I stumbled upon 33 wine bar after dinner in Lafeyette square and I was so surprised at how lovely it was. There is plenty of tables inside and the outdoor patio is gorgeous. The menu was filled with many great wines and cocktails. I tried the orange wine and it was amazing. We also got the table bread with oil and the bread was delish but there was enough oil for only 1 piece of bread.. The service was impeccable, our bartender was so knowledgeable and sweet. I love this wine bar and I can't wait to go again, it's also open late which is rare for that area. read more

I had never even heard of this spot, but my fiancé suggested it and it will probably been a new standard for us. We live right down the street and it's so convenient to get to! Great local wine bar 33 wine bar is strategically located in lafayette square, just down the street from the sqwires and other eateries. It is owned by a husband and wife who are a dynamic duo and provide recommendations for their tastings. They are always on the mark! Their patio in the back provides the perfect detachment from city living as there are lots of plants and an awning to protect from the brutal summer sun. Fear not tho - they do provide bug spray if you find yourself on the patio after the sun has set. They do have little plates for snacks while you sip on their wine, though we have never gotten them. They are reasonably priced and seem to pair perfectly. Services is quick and prompt, the pours are right in front of you. read more

This is such a great spot located in Lafayette Square. I am almost afraid to tell too many people about it because it's actually IMHO, the best kept secret for a Happy Hour or date night in the area! My friends and I went for a HH one day a few weeks ago and were able to get a nice spot on their patio. Speaking of, their patio is awesome and so tranquil and tucked away for privacy. I loved it! The menu is located online and you have to oder at the bar for drinks and snacks. We looked at the menu and then decided to order a bottle of wine to split so that we could each have a glass. Pay attention to the wine menu and prices so that you understand what you can purchase as a glass versus a bottle. They do have a corkage fee for bottles consumed in house. That was tricky for us to figure out at first, but we managed. After ordering the wine, we also opted for a cheese board so that we could have a little snack. When ordering cheese boards you can either order one where they choose the items for you, or you can order a la carte and select the cheeses from a list of what they have in stock. We opted to have them select the items for us since we didn't want to make too many decisions that day. Once we placed our order(s), we went back to out table on the patio and after a few minutes, the bartender brought us a few glasses and the bottle of wine. He chilled the wine for us right before bringing it out so that it was a perfect temp. A few moments later, our cheese board arrived and had some really good cheeses to try along with some local cuts of meats and some good bread and crackers too. It was the perfect amount for all of us to share. Overall, I would say this is on my list of "must visits" for Happy Hour or for a nice little date night. They also have a full bar if you prefer liquor over wine and they mainly have cheese boards, so please don't come here expecting a full meal. It's perfect for snacking and drinking. Great place to hang out. The service was great. The wine... Well, that didn't exactly please my palate. I'm normally a fan of Sonoma Pinot Noirs, but the one by I had here really missed the mark. Also, there was very little to eat when I arrived, short of a bowl of olives. With all of the alcohol offered here, I was hoping for a more robust food selection. I managed to pick a horrible night, as many of my friends had previous commitments, but the few and proud who were able to make it were treated to excellent service, as usual, and great wine. I'm hoping that Jeff, the owner, makes good on his aspirations to maybe open a sister shop in Kansas City. New chapters and new stories to be written there. I love this place!!! The ambiance is amazing! Great for a small group,date night, or even to grab a drink alone. The wine list is plentiful and the staff answers questions with ease! Felt as if I had a wine lesson! My favorite is the Saracco moscato which can be found in stores so that's a plus! You can enjoy with a cheese platter or maybe just a bowl of almonds. The dim lighting makes you wish they had lounge chairs but it's still pretty comfy sitting on stools either at tables or in front of the bar. It is my opinion that 33 is the best wine bar in Saint Louis. The people who work here always seem to know what they are talking about and while you are not going to find any amazing deals here the wine prices are reasonable and they have both lowish end and very high-end wines available. If you have a specific bottle you are looking for let the staff know. They are very good about trying to get different bottles. The atmosphere here is really cool as well and their patio is the perfect place to be on a spring or fall night. If you have not been here and are within a 30-minute drive I highly recommend swinging by. You will not regret it. read more

