Me and my co workers were craving bbq after work. Called for takeout and the waiter who answered was super helpful! She recommended the mac n cheese as a side for our full rack of ribs and it was spot on! The ribs was delicious and finger licking good! Its a cool little spot off of Main St. parking was a breeze. What can I say about my experience here; improve in the quality of steak knives or the quality beef? My steak sandwich had so much gristle that it was impossible to bite and chew, and the cheap steak knives were incapable of cutting through it. Therefore eating it was impossible. I spent nearly $60.00 on two steak sandwiches, fries and a side of Mac n cheese. My dogs received most of the food as we couldn't eat it. The flavor was good, the gristle content was much too high. I really want to like this place. Everyone is super nice, and the vibe is good. However, the brisket slices I've gotten the last two times have been very fatty. Like inedible. I'm not sure if they are trimming the brisket down before smoking, but it was over an inch of fat cap on a 2in thick slice of meat. Giant burger for $21 with a side of coleslaw that totally hit the spot. Bun held together well for a massive, thick-cut patty. No skimping on meat- it was the majority of the burger (versus other places that pile on with lettuce, tomato so that the meat plays a secondary role). It was perfectly grilled with yummy toasted brioche bun. After a long bike ride this really filled me up. The coleslaw was interestingly seasoned- dill sprinkled on top was refreshing and added depth to your typical side of slaw! Overall, impressed with the quality and fill factor. Good atmosphere, service was friendly and speedy, food was good but imo the meat was not cooked with enough salt and no containers for left overs. We had sliced brisket with beans and steak of the day that came with a wedge salad potatoes and sauces. We plan to go back to try again. read more

Such a score! Just go! We were looking for a great lunch and not a fast food chain out on way home to Bend, Or. We stumbled upon Side Iron and are so glad we stopped. We ordered the pulled brisket and a brisket sandwich... Cole slaw, Mac & cheese, and baked beans. All was incredible. Everything is made in house and the baked beans were insanely good. Brisket sandwich was super generous portion of sliced brisket and the bun was perfect. Cole slaw was tangy super crunch and not all mayonaise-y. Mac n Cheese was no joke! Delicious Barbecue with the best natural hardwood smoke flavor inside the Historic Pioneer Hotel in Susanville, CA. Great service by friendly staff in a great 19th century western setting. Great wall above the counter of local ranch brands, vintage lighting and great atmosphere. I have eaten there three times so far and have enjoyed the juicy, smoky steak dinner with delicious potato wedges and a wedge salad with blue cheese crumbles twice and once enjoyed the pulled brisket with coleslaw and yummy barbecued beans. I saw this place as I was driving in to town so I thought I would check it out. The food was good and the server was friendly and gave me his suggestions. The ambiance though, was very strange. It was only me and two other customers in the entire restaurant. There was a worker who seemed to have a desk in the dining room which was strange. It was a counter service type restaurant as you placed your order up at the cash register and then you find a seat anywhere you want to sit. Will I be back?? Probably so. The ribs and the fried okra was all pretty darned good. However, I just hope (for their sakes) that there are a few more people in the restaurant while I am there. read more

