Strangely tasty... I really wasn't expecting a lot when I walked in because it's not a style of food I even like. I reluctantly ordered a sausage burger which came with a side of the "world's best fries"... I kind of hate them for claiming they're the world's best and then actually kind of delivering on it. I mean, they'd probably be better if they were covered in shaved truffles, but for a basic french fry, I gotta say I was actually impressed and am hard pressed to remember a better fry I've had anywhere in the world. Walk a little further down the Ave. and right by the post office you'll find Shultzy's! It's bright yellow with big brown trimmed windows. Sometimes in the summer those windows are pushed opened, giving the tables by them a patio like feel without actually being outside. However if you do want actual outside seating in the back they have a covered area. It's a little crowded back there, I prefer the ones by the front! With all the sunlight coming through those windows in the summer, it makes this one of the brightest bar's I've been too which is really nice. All the natural light keeps this place and the staff upbeat and friendly. Also doesn't make you feel as bad for day drinking when you can enjoy the sun instead of hiding from it. Plus you're really able to take in the decorations that give off a truly German feel. Happy hour is from 3-6 on weekdays and all day Sundays. I recommend the Currywurst for a happy hour meal (comes with a ton of fries!) and the Moscow Mule for a drink (only 5.50 during the summertime). The only thing I don't like about the happy hour is that you can only get happy hour price on food if you buy a drink with it. So I always end up spending more than I want to. Also the prices here have gone up here quiet a bit since I first started coming here about 5 years ago. But not surprised since it's in a prime location and restaurants tend to turn over pretty fast on the Ave. I'm a sucker for German bars and this is by far my favorite one in the city of Seattle. The food is really nothing too special, though they do have an impressive list of options--from curly fries to cheesy tater tots! I came here for dinner with a group of friends and ordered the Bratwurst plate. I recommend this for anyone who wants a little bit of everything. The portions are HUGE. I mean it. The fries spill over your plate and there are even extra sides you can add too. The sausage itself was nothing out of this world, but it will satisfy your cravings for fries/burgers/sausages/late night food in general. My favorite thing about this place are the options of drinks. Their drink menu is pretty extensive, and there are even seasonal ones that are pretty good! I recommend the apple pie bourbon sweet tea for a fall drink. My friends and I also ordered the 'mystery shots,' which was really fun to try out. The service was attentive and helpful, which I really appreciated since I was in a group of about 14 people. Overall, good place to relax and grab a drink and some bar food with some friends. WHITES ONLY? No problem with the food, but with the customer service. I came to pick up my order, and so I asked the waitress at the bar. She did not overtly say anything negative, but i felt she was being passive aggressive. Her solemn tone of voice, sullen facial expression, and lax posture made me feel she was annoyed at me for having approached her. When i said i came for a pick up, she asked "a pickle?" with a subtle hint of disgust. I felt she was taunting my pronunciation. When I said I had ordered with ubereats, she immediately asked me if I had called in my order, as if she was oblivious to what I said. She felt unforthcoming, and i felt very uncomfortable during the exchange. I noticed that the restaurant was predominantly western themed, and the patrons were mostly white, which made me suspect she was racist and thus why she treated me as such (im not white). it is just a hunch, but i dont really see any other reason. she didnt seem cranky before i talked to her. I almost never write restaurant reviews, but this experience scarred me a bit, and so i couldnt help but write about it. i honestly feel discouraged to come back again, and for a quick take out no less. read more

I just want to say that the daytime server and bartender yesterday wednesday 8 are amazing and I hope that ownership gives them a giant holiday bonus and whatever shifts they want! I've come in with a group of classmates several times after exams and they have always been great. Usually our group is small but yesterday more of our class than usual decided to come out and celebrate the end of our exams - it was a larger crowd than a normal lunch time and several were celebrating extra hard. We have been coming to Shultzys for 4 years now and it used to be one of our favorite burger places in the neighborhood and in Seattle. Unfortunately I have to say I'm not a big fan of the new menu. We've tried it out a few times since the change but the burgers just aren't as good. The cheesesteak seems exciting but it was a bit bland as well. Their