I've stopped going to Thai Thai because I'm sick of the wait and poor service. So I am on a quest around town to find a suitable replacement. Unfortunately, I don't think that Siam Square is it. I went back to Siam Square because a few years ago, a friend threw a party here and I recall it being pretty good. But now that I've gone back, I feel like I didn't miss anything. We tried the pad thai, the green curry, the papaya salad, and the salt and pepper calamari. I enjoyed the calamari the most. I was disappointed with the pad thai - it was too sweet. My dinner companion was so-so about the green curry. So the quest continues...and the previous reviewer was right. There is too much elephant decor, but I suppose it adds to the restaurant's character and its "authenticity." *Note: They're open later than most - if you must have Thai food after 9pm (when most places close). read more

EXCELLENT Great atmosphere and authentic decor... Thailand in Ann Arbor. Although the Victory Inn parking lot looks less-than-appealing, once you walk through the Siam Square doors, you forget about it. I live in New York City so I am fairly picky about restaurants, but this place would be successful anywhere. It's just too bad it's so inconspicuously located. The food is outstanding. Fresh and tasty. We went on a Saturday night and the place was crowded (but not too crowded!) I went with my boyfriend and it was a great place for a date. We started with the wonton soup, which was made with lots of veggies (pleasant surprise) came in a really cool bowl with a flame underneath to keep it warm. We also ordered the "fresh rolls" (not fried, GREAT alternative to the greasy kind of spring roll if you're looking for something a little lighter). We then shared the Thai fried rice and the Spicy Basil Chicken. The sauce on the chicken was unforgettable, although if you're spicy-sensitive, you should order it mild (medium was a tiny bit hotter than I would prefer). Dessert was a mango sticky rice (very good, but ask for it without the white sauce), and fried ice cream. I had never seen fried ice cream before, but I will definitely order it next time. Really underwhelmed. I didn't mind the location and the service was good, but the food was so subpar. There was also no duck at all that night, not sure if that's usual or just happens. Chicken pad thai (2/5) - I would recommend everyone against getting pad thai here. Not only did it not taste like pad thai, but it really didn't have any flavors at all. The texture was soggy and card board tasting at the same time. I was so sad. I don't think I've ever thought a pad thai could be like this. Even the chicken was bland and dry. Just avoid this. Pad Ped (3.5/5) - Stirfry vegetables in red curry sauce. It was decent, which makes me think that maybe I should have just gone all curry for my meal. I think this was average and pretty standard. Cannot say it's superb, but if you come at least this will be decently good. Seafood noodle soup (3/5) - Not usually my go-to for a thai place, but I was feeling sick and really wanted some noodle soup. This soup is pretty decent, a little heavy on the celery taste. In general, it tasted like a good instant noodle soup. They were generous with the seafood, but the calamari was a little bit on the fishy side. However, the shrimps and scallops were solid, and they gave you a ton of noodles. I would not voluntarily come back here. However, if you had to come I would go for the curry dishes and skip the pad thai altogether. read more

