I had a very nice stay at Sideways Inn on one Sunday night. I paid less than $100 for the night so I am not judging the place based on 4 star expectations. The room was clean, comfortable and well equipped. Even though my room was facing directly onto Highway 101 I did not hear any noise from the road at night. They must have but nice new doors on the rooms recently. This place appears to be a work in progress and I can see that it will continue to improve. My only complaints: Lavender scented bath product were a little to strong for a male guest, and the breakfast was a little weak. Again, not a 4 star hotel, so free breakfast was a nice touch. The hot tube felt very nice after a busy weekend and the pool is good. Hot tub only holds 6, so it might be crowded on the weekend. Other perks: free WiFi, nice new towels and bedding, new everything in the rooms, super convenient to the highway and to Anderson's for pea soup. I would stay again for sure if the price was the same. read more

Came to celebrate my sister's birthday and can't begin to tell you how disappointing this motel was. First of all it's right next to the freeway. It feels like you are on the freeway. First I go to check in and there are two reservations made for me. I had called to inquire if they were open and the person who I spoke to decided to book a room for me after I had booked through hotels.com. Once that was resolved since it was literally 3:30 I requested a room on the bottom floor near the pool. She said my reservation only allowed for certain rooms. I told her I would pay more, she said it wasn't about the money. It took her 35 minutes to find me a room and it ended up even closer to the freeway. The walls had putty stains on them. Terrible customer service. The funny thing was the motel was literally empty. Don't waste your money on this place right next to the freeway. We didn't end up staying. The girls at the front were rude and incompetent. She kept saying the computer system was slow. Horrible experience all together. Terrible customer service. read more

I was surprised to be booked in the building with a bar and next over it as well. Having other availability? It also was supposed to be non smoking but definitely smelled like smoke which make it harder to breathe due to my allergies. Being the bar downstairs can smell all smoke coming up. Beautiful Hotel! My hubs and I were sent here from the "sister" hotel in Solvang-Vacations Inn. Apparently our room at the V I couldn't be used when we arrived so we were sent to Sideways. Someone dropped the ball somewhere because when we arrived at Sideways, the front desk person had no idea who we were or where we were coming from and he was amazed we had no paperwork with us from the Vacations Inn. He was irritated not to have been informed. He had to make some phone calls to get it all figured out. The room was gorgeous! and very clean. Didn't really go for the shower-a "rain" type shower-right on top of your head! Only one side had a door so it was COLD in the shower! The TV didn't work very well-couldn't change channels without waiting FOREVER. The breakfast was fun but we prefer leaving the room for a breakfast with the other guests. The firepit also was a nice touch. Maybe a few more coffee pods would be nice-we had 3 between the 2 of us and we both are coffee drinkers! The coffee in the lobby was great-although the decafe was cold. and the Danish were EXCELLENT! Thank you. All in all it was great! read more

We stayed here one night while visiting Solvang (5 min drive away). Cute place, nothing fancy but clean and had everything we needed. Front desk receptionist was super nice and friendly. Quick check in. Took off one star only because there's a half shower door so water gets out and shower head was not strong enough (felt like it took forever to wash hair). The a/c works nicely though the unit is super ugly. Very spacious room with vaulted ceiling. Crisp, fresh linens, mattress had no signs of bugs/mischief. Basic amenities. The tvs are nice. The furniture isn't broken. My neighbors were tired/clumsy but they settled down quickly. I wasn't afraid to take my shoes off because the room was humble and clean. Tidy. I'm glad the new owners will be fixing it up. Right now, as an economical stay, it fits our needs. Nicer towels. Handicapables, request a 1st floor room. read more