fries are so good. I would go there again just to order them. I had the cajun sausage I believe it's called. It wasn't great. The sausage was on the dry side. The flavor was lacking, and the toppings did little to add to the flavor of the sausage as a whole. The coleslaw was also lacking flavor. It could've used any salt, pepper, maybe even some vinegar. The outside seating area was also a little cramped. It was shaded though so that's nice. It seemed like a cool place to chill when there's not a lot of people. If it was busy, I'd rather not. This place rocks! (or it pops, specifically 90s pop one of the last times i was here) I have been at UW for a couple of years now, but before this last month had only ever been a couple times, and one of those times was on Marc's bar crawl, and I was pretty buzzed by that point in the evening. But some buddies and I stopped by a couple of weeks ago to have a business meeting/hh drink or two, and I was so impressed by the reasonable hh prices, nice vibe, nice waitress, and bomb chili cheese fries that I suggested we hold one of the hh events that we run for our grad school there. We have held these events at a few different places on the ave, and this was the nicest (though College Inn was good too, and underground is fine during the winter, but light open and airy at Shultzy's is way better for this weather weve been having). The waiters were very patient with our weird tab rules, and the friendliest of any bar ive been to on the ave. They had some beer specials for happy hour, and also a margarita for cinco de mayo, everyone was happy with their drinks. The pretzels were awesome, and once again so were the chili cheese fries. Unfortunately I discovered the next day that some people misunderstood what we were paying for, and left thinking we had it covered when there was a tab left. I called them to let them know I would be stopping by to pay the rest of the tab, and they were really nice and understanding about the whole thing. Needless to say I left a big tip. Forget the hot dogs, it's all about the wiiiiiinnngggsss! Just kidding, I've never tried the sausages here but the wings and fries are great bar foods. The wings are so crispy and delicious. They come with dipping sauces instead of being drowned in them. This is a plus for people like me who enjoy crispy wings on their own or with sauce -- depends on my mood. They're exceptionally crispy, like the BWW hype has nothing on these wings. I'm surprised that I've never ventured in here before, it's at the beginning of the Ave but never seemed that interesting to me. Fresh Food, Amazing Brews. I believe in credible reviews. I worked here for about a year (through the remodel) prepping, serving, bartending and cooking (when it was slow i liked to dabble.) Some tips from a former employee.. If they have Spaten Oktoberfest on tap, get it. It's smooth, balanced and slightly sweet. In my opinion, a great match for anything on the menu. Spicy Chicken (or any chicken sandwich)-Ask for it on an Amorosa roll. The shape is perfect and the Amorosa holds up better than the normal hamburger bun. Fries--don't need much improvement but try dipping them in a side of "burger sauce"--they'll know. *the burger sauce is not vegetarian, at least not when i worked there. It has worcestershire in it, so vegetarians and friends of the vegetarian, be careful! Cole slaw--just try it. I hear at the moment they're assessing whether people really like the cole slaw. Personally, I love it. From the beginning of the day to the end! Sausage Chili--LOVE this Chili. I used to hate that I loved it cause I had to make it so damn much... I'd always put the chili over some rice (red beans and gumbo style) mmm.. Skip the happy hour food. It's decent but the regular menu is what you came for. Tip your waiter! I've had pretty good experiences here in the past and recently came by towards the end of a Friday HH.... and found it almost completely packed. I was pretty surprised and glad that two of our friends were late, because there weren't any tables open when we got there (so we sat at the bar). The service was great. We were in a hurry because we had plans to see a movie about 45 minutes (after the late friends arrived), so we mentioned it to a server. About 15 minutes later another staff member came by and checked in to make sure we're still on track for getting to our movie on time. The staff actually communicates!?! This is kind of amazing! HH deals.... eh. They're alright. Food-wise you're kind of limited because they only had two options of wings, chili cheese fries, (three) mini burgers, and their junkyard dog. It was pretty tasty, but each food item cost $5 and that didn't really feel like a great deal. The HH beer specials give you a choice of the daily micro or the daily German... and they were so-so on that day. I learned that I'm not a Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale kind of girl. I'd give Shultzy's a 3.5 if I could. This is a tough one... but, it's been flavorful and service has been good, so.... I think a 4 sounds