach, you'd never guess your on the border of Arcadia haha. Service here is always good, waiters/waitress' are always thorough, food comes out pretty fast & their pricing is decent for seafood, again it's not the best seafood you'll ever have so it equals out. My favorite thing to get here is their small shrimp salad, plenty of cold shrimp with a great seafood Louie dressing. Their fried shrimp/fish options are also not bad- pretty greasy but it has a decent batter on it so I'd recommend it over some of their grilled fish I've tried in the past. read more

Early Sunday evening, this place is packed and looks like a family restaurant that you want to come year after year. The menu is easy to read but hard to pick, because everything looks delish these! We end up getting the Captain combo dinner set; so we don't have to pick :) The combo $14 come with 1 cup of Clam chowder, shrimp salad, 3 jumbo shrimp, 3 jumbo scallop and fried fish, Plus 1 choice of side. BF likes the New England chowder, I got the MD style and like it too. a lot of clam in the soup and just that cup of soup already filled us up. The fried shrimp is just prefect, not too much breading, not that deep fried. Scallop is also tasty, I have not had this yummy fried seafood for a while. I saw the Desert tray passing by but have no room for it, the portion is way too big for me, next time, I have to share the entree so I can try the home made cakes. Went for the first time last Monday May 13 2022. Loved everything. Maria our server was fantastic. All of the food was fresh and delicious. Loved the baby shrimp salad and the clam chowder. My wife ordered the shrimp skewers and they were also fresh and tasty. Prices were very fair and I would recommend the restaurant to all. I am going back tomorrow for some more. We saw this place close to our dropyard and we can for a bobtail truck in rear corner!! Lucky us today. Shortly after 11 on sat before New Years. We ordered two apps to share- ceviche & fried calamari. Yummmm needed more of that! Our waitress was great and didn't put our food order in we were done eating apps as per our request. We drove past the Shrimp House for years, this weekend we were very hungry and pulled in. The prices were really good and the portions we're good. The fish, shrimp and scallops were all absolutely fresh and delicious. This is really a 4.5. Love this place. I have been a shrimp lover since birth and their fried shrimp is PERFECT. Please don't ever change them. The scallops are really good too, but my heart belongs to those giant shrimps. The decor is clean and retro cool. Not fancy, but original. There are familiar staff that have been there for years which adds to the whole vibe. My parents brought us here as small kids and now I bring my children and grandchildren here when we're out this way and what a treat, really special. The only thing (oh, oh), i have to mention is the clam chowder used to have a lot more clam flavor in the broth. I mean I craved the stuff, but it's now more floury and bland. I don't usually order it anymore, but test once in a while. Fix that and they get 5 full stars. I hadn't been here in several years for some reason. Decided to go for early dinner on Wednesday 2-10-2021. Glad to see the menu was the same. Due to covid, had to eat outside but they have done a good job with their tent. Wife and I both had shrimp and piece of fish. Both were large pieces and tasted as I remembered. Food was served fast and hot. Sides were great especially the red beans and rice. Our server Laura took good care of us even though she was dealing with another difficult customer. My son brought me here last year. So for starters we had cocktails but not what you think lololol I ordered snow crab cocktail at first I thought it was a strawberry ice cream lololol, she had the shrimp cocktail and both were bomb. For dinner I ordered fried shrimp and steak with vegetables and she ordered shrimp luguine with a clam chowder cup. The Shrimp House is an unassuming and friendly little joint where you'll see lots of dining locals and cops, always good indicators. TVs are on with no volume and the experience is warm and no-frills. Shrimp House does most everything well but specializes in fried shrimp, so get those. The jumbos are the largest shrimp I've ever seen and I'm told they are imported fresh and daily from Mexico. Breading is tasty and not overwrought and (yay!) not too salty. Create a dip using the shrimp sauce and hot mustard that's at every table and settle in for gustatory happiness. For those of us losing weight, go for the jumbo fried shrimp (with the highest meat-to-fried ratio) which are huge - 4 make a great meal. Have a few fries, iced tea, and the cole slaw and you're only having 800 calories or so and going home satisfied. I'd love to have a shrimp-off between this place and my favorite restaurant, Pappas Seafood in Houston, TX, or the best overall shrimp restaurant, JL Trent's in Jacksonville, FL. There'd be no loser in any case. So if you find yourself in the northern Los Angeles area, make this one a destination. read more