Excellent place. We have stayed here multiple times and this was the best. They are currently remodeling the place BUT it is not a wreck. The staff are so wonderful. Especially Marcelino!! The rooms are nicely renovated and the decor in the rooms is very lovely. We heard a lot of noise in our room from people on the stairs and walking through the hallway. I had to use a white noise app on my phone all night for our children to get some sleep. Also, because of the shades on the windows and doors, we could not get the room dark. Even at night, there was a lot of ambient light. I woke up at 2 am and thought it was daybreak. If you are going to stay here, bring earplugs and eye shades. The pool is okay, but the gates to the pool are adult-proof. We watched as every couple approaching the pool for the first time was baffled by how the handle and key lock did not work and had to be shown by someone that there was a top pull function on the upper corner of the gate. All of that was okay, but what I really found disappointing was how unfriendly the service was. We stayed on a Thursday and were told about the managers happy hour with a complimentary glass of wine. We went to inquire in the bar/lounge about this and were told, rather harshly, that we could not have young children in the area. We were told they could not even be on the patio. Another guest sought us out to tell us he and his wife had to go separately so one could watch the children while the other had a glass of wine. We checked at the lobby if we could enjoy the complimentary glass of wine with our children in another location and were basically told too bad so sad. The next morning at breakfast, my children saw the food spread and when I showed them the waffle machine, they got excited and ran toward it. There was no furniture or anything in their way. We were one of two families in the hall. The woman staffing the kitchen then yelled at my children for running in an essentially empty space. This place is not child-friendly and not family-friendly. The breakfast is a very poor offering of toast, oatmeal packs, hard boiled eggs, and two cereal options. There were two danishes when we walked in at 8 am, but once those were taken, the woman did not replenish. Either they need to order more appropriately or the woman in the kitchen should be less stingy when replenishing. Overall, an unpleasant experience. read more

We came here for some relaxation and play. We are stay three nights and four days. Not only are the rooms beautiful but large and spacious. We did ask for a larger room. But the service is FANTASTIC. Brock manned the front desk and gave us great service. He called the morning of our check in and made sure that all my questions were answered. Clean rooms and amazing staff! I love the idea of having breakfast dropped off to your room. It's a simple breakfast menu, perfect for on the go plus the lobby serves Danish pastries. Our room had a patio facing the courtyard, which was a perfect spot to enjoy my coffee before the rest of my family woke up. Solvang was less than 10 minutes away and there are plenty of other attractions nearby. We only stayed 1 night, but we are definitely coming back here again! It was a great find. read more

Went to the bar and had the most amazing experience. Delight the bartender was attentive and made a great drink. People were playing pool and having a great time on a Friday night. It seems that many people here are locals because they seemed to know each other but were very inviting to a stranger. Would definitely recommend this bar to people, they are remodeling...hope it only gets better. read more

I had no issues with the room itself. Beds were fine, microwave, mini fridge, and complimentary water were appreciated. However, as other reviews have indicated, the shower water pressure was terrible. The shower trickled water out, it was the worst I've seen. Also, the AC unit is extremely loud so if you're a light sleeper you can sweat in the summer months or be constantly woken up as it turns on and off. Finally, they tell you breakfast is 7-11 but apparently getting there at 10 means all the Danishes and whatever else we missed are all gone. When I asked about danishes, the worker replied that breakfast had been going on since 7, and they ran out awhile ago. When I replied that there was an hour left of breakfast, she had no response for me except "sorry". Sadly disappointed as this was my first time to the area, and we definitely won't be returning. Honestly, I think breakfast was the biggest letdown. We walked into this huge area, and saw others wandering aimlessly looking at the slim pickings. I get that breakfast is complimentary, but don't tout the fact that you serve delicious danishes if you aren't going to keep it stocked. read more

Asking for a night of payment when you reservation could be more than 30 days out isn't reasonable in my opinion. In particular if you've stayed at the hotel multiple times. I really loved this hotel with a couple of exceptions. I was a bit wary being that it was in Buellton but we were pleasantly surprised. The decor in the lobby and in the rooms are great. The room was equipped with an iron, full-size mirror, and good quality soaps and such. The furniture and bathroom definitely lovely. I love that they had fire pits and the lounge was really nice too. I had two whiskey sours and they were great. My friend ordered a sangria and it was a little disappointing since it's seem to come out of a purchase bottle labeled sangria. The gentleman in the lobby and the bartenders were very nice and welcoming. My only complaint was that our bed was so firm that I woke up with a sore back (and I don't have back problems). As soon as we sat on the bed, we talked about how firm it was and we were a bit scared on how uncomfortable it would be sleeping on it. I read from other reviewer's that they thought the beds were comfortable so maybe we just got a bad room (we stayed in room 222). I also didn't like how much light came in through the windows/blinds. When we went to bed it wasn't as dark as I would like have liked it to been. I'd like to stay there again but the quality of my bed makes me reluctant to make another reservation. This is a motel straight out of a horror movie. I cannot believe the price per night on these rooms. Ridiculously expensive for what it was. The bed sheets looked clean and that was about it. Visible smudges and dirtiness on the walls and mini fridge. Seems like room service doesn't really wipe anything down, just changes out the bedding and towels. You couldn't pay me to use the shower, and the toilet smelled like urine. The AC didn't seem to work. Also, it was somewhat noisey. The only thing I actually liked was that the grounds and hotel was pet-friendly. I also liked how the management seemed laid back and friendly. But they seriously need to renovate everything and get a new cleaning staff. A more accurate price per night would be $80. read more

