Shuckin' Shack in Raleigh, North Carolina is one of those places that doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you step inside, it absolutely delivers. It's a smaller spot with a full bar, full kitchen, and a couple of chalkboards featuring specials, giving it that laid-back, local feel. I ate lunch here twice this week--Monday and Tuesday--and both experiences were phenomenal. I ordered the same thing both times, their seafood trio appetizer, and it was perfect each time. The trio comes with house-made crab dip, fried Gulf shrimp, and fried calamari, along with toast points (which I skipped staying low carb). Everything was cooked perfectly--crispy where it should be, tender where it matters--and the consistency between visits was spot on. They also serve a house-made Louie sauce with the dish that tied everything together nicely. It complemented the seafood well without overpowering it. The staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and service was smooth both visits. It's located in a shopping center, so parking is easy, even if you may have to walk a short distance. There's also outdoor patio seating, which appears like it could be dog-friendly, though that wasn't confirmed. For a place that specializes in seafood, this place is just sad. For the high price, I expected really good, fresh seafood. What we got were tiny, old looking oysters, water logged shrimp, and small dried out crab legs. I give them an extra star for the bartender who was nice. Seems like most people just come in for the cheap bottles of beer. And for good reason considering the quality of the food. Sadly I can't recommend this place, I don't see it surviving long unless they fix their issues. read more

Let's start with the end of the meal, charging me extra to use my credit card is ridiculous, I could see a minimum but this is a cost you have for doing business the fact that I am paying for it is the number one reason I won't be back. I asked for non alcoholic beverages and told we have the usual, ok. Then my hubs asks for bourbon and was told we have the usual... ok he asks for Buffalo trace and you don't have it. This was my first time here, and it was not disappointing. I love a girl oyster bar and Shuckin Shack met all my expectations. We ordered oysters on the half shell, grilled oysters, crab legs, and a cocktail called the crush! Oysters were fresh and oh so tasty, so good that we ordered an additional half dozen of each. The crab legs were ere steamed to perfection and the butter dipping sauce was perfect. The Crush was the perfect blend of fresh OJ and vodka. I believe I server was the owner but he was not pushy and offered recommendations on what he loved in the menu. This is truly an oyster bar in every sense of the word, and I loved it. Dropped in with a work colleague after a long day, and Shuckin' Shack was exactly the kind of place we needed. The vibe is casual and coastal, with friendly staff and a crowd of regulars who clearly know this is the spot. We each ordered the fried shrimp and fish basket--generous portions, perfectly crispy, and served hot. Washed it down with a couple of cold beers and had zero complaints. It's exactly the kind of no-fuss, satisfying meal you want after a long one. The staff were welcoming without being overbearing, and we appreciated how smoothly everything ran. Meanwhile, the locals were locked into whatever game was on TV, which just added to the laid-back, lived-in feel of the place. Great seafood, great service, and a great place to unwind. This place was terrible. First time and last time here. Our oysters were not shucked made to order but way before we arrived which explains why they were dry and they were muddy, as in the outer shell was coated in greenish black wet dirt that smeared on our fingertips. What's worse, every oyster had bits of shell inside the meat so we had to be careful ingesting them but after three oysters filled with small bits of broken shell that crunched in my mouth - I gave up and stopped eating. The dining room having gnats fly in your face was also annoying which is bad because that's a sign of an unclean kitchen. Our server, the bartender, never asked us how the food was after we were served and I personally think it's because he knew it wasn't good... Yeah we're not coming back. read more

