It was such a beautiful day.... where can we eat outside? I found "The Spot", its in the old Smee's location on the river. When we showed up, we asked if we could sit at a table outside, the guy was a little overwhelmed, he said "I can sit you in 10 mins". I said "can we have this table". OK, but....just know I'll be with you as soon as I get caught up, I'm totally fine with that I said. . He bought us a couple menus to look over. Then a table on the railing with shade opened up, I didn't care about the table was dirty with dishes, so we decided to move. I love to look at the river and watch the people go by. The server said, I'll be over soon! He was never so happy when Sierra showed up to help him out. He came over to our table I said "I hope you don't mind, I moved to be in the shade, I know I'm one of those pain in the ass customers". Then he started joking with me and it was the perfect ice breaker. My server and part owner's name is Casey! He is an awesome guy and such a hard worker to ensure his customers are taken care of. I love that. We had a couple beers, he has quite the selection of beers on tap, he supports the community breweries such as Lead Dog and Revisions. My husband had the breakfast burrito $13, it was huge with homemade tortilla chips with salad and guacamole. I had the fish and chips. You get three large pieces of fish, fries and yummy coleslaw. I love how they put the tater sauce and ketchups in personal cups for you that shows class. My fish was absolutely delicious better than the old Smees and especially the new location. You get a nice meal for $20. They have indoor, outdoor, bar seating. They have a little merch area and a gaming bar if you feel lucky. I know the Open Championship Bowlers are in town, if you're looking for nice comfort food "tavern style" location this is the place for you on the Reno Riverwalk 50 N Sierra. It upstairs. read more

My mom had an appointment off of Wells Avenue and we're pretty hungry by the time it was over so I looked on Yelp for some lunch options. I was definitely in the mood to try something new. After some searching The Spot is what caught our eye. Located by the river and where Reef and Smees used to be. including what you ordered or used, Since this was a new spot we decided to just order and share a ton of appetizers. This included: cup of cream of mushroom soup, pretzel bites, spinach dip, poutine fries and Brussel sprouts. 2/5 were a huge hit where the orders we would not try again. Cup of mushroom soup: cup size is a good appetizer portion, good mushroom taste but WAY too salty. Would not order again. Pretzel bites: SUPER YUM! Slightly crunchy at the corners and fluffy inside. Perfectly bite sized and great dips (cheese and mustard). Loved these and would absolutely order again. Spinach dip: not a fan. The one thing I did like about this is that the dip portion was extremely generous, but I was not a fan of the taste. For me it was like slightly watered down sour cream. You have the options of chips or baguette. We went with baguette and for the first time in my life, the dipping vessels were very scant compared to the amount of dip so if anyone orders this, I would recommend it with chips. Would not order again. Poutine fries: YUM! Definitely a shareable portion. Thin fries topped with yummy breaded cheese curds and piping hot gravy this was my favorite thing. The gravy was perfectly salted and I loved the breaded cheese curds. I do wish the fries were thicker, like a wedge cut but honestly these were insanely good. Will order again. Brussel sprouts: made with bacon which is always a must for that yummy flavor. Also drizzled with balsamic which is a win in my book. These were very tender and delicious but very oily or greasy which kind of gave me the ick but flavor was definitely there. Will not order again. We were seated immediately upon arriving and waters were brought out. Orders were taken quickly and food came out quick! However after the food came out, no one came to check on us, see how we were doing or clear plates. We were always having to flag someone down for refills, napkins and the check. It wasn't busy. The inside is clean, has a large bar area and outdoor seating. Also lots of TVs. I don't think I'll be returning, but I do recommend the poutine fries and pretzel bites. Things to note: Have to walk up stairs to enter. We wanted to give this place another chance after a disappointing visit a few months ago where the service was painfully slow (25-40 minutes between drinks, ordering, and food). Unfortunately, this second experience was even worse. We visited as a group of four during the Reno Wine Walk. One person in our group does not drink alcohol, and we were explicitly assured by the Home Means Nevada company at the starting location that every participating bar would have non-alcoholic options available. When we asked, the front desk guy grabbed