Sierra Gold is our favorite local joint in South Reno. This restaurant has quite a large menu, but we always go for the same reason: happy hour! Our favorites are the 1/2 off pizzas, which have a really thin gluten free crust. We don't usually order gluten free anything, but after eating the pizza so many times and learning that it was gluten free, we were surprised. All drinks are also 50% off. If we miss happy hour we order the Cobb Salad and the bucket of boneless wings with the nitro sauce... delish! read more

I was looking for a place to enjoy breakfast and mimosas. Until 10AM the breakfasts are all 50% off. That was awesome because my breakfast entree was only $5. It was a good value for $5. For $10? Probably not. The eggs were standard but the stand out were the potatoes- they were thin and crispy. Like a breakfast Pringle! Pretty cool. Portion size was small for $10 and I guess generous for the half price time frame! The tricky part was that we drank our way into a larger bill than I saw coming. They didn't offer pitchers of mimosas as some more breakfast oriented establishments do. So... each mimosa was $8. Ouch. For the size and strength, this wasn't worth the price. The half price savings on breakfast was washed away super quick. If the food and drink quality had been better, and the service more on point, this would have been worth the money. The waitress was pretty overwhelmed so we waited a decent amount of time between rounds of drinks. Our meals did come out quite quick though - before we were even done with our first round of drinks. Ok, let me say that the staff was cool! Pretty gal behind the bar, and very nice. I ordered their cheesesteak sandwich for pick up. I asked if it came with peppers and i was told no, which is how i like it! I also was told they use cheese whiz, which is awesome too! It comes with fries as well. I ordered and drove over, after 10 minutes. I was told it would be 15 minutes, so i wanted to arrive before it was done. I arrived, and it was already done. This sucks, because it means its been sitting out, getting soggy and the fries nicely steaming and no longer crunchy. Turns out, it wouldnt matter too much for the fries, as they only give you a dozen or so anyways... The cheesesteak itself was lame. It comes with peppers (i was shocked TOO!) and it was nice and soggy when i began eating it. Its like all the cheese leaked out of the sandwich and pooled up in the container. Yes, the cheese leaked out like a liquid. Not good. The meat was ok, maybe even less than ok. I wont be trying their cheese steak again. I recommend you avoid it as well. Alrighty ladies and gentleman I feel that I shall update this review as i now have more experience with the place. My previous review going over the smoking/bar portion of the place still stands. Solid bed, good food, nice bartenders, decent ambiance. This review covers the outside seating area near the fire pit. I had a going away party with co-workers last week. There were about 10 of us. The outdoor area was empty besides us. They have quite a few tables and barstools as well as a TV and a huge fire pit with couches and loungers. It's covered so it's not a problem if it's raining or snowing. The food was really good this time around and everyone had fun drinking and bs-ing around the fire with drinks. This place would rock if you had a pound obnoxious group of twenty. Smoking is allowed on this patio as well. My constructive criticism is that the bar tenders did not come out to take drink orders often enough. They were not that busy inside so I can only conclude hat they figured it wasn't worth the walk since there were only ten of us. We had to go in twice to ask for more drinks. Late night dining options in Reno, especially south Reno, are few and far between. After 10pm, it seems like all the kitchens in Reno close down (even though the alcohol is still flowing). Anyway, that's how we landed in Sierra Gold this weekend. Post holiday party, we decided we were all still a bit hungry and thought we'd stop in for second happy hour. Whoops - we can at 10pm and second happy hour doesn't start until 11pm. Oh well.. we were here and hungry and decided to see what Sierra Gold had to offer us. I ordered a caesar salad with chicken. The waitress suggested that I do the salad with cajun chicken - did someone say cajun? - done! And she was right! For late night bar food, I was impressed with the quality of the food. Fresh romain lettuce, a nicely cooked cajun chicken breast, and plenty of grated (not the powdered kind) parmesan. The dressing was not homemade, but it was good quality