My husband and I decided to grab morning tea at this place this past Wednesday since it was close to our vacation rental. After we came in, it took some time before we were able to get the employee behind the counter to take our order (she was the only person making drinks and taking orders). After looking over the menu board, we ended up getting: Iced Chai Tea, Gigante, $4.25 prior to tax- I requested for my drink to be made with non fat milk but made it with skim since they do not carry non fat milk. I was rather disappointed with me drink because it was just too sweet and also had an overkill amount of ice in it (please see my photos). I feel a bit cheated because there is less tea in my cup with so much ice. The drink was also grainy/ gritty but that is most likely due to the spices used to make this drink. Because my drink was just too sweet, I added water to dilute it's flavor. I was not happy with this drink and not worth the price. Sidamo Chai Leben, Gigante, $4.25 prior to tax- My husband ordered this drink hot. The employee had mentioned that it will take time to make this drink. She did not tell him how long. My husband was fine with it. But I was not expecting it to take 30 minutes. But my husband was fine with the wait. But I do want to mention if you are in a hurry or do not have time to wait, don't order this drink. Anyways, I thought this drink had too strong of a flavor of cardamon (although I like crardamon in my chai, this was just too much for me) and did not like the taste of this drink. Once one sees the well used Dietrich roaster in the front and the bags of roasted Ethiopian coffee it is clear one has arrived. We ordered a flat white and a long black. Some of the best we've had. The Ethiopian veggie plate was fine as well. And the staff is delightful. Highly recommend. read more

I think I have found my favorite coffee place walking distance from my apartment. I even came twice today. I first walked in during lunch time and ordered a grilled chicken. That has easily been in the top 5 grilled chicken sandwich I have liked the most in my life. It was delicious. The bread and tomatoes felt fresh and the chicken was well seasoned. Then I came back again because I had to try to coffee. The coffee was strong enough to wake me up. The coffee cake was the only item I believe needs some improvement. The blueberries in the cake felt fresh but the cake itself felt like it had been there for some time. I will come back when it is recently done. I'm sure it will be epic. read more

Sidamo, what can I say about this place? Upon my arrival last Fall in 2019, also my first time ever in DC to visit my best friend, I was rather exhausted and sleep-deprived after a long bus ride. I looked up to find a coffee shop near Union Station, and found Sidamo. At the time, it was packed! Kenfe, the owner, took my order and also noticed my sweatshirt, so he told me the story about people in Ethiopia during his youth, some 40 years ago, swapping their sweatshirt for a coffee; I laughed and I think that alone also made him laugh. I secluded myself into the corner with my latte in a chipped cup looking like a zombie :), which didn't stop Kenfe from coming by and striking up a conversation, then the dialogues went from our origins, places we've both been to in Europe, to bread & cheese... A couple months later, I decided to pack up and move across the country from California to DC; I'd attribute a big part of that decision to the chipped cup of latte, the welcoming vibe at Sidamo, and the insightful interaction with Kenfe. I later developed admiration for the main barista here, Fonseca, after I'd settled in a house just a few blocks away and inevitably become a familiar face. :) As much as I love lattes, a simple pour-over coffee or chai laben (Kenfe's recreation of Lebanese style chai) are more of their specialties. Kenfe roasts the beans, all from Ethiopia, every other day, so make sure to grab a bag (my favorite is yirgacheffe) on your way out. Don't let the language barriers keep you from forming a genuine connection with people from different cultural backgrounds, because you might miss out on some invaluable insights that are usually hard to come by when you're barely half awake and tucked into your comfort zone, like me. ;) I've learned our differences are what make us so similar, as we can be so different in the same way. Highly recommend the Ethiopian coffee experience for 1-3 people. It is served on a tray, complete with burning incense. The coffee was rich, bold, and delicious. It came with steamed milk, raw sugar, and a slice of coffee cake. I have never seen anything like this! Pretty decent for a coffee shop. Ethiopian owned and serves Ethiopia espresso. Paid 6 bucks for a biscotti & a medium vanilla latte with almond milk. The pastries were self served, which isn't an issue- definitely saves time for the barista so kudos to that. The biscotti I'm sure is outsourced, but it was very tasty! As for the latte, unfortunately it did not have a significant taste. I barely tasted the vanilla. I'm not sure if the flavors just weren't that pronounced or if it was due to the extreme temperature of that latte. I could barely enjoy it. Milk this steamed is typically burned. All in all, it's a quaint shop with a few tables and seats. I would come here