Yum, Yum. If you want seafood variety, you have got to try Shrimp House in Arcadia, formerly Shrimp Ahoy. There were so many choices in this family style restaurant, my husband could not make up his mind. Thank goodness, our charming, patient waitress, Darlene, took it in stride....but, she is a pro after working for the business 22 years. I enjoyed a glass of wine as he decided. At last, he ordered. Known for their shrimp, he tried every type on the menu with scallops. I tried the freshly made sauces which were perfect. No complaints here! Come with an appitite, the portions are huge. I swear my grilled salmon was enough for two people, but, hey, I am looking forward to lunch tomorrow. The Manhattan (red) chowder was good, but, my favorite was the Boston Clam Chowder, loaded with clams, thick, yet creamy. Maybe next time I will try the Four Cheese Lobster Mac and Cheese listed under starters. By the way, it's eat in or take out.....your choice. This place was amazing! Sent my boyfriend's parents there the night after we went! We had a restaurant.com gift card and decided to try it out because it was Friday during Lent (can't eat meat, fish is OK). Our food was delicious, the atmosphere was great, and there were so many good options to choose from. I got shrimp scampi which were delicious, buttery and garlicy and they definitely gave you enough of them. My boyfriend got jumbo shrimp which he loved. We read reviews of too much breading, and he is picky about breading so I warned him ahead of time but he loved it and didn't think it was too much. We also split the calamari appetizer which was good, not the best I've ever had but I would definitely eat it again. We worried that it would be sketchy / in a bad part of town, or that the food wouldn't be good, but were so glad that we gave it a chance. The atmosphere was kitschy, boat-themed, but so friendly and welcoming. Our waitress made us feel like we were part of the family. The restaurant was packed when we got there too, but our ten minute wait was like nothing, and they may have called us early. Anyways, I would highly recommend this place to anyone. I really wanted to like this place, but it just isn't that good. Like other Yelpers have written, the batter is heavy, so heavy in fact you don't really taste the shrimp. Four stars just for the decor. Although I would not want my house looking anything REMOTELY like this restaurant, I can appreciate it and laugh at it/with it because it is trying to be something. Well, it's trying to be everything, from the Elvis Presley memorabilia to the nautical knick knacks/Hawaiian souvenirs that tourists would buy to the random ukulele hanging on the wall. Very bright and gaudy and perhaps unnecessary, which was why I just couldn't take my eyes off the walls while I was eating my fried cod fish. I liked their tartar sauce, even though the fish, to me, was good enough without it. The server was nice enough to bring an armful upon request. And their fries tasted like they were homemade, a big plus for me. None of those measley fast food kinds, either. I can't comment much on the food, because it's the usual neighborhood dive for fried seafood, a place where you lay aside your Atkins and South Beach diet books for REAL food. After all, the heart is a forgiving organ, right? It can get crowded, and after tasting their cod fish, you can see why. Definitely not for the health conscious, but for good fried fish that aren't soaked with grease, this is the place to go. I might just come back just for the Coconut Shrimp alone! My experience at your restaurant was over a year ago. Although I don't remember details of what was wrong with the food, I do recall it not meeting my expectations. I vaguely remember that the Chipotle shrimp and pilaf rice tasted bland. The Chipotle sauce was slapped over the shrimp and did not look appetizing. While some guests might call a server to their table and point out that their food isn't to their liking, you have to understand that that is a personal choice. When I dine out, which I often do, I go to a restaurant expecting great food and service. I'm always a fan of family owned restaurants. :) I came here on a Saturday afternoon (around 2pm), so there was no wait. You seat yourself wherever and there should be menus on the table. The service was wonderful! The waitresses are all really friendly, sweet, and helpful. My boyfriend and I ordered the Golden Fried Zucchini (small size) and omg, it was delicious ! We also ordered the Grilled Shrimp and Scallop plate with Cole Slaw and Rice Pilaf, which was yum, but they are known for their breaded shrimp sooo we ordered 2 large shrimp and 2 jumbo shrimp (as add-on items). There's a lot of meat in both, but especially the jumbo shrimp, so good !! *I found the breaded shrimp to be perfect with a combination of the hot sauce and cocktail sauce. I ended up here randomly, the fianceé's father had been coming here for years so he wanted to share his love for this place. So lets dive into this one shall we. This is a little place tucked away on a corner right off the road. I do have to say I am a sucker for uniquely themed and interestingly decorated restaurants. They use the whole nautical theme very well. The white and blue stripped walls with naval pictures and antiques sprawled out amongst the seating areas. The food of course is all appropriately themed as well. Fish fish and more fish. I do not go to too many fish places (minus sushi), so I will be honest that I can not critique it to the fullest potential. We were not incredibly hungry so my fianceé and I ordered a few appetizers. We went for the