TLDR: food quality went downhill after the renovations; would not recommend anymore. It breaks my heart to give Shun de Mom so low of a review. Last year in Spring 2023 (before the semester-long renovations), Shun de Mom was my favorite eatery in CSTAT. I ate here at least 2-3 times/month. However, they're not the same anymore (maybe a different management staff?). For starters, they changed their menu and removed the Thailand Chicken (my favorite dish) along with raising their prices slightly. More importantly, they changed the sauces so "saucy" dishes (like the Orange Chicken) just did not taste good. The chicken lo mein had very little flavor and the noodles seemed "rubbery" for some reason. Lastly, the salt and pepper pork ribs looked exceedingly deep-fried and I'm fairly sure had MSG on them. The only semi-decent dish was the chicken fried rice. So if you're hankering for chicken-fried rice within walking distance of campus, then this is your place. One positive is the servers were exceedingly friendly and the food came out fairly quickly (~10 minutes). The chairs are metal and neither comfortable nor uncomfortable. read more

I am half Chinese on my mother's side, and ever since she passed away a few years ago, it has become extremely difficult to find a place that recreates her authenticity in cooking as much as this place has. The lunch plate is just weird and the way they serve it just isn't good. They give you an option of rice or rice, then three "entrée's", which consisted of, bean sprouts, green beans, and mushrooms, then four assortments of "meats", what kind of meat and what cut NO idea, there was no signage for you to know what you were even pointing at. One of the meat options I did get had about a million tiny bones in it and hardly any meat on it, I have to be honest all I could think was I am eating poor little fluffy the cat. The other option I picked was sweet and sour pork, but they don't even tell you where the condiments are ect... Maybe dinner is better but its a hard pass for lunch. read more

Honestly a great place. The food is pretty stellar and authentically Chinese- with more Americanized options available if desired. I honestly really think it's a beautiful place inside since the remaster- but if it's cold out, wear warm clothing, it doesn't have great air conditioning inside. The staff doesn't talk much, yet they are cordial and not rude to you when ordering. One of my favorite places in College Station, and the best Chinese food I've had. Their more Americanized food is really good, but I'd encourage you order off the "Chinese" menu for something authentic and delicious! I've eaten here for years and the staff is always very friendly. Well as Chinese I really love this place . The food served here are the same as what I ate at canteen in China. I also tried Panda Express at once. I feel Panda Express is Ok but somehow strange when I tasted the sweet and sour flavor. But here the salty and a little spicy food is more authentic. I do admit that the environment is not satisfying here and always crowded when lunch time. But as is shown, the costumers are most Chinese and it's the best evidence of its authenticity! When I try some foreign food, I always want the original one. As most steaks and pizzas are different in China, I will never agree that Panda Express is Chinese food (It's more American style), and when some of my American friends are curious about Chinese food, it's the firsT place for introducing. read more

This is a cute hole in the wall place. Went there yesterday for lunch with my boyfriend and the staff was really nice. The cashier had to get another employee who spoke English but I didn't mind that. Our food came out promptly and was steaming hot. Kind of odd that the food was on paper plates but it was pretty cheap with huge portions. Seriously, I took it home and ate some as a snack later and for lunch today. The orange chicken had a nice crunch, not soggy or overly spicy. The rice was sticky and fluffy and the egg rolls were crunchy and full. We decided to try it after discovering Yaku was gone. The price was nice, $7.99 for the rice and 3 entrees, but the cheap pricing showed in the selection and quality of the food. Everything was luke warm, at best, and makes me think the steam tables were not working. Hopefully doesn't result in a case of food poisoning :-( I got the pork and onions, which was really onions with 2-3 peppered up pork pieces, the chicken and broccoli, which was bland but not horrible, and the orange chicken, which was very bland - no sweetness nor spice. The rice was cooked perfectly, at least. My partner got the same two first dishes, and his pork and onions was even more onions and less pork. He also got the pork and tofu, which actually had no pork at all. The tofu was gelatinous and just plain gross. We were shocked to learn that this was a second location of the restaurant in BCS Asian Mart, which we'd heard nothing but rave reviews about. That reputation alone *might* get me to try them again once they are opened enough to actually have menus and the operation is more polished, but for now, would definitely NOT recommend. read more

