Sometimes the big showy is a red flag. Good food, yet nothing that would beg me to return. Pizza, good by Middletown standards, coming from someone who lives in New Haven. Eggplant Frites tasty but as you get to the layers underneath the top they become soggy and oil soaked. Too much lavender honey which is a nice compliment but a little can go a long way. Brussels spout dish was good. Again...food was good but nothing I would run back to. We sat in the "wine bar" side which is nicely decorated in "hey, I'm ultra Italian goomba" style. They're just missing the statue of an angel pissing into a fountain. Piano playing great music which is a nice touch to the ambiences. Misha? Commands a well run bar, yet the small touches that separate a wine bar from a bar that has a ton of name brand wines need attention. Water glasses should be filled continuously until the patron states that they are done. Wine glasses, if a bottle of wine is purchased, anytime the server walks by should automatically refill/pour a glass. In other words, the glass should never be empty. Wine pricing is all over the place. $22/6oz pour of an other wise $20 retail bottle of white wine is kinda ludicrous, but bills have to be paid and food costs are high even at the wholesale level. I get that. Otherwise, nice place to try out once or meet up with friends while out in Middletown. My cautionary tale would be, watch out that you don't become another Cava in Bristol. read more

Decided to go out to lunch with my friend. He is a chef and said this Sicily, and their coal food pizza is wonderful. It's funny as neither of us ended up ordering pizza. I will say this, the pizza comes in one size, no slices here! It's a fairly large place. With huge TVs that were showing opening day and other sports. I think this would be a good place to watch your favorite team with some class thrown in. We sat at the bar and perused the menu. Both of us being foodies we took a long time deciding on drinks to start. I ended up deciding on a blueberry cider at the suggestion of our bartender/server. She was right on the money. I really enjoyed it. For lunch, my friend chose the porcetta grinder. It was FILLED with meat and delicious greens. It had a nice kick of spices. I chose the Figgy Piggy. A grilled cheese with fig jam, caramelized onions, and bacon! I swapped out cheddar for the mozzarella. It's totally delicious. It came with their version of fries. Which are these fat, curly seasoned potatoes. Tasted GREAT! The portions are good size, and I had enough for a snack at home. read more

Tonight I attempted to dine here with a friend that I hadn't seen in over 10 years and unfortunately the night ended in turmoil. When we arrived there was a 30 minute wait, which was no problem because I could see they were busy. I sat at the bar and had a glass of wine until our table was available. We were seated about 25 minutes later & ordered our food about 10 minutes after being seated. Our appetizers came out within 20 minutes. When we were seated there was a family seated next to us that ended up leaving because the wait was too long & they hadn't gotten their food so they asked for everything to go. I saw them speak with the manager and they were given a complimentary dessert as a make good. Another couple comes a while later and orders drinks and food. Their food and drinks come out before our entrees. It's at that point that I look at the time and realize that about 90 minutes have passed and we still have not received our food. We start looking for our waitress, Gabby but I couldn't find her so I went to the hostess to see about our meals. She remembers seating us and thought it was strange that the table next to us got their food first. She heads to the back and comes back to our table with our entrees and Gabby is with her. I express my grievance that it took nearly 2 hours to receive entrees and the table next to us had received their meal before us and I would like our bill discounted for the delay. She immediately has an attitude and asks me "why" and states "they ordered a pizza, it only takes 5 minutes." I responded that my friend ordered a salad and that doesn't require cooking so that wasn't an excuse. Her and I have an unpleasant exchange, she was defensive and I told her she shouldn't be a bitch to a customer. She told me she was one of the owners and I said if that's the case it's unfortunate that an owner would speak to customer in that manner. She then reveals she's 23 & not the owner & I rebutted well at least we've learned that she's a liar. I asked to speak with a manager and at that point a girl named Sabrina comes over & tells me she can give me a gift card. I informed her that I do not live here, I'm in town visiting & after being treated that way by my server I have no intention on returning