Shrimp vs Chef is one of those places you order from "just to try it" and then suddenly you're in a committed relationship with your delivery bag. I got the shrimp katsu and the shrimp po' boy, took it home, and ate it like it was a personal event. No music, no TV, just me and shrimp making eye contact. The shrimp katsu was ridiculous. Perfectly crispy, still hot by the time I got it on my plate, like it refused to get soggy out of sheer pride. Every bite was like, "Hey, your life might be a mess, but at least this is going right." I'm standing in my kitchen over the counter, half leaning, half praying this isn't the peak of my week. Then the shrimp po' boy... yeah, that thing is not "po'" anything. That sandwich walked into my house with main character energy. Big juicy shrimp overflowing out the sides, sauce everywhere, bread soft but somehow still holding it all together better than I am. It's the kind of sandwich you have to hunch over the sink for because you know you're about to make bad, saucy decisions. I told myself I'd eat half and save the rest for tomorrow. Had the pesto shrimp sandwich that was the best sandwich I have had in a long time. Great balance of flavors, ample amount of shrimp, and the roll was spectacular. We also had the shrimp tacos (grilled instead of tempura fried) which were also great in flavors and ample shrimp. We noticed a family sitting next to us that had a burrito that was ginormous & they too were commenting on the tastiness of the food. The chef is very friendly & attentive to all customers, and told us about his fish burrito--something for us to go back for in the near future. Parking is ample in front of the restaurant. The menu offerings are simple but diverse. There are burritos, tacos, and Asian noodles with tempura shrimp. There is also a tuna poke and vegetarian offerings of fried avocados in lieu of shrimp. I tried the tuna poke and I would give it 9 out of 10. The serving portion was generous, and the tuna felt fresh. The side portion of warm rice with tuna and avocado felt like a light but substantial meal. On my second visit, I tried the garlic noodle, and I would give it 6.5 out of 10. While I loved the fried shrimp, the noodles was too salty and I needed to wash it with water. The serving size was very generous, and it was enough to last two meals. The cost of entrees were around $16-$25. The ingredients felt fresh, and the entrees were all made to order. As for the service, patrons will order/pay at the counter, and the server will deliver the dishes to your table when ready. There was also a water station on the side. Tucked away in the Indiana Bones shopping center off TO Blvd, Shrimp vs Chef is a smaller location but has decent seating inside along with a couple of tables outside. I enjoyed the garlic noodle bowl which was packed with flavors and textures. I was able to try a shrimp taco that was a tasty mess. The lady had the large portioned Baja shrimp burrito. As hungry as I was, I got a couple of bite of that and had some order envy. The California shrimptruck burrito looks like a great option next time I come by. Man this place is special. What I love is how the menu is constantly tweaked so there is always something new and creative to try. Last night it was the shrimp and pork belly banh mi sandwich. I've had some good ones in my life, especially in San Francisco. But this one was great. Perfectly seasoned shrimp and crisp but juicy pork belly.