caesar. Been here for breakfast a number of times. It is about time to put up a review...but only of the breakfasts meal. The food was ok. It wasn't something I would seek out or recommend to people but it was ok. The service seemed to be a little disjointed though. It took unusually long to get stuff, maybe the floor assignments aren't as clear as they should be or maybe someone was gone that morning. One thing that I did notice was the outfits of the waitresses. They were all "hot chick" with cleavage showing and stuff, but it seemed out of place at breakfast and maybe a little out of place on the more mature wait staff that is on at breakfast? I felt unwelcome the second I came. I felt like a burden to the waitress. I was going to shake it until she verbally degraded my parents who were picking up my daughter. She yelled at them several times to not go to the section of seating (because they were having a large party coming ) even though they were just picking my daughter up. Over our last few visits their service has gotten better so time for an update! Service has been friendly and prompt. Still mainly visiting for their happy hour, both breakfast and at dinner time. The breakfast specials are a great value and tasty which keep us coming back. Weekends during happy hour get really busy, try to arrive a little early. For dinner, they have some happy hour food specials although not as good of a deal as breakfast. Their spicy chicken bites are quite tasty, pizzas are hit n miss depending on the chef. Beer selection is really long but only a handful of seasonals that rotate. No players card required for the happy hour deals anymore, thank goodness because that was a pain. My husband and I have eaten at this hidden gem in South Reno on several occasions and had an excellent experience every time! The ambience is nice and pretty typical of a bar or casino. Low lighting, full bar, player's lounge, slot machines at the bar, and TVs all around. They also play overhead music, but unlike a casino it is much quieter and there's no smoke in the air. I have only used the restrooms once, but they were very clean. You seat yourself and can order food at the bar or sit at tables. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I don't know who their chef is, but he/she definitely deserves some recognition! They take normal bar fare, put a twist on it, and serve it with great presentation. Almost every meal has been cooked to perfection and is bursting with flavor! Tonight my husband ordered steak and eggs. He ordered the steak medium well, but it came out closer to medium rare. Our server noticed immediately and offered to replace it. My husband declined as he was full from the appetizer, and knew when he reheated the leftover steak at home it would cook further. Our server still gave us a 20% discount and a sincere apology. The steak was well seasoned (no need for steak sauce here!) and aside from a little gristle was very tender, juicy, and delicious. The potatoes were slices and cooked with onions and peppers. My husband thoroughly enjoyed them. I ordered the Mediterranean steak salad made into a wrap (all of their salads can be made into wraps). It was delicious! Not a whole lot of steak which might have made a wrap harder to eat, but the steak was very good just like my husband's, and in this case, cooked medium just like I ordered it. The lettuce was not drowned in dressing. I'm glad I had half leftover for lunch tomorrow! I ordered onion rings as my side and they were are worth every cent of the extra $1 charge. Crispy, golden brown, and tasty with a side of ranch. We shared the Seared Ahi appetizer. It was seared perfectly and was very fresh. The wasabi sauce drizzled on the plate had a nice flavor and kick to it. The soy sauce added a nice bit of flavor too. It was served with pickled cucumbers and carrots which I could have made a meal out of those alone they were so good! The coleslaw the ahi was served on was also very good. My only criticism would be a few too many sesame seeds. Our server was very attentive, kept our drink glasses full, and apologized when the entrees took a bit longer than normal to come out of the kitchen. I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try. I was shocked when we got our bill to see I had been charged $2.00 for a fruit salad that I didn't order. When we asked the server about this, she said that it was a "substitution fee". She offered no apology, no resolution, and walked away. So essentially, you charged me $2.00 extra for not getting bread or potatoes, and for getting raw tomatoes that I couldn't