Sierra Trading Post is an excellent outdoors equipment and clothing company. I used to shop at their old store location all the time. However, the new store, while it is very nice, carries way less stuff. The layout of the store is too spacious IMO. There is just way too much space for what little inventory they carry in the store. Also the footwear section is a mess. They really need seating where the shoes are, not shoved off to the side. I rarely find items I need in store, but I do find them online. It is, however, convenient to be able to return online purchases to the store! I suggest checking out their online site they have SO much more! You can also have items shipped to store for pickup. I personal,y prefer shopping in-person at other outdoors retail stores in town over this one. read more

My wallet was in serious danger when I went into this store. I've shopped Sierra trading post online several times, but made the mistake of stopping by to grab some hiking socks. Let's just say hiking socks turned into workout gear from the clearance racks, a bikini, and hiking pants. Whoops. I loved the selection of items they had and the prices are unbeatable. read more

I totally agree with the many previous reviewers that this store is "hit or miss." It is, and there have been plenty of times when I have left frustrated with nothing to show for my shopping experience. However, there have been even more times that I have walked out of here with KILLER deals. I get nearly all of my shoes here for that reason. My favorite place to look is the "thirds" section, where they sell barely-used catalog returns at ridiculously low prices. I've also found all of my hiking gear here for much less than I would pay at Patagonia or REI. But, if there is something specific that you need right away, you will probably not enjoy coming to Sierra Trading Post and digging around for a deal. read more

Five years or so ago, you wouldn't find me in this store. Or any outdoorsy store for that matter. But somewhere along the way, I've evolved, and I have been spending more time outside. And as such, I need some proper attire and well...gear. Enter Sierra Trading Post. I like that they always have a sale, or a coupon I receive in the mail or online, which I can easily pull up. They have a good selection, albeit a little limited. But, not to worry, you can shop online and have it delivered to the store, free of shipping charge. If it the merchandise don't fit, or not to your liking, you can return them to the store, no questions asked. I've since bought a few items from this store ~ shoes, jackets, gloves, hiking pants, socks, etc. I've always been happy with my experience there. I highly recommend you check them out, especially if you need some outdoorsy merchandise. read more

Not what it used to be. I've been going here for over 15 years. They used to have a great sunglass counter with amazing deals on high quality eyewear, a huge selection winter sports gear to look through, a shoe department with american-made boots, and awesome customer service as well. Now the store is extremely unorganized. The shoe dept has nothing but cheap chinese made shoes in piles on the floor. No more sunglasses, skis, snow boots, sports gear. Nobody on the sales floor offering help. For some reason they now sell cheap candles and mouthwash though if you want those instead. read more

I'm posting this mostly because I've been an REI member for decades, and have learned recently that I should always come check Sierra Trading Post before spending money at REI. I recently stocked up on backpacking gear--tents, backpacks, stoves, and even freeze-dried food. I drove back and forth between STP and REI here in Reno, before finally buying all of my gear at STP and saving about $400 of what I would have paid in REI. There is a trade-off: a lot of the gear is stuff that is last year's model at REI. But for backpacks and tents, who cares? The gear I got here was phenomenal in the wilderness. I also loved the service at this place--they matched some of their online outlet's discounts, so I saved about 30% over the in-store prices. Overall I was very impressed by Sierra Trading Post. read more

I have been a big fan of STP online. So when I found out that there's an actual store in Reno, I had to go. The store is big and staff there was very friendly and helpful. The guy who helped us with ski googles told us that the company was nice to the employees, he got reimbusements for his college tuition. They have a big selection of apparel and shoes. You probably will get better prices buying online since they have free shipping, no tax(for some states), and frequent online promotions. But everything at the store is discounted so the prices are better than other retail stores. And you can't beat the free popcorns! read more

Funky store layout for an outdoor store, you walk in not quite sure what to expect. Product is haphazardly displayed and is not very organized. However, the deals are there. If you sign up for their email notifications you can get additional discounts to what the store offers, well worth checking out. If you want any help you need to hunt down an employee. This is an outdoorsy, athletic-type store outlet store offering a surprising and unique grab bag of high-end brands at a discount and fashionable surprises in between Whole Foods and Pier 1 in South Reno. Along with hippie-chic outfits your sister's hacky-sack playing roommate would adore, there are also great discounts on Prana yoga gear, Manduka yoga mats at almost 50% off retail (yes, they're all orange, but so what?), down coats, ski pants, and hiking gear, just for starters. Recently I've snagged a sample Steve McQueen messenger bag and a lovely denim jacket, both at 75% off retail. Non-skiers and outdoor recreation haters will still find a wide selection of items to pique their interest: swimwear, running gear, European shoes, unique socks, sleepwear, home items, etc. They offer men's, children, and women's clothing and what the brick-and-mortar store offers is just a fraction of what is offered online. I have found so many deals here that I can't say enough about the store. We purchase a lot on-line from ST via catalogues but the store has so much stuff that never makes it that far (by the way, slow down on the catalogues a little will you? Dude. Seriously. I'm an online STP addict, and when I found out that they have a store 2 hours away from Sacramento, I had to go. I saved over $300 on a purchase a little over $100. Worth it? Yes. I backpack and camp with my dogs and was looking to upgrade some equipment and they had a majority of what I was looking for. It was a miss for the boots, but what do you expect from a discount retail store? They are owned by the same company that owns TJ Maxx and Marshall's, so treat shopping here like you would there. Don't look for anything specific, and be happy with the deals you find! Tip: they accept the online coupons in the store. read more

