Our server was nice enough but about as refined as a Applebees server. Not quite the experience we were hoping for. He also appeared to have most of the tables in our general area. Our back waiter was by far more professional and more attentive to our needs. The filet was average. The $40 crab cakes.... big dough ball. Not pleasant. Management promptly took them off our bill. When our server first approached for a drink order he asked us if we'd be wanting dessert as two of the dessert items take an hour to cook. We pre ordered the chocolate soufflé. When we were done with our meal, our server again asked us if we wanted any dessert. "Um, yes, we'd like the soufflé we ordered an hour ago". We did get it and it was great. Best part of the meal. Hope we didn't eat someone else's dessert because he forgot to place the order! All in all, not likely to return. read more

Staying Downtown Chicago on a Saturday night, wanted to book a good Steakhouse for dinner. Unfortunately, all of the main local ones; only had time slots of 4:30, or 9:00 PM ( or later). Contacted Shula's on N. Water street, (in the Sheraton Hotel); and they were wide open on times. Took a chance because I had dined at the one in Itasca at the Westin Hotel, about 7 years ago; and had a great experience. Well, not so here! Got there for our 8:00 PM RSVP, and only about 3 other tables occupied in the entire restaurant, (a red flag). Our waiter comes sauntering out, and in a bellowing voice; "How you doin! It's all good!; Our best dishes are the Porterhouse and the Rib eye; ( the most expensive steaks of course). This guy looked like Vin Diesel; but had about all the charm of a diesel engine. He had an attitude that was quite un-professional, for an expensive; supposedly "top of the line" Chicago steak house. His demeaner unfortunately went down hill from there; as we did not order any alcoholic beverages with our meal; and split a salad to start. My wife, did not want anything heavy; so she ordered the chicken, ($30.00); expecting something tasty and unique. I made up for things by ordering the Lamb Chops; $46.00; (I am a big lamb fan, and have had excellent fare when getting this dish from other name steak houses). Her chicken ended up being the basic grilled "airline" version chicken,and came with a bland, non-descript sauce; with nothing else on the plate. (sides were extra, so we shared a dish of asparagus with a balsamic glaze; nothing out of the ordinary). Unfortunately, she was very dis-appointed with her meal; and to pay $30.00 for a small half chicken? Boston market would have been better, and you would have gotten 3 meals for that price! My lamb was adequate; although for $46.00; It should have been a full rack; not just 2 double chops. When I asked the waiter for some mint jelly, he said that they did not have any; and explained that because of the way this lamb was prepared; it would not go with the dish? -LOL! That's a new one! Also, I had ordered the chops cooked medium, and they definitely came med-rare to rare. I shared a few bites of my lamb with my wife, and tried her chicken. Overall, the entire experience was a disappointment. We then asked for the bill, and got out of there. On the way out of the Sheraton; the doorman asked how our meal was, and we told him; "very disappointing". He nodded his head, and mentioned something about the restaurant closing soon. Shula's Steak House is located in the Sheraton Hotel on Water Street and is a great option if you are a steak lover. The service is fantastic and each waiter/waitress is extremely nice and helpful. My boyfriend started with the Caesar Salad which was good and I had the Lobster Bisque which I would not recommend- this was the only bad part about our dinner. The soup was too salty and after a few sips I had more than enough. For our main course my boyfriend had a steak and I had the grilled salmon, and we split a side of hash browns. He loved his steak and said it was very good and my salmon was great. The best part about the dinners is that they come with vegetables - sauteed peppers and mushrooms which is nice compared to other steak places where all you have on your plate is the piece of meat or fish. The hash browns were good, nothing spectacular but our dinners were very good. Nice atmosphere- great date place. read more

I was very hesitant to go here based on mixed reviews. It was late on a weeknight, and I was staying at the attached hotel. I wanted something good to eat but not have to go back out. I sat at the bar. The service was impeccable. Very friendly and on point despite being busy. Multiple bartenders share tabs for more efficient service. The warm loaf of bread and butter was amazing. My ultimate pleasure. Might be as good as the steak. I wanted the 8oz filet, but for an extra $4 I got the 12oz. Have to make the right business decisions...the steak was one of the best I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned, piping hot plate, and cooked exactly as ordered medium rare. The side of steamed asparagus was great as well. Thick spears, perfectly cooked. Simple but exactly as it should be. read more

