Unfortunately , they never bothered to tell me to put plastic over all my belongings inside the garage -- it was a mess which no one ever came back as promised to clean up. Nails all over my driveway, yard, and inside garage for my dogs to step on--2 years later I am still finding them! Spoke to owner on the phone about disconnected heating vent in the attic a month later, but he denied it was his guys (even though he was never there while they worked.) Would not return to fix! With any large construction job, there will be positives and negatives. The positives with Joe Schulman were that the actual shingle roof came out very nicely. Joe fabricated some flashing to go around a skylight and the chimney, and did good work. The negatives were the work leading up to the roofing. I had a fair bit of termite damage and many boards needed to be replaced. He kept saying that he would have a better idea of what would be needed, but that day never really came. It just compounded day after day, there was always more that needed to be done. An original quote of 32K ballooned to 55K and would have kept going, but I finally said enough. The cost was for high-end work, but the actual work was mediocre. There was not a great attention to detail, and the materials used were not of great quality. There was gaps in the fascia that he told me to just fill in with caulking. My complaint about my garage door opener, which worked before they got there, but not after they left, was dismissed. I found that one of my pygmy palm's trunk had been broken during the process. There is a wavy fascia board that they installed. The drip flashing was scratched down to the metal during installation and would surely rust if I hadn't seen it. In the end, I guess it comes down to this: Would I recommend this company to a friend? and unfortunately the answer would be "no" if it involved anything other than simply re-shingling. read more

Not only did I get a response the same day they squeezed me in to do the repair within a few days. We needed a repair on an improperly installed six-year-old roof, which had resulted in rotted eaves and leaks here and there. Truth is, we knew we needed the repair for a long time, but few things strike fear in our hearts more than dealing with contractors, so we put it off far longer than we should have. After an exhaustive search and countless unreturned phone calls to other contractors (who knew it would be so difficult to get a roofer to call back?), I contacted Shulman. While it DID take a week or so to get a return call (though honestly, I suspect they called back far sooner than I think they did, without leaving a message), once scheduled to come out and estimate the roof, Joe arrived as promised, explained my problem in depth, and gave me a reasonable estimate. (One earlier contractor was going to charge literally four times Shulman's quote; another's quote was so low that I felt I could reasonably anticipate either an abandoned project or a roof as bad as the one originally installed.) Once I decided to go with Shulman, Joe came back by with a contract for me to sign and, when I asked about a deposit, told me that wasn't necessary (unheard of, in my experience!); I can't say that's a routine occurrence, but I was pleasantly surprised - I was prepared to write a check, but it went toward his integrity, and established early trust. Throughout the process, Joe was accessible, returned my calls within minutes, answered all of my silly questions, took the time to get a permit at my request (even though it wasn't really needed, but I wanted to avoid potential trouble with the city later), and, when my job had to be pushed back due to a problem with a bigger job his crew was already working, notified me well in advance to make sure it was okay to delay. Once the job was started, his crew showed up on time and finished the entire job in a single day. After they left, you wouldn't have even known they were here, the cleanup was so thorough. I can't recommend them highly enough; during busy season it may take a week or so to get a contractor out to quote the job, but once things start moving, I can't imagine a simpler, more straightforward process. First off, this is not a review for work performed as work was not arranged. I was very disappointed in the quotation process, which was only done by phone and not in person, and the quotation was to replace an entire section of roof for a small leak. The costs were extremely high, nearly 5 times what it actually cost me to have the repair completed by another company. We needed our old shingle roof removed, replace dry rotted wood and re-roof with new high definition shingles on our 1,200 sqft, single story home. We called Joe for a quote and he arrived right on time, was clean and was very pleasant to talk with. We received several other quotes; his was right in the middle of them all. Ultimately we went with Shulman Roofing because of how thorough Joe was. He not only explained every step of the process but also provided a brief slideshow of photos reinforcing their procedure and gave details of the materials used. We were getting the more from his company than the others were going to do since his was also going to add a ridge line ventilation system. Joe noticed specifics about our house that no one else pointed out. He found that our home had many large exhaust vent openings through the attic - more than normal for our 1,200 sqft home. We confirmed that the water heater had long since been moved to the garage, leaving the unused pipe still in place. Joe