if I wanted to do some work or just wanted to take a break for a moment. Sidamo is cute and reminiscent of the 90s/00s inside. It has ample seating and seems like a special community spot. I ordered a grande mango hot tea and a teff ginger cookie. The cookie was fine (pretty hard), and you have to use tongs to take it out of a cookie jar, which I thought was pretty quaint. The tea is overpriced ($3.75) and the bag they use is packed with tea -- so much so that the tea is bitter. It's fine -- it's tea! -- but I wasn't overly impressed. I literally found this place randomly as we were waiting on food to go from a nearby restaurant. I will keep this short and sweet. The coffee....delicious! I had a white chocolate mocha. It wasn't too sweet. It was perfect! The coffee tasted fresh. Now...it was a cute mom and pop feeling space with a few seating areas. My friends are a bit polarized about this place - some love, some don't. The reviews look the same. I count myself in the love category. Maybe because I really like Ethiopian coffee - it has a depth and richness that I enjoy and it is consistently served hot and fresh and with a smile here (unlike the other, newer Maple Lawn coffee/cake place where I had slow service and cold coffee). I like the quaint local vibe indoors of Sidamo. I haven't tried any of the food, but I might eventually. Someone stopped me the other day in Maple Lawn to ask where this place was, and they couldn't remember the name but I guessed it was Sidamo from the description of the coffee! Reminded me I haven't written any reviews for ages. So here it is - my take is if you like coffee and you're in Maple Lawn - try Sidamo. We were looking for a quick breakfast and stumbled upon here. This place shines when it comes to the coffee. The mocha was amazing, it was small mocha and legit. However, when it comes to the sandwich, they sort of fell short for me. I don't know if it's what I ordered and that it wasn't their specialty or they just decided to cut costs as far as the food goes. I guess that could possibly be the reason why though. Keep the high costs on the good coffee and tea and smaller on the food. So, I ordered two sandwiches, a sausage egg and cheese croissant and a bacon egg and cheese croissant. The sandwiches were okay, nothing really special. I mean look at it, it was basically eggs, that were cooked, or heated up, and then topped with kraft cheese. I wish though, if they used good cheddar or something like that it would taste so much better. I think that this sandwich sort of reminded me of those frozen croissant sandwiches you buy, you know Jimmy Dean's style except a little bigger. Anyways, this place is just okay for me. Sidamo is one of H St Corridor's OGs since before its boom with all the changes. When I first came here years ago, it's surroundings were pretty empty. Now it looks like a shop that doesn't quite belong but I'm here to tell you to keep supporting them cuz they are a legit coffee and tea shop that needs to survive all economic changes. Not saying they're struggling but you never know what comes and goes with gentrification. While I'm one to enjoy physically going to a coffee shop, I couldn't today so I had to order through Yelp's Grubhub (even though I kinda live walking distance hehe). I noticed that the online menu doesn't state that I could get their different chai beverages iced so I called to confirm. I learned that they have the regular chai tea latte, a morning chai (which comes with espresso), and a Sidamo chai which is made with three different leaves. I wanted to get the Sidamo chai but figured I'd do that when I could a chance to come in person. So I opted for the morning chai. Over the phone I was told the small comes with a single shot and a medium comes with a double shot. However when I went to put in my order, there was only one option and it didn't state of it was small or medium. I think I got the medium maybe. I also forgot to say iced so I was stuck with a warm beverage, which normally is fine but my hormones and all wanted iced! Ugh. I wish they would update the menu to have iced as an option instead of saying it in the notes. Oh well, that's my b for forgetting. Nevertheless it was delicious. I was just sweating b*lls LOL. Aside from my caffeine fix, I ordered a mango smoothie and a sausage egg cheese bagel. All were scrumpdillilicious. Kid approved too. I must stress that Sidamo is not trying to get all hype type of business so don't come too excited then think it's overhyped. Just come through to support a good ol' local coffee and tea shop. While Bae and I were waiting for a food order we'd placed nearby we decided to walk down to Sidamo for a cup of coffee. I was a little concerned because the inside is small and, even with the 10 or so people inside, it seemed very congested to me. The coffee was ok, I had an American with a splash of almond milk. It did the job, but it was nothing to write home about unfortunately. I liked all of the art and pictures on the walls, but there was a lot of dust on them. Between that and the cramped quarters, I didn't want to linger inside for very long. As I said before, the coffee did it's job because I got the caffeine boost I was looking for. So I saw this episode of "Extreme Cheapskates" once(don't ask), where this lady buys a Starbucks