to the restaurant & would prefer a percentage off of our bill. There was a lot of back & forth & Sabrina called me entitled & implied that I just wanted something taken off my bill. At this point we are in a heated exchange and a third girl comes over to try and deescalate the situation. I asked for our food to go and to speak to another manager. While we are packing up our food, another older woman that I later learned is the owner Maria, comes to our table and is yelling at me saying I should be ashamed because I made my waitress cry in the bathroom and I said that was unfortunate. Her and I had an exchange & she threatens to call the cops on me if I didn't pay the bill. Now let me be clear -- I never once said I wouldn't pay my bill. I didn't pack up my things, I didn't even have my food covered so I was unsure where the accusation that I wasn't going to pay my bill came from. It truly felt like we were being profiled as two black women. As I'm trying to explain everything to the second manager Sal, Sabrina & Maria are still there ganging up on my friend and I, yelling for me to give them my fucking card and that I need to fucking leave or they're going to call the cops. At this point Sabrina is being extremely aggressive to the point that a male staff member has to hold her back. My friend & I are no threat to anyone as we are seated in a corner booth, surrounded by a bunch of staff being attacked all because I asked for a percentage off of my bill after having to wait nearly 2 hours for pasta and a salad. I have been to many restaurants and have never in my life been treated like this before. I've since learned that they are all related so it's no surprise to see that behavior being condoned. One of the best places in Middletown Ct! Located on main st plenty of paid parking front and rear lots depending on time of day and week as lots are used for local court house. Some of the best pizza I have had outside New Haven ct it to mention the extensive drink / beer menu and daily specials and extensive food menu. Large space within dine in and small patio space out front but not in the sun under a large over hang make sure it's warm out. Service is always exceptional I have never been upstairs and mostly for lunch but they are expanding into space next door to make a large wine bar! Very casual not precocious so jeans are cool. Pizza is always amazing with numerous toppings .Kutcher is open so all activity can be observed . Had the chicken parm special in this day and to say huge is an understatement! He let us know he was prioritizing our order several times with the kitchen, but a big and long staying party kept on getting priority. Sadly, all 5 of our dishes were unsatisfactory. The spaghetti/meatballs(2), sauce tasted like copper and the meatballs were mushy and freezer burnt tasting. Chicken parm: pasta/sauce also tasted like copper, cutlet was ok. House salad was basic. Chicken stuffed with prosciutto, just no....i don't even know what the base was, plated very nicely but so many competing flavors that didn't work nicely. While waiting, Joey brought out bread and a spread of fresh garlic, peppers, celery, mushrooms. The bread, baked daily, was about the best I've inhaled this side of the Bronx. The spread was also delicious. Great amalgam of contrasting flavors. Star of the show was the Fig pie. Crust was thin, but not so thin that it couldn't hold its toppings (no blue pill needed). And the toppings produced a tsunami of flavors with each bite. And I learned that "speck" is not a piece of dust when on a pizza...it's a cold-cured, lightly-smoked ham or bacon, originally from northeastern Italy. The pie was chewy as well as gooey. A really cozy and intimate place if you choose to sit in the wine bar. They offer the full menu over at the wine bar and every pizza on the menu sounds incredible. The staff if fun and personable and helped make good decisions with every course. We split the gem salad with blackened chicken and the salad is plenty big to share but that chicken lives in my head rent free. So flavorful and juicy. But the pizza stole the show. We got the fig pizza and whatever cheese they use is some of the freshest I have ever had. I challenge you to have only one slice. Had the seasonal sangria which was peach flavored, it was National wing day so had their wings which were very good and filling. And because I was getting full I did a side salad. Mars is a terrific professional server and we sat near the open kitchen fascinated by the fresh ingredients and portion size of the meals being made by a team of pros. Pumpkin martinis were outstanding and the affogato (espresso finish) was delicious. Wow!! As someone who lives in New Haven, my standards for pizza are pretty high. I wasn't expecting to be blown away, but I was pleasantly