We came to Depoe Bay for our annual book club retreat, 13 women. We came here for our dinner out. The ambiance was cozy and inviting. Service was excellent and they accommodated our request for photos as a group. Thank you, Rob, for putting up with our group and Shenandoah for accommodating our request to meet the chef. The drinks were EXCELLENT, specifically the jalapeño passion fruit martini--highly recommend. But the food. Come for the food. I had the crab cake appetizer and the risotto. The friends all agreed the risotto was AMAZING. Creamy, acorn squash, and tomato broth. I can't even. I tasted the halibut and heard from my friends that the halibut was the best they'd had. We are visiting from out of state for our anniversary, we were looking for a nice restaurant with a good variety on the menu. The food was delicious! I had the panko crusted halibut and my partner had the New York strip and shrimp. We were both really happy with our meals. Our drinks were good too! Our server was mostly attentive and when she took a while to get back to us she was apologetic. She was very sweet though. The reason I have the service 4 stars instead of 5 is the hostess seemed really annoyed when we came in. Wow, this place is worth the trip to the coast. We stayed at Salishan, which is about a 3 minute drive. The fish tastes really fresh as well as the fruit and veggies in the meal. The cocktail list was also great, a lot of variety. The staff was really helpful and kind and the restaurant had a really great vibe. This a gem! We were starving and this place was fantastic. I had the Tuna Melt, the best sandwich I have ever had! The other food items my other friends had were fabulous. We still talk about the meal we had here. My other buddies ordered the crab cakes, shrimp chowder, Caesar salad and another salad (can't remember what one) it had goat cheese and nuts on it. We didn't mean to deprive you of this amazing food! We started our meal with the fresh Thyme Biscuits served with honey butter! OMGoodness! Four large biscuits graced a basket with the most heavenly texture & flavors! For our entrees we both ordered the two crab cakes & four prawns meal. The prawns were the show-stoppers here with their buttery, char-flavor, cooked to perfection! The crab cakes were also amazing with their dense, soft crab perfectly breaded & fried to a slight crunch. The asparagus was amazingly fresh and crunchy. The mashed potatoes were good but not on the same caliber as the rest of the meal. From the moment you set foot in the courtyard, you feel like you're somewhere special. The decor and ambiance at the Side Door Cafe are quite charming. The walkway to the entrance had Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary wishes in chalk for the guests who had made reservations for their special occasion. Staff were congenial and service was good. The food did not impress. Four in our party. Two ordered the same meal-mushroom ravioli; it was "okay" served with a tomato sauce and not brimming with umami mushroom flavor. The person who ordered the appetizer portion crab cakes said that they were good. The cup of seafood chowder that I had was too thick and had 1-inch+ potato chunks with tiny pieces of salmon (I could not discern other seafood). The Risotto with roasted vegetables and acorn squash was served in the squash, which could have been roasted longer. (Acorn squash is wonderful when you can find a ripe sweet one, but that's difficult. A more reliable choice is butternut or honeynut). There were very few other vegetables and very little flavor to the risotto. read more

For dinner, I had Parmesan Panko Crusted Halibut. This normally comes with some sort of crab risotto as a side, but I asked what I could sub in for the crab and was told they had vegetable and cheese risotto. I had the cheese risotto and it was so creamy and delicious. My halibut was perfect. My husband had Gorgonzola bacon jam burger. He thoroughly enjoyed it. One note - no fries here to go with your burger. Instead you can choose from shrimp coleslaw, dill potato salad or garden greens. Great ambience, great service, great food and great drinks. We had reservations for three and arrived early. The hostess checked us in and took us to a table. It was a four top and she removed two setups and left two menus. I reminded her that there were three of us and she left the other setup and got one more menu. A busser brought us water and we studied the menu. Minutes go by and no server comes by to get us started. The restaurant was not busy at all and there were many servers hanging out by the front counter. We sat there for 20 minutes and never had a server come by. Other tables were being served, but not ours. We were uncomfortable now and decided to leave. As we walked out, the hostess that seated us said "Thanks for coming in". Then we explained that we never saw a server. She apologized and said she would get us a server. A little too late. We were looking forward to our meal and many locals had said how good it was. We were very disappointed. read more

We started with the olive plate and a cocktail...I generally don't think much about an olive plate, however I wish I could get the recipe! Nice ambience with original artwork and the tall ceilings made it feel open and airy. OMG! I got the special of the day - Steelhead trout with crab. Um Helloooooooo, OMG!!!! Best thing ever! This is a must, absolute must, on your next trip to Lincoln City, Depoe Bay or Gleneden on the beautiful Oregon coast. I was joined by my hubby and my in-laws. The company was great, the food was phenomenal! We were greeted and seated immediately. I'm the only one who ordered an appetizer, and let me tell you- there were some disappointed faces staring back at me! Served in a chilled Martini glass with perfectly thinly sliced carrots and cucumbers with a generous amount of fresh avocado. The bay shrimp were swimming in a perfect cocktail sauce. I usually prefer heavier horseradish flavor, but this was still excellent. And huge! My in-laws both opted for the 14 ounce Chargrilled Ribeye steak served with Creamy Mashed Potatoes, Rosemary and Garlic Butter and Broccolini ($45). My FIL went with medium rare and MIL for medium. Hers was over cooked, but still very, very good. The steaks were tender, juicy and very saporous. I did have a bit of food envy as it made my mouth water just looking at it! For the second time in two-weeks my hubby of 31 years BLEW MY MIND with his choice of entree! I really thought he was joking with his order of the Gorgonzola Quesadilla ($15). Packed between two perfectly grilled tortillas, were Grilled Chicken, Pears, Pecan, Gorgonzola Cheese and a Sweet Hot Mustard Aioli. This hubby of mine has never eaten a pear in his life. Kraft Mac-N-Cheese makes up a good 60% of his diet, so I was floored by this choice and was certain he'd made an horrific mistake. Two bites in he proclaimed it as one of the best meals he's ever had. I'm allergic to mayo, so no bite for me, but my in-laws were equally as stunned as I, and echoed the hubbies sentiment. I had the Fresh Shrimp Quesadilla ($22). Stuffed with Bay Shrimp, Avocado, Cheddar and Pepperjack Cheese with Chipotle Sour Cream and and Salsa Verde on the side. I didn't realize until just as I'm writing this, that I didn't receive the sour cream, which makes me laugh, because as we were eating I had said sour cream would've made this dish out of this world! Even without it, this dish was stupendous! It was a huge portion (all of the entrées were) and I'm a tad embarrassed to admit I cleaned my plate. We got dessert to go. We selected Coconut Crème Pie, Lemon Curd Cheesecake, Key Lime Pie and some sort of magical Chocolate crust Chocolate Crème Pie. I have no words. They were rich, lush, sweet (but not too sweet), rich (but not too rich) and we all feel like Gluttons! This entire experience was even more than I could've imagined. I think I could eat there every night. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. I've eaten here three times during the pandemic, all as a "to go" order and was really excited to eat inside this lovely and tastefully decorated gem of a restaurant. I recently had a birthday dinner at Side Door and everything was fantastic from beginning to end. We started out with some drinks and a crab cocktail. The crab was fresh and delicious and the cocktail sauce was some of the best I ever had. I had the crab cakes with prawns and loved it. Your run of the mill crab cake has more filler than crab. The opposite was the truth here. So much crab in the cakes and the sauce was the icing on the cake. My wife enjoyed the mushroom ravioli. She said it was delicious, but I didn't get a bite so can't comment on it. I did sustain some minor injuries from her fork while trying to sneak some. That sounds like a endorsement from her.