Siam Square has tasty food, though it doesn't *thrill* me. Here's why I like it: The restaurant, itself, is kitschy and feels sweet to eat in. The service is fine (lots of cold water when you want it). The food, while not the best Thai food I've had, is also not the worst (not by far!). Here's why I'm not thrilled: The food doesn't wow me. I've eaten three dishes there, myself, and tried three others. Each time I thought, "Hmm.. That's nice," but it doesn't taste as I expect it to after eating Thai food from lots of other restaurants (including Marni Thai, which I'd rank higher than this, though MT is more expensive). An incident. We ordered online. We order from Siam Square, who gives the food to straight2yourdoor, who brings it to us. Only, when we get the food 45 minutes later, we see that one dish is entirely wrong. I'd ordered a chicken noodle dish, and got a beef rice dish. I don't know if this falls on the restaurant or delivery company. Anyway, I call Siam Square who handles it very well. They say they'll immediately make me a new dish of what I'd ordered. I ask them to make a new dish of what my boyfriend had ordered, as well, since by the time it got to us--presumably in another 45 minutes--his would be cold. They agreed without hesitation. We got both 30-40 minutes later (though the straight2yourdoor driver, a different one this time, was very disorganized and called us to get directions to our place!). So, all in all, I like this place. I might even like it a lot! In Ann Arbor, I'll be quite happy to keep eating here as my go-to Thai. It's affordable and nice. Siam Square was an experience so thoroughly disappointing that it finally convinced me to create a Yelp account just to warn others to stay away. I haven't been this let down since Trump won the presidency. I should have just taken my $24 in cash, dipped it in curry sauce and eaten that instead, as that would have been more edible and enjoyable than what I received for dinner. It seems that a lot of my criticisms can be corroborated by other users, as I've seen others complain of the same things. I picked up an order of Pad Thai, Pad See Ewe, and spring rolls for myself and my girlfriend. This was a take-out order. My issues: ++ The wait: Seems a lot of folks had this issue. Called in and was told it'd be ready in 20 minutes - pretty typical and perfectly acceptable. Got there around that mark, and had to wait almost a half hour in their lobby for the order. I understand things can get backed up and that '20 minutes' is an estimate that may be more or less accurate, but come on. Even worse - there were several others waiting for me in increasingly awkward anticipation for their orders, and based on other reviews, it seems that this is business as usual for them (didn't seem so busy inside to justify the wait). ++ The service: Young dude at the counter was perfectly nice, but they should have commented more on the wait and apologized profusely for it, perhaps by offering a small coupon. ++ The food: This is the big stinker. You have a craving for Thai food, you're super hungry, and you've waited through this long ordeal, it's miserable outside and you just want to finally be curled up on the couch. Maybe after all of this, it'll be worth it because the food was prepared with care and competency that will make everything better. Big surprise, the food was insultingly subpar. The egg rolls were actually okay compared to the entrees. The egg rolls seemed like your standard frozen generic eggrolls, which were lukewarm but edible. However, the entrees were beyond unacceptable. The first issue was the dryness. These noodles were dryer than the surface of Mars. They were devoid of moisture, which made for a terrible texture and not at all what you'd expect from savory Thai noodles. The second issue was the flavor. What I received could barely be sold as Pad Thai. There was no flavor. Just nada. I'm actually surprised that Pad Thai could be so devoid of the distinct tastes you'd expect to pick up on in this popular staple of Thai cuisine, but they managed to pull it off. Instead, they masked it with unbearable levels of spice. I promise it wasn't an issue of me not being able to handle my spice (I got the Medium level), but rather the result of trying to hide the fact that they left out the things that make Pad Thai what it is. I wish I took pictures, but just imagine dry, rubbery noodles with too little sauce that don't taste anything remotely to how it should. The other entree was similar, but the Pad Thai was the worst offender. ++ The order: I asked for no sprouts in my Pad Thai, and there were a few sprouts. Not a huge biggie, but it's just representative of a general lack of care and attention. This made more apparent by the fact there was an angry customer who returned towards the end of my wait who had received the wrong order. I'm sympathetic that those slip ups sometimes happen, but it just ended everything on a sour note. Godspeed to that poor man - I hope you got your order fixed! ++ Location: This isn't even something I would normally comment on, as I understand different businesses can afford better locations while some simply cannot. However, I was so cranky by the time I left that I might as well pile on an extra criticism. Hard to find and weirdly attached to a small hotel off the highway. That's all I've got. After a few bites at home, we decided this evil must banished to the dark depths of the dumpster. I accepted that it was worth my sanity to have the $24 wasted than it was to call them and complain and try and remedy the experience. It was too salty for my case. It was 7.95 for a small bowl of salty curry. Definitely not impressive. The place itself was very totally cute and chic. I really love the decoration of the place and booths. Came to Siam Square for lunch on the recommendation of a friend. It was hard to find! The entrance is off the lobby of a seedy by the hour looking motel on the south west corner of Washtenaw and 23. There are few signs advertising the restaurant. Once we entered the restaurant, we waited to be seated, as advised, and waited and waited. Finally I went inside and found a bewildered "bookkeeper" sitting at a booth with folders and papers and cell phone in hand. He waved us to sit anywhere. We did. This was 12:30. By 12:35 no server had greeted us. No water. No menu. We got up and made our way out passing numerous diners eagerly enjoying their lunches. There at the welcoming station sat the "bookkeeper" staring at us. No words. No food. Off we went through the seedy lobby to Bangkok Express! read more