Was up from Reno and I had the Brisket sandwich and Macaroni and Cheese. Or, should I say I had about 1/2 of each and took the rest home to my wife as the portion is very hearty. The brisket has tremendous flavor and the Mac is gourmet style. Highly recommend this place and already told several locals what they have been missing. At first you might just want to come here for the historical vibe. Established in 1862, and formerly The Pioneer Saloon this is the OLDEST operating business in northeast California! That alone is intriguing. The design of this old style pioneer building is such that if it wasn't for the GIANT restored neon sign you might drive right past the place and not even see the entrance door. It's almost "speak easy" in that way. The counter space has a peek through window down to the cellar which is so cool you can feel what might of went on back in the prohibition era. Love the high ceilings , the lighting and the friendly staff, the old family style dining furniture with an eclectic mix of wood tables and chairs. The pool table and decor give it that fun relaxed atmosphere. What an amazing space. Everything is really clean and inviting. What's more inviting is the aroma of smoked meats/bbq that will have you drooling before you even get your food. You place your order at the bar counter before you sit down and the food is brought on stainless steel serving trays (I love these & use at home too) for a backyard picnic kind of meal. Fun and hearty sides like a yummy wedge salad or mound of potato salad, beans & more. We ate here a couple times and had the following: Full rack of ribs, smoked sausage, pulled brisket , wedge salad, jalapeño bacon corn & potato salad. Bbq is amazing with a nice char. Smoked sausage & ribs were repeat orders & wedge salad. Potato salad could be done a lot better & jalapeno bacon corn has potential but was very chewy/dry (needs a creamy element to it). A unique old bar in a huge space. The place was really interesting with old photos, a pool table, cornhole and other cool hist pieces. The owners were delightful, happy to share their story and the story of their space. Saved the best for last. The food was delicious! I had the brisket and it fell apart. I mixed it with the Mac and cheese, so yummy:) and also had the wedge salad. Everything was tasty and priced well for we got. Also, housemade lemonade, so good. Not sure at first but was happily surprised! A menu that can only grow and an atmosphere that is really great. Kids played pool with other kids at the next table. They have a bar, dining room, pool, cornhole, and a fooseball table all set up so they don't annoy diners. Super cute and friendly hostess along with good food and service. Food is absolutely AMAZING! We ordered ribs, Mac n cheese, burger with fries, and I was so surprised how delicious it was. The seasoning on the fries was so good you don't need any dipping sauce. The Mac n cheese is cheesy and gooey. The burger was massive and tasty. For the price of the food you get your moneys worth. The owners were very sweet and provided great customer service. On the outside it may not look like much, but the inside has cool decor and it's a very nice space to have a meal. Highly recommend you try it!!! read more

Stopped for a late lunch on our way through town. I got the steak medallions with salad and it was delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection! Only one piece of gristle. The wedge salad had crispy cold iceberg lettuce and only a few tomatoes but was a solid 5 in flavor! My husband ordered the lean barbecue brisket and potato's salad and the serving was huge. Took half with us. He enjoyed the flavor. We sat at the bar so as far as indoor service goes we got to order right away and the food came out quickly. They also hard some delicious specialty sodas. Not sure how to feel about this Business. I heard mixed reviews from friends since their opening so finally decided to take the plunge and try their cuisine on a special occasion! I had no idea this was more of a "self serve" establishment so my spouse and I sat for 20+ minutes before we were told we could order from front counter. Total wait for food was 40 plus minutes. We were told by a fellow customer that napkins and utensils were at a certain station. Thank goodness we grabbed the last two napkins and 2 of last 3 forks. The young lady at the counter did not explain how things worked at this establishment so I tipped her 18% thinking we would get decent service. It took over 30 mins to get a mug of ice (again, with another customer letting us know where we could get our own water). Now for the food review......we ordered the sampler platter. Mac and cheese and bacon beans were delicious! Shame on you for trying to pass off burned, dry chicken as edible, sausage that is overcooked and tough and trying to hide old brisket stacked under fresh tender Brisket . I'm told this location boasts a lot of history.... but is this enough to put up with poor service and subpar cuisine? read more

Thought we would try this place out heard it was the best in town...wrong the girl was eating behind the bar an did not ask if we had ever been there she could have asked as we did not know you had to practically beg for water then wait 20 minutes to get a glass of ice..i guess she thought if the ice melted i would have water ...she never said we had to get our own napkins an utensils which was a shortage of... she could have made her tips by restocking..an the food well it will make a turd we ordered the platter which was a good portion for 2 the meat was dry the sausage was crisp and rubbery only things worth eating was the mac an cheese an the beans..oh an the mystery meat was so over cooked i guessed it nay have been chicken anyway i hope your visit is much better..very disappointed read more