surprised! The pizza was absolutely out of this world delicious. The ambiance was great, with plenty of space to spread out and ample seating upstairs that didn't require a reservation. We sat on a comfy couch near the bar with a view of the entire restaurant down below. The festive decorations, marble bar tops, brick walls, and creative lighting gave off an upscale vibe that makes this place a great option for date nights or meetups with family and friends. This is a very lively Resturant that is always pretty full. It's great for cocktails and or dinner. The bar has such a variety of liquors and the bartenders are very creative. We were feeling like fall cocktails so we have a pumpkin spice martini and a toasted almond martini. The servings are quite generous which I believe it will be better to share they are that large. You can get two to three meals out of a serving. Everything is presented beautifully and the wait staff is so friendly and accommodating. Walking up to Sicily gives me a pretty good vibe. Today it had a tiki theme outside. Inside it was hopping! Every seat at the bar was taken. We were greeted quickly and seated at a high top in the bar area. Dana our server was great. Attentive and fun. Joe, one of the managers, checked on us as well. The mixture that came with it would be great with garlic salt and fresh garlic. I ordered the eggplant Parmesan spaghetti dinner. The sauce, pasta and cheeses were really fresh. I expected the eggplant to be crispy but it wasn't. It was still good in between the cheeses and sauce. My friend ordered the shrimp casino pizza, it had bacon so I couldn't try it (I'm allergic to bacon). She loved it so I ordered one without bacon to go. We ordered the doughnuts and it came out flaming. The presentation was impressive. However the doughnuts were too thick and tasted like they had too much salt in the dough. They put sugar around them and I dipped one into the jelly and I wasn't impressed. My friend didn't like them. I took them to work today and my co-worker didn't like them so I wasted my money on those. I ended up throwing the rest away. I will go back I just don't get the doughnuts. I want to try the French fries when I return. They looked really good. A nice lady sitting next to me told me that they were really good. First visit here after a recommendation from a coworker and we loved it!! To start, the inside was beautiful and nicely decorated. We walked in to see a bunch of Christmas decorations, as well as Christmas music playing throughout the restaurant. It was around 4:30 on a Saturday and it was decently busy, but we were quickly sat. We were surprised to see the huge amount and variety of beers on tap - we both ordered one. For our entrees, we both had pizza. My friend ordered the pepperoni pizza with hot oil, which she really liked. She said the hot oil was spicy, but not overbearing. I ordered the Prosciutto di Parma & Salad pizza, which was delicious. The balsamic glaze complemented the savory aspects of the prosciutto and goat cheese very well, and it was topped with a generous portion of arugula to bring the entire pizza together. The pizzas we ordered were thin crust and cooked perfectly. Service was very good considering how busy it was in the restaurant as well. Only complaints are the layout of the restaurant - we came in the back and we were a little confused, since there is only takeout at the back and we had to walk through the entire restaurant to get to the host stand. We also were not aware what was upstairs - after sitting we heard people saying it was a lounge where you seat yourself. We would have preferred going up there, but there's always next time! The bathroom was also near the takeout area in a small hallway - it was hard to get there with the constant pedestrian traffic and there was only one stall, so a line quickly builds outside. I wish they could get their act together with to go orders. That is the primary reason for this update. Sicily has gone from new and cool to just plain trendy and poor quality. I've ordered my usual, polpetti a few times in the last couple years and every time it has been extremely subpar quality food. This is not the to-go drivers fault, I live 5 minutes away! And the last time they gave me a completely different item instead of the polpetti and it had pine nuts in it and I'm allergic. All on the happy hour menu. My husband said the meatball was the best he has ever had and he was even eating the eggplant fries and he doesn't like them usually! The eggplant had honey and cojita cheese. Then we got the cheese pizza which was $6 and it was plenty for 2 people and the flavor was sooo good! One of the best cheese pizzas I've ever had. Then we ordered dessert- it was my birthday and I really wanted the creme brûlée I saw on Instagram. It did