This place is really great for lunch if you want something quick. Lunch is a 3 entree with rice box for $8. Their entrees have no labels so if you're unfamiliar with Chinese dishes you'll either have to trust your intuition, ask what things are, or look at what other people are ordering. If you don't want to take any chances with what you're ordering don't go here, but otherwise it's a really good option for getting a big lunch quickly and close to campus. read more

Terrible service and tasteless food. Those five words perfectly explain my experience from eating at this restaurant. Never in my life have I had such bland and tasteless Mongolian beef which came out to be $10. Hell, even the mediocre and bland food at Panda Express has more flavor, spices, and edibleness when it comes to their food. The fact Panda Express is better than a restaurant trying to portray themselves as Quality Chinese restaurant is already a cause for concern for this review. Trying to finish their Mongolian beef was literally the closest thing to self torture one can do if they aren't a masochist. I've had more pleasure watching CNN, working out until passing out, and just plain having to work for a week on end THAN eating their food. From someone who can eat almost any food without complaint, I have never had the displeasure of throwing fresh food out!! A problem I could tell from the lack of flavor was just the fact that they forgot to add Sesame oil a KEY ingredient in almost all Asian food. I wish I can get a refund but the fact that the people working here don't speak English and had to translate my order along with how much it costs from English to Chinese, well you can just say good luck. Since time and money are precious resources I beg all those who read this review to use what little time and money you got and NEVER come here. Is this really the same as the original? What I had (to go) was indistinguishable from Panda Express: not interesting, bland, cheap quality ingredients. It was fast, and it was cheap. Just like Panda Express. Really quite stunned at how different this place is from the other one. Apparently its popular with the local Asian community, but for the life of me I can't figure out why. Maybe there is a secret menu (I didn't see a menu, just a buffet line), or maybe I just ordered the wrong things. If you like rice, you'll get roughly twice the amount served at the other place. Someone behind the counter will hand you a to go box with approximately one pound of rice in it, and then, depending on what you ask for, will put about two tablespoons of veggies and protein on top. No bueno. Glad I gave it a go, but will stick to the original. read more

I would have come back at 2pm or later to order the delicious Shrimp Lo Mein and Chicken Egg Rolls but I'm so glad I didn't have to wait. I'm sorry for any trouble I had caused and I am grateful for everyone's understanding. The Shrimp Lo Mein and Chicken Egg Rolls will provide a delicious feast for days to come. I may even try the lunch menu next time! The prices for the lunch options are great and the food did look quite scrumptious, but I just wanted those dinner items that time around. Not sure why this location has so many fewer reviews than on other review platforms, so I figured I'd give them one here. We ordered Mongolian beef and Sesame chicken for dinner and it was cooked fresh to order. It wasn't a peak time and the place was still very busy, so that was a good sign. The food came out promptly, but not super fast since it was cooked fresh. The sesame chicken was a little light on sauce, but had amazing flavor and was in nicely crisp bite size pieces, unlike the large chunks found at some other places. The Mongolian beef had a good spice to it and an healthy amount of sauce and vegetables, all cooked extremely well and complimenting the tender beef well. They both came with sticky white rice by default which was nice, and I usually don't have much to say about rice, but it was nice fluffy with a good firmness to it. I came to Shun De Mom on August 24, bought lunch, and after the transaction was done, I casually asked the cashier if there was still a use for the punch card (buy 10 meals, get 1 free) that I still had from Yaku, the prior restaurant at this location. The cashier said they were allowing customers to turn in their Yaku punch cards for a free meal. When I returned last week to redeem this offer, the cashier (a different person) had not heard of this offer, so he asked the manager. The manager, cashier, and one other employee spoke among themselves in a foreign language in front of me for a few moments, and then the manager refused to honor the offer. I told the manager that one of his employees said I could turn in the Yaku punch card for a free meal. He answered that the employee must have been wrong because they had never offered such a deal. If that is the case, why did they have a dish with a bunch of used Yaku punch cards next to the cash register? To be fair, their food was good on my first visit, but this kind of treatment (speaking in another language so I can't understand, and then refusing to honor their word) is unacceptable. read more