We stopped by @ShuckinShack one evening for some grubs, and I will say we were not impressed. When we walked in we just stood in the entrance for a minute, and were never greeted. There was a pile of menus just laying there, so we just picked up a couple and picked an empty table. It was SEVERAL minutes before anybody acknowledged us. We ordered a couple of drinks, and the Hangover Fries to start as an appetizer. According to their menu, it is supposed to be, "Covered in queso, bacon, and green onion- topped with a fried egg. Served with a side of ranch and jalapenos." To be honest, I don't know what we were served, but I wouldn't call whatever was on top queso. It was clumpy, and not runny. I even looked at their Twitter page, and the "queso" isn't even the same. We didn't get the jalapenos on the side, or the ranch dressing, they just gave us ketchup. We mentioned it to the server that the "queso" didn't taste right, and we didn't like it, and she just responded that they make it in house. We ended scrapping whatever that stuff was off the fries. BTW, the fries were not hot. One entree was 1/2 lb Crab Legs & Small Wings. The crab legs were decent I will say. The wings were fried with a extra crusty breading on the outside, then coated with sauce. The chicken did taste alright, but they were not hot. They were served with melted butter on the side. The other entree we ordered was the Low Country Boil. They were heavily seasoned with Old Bay, which meant they had some seasoning on them. The sausage was good, and the shrimp was slightly overcooked, but not much. The corn was waaaayyyyy overcooked. It had a really gummy texture to it. Happy to report that the new seafood place in this part of town is mighty tasty! It is on Wake Forest Road in a new shopping plaza, on the way into downtown, not far from Snoopy's. Really close to Mami Nora's. We decided to check it out on Saturday afternoon, and they were doing a pretty good business, even at the off hour we went. So the word has already gotten out that the new kid in town is well worth a try! There are tables, and a good size bar. We plopped down at the bar. Menus were already out, which was good, because the Bartender was quite busy. Husband started off with a Moscow Mule, while I had a Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. The menu has a nice variety of seafood options. Appetizers, Po-Boys, Steam Pots, Fried Plates...and of course, oysters and more oysters. We decided to share the Sliders and the Fried Shrimp. There are two sliders, and I couldn't have been happier that you can choose different ones. We tried the Crab Cake and the Blackened Mahi. It came with Fries and Slaw. Excellent quality! Big shrimp, lightly battered and perfectly cooked. The Crab Cake was good, but it was fried and personally, I'm more of a pan-seared Crab Cake kinda girl. Both of us really liked the Mahi. Slaw was creamy and very sweet. Helped to cut through the richness of all the fried stuff. Fries were very plentiful, very good, but super salty. Overall we were both very pleased and looking forward to future adventures here! Note: right now there's plenty of parking available, but there are other shops and services going into this new area, which could make parking interesting in the future. Drove up tonight to grab dinner since I'm closer to Raleigh than Surf City. First, this restaurant is best at the beach. I've had it in Surf City, Wilmington, and Carolina Beach and it has become my favorite beach restaurant ... but not so much in Raleigh. I did a to-go order and waitress was busy but good. Put in order calamari and the pick three (mussels, crab legs, and shrimp). This is my first time ordering calamari here and will probably be my last. It was fried hard and besides the shape I wouldn't have known it was calamari. The cook should honestly be ashamed of how overcooked the calamari was. Almost 1/2 went in the trash. There's not much you can do to mess up the pick three but (yes there's a but) ... the cook gave me maybe three legs and then two knuckles. Fortunately I like knuckles but I expected legs!! My husband and I first found this restaurant in Durham on drive by let's try. I was so excited by the good food and the great service that I went back with friend and family. Once again on a second try - a great experience in Durham. While traveling I found one in the Charleston, SC area and was exactly the same. Outstanding, friendly service. They treated us like we were part of the neighborhood. So imagine this Pescatarian's excitement to learn there is one in Raleigh. Unfortunately I was "so" DISAPPOINTED. The service was just meh. Hey, what do you want type of thing. Nothing even close to the vibe in Durham or Charleston. I got what I needed, no one was rude it was just a stark difference in what I experienced. I had the blackened scallops as an appetizer. I got 3 large scallops but no complaints from me. Seafood is expensive whether you buy it and cook it yourself or order in a restaurant. Listen, I am a pescatarian so when I tell you these scallops were cooked to perfection? Someone got the memo, but let me be clear, I am ONLY talking about technique here. Seared perfectly and tender in the inside, because don't we all hate rubbery scallops?? Yes we do! Also hate rubbery Lobster, but I digress. The scallops were salty as all get out. I mean sooooo salty I could not dip them in the salty butter that they were served with because what I didn't need was more salt. There was no sauce to douse them in (I didn't want a sauce anyway) but I literally tried to find a way to rub off the salt, yes THAT SALTY. Thank God for my drink. I also ordered a salad with blackened Shrimp (note: I got way more shrimp in Durham when I ordered this same salad but whatever). Anyway need I tell you. Also the shrimp in Raleigh was also salty! Then I had a balsalmic salad dressing which did nothing to help it or to mellow it out the salt. I don't do the cream salad dressings but I should he asked or some ranch or something to help it. Instead, I asked for croutons hoping to balance it out. I could have sent the food back but I really hate doing that to people unless it's just so GOD awful I don't have a choice. I write reviews and never go back instead. It's sad though. I don't know how any professional cook, chef or preparer of food can confused "seasoning" with "salt". There is a big difference between the two. Great seasoning brings great flavor wherein you can identify spices and the combination of said spices bring a burst of joy to the whole experience. That's when you see people eyes widen and they say mmmm, and stuff like that! Salt is necessary for most dishes as an enhancement only. When it gets to the point that all you can experience is salt and you grab for bread or water, etc. Dude and Dudettes - I don't even know what to call that but it ain't good cooking! Absolutely horrible all because of the salt! I could live with the blah service but what I cannot do is spend money on a dish that is over salted. I had the crab balls at the other two establishments and they were "borderline" over salted. There were three of us at the table and we had a whole discussion about it because I was curious to know if it's just me being sensitive to salt. It was not. we all thought they were a "tad" salty. but what I had yesterday was over the top salty. It's a no for me, or maybe i need to try something that is not blackened I dunno. Scarred! I spend the rest of my evening flushing out the salt with water lol. read more

My husband and I and our 4 month old baby, my brother-in-law and his fiancé decided to have dinner here after picking them up from the airport. Food was fine but the place was very loud even though there was only a few people there and there was an obnoxious person at the bar that wouldn't leave us alone. This girl was so drunk and kept yelling "awww soo cute!! So f***ing cute!... boy or girl?.. how old is she??.. awww so cute, so f***ing cute" We were polite but intentionally did not show any interest in any farther discussion. We just wanted to enjoy our dinner together and be left alone. I asked the girl to please stop cussing at my child. She didn't. Once food got there we tried to eat real fast because we were so annoyed by this person and the bartender didn't do anything about it. She was also bothering other people at the bar. Once I was done eating, I decided to walk outside where it was quiet because my baby was tired and getting upset, my brother-in-law's fiancé came out with me while my husband and bro-in-law stayed inside to finish their meals.. next thing I know, this girl is now basically pole dancing (without the pole), leg up in the air, trying to be sexy, for my husband and brother in law! While we're right outside with our baby and can clearly see her.. the men just laughed, looked away and quickly finished eating, paid the bill and left. I don't understand why the bartender did nothing! It's her job to make sure people don't get out of control and to cut people off.