the manager and he informed us we'd have to pay full price for a non alcoholic beer. He then went on an entirely unnecessary monologue about how the business makes "no money" from the wine walk and claims they do it out of the "kindness of their hearts." We completely understand the economics of a wine walk, which is exactly why we checked beforehand to ensure our non-drinking friend would be accommodated. No other bar on the walk had an issue with this. Hoping to salvage the afternoon, we asked if we could sit down for food (since the restaurant was slow). The front desk guy gestured to the menus and said "I mean sure" and told us to grab menus and seat ourselves. The menu stack happened to be under a host's phone and keys. While holding our items and wine glasses we tried to pull out menus, as he watched us struggling to grab them as our hands were full and a hosts personal items were on top of the stack, we knocked over a glass. As we scrambled to help clean up and keep the host's items from getting wet from the spill, the front desk guy sarcastically snapped, "Uh, can I get those back?" as if we were trying to steal the employee's personal belongings. As working professionals in the local community, we were highly offended by how we were treated. There is a severe lack of basic hospitality, kindness, and respect here. Very interesting place. Went here for happy hour, but the website is wrong and there was no happy hour...but they had football specials. Either way this worked out, as we decided to split a smash burger and hubs beer was on the football list of drinks. I got an IPA..it was only 8 dollars normal price. The place inside is small, and it was cold outside, yet people still weathered the outside to see the river. The bartenders were doing a great job with service. Out food was very good and we loved the French fries. It got chaotic at the end, as a bar crawl of some type showed up and overwhelmed the staff...not their fault. We came to The Spot to watch a basketball game and have some appetizers. Such a nice experience from the atmosphere to the appetizers. The restaurant and bar have great seating and a nice patio! Was super excited to try this place out since it is right on the river. Place has a lot of potential but maybe a couple learning curves. The good: right on the river and close to lots of things downtown with a wide selection of food to choose from. The opportunity for improvement: service was ridiculous slow, it was a weekend night but the place was not busy when we were seated. Waitresses (young girl) definitely wasn't very attentive and the drinks and food took a long time to come out. When the check was brought out we were told due to a large party 20% tip was automatically applied. It made me wonder if our group was not served in a timely fashion because she knew she was getting a 20% tip no matter what. Stopped by The Spot for some food and drinks and ended up having a really nice evening! They had a one-man band performing while we were there, which gave the place a great vibe , laid-back but lively at the same time. It definitely made the experience feel a bit more special. We've been here a few times. Location is great. Service staff are very nice. Ordered the Chopped Wedge Salad and special fish sandwich with fries. My wedge salad was a 3.0. Lots of chopped lettuce and raw red onions. Blue cheese was not the best. Had the consistency of feta, but tasted like dry blue cheese. Not a lot of it. Bacon was paper thin. Wedge salad should have thick bacon ( in my opinion). Salad dressing was very thick, but it was good. Ask for extra to cover all that lettuce. Husband had the sandwich and he liked it. I'm not sure what was more surprising - the hairs on multiple wings or the oversized leg of the pieces , that ruined me. The margarita was a silver lining, but at $18 each, it was a bit of a 'fowl' move . So second visit to the spot. First visit went pretty great and this time was ALMOST right on the money, but specifically the calamari was totally different from our first visit. I'll keep my rating as it stands as maybe this was an off day or there was some issues with deliveries, but the first time the calamari was crispy and tasty, and even had rings and tentacles. This time the calamari was just what appeared to be more like chunks and was pretty disappointing, but to be fair the other food was all still great. Specifically really enjoyed the cheese curds with a nice cold beer. Came here during the summer with a friend and we were able to snag an outside table. This place has a lot going for it right on the river with a good variety of small bites and shareable plates. My friend had been before and raved about it but the day we went - must have been an off day. Service took longer outside than one might hope for and the food came out pretty bland. I tried this place for lunch when i saw that they offered