shrimp ceviche, generously priced at $3.99, and a seafood classic calamari. The ceviche is honestly not that appetizing to look at. It looked like raw fish flopped onto a tostada shell. Knowing that it was going to taste better than it looked I dug in. There is a chewy texture that is a little off putting but manageable. It does have a nice citrusy taste and the shrimp is not masked by the seasoning. Ceviche I have had before has been about half fish and half salsa, this one however is about 70% shrimp and 30% salsa. I would like to have more salsa but the abundance of shrimp assures me that I am getting my money's worth. I enjoyed it, and especially at that price. Now calamari i am a bit more familiar with, i have had really good and really bad. I would have to say this falls in just above the middle of the road. A good sized basket of crispy well cooked squid with a tartar and cocktail sauce for dipping, really can not go wrong. The squid was crispy yet still soft in the center so that it did not lose that tasty texture. Not overly greasy, and a good amount for maybe two to share as an appetizer. I feel that there is a lot of history to this place. It feels like one of those little places you find off the side of the road that has been around forever with many regulars. The only difference is that everything has been built up around it and this place still stands. I would suggest going to this place to enjoy the unique decor, and have a solid seafood meal. I just don't see all the buzz surrounding this restaurant. I was expected to be blown away by their fried seafood (because of all the 5 stars) and yet I was minimally disappointed. While their friend shrimp, fish, scallops, and oysters weren't bad, it's nothing to write home about. The batter is nice and crunchy, but for some reason it wasn't hot! It's like they left it in front of the air condition for a minute or two. They have homely, friendly service so that is a plus. And they have Shock Top Beer on top for 4 dollars a pint (nice!). But still, I expected a LOT more. A $40 dinner for two, including one beer and one diet coke, tax and tip, just didn't live up to my expectations. Still, it's not bad. 2nd visit and regretfully, it wasn't as good as my first visit. Food slightly overcooked and/or seafood not at its peak freshness. Let's get this straight...I'm not saying it was frozen or not fresh...just not at its peak freshness. The serving size was slightly smaller and it was bland. For anyone who wants to say this is pre-packaged seafood and they fry it, it definitely is not. 1) It's not a beer batter, 2) It's not a panko breading, 3) It's not the crunchy breading you get out of a Van de Kamp's box or Gorton's. This is my first clue it is NOT pre-packaged frozen food. Secondly, the breading is consistent between the shrimp, fish, and scallops. It tastes like a flour/cornmeal type breading. It's not greasy like the frozen pre-packaged stuff. If anyone is expecting the Shrimp Scampi Linguine to resemble shrimp scampi that is cooked in butter and garlic, this one is not. This version is made with what appeared to be sun-dried tomatoes and lots of garlic. A family member ate it and has leftovers, so looks like I'll find out what it tastes like tomorrow. It smelled really heavy on garlic and italian seasoning and was pretty oily on the bottom of the plate. I am guessing the sundried tomatoes come canned or jarred with olive oil? I'd come back again, though. Next time, it'll be 2 out of 3...wonder which way I'll sway... Oh I forgot to mention...the wait staff is really nice! No issues with customer service at all. I was considering dropping my rating down to 3 stars, but I'm giving Shrimp House the benefit of the doubt..maybe tonight was just a bad night. Ok so we ordered 4 large shrimp lunch special with 2 sides I got fries and red bed and rice my son ordered the double cheeseburger with fries. Our food came fairly quickly burger was amazing (we split our food) nice and juicy and fresh, rice and beans had a bit of a spicy kick to it really enjoyed it. This place is so fun! I went because it looked cute and I was craving some seafood and it ended up being well above my expectations. The place is really cute inside and while it is kind of like a diner it has adorable touches and is very comfortable. I ended up getting a sampler platter and as someone who doesn't eat fried food often this was not greasy or soggy it was crispy and wonderful. The staff was kind and everything reasonably priced. Ever since I moved to the area I'd been wanting to try this place. How could you go wrong with a house of shrimp?! Turns out, very very wrong. I ordered the Krabby Cakes (spelling Crab with a K doesn't help the image). They were thin, breaded mush. By the taste, you couldn't tell they were crab (which they may not have been made of). Their perfect shape alluded to them using bought frozen cakes. I ordered the Saturday special surf & turf. The steak looked good, but was extremely salty. The baby lobster seemed like another frozen dish, and was not only tough but oddly tasted like chicken. The golden fried shrimp tasted like crescent rolls, I'm guessing maybe bisquick? This place was just OK. The meal started off great with a couple appetizers but the meals themselves were just ok. I got the shrimp plate. The skewer shrimp did not taste fresh and were not that good, however the coconut shrimp was delicious. The fries tasted like they had been sitting out for a while unfortunately. The Manhattan clam chowder was also much thicker than I'm used to and not as desirable - much like a tomato based New England clam chowder.