better. Random tid-bit: One time I saw a woman walking out of there with her ~13 year old sons and saying "If you go to UW, you are not going to eat here! This place is WAY out of your budget!" After the U-District street fair, I fell in love with the hot dogs from Tokyo Dog. After a long day of getting ready to move out, I was in a pickle between Shultzy's or a nice juicy burger. I started to think about the flavor bursting Tokyo Dog that I had. Suddenly, I started to craving a really good sausage. I've heard mixed things about Shultzy's and I really wanted to give it a shot because they specialize in sausages so they must be good right? One thing that most people complain about is the service. I completely agree with the others on this. However, we can't expect much when the place is more like a pub than a restaurant. You seat yourself when the place isn't busy (it's crowded during the Superbowl, World Cup or any sport games). We took a seat and a waiter saw us and handed us our menus. I was stuck between the Bratwurst (which is their most popular sausage) and the Andouille (which is a pork sausage made up of 16 different spices/ingredients). Intrigued I decided to go for the Andouille since I see and hear of it less often. All the hot dog like sandwiches come with grilled onions and peppers. My partner, being the spice lover he is, decided to get the Rajin' Cajun. You get a side of coleslaw as well as fries. However, you can substitute the coleslaw for my fries or substitute the fries for sweet potato fries for $2 more. I also heard that their chili is divine, but I have not tried it yet. After 6 minutes our food came out. We were excited and had high hopes and expectations. Unfortunately, I don't think I should have compared it to Tokyo Dog. The sausage itself was good and full of flavor but that was the only thing that was carrying the flavor. The bread was decent. It isn't your normal hot dog bun. It's half of a loaf of some sort of bread. There's no sauce or anything that goes along with the sausage which is why I think it lacked the flavor burst I was looking for. The onions and peppers were mediocre and so was the coleslaw. I actually put the coleslaw on top of my sandwich to try to give it more flavor. It didn't work that well though. The Andouille wasn't spicy and it didn't have a kick to it. It actually tasted pretty mild and I wouldn't be able to tell you the 16 ingredients in it. Everything sort of meshes together. My partner said that the Rajin' Cajun was decent as well but not as good as Tokyo Dog. It truly lacked the bursting flavor that we thought it would have. The sausage could have had more juiciness to it, but they were still alright. The fries are really something though. I think I may have enjoyed the fries more than the sausage sandwich. They are skinny fries and they don't feel as greasy and oily as thick cut fries. They do give you a ton of fries so it'll leave you satisfied when it comes to the fatty saltiness that everyone loves. Our server never came back to check up on us and we never had a refill on our waters. When we wanted to order to-go for my brother we had to flag someone down. However, they were kind about our to-go order and wrapped it up nicely for us and labeled the boxes. Though we did tell the waiter we wanted our to-go to be on a separate check and she forgot. In the end we decided not to waste our time and just paid for all of it on one check. I'm not sure if I will be back because it left me feeling like the place was just average. However, it's still decently filling and does cure a sausage and fries craving. In total for our Andouille and Rajin Cajun we paid around 24$. The chicken wings are really average as well and they are actually pretty pricy for University Way. The only pro is probably that you can ask your friends to order drinks and you can take a half of it and no one really cares. And they open late so you can hop over for more drinks after a party. Although we were 4, Shultzy's looks good for larger groups to get together, enjoy good food, drink some beer and maybe even watch a game on flat screens. Good, fun vibe here. Although I would have liked to see a sampler platter on the menu (show off your stuff Shultzy) I chose to start off with a cup of their "award-winning Sausage Chili" and El Diablo, their spiciest, Chorizo sausage along with some great local IPA to wash it down. The chili was good and well worth trying and El Diablo was spiced for Pacific NW standards. Not too spicy but flavorful. The delight was served over a bet of shoestring fries that were also good. The service was great and our waiter was very informed on the menu and the German beers on tap. Good job! Don't want sausage? There are other alternatives of chicken or hamburgers but you should come here to eat the wurst. I suggest you make your way to the U District and order up some sausage at Shultzy's. The food is good, the service is great and the beer is cold. I look forward to going back and trying the bratwurst. Maybe I can talk them into 3 various links, and no sides. I