fish tacos. That was a mistake. This location is where the old Smee's fish house was. It's a great location overlooking the truckee river. Unfortunately the new ownership went with sports bar motif instead something more upscale. Does reno really need yet another sports bar/pub, this one with slot machines? The fish tacos were terrible. They were grilled mahi mahi but clearly they were thawed from frozen and charred dry on a grill. They were super salty and served with chopped romaine and just a hint of some sort of taco sauce. No cabbage, no baja sauce, no pico or mango accents. Just pretty dry and barren fish pieces (not filets). Throw 6 tortilla chips on the plate with a micro cup of salsa and that was it. Ultimately when trying a new dish or place i ask myself at the end ... would i order that again? For these tacos that is a strong no. Places like this just reinforce my rule about bar food. Restaurants generally have flavorful food but weak drinks. Bars generally focus on overpriced drinks and have mediocre food. This food was mediocre at best. Oh how I wanted to love this place, but it was not a great experience. Let me start by saying I rarely give less than 3 stars. I was so excited to try The Spot because we finally have a more affordable place with river views downtown. I made a reservation for a Thursday night but the patio is first come first serve. We snagged the last patio table and had a wonderful view! They brought a high chair for our baby and things started off great. We ordered some cocktails and beers, took a little longer than expected to have them brought out but no big deal. We ordered an appetizer which came out at an appropriate time. We got the calamari, it was good but a pretty small serving size. Thank goodness we got an appetizer because the experience went downhill from there. We got there at 6:30pm and our food did not come out until 8pm! We finally asked around 7:45 how much longer it would be and they said at least another 10 minutes. The waiter told us they only have one cook in the kitchen, so it's very backed up. This was surprising because the whole patio was full and they had live music, so how could you not be prepared for the dinner crowd with just one cook? We waited an absurd amount of time and ended up spending a full two hours here which was not the plan since we had a baby with us. When the food finally came out, the tacos that came with chips, salsa, and guac according to the menu were laughable. There were literally 5-6 chips on the plate and no salsa or guac. The waiter told us the cook "86'd the guac" meaning it wasn't being served with this dish anymore. We later found out it was because the avocados were still frozen. He did bring out a side of chips and some salsa for me. I got the carne asada tacos, the meat itself was delicious! However, the tacos were pretty sad with not much else on them. There was cilantro but the Caramelized onions that were supposed to come on them were basically invisible, I think I only saw one piece out of all three tacos. Everyone else at the table had great things to say about their food, thankfully. We had guests with us and they were full and satisfied with their meals, when they finally came. I would say all of the blame is on the cook and the horrendous wait times. Our waiter, Riley, was actually great at checking in on us and apologizing for the wait. He helped us try to keep things lighthearted as the wait time progressed, knowing it was out of his control but he still wanted us to have a good experience. If you're going to make your waiters be put in uncomfortable situations like this where they have to be the ones facing the upset customers because of your cook, they deserve a raise. Riley was wonderful and I wish this review rating was able to reflect his service. However, the terrible wait times and the sad dish of food that was brought out for me cannot be more than 2 stars. The excellent river view and affordable prices make me want to come back to give them another try, especially since so many reviews are hit or miss--several 1-2 stars but also many 5 stars. I still don't think I'd risk it if this was my experience on a Thursday, not even a busy weekend. I would come back for drinks on the patio but hope they make some big changes in the kitchen before I try to order food here again. read more