Very sad because this was my husband's favorite steakhouse for a while. Good news is that the sides were good and the bread was delicious. But the main attraction: the steak was a major disappointment. A beautiful cut of steak cooked poorly. Ordered medium rare plus and there was no pink. It was so overcooked. They gave us a new steak and it was a layer of grey with a completely raw center. They must've just seared the sides. My brother came here and had the exact same experience. The service was great but it couldn't mask how poorly the steak was cooked. There are way too many steakhouses in Chicago for someone to bother here. read more

Tonight was my firs time dining here, although I've met clients at the bar in the past and had a good experience. The atmosphere is as many have described- very typical of a steakhouse type restaurant. It is surprisingly roomy with a great view of the city outside. Our food was excellent but I'm only giving it 4 stars because I felt that the service left much to be desired. When I'm paying $200 for dinner for 2 people, I'd expect my service to be top notch. Instead the hostess was robotic at best.....then the greeter/server/busser combination of men stopping by our table was confusing. It was hard to understand many of them and they were trying to joke and be funny and they often ending up just interrupting my client and I. Furthermore, small things like this- my client stopped one of the hostesses walking by and asked for a cup of coffee. She looked very inconvenienced and said, "I'll find your server so he can get that for you" -- that's NOT the right reply (and if you've read my reviews you know I've worked in the restaurant biz for 10 years or so during high school and college, I KNOW what good service is and it's not that difficult to do)- she should have simply said, "No problem sir, right away." instead of scoffing at us and letting us know it wasn't really "her job". The busser/server guy kept trying to clear our plates before we were finished and we were interrupted constantly with "is everything ok"-- it was just too much. Too many cooks in the kitchen. So food, wine, great, service MEH. Left me with a bit of a bummed out feeling. read more

Very expensive and really not very good. I expected more from a Chicago steakhouse. For $52 the ribeye was meh - gristley and not at all tender. I've had much better steaks at home. Do yourself a favor and walk across the street to WholeFoods and buy yourself a properly marbled ribeye. The steak came late on a very hot plate (i.e. heat lamped!) clearly intended to be delivered when the food for the party next to me was ready not when my steak was ready. The house salad with "roasted artichokes" had pickled artichokes from a can. The dressing was goopy and screamed Sysco! This is a perfect place for rich old people with no taste buds left and plenty to spend. This meal would have been mediocre at 1/3 the price. Tourist trap. Move on. read more

My review is for my experience at the bar. Stayed at the attached Sheraton Hotel and stopped in Shulas Saturday night for pre dinner drinks and appetizers. Frazzled and rude bartender ( not crowded mind you ) took nearly 15 minutes to take the order. She kept walking by and giving the "in a minute" finger. Finally ordered drinks. Upon deciding on appetizers she told me (while rushing past) " you're just gonna have to wait a while if you're gonna order food". Wow, okay?! She was helped out at this time by a male bartender who promptly leaned over the bar and asked my wife "if she liked being tied up" followed by "are you guys swingers?" Totally uncalled for and WTF??? I guess he was trying to back pedal at that point so he comped our drinks. We left totally disgusted by the lack of professionalism. Stay away from this chain of restaurants they attempted to place unauthorized charges for twice the price of our meal on our Hotel room and the waiter stated that the tip was not included in the bill when it was and he took over $150. The restaurant is nicely situated in the Sheraton Grand hotel and provides for a view of the Chicago street-scape. We don't go often, but, at least once every few months, it is a perfect setting for a "special night out". The entire staff is exceptionally friendly and welcoming adding to the positive dining experience. Last evening Kelley was our server. What a delightful and charming young lady!! She was knowledgable about the menu choices and offered helpful suggestions. She was extremely attentative to us; yet never made us feel rushed. During our evening we were accidentally "entertained" by one of the other diners!! He apparently had some issue with his reservation and he decided to openly express his discontent with the staff. Amanda, the manager, became the target of his outrage(possibly, in my opinion, exacerbated by alcohol). Nevertheless, in spite of his impolite attitude toward Amanda, she never lost her cool!! She maintained a complete level of professionalism attempting to assuage his anger and conclude the problem in a satisfactory manner. The problem seemed to be resolved when he elected to leave the dining room and allow the rest of his group to enjoy their meal in peace!! Cudos to the staff for defusing a potentially ugly situation in a dignified manner. Amanda and Kelly are a true asset to the place and we're looking forward to our next "special night out" - hopefully without the "floor show"!!! Oh, and by the way, the food was exceptional too. Unbelievable portions and my steak was prepared to perfection. The side choices of Asparagus and Spinach were outstanding. My first time here and I'm very disappointed, my stake was raw when I ordered it to be well no pink and then I asked for it be cooked a bit longer and it was burnt to a crisp. This establishment is located inside of the Sheraton hotel. It gives off a sophisticated vibe as you enter, and has very dim lighting. Enough so you can see, but no more. We made reservations via open table a few hours before arriving, and were promptly seated on arrival. As far as the "good" of the visit, that's about it. It all went down hill from there. After we were seated, it took about 10-15 minutes before anyone even came to our table to give us the starting glass of water and ask for our drink order. I ordered the "Shula's Special" martini or some nonsense. That and my girlfriend's martini order took another 15 minutes. Now, you must also understand that this was a New Years Eve dinner and the diner was surprisingly not really that packed(I can see why now), so there was no reason for any of this to take that long. Anyway, once the waitress finally arrived, she managed to get my girlfriend's order wrong, and the waitress stated she would take it back and replace it. This never came to be - she simply walked away and the next time we saw her I simply asked for our check and we left to go to Timothy O' Toole's, which was completely booked upon arrival. So we had to head back to our hotel to finish off our night. The service of this restaurant completely screwed our New Years plans up and put a sour taste in our mouths until we could both drink our faces off at the Hyatt's BIG bar(check out the Gold Coast mixed drink!). The $35 check for 2 martinis(one being wrong) and the terrible service obviously show that this establishment could use some training, and should get off their high-horse. Just because the majority of their customers are tourists or young couples doesn't mean that their money is less valuable. They definitely seemed to highly favor checking in on older-looking customers than us 20-somethings. I will never be returning. read more