This hotel was amazing. The staff was nice, the property was always clean and organized. The rooms was so beautiful and without feeling like they were trying to be trendy. They have a pool and hot tub and fire pits areas on different parts of the hotel to relax at. Sideways Inn very much wants their guest to feel comfortable and enjoy your time here. They do have a new lounge bar that i didn't get to enjoy but that was only because the area has lots to see and do. Golf, wine tasting, excellent food (don't be fooled by the outside of the restaurants), and Solvang is only about a 7 minute drive from the hotel. My room was sort of on the isolated part of the hotel , away from the pool, dinning hall and bar lounge so i didn't hear much noise or have a reason to complain about the noise. The rooms and bed was great, I appreciate the cleanliness (that always a plus for me), and small detail, like leaving magazines for different activities and restaurants in the area, little notes about extra towels being available by the pool so in case you forgot your, you don't have to go all the way back to your room. Just a note, if you are attempting to have a couples get away, this place is okay but just remember its "family friendly" so you always hear and see kids. I wasn't bothered but it does feel like if they are in an area you have to accommodate them even though they are not with you... meaning they can take over the pool area or dinning area pretty easily. Overall i had a an excellent experience and would recommend for people to stay here. read more

We had such a great experience at The Sideways Inn! The rooms were ultra clean, decorated with a retro vibe, and very spacious! Our room had a mini fridge and freezer, a microwave, and a coffee maker. The hairdryer was excellent and not those puny barely blowing warm air pieces of junk you normally get at hotels. It had a lot of power. Sideways Inn was conveniently located, so that we could make easy day trips to Santa Barbara, Solvang, and Jalama Beach! Great place to stay! read more

We used to stay here for my daughter's soccer tournaments in Santa Ynez. It was dumpy but it worked for 13 year old soccer players and their cash-strapped parents. Six years later we were on the way back home from a wedding in Pasadena and wanted to stop in Buellton for dinner at Industrial Eats and beer at Figueroa Mountain. We checked rooms from online from Pasadena and the only place available was Sideways Inn. Hadn't heard of it and didn't love the name but at his point we just needed a room. Disappointment at pulling up to realize it was the old windmill was replaced by happy surprise at seeing the room. The (really nice) guy at the front counter told us they were remodeling but we weren't expecting the old stained carpet and sketchy bedding to be replaced by wood floors and white cotton sheets. The swimming pool area has been nicely redone also. Considering expectations and the price it couldn't have been much better. It's definitely not the dingy place overrun by screaming teens we last experienced. read more

Wonderful hotel!! I travel to this area yearly and have stayed in multiple hotels in the area (buellton, lompoc, and solvang) and this is the nicest!! Super clean room (like amazingly clean!), very stylish decor (kinda modern and artsy). Safe area with lots of parking, right off the hwy but super quiet. Our room had a balcony that overlooked a fire pit and some beautiful drought resistant landscaping...so peaceful and relaxing. The pool is big and clean with plenty of chaise lounge chairs around it. Our room had a mini fridge, microwave and Keurig. Continental breakfast was good-danishes, toast, fruit, cereal, boiled eggs, yogurt, etc. No negatives really about this place--i brought my small children and saw several other families w/ children but this hotel seems to target adults, I can't say the vibe isn't child friendly but it seems like its geared more towards adults/couples. I will definitely try to book this place again next year. read more