eat because half of them weren't ripe? Not cool. A generous pour of Butter Chardonnay, for instance, will set you back $6 during happy hour, $12 otherwise. Sierra Gold's vast menu includes: a delicious eggs Benedict featuring black forest ham and green chili; muscular shrimp & grits; fish (filet of cod) & chips; specialty pizzas (tasty and filling), a meaty French dip sandwich; and a splendid house chili. Yes, I have eaten here many times. Sierra Gold offers burgers in four makes (beef, turkey, veggie, and chicken) and eight models (topping combinations, that is), one of which stands out from the crowd: The Angry Burger with beef. If you like a spicy burger made with super-high-quality beef, this is the one for you. The burger gets its anger from pepper jack cheese, smoked Sriracha bacon and Sriracha ranch dressing; guacamole, tomato, a meat patty and a bun complete the Angry Burger. And the beef--it always takes me back to the glorious meat I ate after a day toiling on my hardwoods farm in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The beef served at Sierra Gold is grass-fed and grass-finished, not simply grass fed (which nearly always means the animal was fed grass till a month before slaughter, when it was fattened up on grain). Not only does grass-finished beef have a slightly gamier taste, but it also has twice as many omega-3 fatty acids as grain-finished beef. One of the chefs told me that SG gets its beef from Sierra Meat & Seafood, which is the Reno distributor for Durham Ranch of Wright, Wyoming. According to Durham's website, all of its beef comes from Black Angus cattle that "never have received any supplemental hormones, growth enhancers or been injected with antibiotics of any kind from the time of birth to harvest." In other words, Sierra Gold's beef burgers (and steaks) are sublime for myriad good reasons. My wife--no fan of beef--raves about SG's Turkey & Avocado Panini, which besides quality turkey and half an avocado includes Swiss cheese, chipotle aioli mayo, and herbed Focassia bread (which isn't made in house but rather comes from U.S. Foods, a food distributor to restaurants; it's not great Focassia bread but it's pretty darn good). For me, the highlight of SG's menu is its Seared Ahi Salad (pictured) served with a generous portion of sushi-grade yellowfin tuna touched with cajun seasoning (think garlic, oregano, paprika, onion, and cayenne, chili and black peppers). The rest of the salad consists of mixed greens, shredded cabbage, carrots, red onion, tomato, sesame seeds, pickled ginger, and dollops of wasabi cream that could be a little spicier for me (although it's "just right" as far as my wife is concerned). After a bit of prying I learned that the dressing is not made on premise, but rather it's Ken's Asian Sesame dressing. Ken's is one of the better salad-dressing brands, IMHO, and their Asian Sesame is sweet and delicious. Plus, according to Ken's website, it has only 80 calories (and 9 grams of carbs) per two tablespoons. Ya gotta like that. There's not much not to like about Sierra Gold, either. And if you're a sports fan it'll please you to know that SG has more than a dozen TV monitors broadcasting nothing but sports in high resolution. read more

I was greeted to sit anywhere I like. Waters arrived fast and the order was taken timely. The food came out warm. I'd prefer hot. The benedict was stacked with biscuit on the bottom, ham, egg, sauce, then covered in potatoes. Chicken fried steak was ok too. For $6.50, I cannot complain. Well don't worry, because they do Happy Hour all over again! That's right, half off pizzas and drinks starting at 11 every night! We arrived a bit before 11, but the bartender was really cool and offered to hold off ringing in the beverages until 11 for us. This place sports a nice tap list and a solid spirit selection too! Initially I thought I'd go for one of their pizzas, but after looking over the menu, the BUCKET OF WINGS and massive sauce list caught my eye! This was a quantity of quality kind of night, and I really didn't care what kind of wings they were as long as there were a lot of them. So we ordered up the bucket of 30 wings ($20.99 is a deal!) split into Jamaican jerk, Gold Fever (a mustard based bbq sauce I love and rarely see on menus), and Double Baked Cajun (cajun dry rub), and a "bucket of fries", which was a bucket of fries.The Double Baked Cajun wings had the crispy exterior and juicy interior I love about wings, and the rub was pretty good, but the Gold Fever holds a special place in my heart. Even though these weren't the crispiest wings I've ever had, they