not disappoint!! It was so good and I loveeee that they give you a bunch of strawberries. Most places just give one and hard to share. Honestly this is probably top 3 creme brûlée's I've had in my life and we get one every where they have it lol For drinks I just got the happy hour Pinot Grigio which was fine. In Week One of its existence, Sicily Coal Fired Pizza ("SCFP") is already in the upper echelon of Hartford/Middletown pizza restaurants. I first spied SCFP when I was sipping a cold brew across the street during the Memorial Day Parade. I immediately had a good feeling about SCFP because in my experience, good things usually follow places with "Coal Fired Pizza" in their name. Ever since then, I've been watching for the opening date, which was two days ago. I ordered a sausage pizza to go. I ate a couple pieces in my car so I could judge it at peak power. The pizzas seem to be one size, which I would describe as a generous classic Neapolitan size. The pizzas are priced accordingly. The thin crust is great. It's charred in the right places, and good chewy in the right places. The sauce seemed like a basic crushed tomato sauce, which I mean in the best possible way. No need to overthink the sauce on this style of pizza. The sausage and the mozzarella were both high quality. The pizza was cooked for the perfect amount of time so that the crust was just right and the toppings released their natural flavors. It seems I wasn't the only person to take notice of SCFP. On just its third day, business was jamming around 6:30 and the servers were hustling. I was told my pizza would be ready in 20 minutes when I called, and it was, which is a minor miracle given how busy they were. The inside is a combination of red brick, wood, tans and swirly red light fixtures. Nice, but nothing too fancy. SCFP also serves pasta, apps, salads, burgers, sandwiches and a few entrees. In this regard, SCFP's menu is broader than I would have expected and it will be hard to do all of those things at a high level. In terms of pizza, I already like SCFP better than many big name places in the area. I assume things will just keep getting better with more experience. Note: To best enjoy SCFP's pizza, I would eat there or very soon after picking it up. I think it would lose some of its best features if it travels in a box for too long. read more

I love this place! I have been here many times, and it never disappoints. There is an open kitchen and dining area, as well as a relatively large bar. There is also an extra bar upstairs, where they have a DJ some nights. Given the high ceilings and large crowd, this place can get loud. There isnalso limited outside seating. When here, I almost always get pizza, which tells you how good it is. When dining with others, they have gotten other menu items. Everyone always says the food is on point. There is a full bar and specialty drink menu too! I can't say enough good things about this place. Ok, I have to admit, I haven't been in Middletown in probably 15 years. I used to visit and remember the downtown being kind of a neglected space. So, when I went to visit with my brother who went to school here, we were very pleasantly surprised to see both the state of the downtown and to have lunch at this fine place. We were fairly quick in and out so we didn't have a lot of different items. But we did get two pizzas. One was the prosciutto di Parma pizza with its namesake on there, goat, cheese, arugula, and a balsamic drizzle. Wow. The other was Cajun shrimp, bell pepper, caramelized, onion, and I don't remember what else. That was amazing as well. They had a very nice looking bar with a large selection. They also had a very wide variety of unique beers on tap. I tried the zero gravity Frankie and wanted to have many many more. They served a nice bread to warm you up that came with with tasted like a homemade gardineira. We were quickly seated, and service was attentive but not overbearing. It was may be a touch on the spendy side, but it felt like we got what we paid for. There was seating inside, what looked to be party space up top, and seating outside as well. Visited this establishment last night with a few friends for the first time. Friday night, sure it was packed, but it says a lot about the restaurant. Thankfully we reserved a table and got right in. The menu was huge, appetizers, soups, salads, burgers and of course pizza and pasta dishes. The pasta is homemade btw...The portions were enormous, and plated beautifully. Oh, and then there were the drinks, from 50 beers on tap, lots of wine choices and tons of margaritas to choose from. The service was like no other, Nicole was our waitress and was very helpful and knowledgeable with the menu, kudos to her! This has now become my favorite restaurant by far, great job guys! read more
