Just got back from dinner at the Shrimp House. This was my first visit and wasn't sure how I would like it after reading some.past reviews but because We are adventurous me and my husband decided to give it a try. I am glad we did. The food was delicious (maybe just a tad more seasoning on the shrimp but still oh so scrumptious) the service by Diane was spectacular. She should give lessons at other establishments! She was attentive without being intrusive. All the staff seemed like they actually liked working there which is so rare these days. For us this was an awesome outing and will be coming back soon! Might be the worst experience I've had since this entire Covid thing happened. If you're open for business right now, ESPECIALLY allowing people to come in and sit down, you BETTER have your shit together. We got here. Went inside to order, while waiting in line just looking at the menu. We were rudely asked to wait in line if we weren't ready, I looked at the girl and looked around and said, we're in line....so we ordered out food and went to wait outside. I will be reporting this location for lack of a Covid regulation. Not only did you not have ANYTHING on the floor to allow for social distancing guidance, but you continued to allow people to walk in and crowd the entry way. And then when you didn't have their order ready, you asked them to wait outside. Where's the tape or stickers for social distancing? Why weren't tour chefs wearing a face mask in addition to their face shield? Our waiters/waitresses, hosts/hostesses, and chefs in Santa Monica yesterday ALL had a mask on underneath their clear face shields. And the cherry on top? We waited for AN HOUR to find out that our food was not only under a different name, but it was also COLD AND SOGGY. So much for a nice Father's Day lunch. My dad hasn't seen his father in 5 years. wanted to take my dad out for lunch one friday and decided to go to shrimp house due to the 4 star review on yelp. i already knew en route there this probably wasn't the best decision. its in a near sketch area and is really easy to miss. we were told to sit wherever we wanted. we chose a booth - sticky seats! my dad ordered the shrimp salad and chowder combo and i had the shrimp and crab cake sandwich + a side of chowder for $1.99. the cup of chowder was uneventful, thick and creamy with the slightest hint of clams. my dad said he couldn't tell it was clam chowder, more reminiscent of congee..the shrimp salad was just an iceberg base with bottled dressing topped with a handful of bay shrimp. my "crab cake" sandwich was the biggest disappointment. im not sure how they can call that crab cake, i think i had 2 pieces of bread with breading and bits of shrimp inside (picture included). i ate it... cause i was starving... but it was not good... and it should just not be served, ever. the vegetables i chose as a side were clearly frozen and sprinkled with some salt and pepper. i don't understand why fresh veggies aren't served, so much better! the waitresses were really nice and the place seemed clean (2 stars) but i would never return. read more

I can only assume this place just went under new management, because I could have sworn that some time last year was still called Shrimp Ahoy. I've passed by this place too many a times always wondering how is it like in there? For all I know, they could have kept the name quite nautical and call it the "Pirate Shack," "Barnacle Bob's Seafood," "Walkin' the Plank." I walked in, and it looks like this place belonged near the ocean... in the 80's. Perhaps this place would have been the "worst comes to worst, if we can't get a reservation at Duke's or something." It reminds me of a seafood Sizzler, minus the salad bar. The decor was quite interesting with the painted seagulls, obscure collections of signs related to sea life. The crowd looks like it's your average usual's who enjoy seafood a.k.a. "The Over The Hill Crowd" because biting into a nice steak with dentures is no longer advisable. I was craving for a fish & chips deal. They didn't specifically have a "Fish and Chips" set-up but they did have a part in the menu with being able to order certain pieces of fish and order 2 sides (coleslaw and french fries). The food arrives at an appropriate time, not too long of a wait. So when I got the food it looked pretty fresh. The Shrimp Cocktail on the other hand did not really look appealing to eat. On top of the cocktail, I couldn't tell if it was shredded shrimp? or chewed up shrimp put on top, all I can say is that it look sloppy and cheesy with the typical 3 small packages of crackers and a slice of a lemon. The food was ok, It tasted fresh, looked kind of fresh, otherwise it was defrosted really well. I'd come back again to get a seafood fix, especially these next month or 2 because us Catholics need to handle the Lent season. read more

Came here for lunch. Got the merchants combo n Alaskan filet. Boy was this a mistake. The filet was tasteless n dry, to the point of rubber texture. The combo were disappointing as well. Too much of those tough tasteless breading! The signature jumbo shrimp? Its not that big at all and more importantly, it's really bland. I had to eat most of them w/ tons of tartar sauce.... Our first time here and we are definitely coming back! Our server Laura was super sweet and really helpful! She even let my fiancé sample the red chowder, which was way better than we expected. Excited to see the new re-model when they re-open on Thursday the 22nd! They already have great food at a fantastic value and the staff is excellent... Didn't think you could improve the dining experience at this San Gabriel Valley icon, but an interior makeover is always a good thing! I always drive past this place so today I stopped in for some food to go. I ordered the Fisherman's delight, I think that is what it's called. Hearty pieces of fish fried just right and the shrimp were huge! Red beans and rice had a nice smokey flavor, I would have liked a little more rice though. (Personal preference). My grandson ordered a steak with the shrimp scampi. Steak was cooked to his liking and the scampi shrimp were also really big. I had a groupon but was told the Groupon was for dine in only so I will be back to try something different. Good place to eat! read more