were good, and I'd definitely eat em again! I mean, the two of us dudes powered through those wings like it was our job! Visited Sierra Gold this past Wednesday night and I am a fan. We wanted a place where we could sit and have a casual dinner. We were there at 6 (PM) and happy hour goes until 7 which was a welcome surprise. They have really good happy hour drink prices as well as select appetizer's at 5.00. Loved sitting on the shaded patio, which was very quiet. They didn't have it on but there is a very nice fire pit. Our food came out very quickly and hot. Some friends invited me to breakfast on a Super Bowl Sunday morning at 9:15. As I drove up I noticed a sign out front that side half-price breakfast 6-10 a.m. daily. I assumed it was really only during the week and forgot about it. I ordered the Sierra Gold Platter $7.99 (three eggs with choice of bacon, sausage or ham steak) served with toast and potatoes. I chose over easy eggs and bacon with sourdough toast. When the meal came I was pleasantly surprised at the amount and quality of bacon! The bacon was thick and cooked soft the way I like it. Not sure if there were 3 or 4 pieces. The eggs were cooked correctly with a runny yoke but no runny whites. The potatoes were similar to home made potato chips, slightly crispy. I hate mushy potatoes so this was perfect for me as well. The sourdough was just one slice cut in half but it was a thick slice. The only thing I would have preferred would be for it to have been buttered instead of receiving the butter on the side. I like the butter to soak in to the bread and that doesn't really happen when it's on the side. Just personal preference, though. Our server (I forgot her name) was SUPER! she was friendly and outgoing and provided good service even though she seemed pretty busy. When the check came it was half off! I like coming to Sierra Gold for one reason... Their happy hour!! Half off ALL drinks and Pizza and they have it everyday which is great. It's right next to my work so we like to head over for an hour or two. The only downside about this place is it is always all men, which I totally get given the bartenders outfits :) I always get friendly service and their pizzas are really good. The restaurant is seriously our go-to place for happy hour from 4 PM to 7 PM! The happy hour menu changes sometimes, but always includes discounted food and drinks. They also have a late night happy hour that runs from 11 PM - 2 AM. We love the friendly staff when we walk in ("welcome -sit wherever you'd like!" - Michelle, Garrett, and Tommy...our absolute favorite bartenders) and ice cold beer on tap. Their pizzas are delicious, and if I want to switch it up, I go with the Thai curry shrimp bowl (I like to add broccoli). We prefer to sit at the large wraparound bar - which includes gaming - and chat with the bartenders. The bar area has a ton of tvs, if you are looking for a game. They also have high top tables, regular tables, and outdoor seating. You can renta private room for parties. And for people that like to play pool, this is your place! read more

I'm surprised that more people are not really excited about this breakfast, to be honest. The hubs is working an overnight shift so it's been a little hard to find a place to eat breakfast early before it's time to go to sleep. Sierra Gold is 24hrs and has breakfast happy hour (say whaaaa?), so it fit the bill perfectly. This place is dead at 5:45a, let me tell you. But if you can get past being the only person there, take a seat at the bar and wait until six to order. Okay, in the meantime, grab a breakfast beer. Oh don't worry, that's not anything special. It's just a beer. For breakfast. Once the clock strikes six, put in your order for a breakfast that is half-price. Which means that an epic breakfast burrito costs you a mere $4.50 and a plate of corned beef hash will set you back $5. Oh, how steep the prices during the happiest of all breakfast hours. The food isn't the best breakfast I've ever had (though the burrito is pretty close), but it's really decent and such a steal. I think my only comment is that the "home fries" they serve with it are closer to potato chips. Which, is fine with me, as long as they figure out how to cook them evenly. We've been coming to SG for a while and I have to say that I do like this place. First off - Happy Hour - at the time of writing it is from 4pm-8pm and 10pm-2am. Pretty much eveything (drinks and food) are half off. They do require that you have a 'card' now (doesn't cost anything except your time, name and email address) for Happy Hour but honestly its no big