This place use to be amazing. Great price, fresh, and fantastic customer service was what I had come to expect. It seems that there has been a change over in both workers and ownership, and this ship is sinking fast. Prices raised by at least 20%, with a slight reduction in portion size to boot. Rude customer service both on the phone and in person. Picking up food at the stated time, and waiting 10 minutes to even talk to someone to ask for your order. My most favorite was today, when the woman argued that I did not order my food. I will be finding a new spot pronto, although it breaks my heart. I really like ordering takeout from here. Their crab rangoons, potato curry triangles, and chicken wontons are all delicious appetizers. Their wonton soup is unique, as the stuffing in the wontons is made of chicken and the noodles are a little thinner than I am accustomed to. It's really good, though, and I love the little green onions in it. For entree, I love their stir fry with chicken, baby corn, carrot, onion, and mushroom. They are really flexible and will add or take out items to/from the stir fry, so you can customize it to your taste. i add cashews to mine. read more

Meh. The decor is "interesting" if you're into the sort of messy, kitschy, over-stuffed Pan-Asian thing. I could see this as a good place to bring kids as they'd probably think it was really cool--I don't mean that as a slight either! On our server's first visit to our group of 6 we were not quite ready to order, so she left to give us more time. "More" time was probably 20 minutes or maybe even 30. We almost walked out. A different server came to take our order and he was very informative and efficient, happily splitting our check and letting one of my friends know that the dish she ordered was particularly spicy. The food came very quickly. I started with the shrimp spring rolls which were incredibly fresh and delicious and came with a great peanut sauce. The Pad Thai, however, was no good--wish I would have read these reviews first! It was a HUGE portion, though; I split it with my husband and was very full. Also, I like that their bottled domestics are under $4. Turns out they add 18% gratuity for parties of 5 or more, which seems like a very low number. Given our poor service in the beginning I probably wouldn't have tipped 18% on my own, so that's frustrating. All in all, I would come here again to try something different, but I don't think I'll be rushing back anytime soon. read more

Out of all of the places in Ann Arbor this is one of my quick lunch spots to grab some curry! Casual Atmosphere and typically not to busy it's normally a pretty quick in and out. They will make your curry at whatever level heat you prefer and manage to do it right. You want spicy curry you can get it that way. All to often I order something hot and it comes mild, not here! They also serve Thai ice tea and it's delicious and goes perfectly with a spicy curry. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food that you get as well. I've just be upfront and say that the food was oh so good, but the service was just terrible. The gf and I came here on a weekday night and were greeted by...no one. One of the waitresses finally noticed us standing at the front and led us to a table, but it would only be a preview of the service we got for the night. We not only had to wait 10 minutes to flag down a waitress to put in our order, but the food took over 30 minutes to finally reach our table. And, when we wanted to get the check, it took us another 10 minutes to get a waitress to notice us. You'd think that the most important time in a dining experience is when a customer wants the check, but clearly this was not of any significance to this place. I'll end my rant by saying there were likely only two waitresses that were obviously over-worked and it is somewhat understandable given that perhaps it was a busier night than usual. With all that being said, the food was pretty amazing. The chicken eggrolls were good although a bit greasy and honestly overpriced at $4 for just two small eggrolls (would not order in the future). The main dishes however really allowed this place to shine. The roast duck curry was in a red curry and full of flavor with large chunks of duck. The bamboo shoots added a nice consistency with the eggplant, green pepper and pineapple. What really stood out were the cherry tomatoes that gave way to a sweet gush of tomato juice. The crispy roast pork was equally good and bathed in a wonderful sweet dark sauce that was amazing on rice. The pork was also nicely fried and went well with the basil and peppers. Once again, this would be 3 1/2 stars... We've eaten here a few times and unfortunately their food isn't very consistent. It's always freshly cooked, but there have been times that the dishes we ordered were excellent and then times when they have been ok. The one thing we always get is the crunch pork dish (I don't know the name, but there is a picture of it in their menu). I was surprised when I pulled up to the place, the restaurant is actually adjacent to a horribly looking rundown motel.....BUT THE FOOD WAS GOOD! We ordered deep fried soft shell crab, green curry, pad thai and mango w/sticky rice for dessert. The soft shell crab was fresh, the meat was tender and sweet. The dishes had lots flavors. ANOTHER BUT, if you are looking for good service, this is NOT the place. I think the server was one of the owners, she was rude and very unhappy. No greetings, no smiles, almost threw the dishes on our table. So, enjoy the good food, don't expect good service ~ which can save you some money on tips. read more