I don't know what it is, because typically I can handle 2 nice sized glasses of wine with no problem, but every time I go to 33 Wine Bar I turn into a total lightweight. It's so embarrassing. I have NEVER had a glass/half bottle/full bottle/whatever of wine here that I didn't love. Last week I enjoyed a spicy, rich cab blend, and it definitely warmed me up in this frigid weather. The wine list is a nice size and the staff is beyond knowledgeable. I need to try one of their cheese plates... This place is such a hidden gem! The wine list is amazing with unique offerings as well as some of your go-to favorites. I didn't have any beer when I went, but they had a large selection of beers on draft that looked delicious. They never disappoint us when we tell them what we are in the mood for, and ask for them to pick something out for us. They have wines available in a large range of price points from various regions. If you aren't into wine they also have a selection of craft beers and whiskeys/bourbons to choose from. There is something for everyone. Just wanted to set the record straight on a few things: 1) This bar, including the staff, is anything but pretentious. Jeff has had some pretty nasty comments thrown his way due to a Yelp "quick tip" made over a month ago. And a subsequent newspaper article that misrepresents him and his bar. He takes his work seriously, but still manages to be a real and humble person. 2) If you haven't been to 33, go here and see for yourself. No, they don't serve Budweiser. Get over it (myself included). Try some wine or one of their many craft beers available. They even offer Schlafly products if you don't want to venture too far outside the box. 3) Since the "33 Incident", I've been back to 33 and have been treated no different than any other customer. And that's a good thing since everyone here, even the drunk people who vomit on the sidewalk outside the bar or are too drunk to drive themselves home, is treated like family. And I will continue to go back when the mood strikes. 4) Jeff and I have had several conversations about the "33 Incident" and we thought the whole situation was kind of funny. After the awkwardness subsided, of course. Again, he takes his work seriously and will gladly talk to anyone about their misgivings regarding 33 or the staff within. He'll also give it to you straight up, so if you can't take it, get out of the bar. 5) Sadly, no one paid me/bribed me to update this review. My poor little liver couldn't handle such compensation in wine or other boozy products :) 6) Social media blunders can help build relationships just as quickly it can break them. How you handle yourself in these situations is key. 7) Those Post-Dispatch comments are like, woah! And they think yelpers are crazy? Really? 'Nuff said. After the beautiful wife and I made a token appearance at the Elite event at Brio (I wilted like a flower, what can I say?), we hit 33 with Steven and Brad. The interior is really, really dark. They have some blackboard with beer specials on it, and even be at the table closest to it, there's no way I'd be able to read it. Perhaps they should use Crayola Glow Chalk? On a more important note was the actual menu they give you -- any place that gives you a alcohol menu that has the thickness of a small book, you're doing something right. I deferred to others on what to get, but all the selections we had were fantastic. Not only that, but the fellow serving us provided some additional tasting notes as he poured. Very nice touch. As the evening became slightly less hot, we sat outdoors -- they have a mammoth patio out back. I don't know how many people they can legally have out there, but it has to be a ton. Smoking is allowed, so just be warned. The only negative thing I can say is that there's no signage. You just have to know the address and what door to enter. That's a little odd, but I guess that's part of its "vibe." Without a doubt, this is a return-worthy place. read more

Wine is tasty. Cheese is tasty. Wine bars are places to get tasty wine and cheese. 33 Wine shop and bar is no exception. You should go to 33 rather than any other spot though, because it offers a more intimate and personalized experience than other local competitors. For me, 33 represents Lafayette Square, it's classy and has it's feet rooted in tradition, but it's also relaxed and fun (if your version of fun is drinking good wine or beer). I love that you can go all dolled up with your girlfriends or a date OR you can totally come in your (not-too-sweaty) yoga clothes after a good class with Connie or one of the other ladies at Southtown Yoga down the street. The only reason why no 5 stars - they used to serve probably my favorite roast-beef sandwich in town and they discontinued that menu item. Also, it can get kind of loud in the main room, but if that happens, it's easy to go off to the east room. It's quieter there and you still get their fabulous service. Highlights - Wine by the glass or bottle - Craft beer for those who would rather get their dose of hops - Easily taste the wine before ordering a glass - Get a glass of Rose without worrying that people think you're drinking White Zinfindel - Buy a bottle "to-go!" As everyone else has noted this well hidden hide out is a great place to grab a bottle of wine with a friend or two. People were not exaggerating this itsy-bitsy place seats less than 50, including the bar. Which can make seating more than 4 a challenge. The wine and beer list is extensive. The wait staff was outstanding. All in all it was a great little place. I will for sure go back. Why four stars and not five? They only serve bottles, you cannot buy single glasses of wine. And their cheese plates are over priced. You have to pay $4 for crackers. I have never heard of such a thing. I wonder since I have to buy crackers in addition to my cheese, can I just bring my own? My advice, go to 33 after you have had dinner, share a bottle of wine and at about 12:30 am go next door to the Chocolate Bar and get an enormous $9 cheese plate, crackers included or a tasty dessert! read more