deal considering you'll save some coin on your receipt. They DO pour a stiff drink here which is nice if you're ordering a cocktail. They also have a great selection of beers both bottled and on draft including some local stuff. Their pizzas are excellent (if you like thin crust) especially the Gilroy which is a garlic and artichoke pizza. I've also had a few of their appetizers such as the pretzels and calamari, both of which were served hot fresh and good!. As others have said, I don't know whats up with the girls outfits here - it's not needed. When Sierra Gold started doing their long happy hours they get a TON of business and the outfits (tight leather vests and tight jeans) with everything spilling out makes it kind of tacky. That said, service at SG is good, people are helpful and friendly. I definitely recommend this place, especially if you are in the south part of town. read more

I've been somewhat of a regular for quite awhile now but waited to put out a review until I could get a general overall perspective. If you come in between 3 - 6, you're basically stuck with one bar tender, waiting around to get served, and everything is pretty much "do it yourself" like having to make trips to the bar to get yourself napkins for your food. Chase the bar tender around the bar, if servers exist, they're never around. Your mileage may vary. It's frustrating to be invisible for 15 minutes on average to get acknowledged, let alone get a drink. It's pretty consistent that you have to push for attention to even be served in this place. I go to play pool. All the pool sticks are missing either the tips or the bottoms, all in bad shape and you constantly have to fight the other table over the rack, since there's only one. Today I showed up and there was a big screw left on the pool table that turned out to be the rubber base of one of the pool sticks, that wouldn't stay in, even if you tried to fix it. The pool table lights are always so dim that you can't see to play, forcing you to have to track somebody down to turn the lights up over the pool tables so you can actually SEE to play pool. Annoying, since you're charged by the hour and it takes 45 minutes to an hour to fix. Check out the photo gallery where we have to play pool by flashlight for 45 minutes to an hour every time we come here. Seriously, what kind of logic says that you don't light the pool tables? Do they want people to stick around and buy more stuff or what? Totally insane. This isn't just a one off occasion. We go through this every time. What a joke! There was one glimmer of light in this entire experience, a consistent one to say the least. Carlos. Carlos went WAY out of his way, not even expected, to replace a cold cup of coffee with a fresh-brewed one. He literally took a full cup of coffee away and replaced it with fresh brew without even being asked. Came back, time and time again to check if everything was okay. Impeccible service. I think this started from the time he came on shift to the time we left. I gave 3 stars for Carlos as opposed the the original intention of two.I wish it could be more based on his level of service alone. I'd have upped the rating further but one man can't be present all the time. I'm thinking it's a management issue due to the consistency of lackluster service. read more

I love this place. I've had the pizza quite a few times without even stepping into Sierra Gold. My work has ordered some late night pizzas so I've tried a few different varieties. I finally made my way in one evening cause I was craving the chicken and ranch pizza. Not having known about the happy hour times, I called ahead and ordered my pizza to go. Once I walked in and sat down, I saw the sign and happened to be there during happy hour. 50% off drinks and pizzas? Um...yeah!!! We were greeted immediately and the bartender had no problem with us eating there. I even ordered a couple of drinks cause pizza and alcohol are a wonderful combo. Drinks were poured well...the thin chewy crust of the pizza was bomb diggity. I loved how many TVs there were showing all of the major sports channels. Such a dood place though...haha. I saw maybe a handful of women. Service was awesome...no issues there whatsoever. $18 for a huge pizza and 2 drinks? Score! read more

Happy hour from 4-7 is GREAT here. You can get a gourmet pizza and a few cocktails for about $30.00. Good wine selection....but the wine always tastes a little off for some reason. The servers don't know anything about the wine.... And .... Dress .... Well .... A Little on the scandales side. BFAST AND HAPPY HOUR is my recommendation.