said he will have it removed to help eliminate that entry point which could cause leaks later on. He also inquired about our exhaust vents in the bathrooms since our house never had any installed. He suggested that a vent be installed for the existing bathroom fan (which just blows into the attic and not out through the roof) and also adding one over the other bathroom since we're planning to add a bathroom fan in the future. This way the vents can be properly installed and sealed now with no worry of having to open up the roof in the future. We liked the fact that he took was taking the time to not only see what we need now but what could be needed later. His quote had offered two prices - the difference depended on which shingle type we preferred. (We opted to go with the high definition.) Joe had an opening the very next week, so we scheduled it for the following Monday. The crew that was sub-hired to remove the old roof worked quickly and was done on Monday before noon. They did a great job at leaving practically no debris on the property (anything left was just small wood pieces or nails that fell hidden in the planters.) The wood repairs were done that afternoon and then the roof was loaded with new material. Tuesday morning the city inspector performed the initial inspection and over that day, Wednesday and into Thursday evening the new roof was installed. By Friday morning the city inspector came back to complete the final review. Throughout the week we did have many questions and concerns come up since this was all new to us. Joe was extremely responsive and dedicated to making sure that not only was everything correct, but that we were also at ease. The specifics which we talked about at the time of the quote (IE: removing and installing additional vents) as well as a few other items were all completed as he said it would be. Joe was easy to get a hold of and returned your call within minutes. His excellent communication made the process that much easier. For this being the first time we've ever had to hire a company for a house project, we can only hope anything else we need will go as easily as Shulman Roofing made it for us! read more

With a big roof leak and a huge storm coming in a few days, I was in desperate need of a roofing repair company. I called four local companies and nobody returned my call except Joe Shulman. Before he called me he looked up my house on google street and satellite views and could see where on my tile roof the potential leak was. He asks me "is the leak above your front door" and I replied "YES". He explained to me that fixing just that area would be a temporary fix and the only professional way to fix it would be to re-tar paper the whole section where the leak was. This made perfect sense to me as I would have done it the same way "if I knew how to do roofing". His guys came out and got the tar paper down before the rain started Thursday night. This review has been long overdue! We had half of our roof re-roofed in 2013. I'm happy to report that after two winters and a handful of heavy rains the roof has held up nicely - totally bone dry including the newly replaced skylight! The entire process has been a breath of fresh air. We had a few different configurations in mind ranging from localized repair to re-roofing different combination of zones based on an aerial photo of our roof top. Joe was flexible enough to work with us and gave us quick quotes on the spot followed by detail contracts in email within hours. During the actual process, Joe was prompt to respond; gave us updates with before and after pictures. He even refunded us $200 since our roof didn't have any sheathing damages and put the refund towards upgrading our skylight. His crew - Dago (?) and his partner was punctual and professional. My husband and I struggled for months to locate a roofer who was qualified to provide us with the roofing system we wanted, which included the installation of cool roof shingles and the design of an optimal attic ventilation system, as well as repairing an old sagging, leaking, tired, and neglected roof. Our existing roof had structural problems, leakage issues, and three layers of deteriorating/leaky shingles. The fascia boards on the house and garage also needed to be replaced. Thankfully we found Joe Schulman, who worked with us to find the best cool-roof shingles and designed an optimal ventilation system for our attic, which included a ridge vent and O' Hagan vents strategically situated to vent the areas where hot air would accumulate. Joe also identified a number of structural problem areas and fixed them, especially by adding slope to a flat area that was always a past drainage problem which would lead to roof leaks. He ended up using an industrial quality coating to foster effective draining and have long service life (see Photo #1). Additionally, upon Joe's recommendation, we had our fascia boards replaced with termite resistant and pre-primered, WindsorOne fascia boards. When our termite inspector came out for an annual check he glanced admiringly at the fascia boards and told me he has yet to find a WindsorOne fascia board that has been infested with termites. We are so thankful that Joe recommended that brand. Compared to the other roofing contractors we interviewed, who tend to be focused on applying shingles, rather than designing a roof system, Joe is a roofing craftsman, who can help design and then implement a roofing system that takes into account ventilation, and the structural integrity of the underlying roof decking. In our case, the