Came here with a large party (around 15 people) for a big birthday bash on Saturday April 21 for dinner. We were seated immediately and service was prompt and spaced out nicely. Our server (can't recall her name- April I think) was professional and did an outstanding job all night handling so many people. The food was very good. Wonderful warm, fluffy bread with butter to start. Good appetizers including my house salad which I asked to be well chopped was nicely done and lobster bisque was quite good with a few chunks for lobster. The main meals were good - I had the tuna tartar while my boyfriend had a steak. I found the steak a big "chewy" but it was not bad either. Side dishes were also quite good and made to order (I asked for a few changes which they gladly accommodated). And the desserts were good - although I recommend the cheesecake overall. Dinner was on the pricey side, but everything we had was very good. I had beefsteak tomato salad with gorgonzola and my wife had the chopped tomato and mozzarella salad. The salads were very good. Went to Schula's to celebrate my sister's birthday, we should have just walked right out. It was so dark we almost tripped over other tables. We later found out why they keep it so dark, it isn't for the "atmosphere." I ordered a NY Strip cooked medium, my sister ordered a filet minion cooked med rare. We also had asparagus, new potatoes and two glasses of wine. When the steaks came out the waiter asks us to cut into them and I kid you not, shines a flashlight on the food. My steak was literally raw, not just rare. My sister's was way beyond well done, an insult to a filet. We tried to send them back but the waiter stood there and argued with us. He said "well that's what you ordered, so that's what you're stuck with" then he just walked away. A little while later the manager did come around and asked us how was our meal. We told him about the steaks and what our waiter had said. He did comp our steaks but I still had to pay $65 for two servings of mushy, overcooked asparagus, rubbery new potatoes and two glasses of turpentine masquerading as house red wine. Never again Shula's I think the place is suffering from delusions of grandeur. read more

I dined here to celebrate my wedding. The service was awesome. Staff was very friendly. We were provided with a complimentary chanpagne toast with strawberry/ whip cream and chocolate lava cake. For dinner I had the chicken and my husband had the salmon. Both was cooked well. I enjoyed the crab mac/ cheese and the ceasar salad. As someone who has dined at pretty much every steakhouse in Chicago, I can honestly say that Shula's ranks right up there with the best of them. I always, always bring my clients and business associates here. Many of the steakhouses that receive acclaim in the Chicago area are incredibly overrated: Gibson's, Chicago Cut, Prime and Provisons, etc. Why are the aforementioned busy? Because of advertising. If Shula's did more advertising there is no question this place would be just as busy if not busier than the other places. I have never been disappointed with a meal here. The service is always topnotch. Not once have I or my associates felt we were not treated like valued guests. At other places I always feel like I am being rushed along in my meal, just so the server can quickly turn the table. I've never felt that way here. Many times I have come here and it's been quite busy, but whomever I am dining with have never felt we were being pushed along to make room for another party. But the real reason I rank Shula's so high is the steak. Seriously, the steak is that good! I don't know what their secret is, but whatever they do they do it so well. The sides are more than generous ( do yourself a favor and get the scalloped potatoes) and enough to share. If you want a drink, the pours are generous for a downtown steakhouse. And without question they have the best molten lava cake in Chicago! So glad I discovered this place. read more