The Sideways Inn is a very nice, clean and comfortable place to stay. Conveniently located off the 101 hwy, it is easy to get to Los Olivos, Solvang, Santa Ynez, Los Alamos as well as walking distance to Industrial Way for wine options in Buellton. The beds are comfortable, housekeeping does a thorough job and the grounds are kept clean. The remodel is great and we will pay a return visit soon. The only thing worth noting is the thin walls and ceiling. If your on the bottom floor with heavy walkers above it can be a bit annoying. read more

Such a nice hotel! It was recently remodeled so it looks very modern, which is definitely a plus when looking for hotels. The room was very nice and clean, fully furnished with a working shower, mini fridge, even copious amounts of shampoo and conditioner as opposed to the travel size. One thing that could be fixed is having a guide for the TV. The pool and lounge were spectacular with a fire pit at each location. I was skeptical at first but Sideways definitely did the job! I'd recommend it to anyone staying in Buellton, especially if you want a reasonably priced quality hotel not too far from Santa Barbara/ Isla Vista. read more

we usually get a hotel on the cheap side, just because money is always an issue. we chose this one, not realizing they were under construction renovating. This did not hinder our stay one bit, in fact we found it enhanced, because the Mgmt went above and beyond to give us the nicest room OF OUR CHOICE- even though we arrived at 11 am- check in is at 3pm! They totally accommodated us, and happily, too. We had a queen sized bed (so comfortable, with a beautiful handmade Blue and White traditional Dutch quilt) and a large sitting area with modern furniture (sofa, overstuffed chair and coffee table) and unique lighting. the bath had a walk in shower and an amazing sliding 'barn' door which was one of the attractions of the room. The sliding glass door went out to the patio and on to the HEATED pool and spa.. Did i mention that this was the day after Christmas?? it was heated!! ok... we were very please with the stay but the breakfast was really a special touch, too. A free 'Continental' breakfast with coffee, juice, hot chocolate, rolls, bagels, cereal, fruit, yogurt- all very well-stocked, clean and welcoming. We were so pleased with our visit, we are planning to stay there every time we meet our Ventura family (we are in the SF Bay Area)- it's a few short miles to Solvang, and another hour and 15 mins to Ventura- so it's a perfect meeting place as far as we're concerned. Trust me, when money IS the object, you stay in a lot of dives when you travel and you just suck it up; most of the places are nothing to brag about. THIS PLACE IS! Stay at the Sideways Inn if you are going to be visiting Solvang or other surrounding areas. You will not be disappointed. read more

Not a bad place to stay if you're in town for wine tasting. Stayed here overnight Wednesday-Friday checking out on Saturday morning. Enjoyed dinner at the Firestone Walker Brewery just down the road and attended a wedding at the Firestone Winery about 8 miles away. Hotel room was clean, well decorated and the Pool and jacuzzi were kept too. The only issue we had was our room #202 faced HWY 101 which has quite a bit of noise from trucks passing through the night, we had to leave the room air conditioning running to lessen the noise. If you're a light sleeper this would probably bother you. Wifi worked great, and they offer a complimentary breakfast, but we opted for Starbucks which was 2 stoplights away. This location is pretty central to almost anything you'd need. Beautiful 40 minute drive outside of Santa Barbara airport, Mall shopping about a 30 minute drive, great wineries, pumpkin patch, Solvang minutes away...I'd stay here again but opt to request a different room location. read more

I stayed at this new hotel and overall it's nice, but I had to give it only three stars because the bathroom did not have a counter to place your stuff on, which was a big two thumbs down for me. The sink is a pedestal-type sink with little room to place your toiletries on. The rooms are very small, they appear smaller than other hotel/motel rooms. It looks like the designers made the best use of such small spaces, but I was not really impressed. And the lighting in the room was not good. But here is what was good about the hotel stay: the service is very friendly, the hotel lounge, located in a separate building, is great, and the shower/amenities are very good. But again, the room is very small and there is no room to place your toiletries in the bathroom - that's a must for many women. read more