The food is always amazing at this place. I've eaten their clam chowder, fried catfish and the shrimp scampi linguini. All are AMAZING! The breading for the catfish is so light and the seasoning does not overpower. The shrimp scampi was great as well as the blackened shrimp was seasoned perfectly. Decided to try this place since I always drive by it going to work, and I definitely shouldn't have waited so long. The food was really great (I had the tuna sandwich with coleslaw) and my girlfriend had the popcorn shrimp with fries. I'm a sucker for clam chowder and had to get it. We ordered a burger and wings since we were about to be on the road for a while going back out of town and being in Cali I've had my share of fried fish. The burger..gross, frozen, bread soggy, no flavor and mistaken order. Wings were ok but literally just tossed in Louisiana hot sauce with no additions or variations... I could've made them at my house. Service- we sat at the table for 15 minutes between getting our drinks and food and there were a max of 5 tables with people at them already eating. I don't have high service expectations when I go to a place called "Shrimp Ahoy" anyway but c'mon, I would give a bum on the street more common courtesy than I got here. We ordered Manhattan clam chowder (red) and Boston clam chowder (white). Both were delicious with spices. Either was too salty. We enjoyed both chowders. The scallops in my scallop scampi was fresh and not overcooked. However, the scampi sauce was too oily. There's butter/oil poured onto the bread stick that came with it. I ordered green salad as one of my side dishes, the dressing was very oily as well. The flavors are there, I don't know why they need so much oil. At the end, it was cloying. My husband ordered The Captain Paul's Deluxe, which included a shrimp salad, which was very fresh. The fish filet, shrimp, and scallops on the deluxe entree were all fried. The scallops were good; the juice was retained inside the batter. The shrimp was a bit dry. The fish filet was a huge let down - it was bland. The service was great. They have their own parking. I live very close to here and drive past it everyday on the way to work. I have been wanting to come here for over 10 years since this place was known as Shrimp Ahoy. And finally today, I had the chance to go. The decor is charming and it's hard to resist all of the nautical trappings that lured me in. However, the batter they use is like a thick, cornbread-type batter. Not at all like beer batter or some of the lighter, crispier batters. The fish was tender and moist though and the scallops were very big and juicy. The shrimp were big too....BUT, everything was just ruined with the batter. And it wasn't like cornbread-batter like a Disneyland hot dog kind of chewy batter...it was a crumbly sort of thing. I was going to give this 2 stars but figured that some people perhaps really like that type of batter so I am giving it 3 stars. It was okay. Just okay. I went here with three friends and used a gift certificate purchased on restaurant.com. We live in Pasadena and there is no way we would have found this place or even considering going if there wasn't a deal. The venue itself has probably been around awhile but it also lends to a homey, comfortable feel. Overall the Shrimp House is good. Calamari appetizer was very tastey though is was a little small. Salads were nothing special but fresh and normal sized. The clam chowder was decent. I prefer mine thicker. Fried things were good as one would expect especially the tender scallops. Iced tea was a little expensive for a place like this but the wine was good. We didn't have room for desert. I agree with the thought that items could be more flavorful and could be more salty but they give you plenty of tarter sauce and coctail sauce to add. We will probably not go here again but only because of the location. Maybe if we had another gift certificate. read more

Its not that thin greasy stuff u get at fast good joints. This place is thick breaded and always tastes fresh... My only bone to pick would be sometimes there is a waitress whoever who sucks! This is my go place for fish and chips. Nice friendly atmosphere very clean, fast service. Today I give it 5 stars eventhough I ordered my regular galley special with a side of crabby cakes and when eating into my First piece of fish it tasted a bit odd. It was not like the many other times where it used to be very moist and flaky instead it was a bit dry and tough. The exceptional and very observant waitress (Itsel) noticed I put my fish to the side and was only eating my shrimp .she came over to my table and asked if everything was ok.i let her know about the fish she immediately exchanged it for another jumbo shrimp. Not crowded but it was past noon time. Rush may have just left already. Service: Very friendly and courteous. Refilled waters and sodas, etc. Very attentive and patient especially since we had multiple requests. Food: Had the chips ( very good ), Fish and Chips ( Not bad...again the bar is set pretty high due to Ye Olde King's Head ). I was too full from those damn chips to fully appreciate the fish though. But I do recall enjoying it. Grace had the Clam Chowder and said it was good. Price: Reasonable for seafood. I didn't pay but I recall the prices were fair for this kind of food. Verdict: Yes. Ahoy! This place is adorable inside and the food was very delicious! I was in the area for work today, when I asked my customer where she wanted to go she said let's go to Shrimp Ahoy as it literally was a few blocks from where we were. There was so many options on the menu, I thought everything would be fried but there were so many grilled options as well. The lunch specials are great, one main with 2 sides, there was 3 of us and we all had a lunch special and a soda and our bill was $41, not bad at all! I enjoyed the Grilled Alaskan Fillet and had double veggies, the other gal had the same as me but with a salad and our customer had the fried fish with a salad and they both loved the ranch dressing on the salad. Our server was nice and we were in and out in about 40 minutes. The decor inside is very cute and very sailor looking. I highly recommend this little spot in Monrovia! read more

Had dinner here last night. Mmmmm... Jumbo shrimp and rice pilaf always my favorite! They have the freshest salad and the creamiest salad dressing as well. I have been coming here since as long as I can remember... my parents love to eat here too. I recall as a kid my first "red" clam chowder experience here. I do believe the proper name is Manhattan.