Venti Latte every Sunday and places it in the fridge. For the next week or so she pours out a measured 3 ounces and heats it in the microwave before she heads to work. Here's my point with all this: Of course, she is bat crap cray and knows nothing about food safety, but she may be onto something. I am not cheap but I want to do this with Sidamo's caramel lattes, just because I live so far away from here that there is no way I could make it here on the regular. Imagine coming in every Sunday and grabbing a soy caramel latte for that day and one not on ice for the upcoming week. I need to put this plan into action. In my opinion, which seems to be backed up by several Yelpers, this is simply the best coffee in DC. I will forever be looking for an excuse to go here. Long wait at Toki? I will be hauling my butt the nine blocks here to grab a latte. I have shown up for many a lunch/dinner appointment on H street with a latte in my hand. The eclectic exterior drew us inside this Ethiopian coffee shop and I was so glad we ventured inside; what an experience! I've been a coffee connoisseur since my undergraduate days as an engineering student, and the mastery of Sidamo Coffee and Tea is truly a work of art. They import all of their beans directly from Ethiopia; the origination of coffea canephora, derived from the Robusta plant. The flavors of the coffee brewed there were spectacular. The aroma, the flavor, the taste; such perfection. I would highly recommend that you don't sully your amazing beverage with sugar or cream; consume it unadulterated to experience the flavor in it's purest form. If the owners are present, I would also take the opportunity to ask them about the process and history of coffee brewing in their native Ethiopia; there is a wealth of history and craft to absorb in parallel with your flavorful caffeine fix. After my second cup, I was torn between purchasing a bag of their roasted beans to grind and enjoy at home versus making a pilgrimage to Sidamo a daily ritual. read more

I was looking for a place with great coffee and space to get work done and I'm happy so say I found it at Sidamo's. Their specialty includes Ethiopian coffee and boy is it delicious. It's a cute little cafe with plenty of options to choose from. We weren't sure what we wanted, but wanted to try something new so we went with the Ethiopian Coffee Service for $9 between the two of us. When the barista brought over the coffee, we were expecting some kind of explanation about how to drink the coffee and perhaps a bit of cultural exchange, but she simply placed the tray down and walked away. I didn't realize that the coffee would be served with what seemed to be clarified butter. It looks like there are many regulars in there and I would like to return to try some more of their items and attend one of their events over the weekend. Unfortunately, two of the tables we tried were quite wobbly, and a third table another guest was using seemed wobbly as well. The owner came out at one point and was quite friendly and spoke with us. It's on the Union Station side of H Street and all its coffee is from a single source. When you walk inside Sidamo, you feel like you stumbled up an old, hidden gem. There are coffee bags on the ground and only 7 single tables. There are plenty of plugs and free wifi so HUGE win for them. I'm picky about my coffees and tried 100 different cafes around the states, and this was my first Ethiopian coffee experience and it did not disappoint. I tried a hot mocha, and an iced mocha, and both were equally delicious in taste, BUT i don't know if it actually had coffee in it? or if it was just so smooth that it allowed my mochas to taste like chocolate milk. I was a bit confused but they tasted amazing. The hot mocha tasted more like a good chocolate milk coffee. It was very smooth and rich, but not overwhelming. The iced one tasted smooth too, but it didn't have much of a coffee flavor like your average iced mocha. It tasted like a really good mocha milk with a hint of coffee flavor. Is that how Ethiopian coffee is? anyone? also, the wait was really long. i think i waited 30 mins for 2 coffees and two bagel sandwiches. When i have nothing else planned, I will probably come here again, because it was really tasty and i like to support small family businesses. Sidamo is truly a rarity amongst all the coffee shops around the city. They have mastered the balance between their genuine, authentic love for their craft while providing a charming, cozy atmosphere to anyone who walks through their door. The staff are incredibly kind and approachable. No pompous hipsters or arrogant coffee snobs, just delicious coffee with passionate-friendly coffee makers. I specifically want to highlight their Yirgacheffe beans - hot or iced, the flavor is sublime. It's hard to explain the flavor because you need to try it firsthand to understand how good it is. Smooth, fruity, rich yet light. It's an array of flavors that turn into one phenomenal sip of coffee - it leaves you wanting more. I suggest trying the coffee straight black - the flavors are more pronounced and enhanced as opposed to adding milk/cream/it doesn't need anything. Since the place is small, you can basically hear everyone's conversations which makes this place ehhhh for studying and getting work done.