Meh. We came here because my fiance is in love with the Sideways film. We've read many great things about this hotel, that just unfortunately didn't add up. Check in was very easy and the staff was very nice, but the room itself wasn't the greatest. When we got our room, it was facing a major roadway which we didn't think would be a big deal - well, we were wrong. All you hear are cars flashing by all night. The bathroom was disgusting with leftovers from the people before us being toenails in the shower, and hair in the drain plus hair all over the toilet. The bathroom floor was visibly dirty and hadn't been cleaned in quite some time. The water pressure is awful, and I mean awful. It is so slow, meaning a 5 minute quick shower turns into 20 having to rinse anything. The futon had multiple stains on it that looked like boogers. The sheets on the bed had lipstick stains very visible. There isn't much drawer storage and only about 8 hangers in their "closet" area. I do have to say their complimentary breakfast delivered to your door is quite convenient, but other than that, I'd have to pass on another stay here. I wouldn't recommend staying here if you're not going to spend much time in the room. read more

Had a weird stay at this hotel last weekend. First, we were told we were staying in room 115, although we were given keys labeled 113. It was a moot point, because the damn keys didn't work for either room, and I had to go back and see the flaky lady at the front desk who didn't seem to know what was going on. Eventually we made it to our room, which was quite dated and poorly maintained. There was mold all over our shower, cracks in the wall by the toilet; the cable didn't work, and neither did the wifi. I phoned the front desk to ask if there was cable access, to which she replied with a terse "No, there's not." Ummm, ok, grouch. So unfortunately all we were able to watch were re-runs of the A-Team on the one channel we could actually get. But the weirdest part of our stay was the melodrama taking place between the staff members the next morning at breakfast, when a verbal argument broke out because someone ordered the wrong cups. This turned into quite an event, as several staff members were arguing in front of customers trying to have a quiet breakfast. Nothing more bizarre than trying to eat breakfast and overhearing "I don't see what ordering cups has to do with what we're talking about!" Leave the soap opera at home, folks, because we're on vacation. Was tempted to speak with management about having some of the cost reimbursed due to the poor facilities, but why bother? It didn't appear to be a sea of professionals we were dealing with. Next time we will opt to stay elsewhere. read more

I am extremely upset and disappointed in my stay at your location. After checking out, I discovered that one of my items was missing after having house cleaning. I call the front desk to check lost and found and they say they dont have the item. I push a little harder saying I know it was there and that I suspect that someone lifted my ipod through cleanup and the front desk instructs me to call back the next day. I call back the next day and poof my item has reappeared. I try to work out some sort of shipping arrangement after trying to come by and just pick it up in person and they wouldnt let me. Here we are 3-4 days later and the postal service is saying the hotel does not have my ipod that they TOLD ME THEY HAD. I have placed a call to the local sheriff department and will be pressing charges if necessary. I will also be filing a complaint with the BBB and yelp and expedia and hotels.com and whomever will listen. I PAID to stay at your facility so you could take my stuff and then admit to have it and still not return. You are thieves and liars and I will NEVER come back. I want my ipod back, compensation for my stay and for you to pay for shipping for an item that your staff took. read more

I was really hoping for more. It looked promising online. Front desk barely acknowledged our presence when we walked in. We came at 1:00, they told us no rooms were ready. Come back at 3. We had friends staying there who said there were empty rooms on either side of them ready to go. Rooms are OK, the hotel is sort of fixed up, but then other areas are run down, lots of peeling paint. When we called down to the front desk for a wine opener, they said we could come get one for $3. We tried to get in the Jacuzzi at 9am and was run off by a very grumpy old pool guy who said it's closed until 10am every day. When I asked why so late, he barked at me saying, "when else am I supposed to clean it?" I said, perhaps earlier (like every other hotel in the country) and he barked again (and I mean barked) "I've been here since 8!" (yes, that's why I said earlier) Bar looks super cool, but we're here with a 12 year old and they won't let him any where near it, not even on outside patio. Gym was nice. I liked Sideways Inn the first couple of times I stayed there. The rooms are tasteful and sensibly arranged for the convenience of the guests. Unfortunately, the last time I checked in, the agent at the front desk jacked the price from 120 to 200 dollars, because it was Saturday. I paid for the room and then went out to eat. When I returned to the motel, I was disappointed to find my room was dirty with both a child's cot and main bed left unmade and trash on the floor. The night manager didn't seem too concerned when I told him. He just asked if I wanted another room. I declined and asked for a refund then went across the street to Andersen's, which only charged $90 for Saturday overnight. My previous stay at Sideways was also ruined by the sound of loud drunks yelling in front of the on-premises bar. read more