I LOVE this wine bar. I love that they are tucked away and in plain sight at the same time ... it gives the place a nice sense of privacy and "locals only" type feel. I also love that they are generous about letting you taste wines if you're feeling indecisive, and the staff are knowledgeable and good at making suggestions if you tell them what you like. The menu has a good selection of wines, beers and appetizers. The cheese plate is obviously my favorite food to get off the menu for anyone who knows me, and it's a beautiful thing how generous they are with their cheese servings here -- you get way more for your money than you would at any of the other wine bars I've been to in STL. It's nice to have it go a long way when it's wine time. The service can be a little slow, but to be honest, I like that. 33 is a charming little wine bar located in a boutique style row of shops and eateries in the beautifully historic Lafayette Square. I've been there a few times for the wine. The owner and staff are very knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The last time I was there I wasn't in the mood for wine and on the waiters recommendation I had one of the Belgian import beers instead. I had forgotten how strong Belgian beer can be and practically had that sweet waiter on my lap before I finished bottle number 2. Bad Kelly! Let me preface this by stating that I am not a drinker. At all. Let me also state that I grew up in St. Louis where people indulge in Schlafly and Budweiser. There's nothing wrong with that in my opinion. I'm not a beer snob. But honestly, I've never had a beer that didn't make me wince. So when I walked into this place, around midnight or so, I knew that I wanted a glass of Moscato. If you want to get me drunk, this is the only way to go, because I can't knock back more than a few sips of anything else. Or so I thought. Two of the owners were around (otherwise it was a ghost town so late on a Wednesday night), and after a lengthy and fancy conversation of beers, started by my wordy friend, I ended up with a half bottle of Saracco Moscato D'Asti, and after a sample, he ended up with a type of Belgian beer...a sour red ale. He wanted me to try it, and I was beyond skeptical, considering I have NEVER liked a beer IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. But I was feeling adventurous, so I half held my breath, half held my nose, and took it down. Decemeber 22, 2010 marks a momentous occasion in my life, The first time I have EVER liked a beer! I was thrilled...beyond thrilled. And I made sure that the entire bar knew it too...all 5 people. Ha. The owners were good sports, super down to earth, recommended more beers that I may possibly like, talked to us for a long period of time about restaurants and alcohol and everything else, and kept the bar open for us. I wouldn't want to go when it is busy, and I wish that they sold moscato by the glass (I'm little after all), but besides that, this place gets 5 stars from me for the atmosphere, the delish wine, and the service. From what was once a tiny little shop with a great patio out back, they've expanded and added more seating and more space. The guys do an awesome job bringing in beers that no one else in town gets, and even seasoned beer geeks will find something to enjoy. Yays: - Stellar beer list of bottles and draft that always includes some rare and great beers. - The wine list is unparalleled, and sold both in house and to go (lower prices to go) - Lots of sausages, cheese, and other little tidbits to tide you over while getting drinks. - The guys will be glad to explain anything to you and be exceptionally friendly. - The patio out back is huge. Sneak down the left side of the restaurant and emerge into a great place to have a drink and see the neighborhood from the rear. - You will see EricSTL6 from twitter if you go. I think he's permanently attached to a seat at the bar. Plus he's cool. - Great whiskey selection. Nays: - It's loud. Brick walls and no soundproofing stuff, so if it's busy, be prepared to yell. - Not open on Mondays. I want to love 33 like everybody else, but for some reason, it just leaves me cold. I think it's the stark decor. Maybe all the pub height tables. Anyway, I looked at the painting with the lady's butt too many times, trying to figure out if the crack was too long. If that's not fun, what is? I kind of feel like a bad student in the wrong classroom here. A few more visits and my comfort level might kick in, but for my first two visits, I'm definitley a struggling C- student. One thing that would really help is some more useful descriptions for the wine by the glass. They had some pithy remarks, but not much about the way the wine tastes. On the other hand, one wine reportedly had hints of "green pepper" if you can believe it. That's a first for me and definitely one to avoid. I assume they mean raw, or it is cooked? That's a stumper. We ended up getting a half bottle of Pinot Noir the server recommended. The first one she brought out, she poured a taste, which we tried, then she smelled it and said "That one's bad." She said it was corked and replaced it with another bottle, which tasted a lot different. Pretty good. They had 6 beers on tap, but I could just barely read the descriptions on the chalkboard behind the bar. Besides, I didn't think about beer until after we'd ordered wine. If she would have sold it a bit, I would have definitely wanted to try some. We'll probably come back if we're trying to impress a wine snob (yes, I have a couple of people in mind).