roof was framed in the 1950s, and not built very well, and we inherited 3 layers of decaying shingles. Regarding the conduct of the work, the demolition crew was highly skilled, and quickly removed the old shingles with minimal debris falling around out house (see Photo #2 - top). His repair and shingle installation crew found and fixed many damaged decking 1x6 boards that needed replacement, (see Photo #2 - bottom), and discovered that our dormers were not properly anchored to the roof, and found a way to properly re-attach them to the roof structure. At the end of each of the working days, the installation crew diligently cleaned up the grounds of debris. Incidentally, Joe does not subcontract out the work for the roof repair and shingle installation; only the demolition work is done by a reputable subcontractor. This was important to us and was one of our requirements in our search for a reputable roofer. All of our roofing problems were quickly fixed so that the new cool-roof shingles had a structurally sound deck upon which they were laid. The new roof runs significantly cooler than the old roof, greatly reducing our need to use air conditioning, and it looks great! As it turns out the cost for the Joe's roof work competitively priced. His estimate was similar to the estimates that we received from less skilled/capable roofers. We highly recommend Joe for anyone that wants their roof cost-effectively done at a high level of quality. Unless you're simply looking for the lowest, rock-bottom price, I recommend calling Shulman Roofing and not wasting your time with other companies. (His price is reasonable but not the lowest.) My experience with this company was extremely positive. Here are a few of the highlights: 1. After I left a message requesting an estimate, Joe Shulman called me back right away. He arrived on time the next day and gave me a written estimate, along with brochures for and samples of the various products they use. 2. He also gave me a list of 40 to 50 references. I called four of the people on the list and they all provided glowing reviews. 3. Our roof had a weird little "dog leg" in the front that had never really bothered me, but Joe suggested that we straighten it out at minimal expense. So we did, and I can't believe how much better it looks! 4. On the first day, the crew was scheduled to arrive between 7am and 8am. They arrived at 6:55am. (I'm obsessively punctual, so this made my day!) 5. Joe said the job would be done in two days, and it was. 6. I recently had solar panels installed and the solar company butchered my beautiful slate roof. I called a few roofing companies. Some companies called back claiming to have experience on slate roofs, but when they come out, it's evident they really don't know that much. My roof in Huntington Beach was finished a few days ago and I'm extremely happy with the results. They were prompt and attentive with all dealings I had with them, gave a thorough inspection of my very damaged roof prior to giving me an estimate, explained the different ways the problems could be dealt with, from cheaper fixes to full repairs, and issues that may come up once the old roof is removed and unseen damage becomes more visible. He provided a long list of local references with the color and material on each, which gave us the opportunity to drive by the nearby homes and view the quality of the workmanship and see how the different colors actually looked on a house, which was very helpful in determining the color we chose. Work started on time and finished within the estimated time frame in spite of the size of the job increasing as more damage was uncovered. The eaves and the exposed rafter tails were badly damaged with dry rot and termite damage, and needed to be repaired or replaced. I was kept apprised of the situation and consulted on what needed to be done. I opted for fully restoring the roof to the original dimensions as opposed to cheaper options that would reduce the overhang of the eaves. I replaced or added new fascia all around. The guy was on the roof for 1.5 hours "prepping" and then said he would need to come back on the following monday to finish and do the repair. After 10 calls in 6 days and 1 nasty email, he finally called and had a multitude of pathetic reasons why he would not move forward with the job. Totally unprofessional not to return a call saying he didnt feel comfortable doing the repair. Additionally, the leak was in our child's nursery and he had NO regard for that and the sense of urgency we were feeling as parents of a young child........Call someone else for roofing, this guy isn't worth the anguish...... read more

Shulman roofing could teach their competitors a thing or two (or maybe they should simply just go on Yelp and do some reading). I needed a new roof and called multiple companies. I went with Shulman Roofing because appearances matter, namely: the company owner (!!) comes out to run an estimate and lay out the game plan. Other companies just send out some lowly intern. Most importantly, Joe is patient with people who know next to nothing about roofs and strives to add aesthetic and functional value to the home. To him, it is not just a roof, but part of a larger unit. Joe and team definitely can see the forest and not just the trees. Had a roof leak 2 years ago....called Shulman Roofing...they were out the same day to cover the leak and prepare for a tear down and new roof....however due to the lame HOA in Mission Viejo, it took 3 weeks before I could get the green light to move forward with the project.