Wildly inconsistent. This should be 5 stars. We used to eat here a lot. Probably a dozen times total. Service was either indifferent or friendly with no in between from the staff at the front to the waitstaff. Generally we've had good service but the indifference does stand out too especially at times when there have been errors in our order or bill. The flavor of the food is delicious and mostly portion sizes were large, although with recent visits it seemed like they had gotten smaller. We brought a guest here who was from abroad and he said it was the best Thai food he had had recently so that's one point to mention. I like the ambiance a lot. It's beautifully decorated (hopefully other reviewers have posted pictures) and calming (surprisingly calming, since it is connected to a hotel). The problem is that we've gotten mixed answers on how suitable the food is for vegetarians. If i were to get a consistent answer on items such as fish oil or broths and am able to feel comfortable that the food is suitable for vegetarians I'll return. I do also hope that they expand the vegetarian options. The red, green, and yellow curries and the pad thai and the masamom and fried tofu are delicious and have a nice mix of sweet and tangy or sour flavor. However, the menu seems like it has been the same for a long time. Why not introduce more vegetable dishes or more tofu dishes for those who want alternatives? read more

Awesome hole-in-the-wall restaurant. I actually had thought it looked too sketchy and passed it, and then today, a co-worker recommended this as the best thai. I went and it was GREAT. Do not judge a book by its cover! The server was very attentive and nice, and I asked for *spicy* penang curry. Boy did I get spicy. It was almost too spicy. I LOVED IT. The portion was a little small, but it was lunch time, so pretty inexpensive. I will definitely go back! I have finally found a good thai restaurant. Finally found my thai place in michigan. Dont let the hotel fool you this place is incredible! Its a shame I have to drive an hour to get it but its well worth it. Really good! Unexpectedly cool inside. Nice wait staff. Best Thai in Ann Arbor. Was not expecting much based on its location inside of a rundown hotel, but a co-worker raved about the place. I called in to make an order of masamon. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes but it was done closer to 10! It was only 12$ for our order but it was enough to feed my husband and me. I usually go for a mild sauce but opted for medium spicy this time. And it was delicious! The best masamon I've ever had! I lived so close to this place. I can't believe I'd never gone here before! This restaurant has greatly improved over the years, there was a time when the service was extremely poor and I stopped going completely, but there service and food has gotten much better and I enjoy going to this place again. Great food. The atmosphere was keen, and no new-age jazz! I went simple and had the Thai Fried Rice with vegetables and asked the server to have the chef use his preference of spice. He warned that it would be very spicy. It was perfect. The spice was there but didn't overpower the delicate thai veggies. Well made and tasty. My fiancé's mother had a dish with peanut sauce, chicken, and veggies. M4, perhaps. She'd never had thai and ordered without spice. She enjoyed it, but didn't touch her rice.
