Sichuan Noodles is actually a misleading name because they have so much more than noodles - in fact, I think noodles are probably some of their less highlighted items! Located in the Dun Huang Plaza in Chinatown, close to all the boba/ dessert places with plenty of parking in the open parking lot and the 2 garages. This place has been my favorite Sichuan style restaurant for years. Exactly how you would imagine a classic no BS mom and pop Chinese restaurant would be, traditional Chinese style interior, friendly but basic level service, complementary Chinese hot tea, and owners kids hanging out in the back. Now the food... somehow this place always hit the spot and reminds me of China. Unlike a lot of the Sichuan restaurants in Houston with fancy plates and fusion twist, this place taste like someone from Sichuan is in the back doing all the cooking for you. We've tried this place only once so far, in May 2023. We ordered dan dan noodles - one of my benchmarks items. The portion was decent, but not exactly large. It tasted ok. There wasn't much of a peanut flavor, and the 'mala' taste was much more pronounced. The rest of the items were that we ordered were 'ok' as well: youtiao (Chinese donut), soup buns, and salty buns. Handmade Scallion Cake - reasonable, they are able to make it thin or thick. My husband and I tried Sichuan Noodles for the first time on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was pretty busy, and we were seated at a corner table (a bit tight). We ordered scallion pancakes as an appetizer and three entrees: spicy crispy chicken, mapo tofu, and crispy tripe. Did not order noodles. Sidebar: I want to say that I hate their tables. There are no table legs, just a really bulky column supporting the table, and it's very uncomfortable. Whoever chose this style of table was not considering people with long legs, or legs in general. There was a bit of a wait for the food. The pancakes came out first, and they were just okay. They were kind of floppy and undercooked. The entrees then came out, along with two ungenerous bowls of rice. Look, we ordered three entrees. Why not just give us a big bowl of rice? At least the entrees were good. The spicy crispy chicken is exactly that--spicy and crispy (although not very dynamic in terms of flavor). The tripe is excellent; super crispy and flavorful. The mapo tofu is excellent, too, although it is mis-advertised. I dare anyone to find any bit of pork in this dish (it's supposed to have pork). Service is okay. You don't have just one server responsible for your table. I would've wanted the servers to circulate a bit more. Mostly they stayed at the counter. This is a hidden gem for their classic Chinese breakfast!! It's been hard to find a place for good salted tofu pudding, but this place does it really well. Also some of the best dan dan noodles I've had are here. Their you tiao (fried dough) is also great. Parking is plentiful but usually full on weekends; there's two parking garages if surface lots are full. Interior is old school Chinatown and quaint. Houston is sleeping on this place. The simple names Spicy Sichuan Chicken is one of the best things I've ever eaten. The Sichuan peppercorn spice was pure finesse on their tender chicken. Have been on a search for a replacement for the recently departed Chengdu Taste. This is the current favorite for Sichuan food in Houston. The fried fish was amazing, the red oil dumplings were the best I have ever had. I would pass on the eggplant with garlic sauce, it was too vinegar heavy. This is my husband and my third time eating here. The first time, we had a bit of a problem communicating our order with a couple of extra requests. This time, we brought a couple who spoke Cantonese AND Mandarin and had no problem asking questions about the dishes and ordering! The food was of generous portions and very good. They're not just any peppers, they're the type to numb your tongue and tingle your lips! The fish was okay but it was drowned in oil. And last but not least, the tripe was shredded so thin that you won't even know you're eating tripe. It will be difficult if you don't speak Chinese but just point to the menu and it'll be fine. Sorry not too sure because I honestly came for one thing and one thing only, the dan dan noodles. After reading the reviews for it I had high hopes. However, they fell kind of flat when I finally received mine. They come out fresh and hot, spicy or not spicy but personally I like a thinner texture of noodle.