like this place. It's relaxed, has a great selection of beers, and serves good bar food. I ordered the Vesuvius sandwich the first time I came here, and I must admit that after eating half of the sandwich, and half of the skinny fries, I felt disgustingly full and guilty - which, sometimes, isn't a bad thing. It must have been a really good thing, because I came here at second time in the same week and ordered the salmon caesar, probably out of guilt for eating the mountain of fries during my earlier visit. The salad was delicious, and the currant cidar I ordered along with it was great. Service was a little slow, but I hear that's their reputation. I'm really not sure what to say other than I seriously love this place. The cheese fries alone are worth coming here for. A classic Ave restaurant that brings nothing but happiness and good food to the Husky old and young. It's a typical college hangout but with German food. European beers on tap and in the bottle. Want a good plate of wings, then come try Schultzy's crispy wings. I'm not even sure where to start because this place has such good food items. Burgers that will leave you stuffed and even a mean cheddar wurst for the plain people. Did I mention the cheese fries? Deliciously crispy shoestring fries covered in a cheese sauce to die for. A big area with plenty of seating inside and out. Bar, table and booth seats fill the building. If it's warm enough outside they open the patio up top. The interior is decorated in wood and flags drape from the ceiling. They have TVs and watch major sports events. They will even do specials if particular games are going on. During big events and school related holidays it can get busy, busy If you wanted to call and reserve a section of seating they also do that. For larger groups they have tables on the north side of the restaurant They do different daily drink specials if your into that type of thing. It's on the Ave so parking will be difficult. The servers are always nice and friendly, but a little incompetent and the kitchen is the slowest thing in slow-ville. Even when we go in with an hour to spare before needing to rush off elsewhere, and we warn our server that we're short on time, more often than not we still end up taking the food to go. They should be accustomed to being a high-volume restaurant, as a popular Ave location, and learn how to fry up a couple sausages faster by now. Apparently not. Last time I went I ordered wine and the glass was streaky. The time before that, it took them 45 minutes to bring out an order of chicken wings and since we had elsewhere to be, we (again) asked for the food to go. The kitchen threw a few wings in the box. No bleu cheese, no carrots or celery, just some wings. In a box. Oh okay. Go here for the sausages and make sure you have at least an hour to spare. We love Schultzy's! Living just nearby, this is sort of my neighborhood bar; I go with friends a lot for middle-of-the-week beers/wings/CHEESE FRIES when the mood strikes. Seriously, what is in those cheese fries? Whatever it is, it's probably not legal. That's how addictive they are. The wings are also AMAZING, some of the best I've had not just in Seattle, but anywhere. Usually the sauce is served on the side, but if you ask they'll toss them in the sauce just before serving, which means that they stay nice and crispy rather than getting soggy and weighed down. I also appreciate the extensiveness of their draft list. Sometimes the draft menu isn't in sync with what's actually available, but the server has always been able to recommend something similar, which I've always enjoyed and appreciated. The only drawback to Schultzy's is that, given that it's so close to the UW campus, the bar is often packed, especially on the weekends, and they have a tendency to close off half the dining room for "reserved parties" that seem to never show up. Otherwise, the service is friendly, the beer is cold, the wings are spicy, and the fries are...from another, tastier planet. Highly recommended! read more

I too am a former employee from Shultzy's. I was a customer prior to being an employee. I have returned many times over the years and will continue to support the business. I can say that there is always something on the menu for everyone. You say you 'don't like sausage', well then you should have some red beans and rice. Or some gumbo always hits the spot. I am not sure if they still have it on the menu, but if you haven't had a 'bubba slaw' be sure to ask for one. Came early afternoon for German sausage and delicious beer. Generally when I've come here, it's packed full of people, so early afternoon was a great time to come for a little quiet. Service is acceptable, nothing spectacular, but the gentlemen were courteous with each encounter. The sausages are all pork or a beef pork blend, and delicious. The cheese fries are delightful. BEEEER! Great place for a beer and happy hour prices are great for food. 5 bucks for a nice list of things: Sweet potato fries, philly sandwich, hot wings etc. Environment is nice and trendy.