Atmosphere okay. Took my brother in law, nephew and my 6 year old son there for dinner. No kids menu which was a disappointment but ate there anyway. Service was pretty good but my meal left something to be desired. The other guys said their steaks were good. I had the portherhouse. First one came out well done on a request for medium. They kindly offered to replace which they did but this one came out rare. I just ate it as not wanting to hold up the others. Lobster mash was okay but not a lot of flavor. I would not return based on this meal. For $43, I would have expected it cooked to perfection. read more

This place is the BEST! We live near St. Louis. There used to be a Shula's in downtown St. Louis - that is where we were hooked. Unfortunately, the St. Louis location closed. The next nearest Shula location is Chicago. We missed the steak so much, that twice a year (on our birthday's) we jump on the bus in St. Louis in the wee hours of the morning and go to Chicago for the day. We explore the city and head for Shula's and our birthday dinner at 5:30. After dinner, we hop back on the bus to St. Louis. It's a long day, but the meal is that good! I love steak and have eaten in many fine steakhouses - Shula's is flavor is unique and quality is second to none. Their crabcakes and remoulade melts in your mouth - - - they are so good I cannot believe they are not illegal!!! Equal to the food is the staff - The manager Amanda is so welcoming - she makes you feel like you are sitting down with old friends. The waitstaff is unparalleled - Milan and Kelly can guide you thru the selections efficiently without being stuffy - there when you need them- yet giving you space to enjoy your meal. Very friendly! When we leave we are already anticipating our next visit! You could spend more other places but you will never do better!!!! read more

We visited Shula's Steak house on our 11th anniversary. We ordered the 22oz steak; it was grisly and tough. The mushrooms were gross and were sent back to the kitchen. Asparagus...meh. Large baked potato was average. Soda was $4 per person! Once we finished the second glass, they didn't offer to refill it. The waitress couldn't care less that we were there but was extremely chatty with another table that had a flirty guy. When she did check on us it was like a drive-by check. "You doing ok? Ok, good" as she would continue walking passed. There was no love lost between her and the fella that was helping her either. She talked down to him like she owned the place. Talk about uncomfortable. When we were given our check, they forgot a pen so we could sign the receipt. Each time I tried to flag her down (3 times), she practically ignored me. So I decided to settle in and just wait. I was getting angrier by the minute!!! She finally came back and blamed the man helping her for not bringing the pen when she was the one who brought the bill in the first place. NEVER EVER going back. Lava cake was great but I know how to make it in the comfort of my own kitchen so I'm good :) Bring a coat and mittens if you do decide to visit Shula's because you'll need one. I froze! read more

Shula's Steak House is for carnivores with very large Appetites (I am a meat lover). The menu comes on a football, which is basically a list of the cuts of meat. All items are a-la-cart ($10-$20). The meat cuts average about 32 oz. and there is a $10 per person charge to split a cut of meat between two people (you have to do your own cutting, they just give you an extra plate). The main selling point of the restaurant is supposed to be the specially raised black angus beef. Don't waste you time, the meat is flavorless but it was semi-tender. I personally have had better cuts of meat out of my local supermarket in the discount bin (this is not an exaggeration). The rest of the menu is very unimaginative. The Lobster Bisque soup tasted like it came out of a can. The asparagus was thick and overgrown stalks that were very tough and chewy (good asparagus should be thin young stalks that are tender). I expected a lot better for $15 for a simple side dish. The service was slow and snobbish once they realized the my party of four was going to split two cuts of meat rather than order four (less tip I guess). My friend's wife summed up our experience when before the main course even arrived she said, "I have a bad feeling about this." I cannot in any way recommend Shula's. I would give it a half star for the tenderness of the meat but that is all. read more