I kept trying to get the waiter attention but no luck there. By the time I got his attention I was down to one taco left and no chips. When he finally came I inquired about the guacamole and he replied, "oh you didn't get your guacamole?" I don't know who he was expecting to serve it if it wasn't him? Before he he left I asked him for some more chips (btw they weren't that great, rather greasy). He came back with the guacamole which was a very small little cup of watery guacamole and a small bowl of chips. Which he then tells me there's a $3 charge for the extra chips. My wife enjoyed her tacos but I didn't care for the carne asada. The meat was on the tough side and they had an odd flavor and way too spicy. So the wife and I saw this place on the news. We were walking downtown and stopped by for lunch. They were super welcoming and super friendly. They have good beers on tap and other drinks. Also a good cocktail menu. The outdoor patio sits right next to beautiful river. The place has a cool laidback vibe. The food was super good the fried pickles were nice lightly breaded. A young gentleman from Romania I believe greeted me and the man of the hour, "One Shot" gave me the best service. I noticed dogs are allowed inside and out side which I love. My brother-in-law was in town and we were looking for a place for happy hour on Saturday. When The Spot came up in a search, I was surprised because I hadn't heard of it before! But the reviews were great so we decided to check it out. Located along the river (where Smee's Alasakan Fish Bar used to be), we found The Spot to be a very welcoming sports bar/restaurant. It was pretty lively when we walked in, with many seats already taken and different sporting events playing on their many TVs. Since there were only few bar seats open, I asked if we could sit at a table for happy hour. Absolutely! So we snagged a table. They have a pretty good happy hour with both drink and food specials. My husband and I were happy to see Revision Disco Ninja Hazy IPA on the menu so we got those while my brother-in-law got the West Coast IPA. For food, we had so much!! We all loved the firecracker shrimp (really good), the guys both enjoyed the hot wings, we shared both the caesar and chopped wedge salads, and I tried the jackfruit mini quesadillas. The food was great as was the friendly service! And we were happy to see all the sports available to watch. They even changed a channel on one of the TVs to a game my husband was interested in. The only thing that was slightly off was the loud music which made it a bit hard to hear our conversations. But we will be back! read more

Great find by the River! We were bar hopping downtown when the live music from The Spot drew us in -- shoutout to The Wreckords from Truckee, they were incredible. The Bulgogi steak sandwich was next-level delicious, and I'm already planning a round two. The chef (wish I caught his name!) came out to chat, and you can tell he's passionate about what he's creating. Service was great, and the old fashioned hit the spot. Our server, while she was super nice, spent the majority of her time socializing with her friends (one of which was vaping inside the restaurant the whole time) at the other end of the bar completely ignoring the other side. This had been a common occurrence when we come, friends of the bartender set up shop and end up hanging out there. She came around once in a while, which was ok I guess. We do like it here having been here several times. The food is for the most part good, the fries being the exception this time, and will be back but the service is consistently lacking. Stopped by for lunch and glad we did. This spot has seen a myriad of restaurants serving up a long list of various cuisines. This one feels like a good match for the location. What was previously Smee's a seafood restaurant, is now a sports bar with a really good menu that has a nice range of choices. A nice list of bites, salads, sandwiches, and tacos. My husband ordered a Hazy Little IPA and Poutine - yes, the Canadian National Dish. I had an Arnold Palmer and the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with fries. All was very good and the servings were quite generous. Nikki, the lone server, was friendly and efficient, greeted us and brought drinks right away, got our food to us in a timely manner, and checked on our satisfaction and refilled our drinks while also waiting on two tables outside, and a group wanting to taste wine options. First and foremost, we loved the vibes. A chill and relaxed mountain-vibe, which was a big plus. Service was attentive and everyone was so exceptionally nice and inviting! And most importantly, the FOOD. The American-fusion concept is very evident by a majority of menu items, which sparked my interest. My husband opted for the Steak Bulgogi sandwich, and after his first bite he immediately exclaimed, "this is the BEST". I had a taste too, and I have to agree 10x over. It was very reminiscent of a Bahn mi, but with Korean Bulgogi and an American flare. I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich, which was DELICIOUS. The chicken breast was beautifully seasoned and the addition of the sesame sauce was so complimentary. It was dripping in sauce, which was divine. There's also a coleslaw that added a flare, and also created a unique texture that I certainly appreciated. We can't wait to be back, and I can't wait to try their all day breakfast.