One of my favorite sporting goods mail order places, and went by their outlet so had to stop by. Only had 2 pairs of the same goggles in the whole store and they were not a great deal. I was expecting a much better supply of ski gear they failed in this respect. The store is very neatly arranged and pleasing to walk around, but only worth stopping in if you are going by here. This place is a joke. I used to frequent Trading Post years ago but they've lost their way. I can buy first quality gear at REI and barely pay a premium over their second quality stuff, or I can go to the Patagonia outlet and find tremendous value on second quality stuff which is still in-style. At Trading Post, I get neither. Dated styles on overpriced seconds hardly makes for a good shopping experience. The store is clean and the help is friendly but I've stopped coming here completely because Reno has so much more to offer. read more

While the overall selection is pitiful compared to other big name stores in the area, the prices are dirt cheap for Carhartts, shirts, boots, and other items. The low score is due to the screwed up computer system. We spent $400 on pant, shirts and boots (other stores would have charged $1100 for the same items...) and were double billed by the computer. This is not normally a problem, but we were told by the cashier AND the manager that the charge did not go through. Sorry folks, if you do that much business and your computer cash register system is screwed up, TURN IT OFF until you get it fixed and TESTED! Buyers beware! I went there looking for a mat and an inflatable pillow and taylor was one of the most helpful people I've ever met. She took the time to track down all of the pillows in the store for me and gave me suggestions for online purchasing. Then I found a pair of shorts in the wrong size, and using her advice I went up to ask if I could order it online to the store. It was out of stock but the size I wanted was somewhere in the store and it took taylor less than 2 minutes to find it! She's awesome! read more

I was a loyal customer of STP for over 20 years and they sent me a a very snotty email that I returned too many items and they no longer wanted me. when I tried to follow up with them they ignored me. this used to be a good company, not sure what has happened, I would be wary and avoid them at all costs. read more

I had an amazing experience with the the Sierra Trading Post website before going into the store. When I walked in here, I wasn't even greeted. There were about 80% of their employees all congregating at the front registers when no one was in line. No one working here had any knowledge of snowboarding boots not to mention that only had 5 different boots in stock for women! Also the manager here, Liz, doesn't know how to treat customers or solve issues. I actually completed their survey that I was emailed and Liz called me and left a voicemail apologizing that she couldn't give me a discount...she didn't mention anything about the horrible experience I had in her store! The only pair of boots in my size were obviously used (marks all over and stained liners) not to mention 3 years old and she wouldn't offer any discount!! Boots were priced at $167!! Needless to say, I will not be returning...even for the annoying 25% off coupons they email me every week!! If you want customer service and knowledgeable staff go somewhere else or go to their website. Surprisingly, their chat service online is better! read more

What can I say? These guys are GREAT! I bought a rather high ticket item (Canoe) from their on-line store. It came in and was a bit bigger and heavier than I had anticipated. I wanted to solo it, but it was just a bear for one person to handle. I called them, they said, "sure, bring it in to any of our stores or send it back via UPS, which they offered to arrange (but I'd have to pay). I decided to drive it back to their Reno store as it was the closest one to me in the SF Bay Area. All the way up I had envisioned a hassle and had planned a mindset accordingly. I got there, told them what I had and they said just bring it and an we'll refund your money in whatever way you paid for it! NO QUESTIONS ASKED! The guy behind the counter even helped me unstrap it from my truck and carry it in. Got my refund and I was on my way in less that 15 minutes. I will look to Sierra Trading Post FIRST for all my outdoor gear from here on out! Finally, a store which offers quality stuff at decent prices and stands by their word! A+ in my book! read more

Their customer service is 2nd to none! I was trying to located a shirt needed for a team event. The first shirt I ordered was too small so I sent it back for an exchange. In checking on the exchange status, I learned there were no larger sizes available online. I was the only one on our team without the shirt... The customer service rep tried to help but there was no inventory showing in her system. 10 minutes later, she calls me back and says she contacted several retail stores out of her area and found the shirt in my size. I was expecting it to take a few days....the shirt arrived at my doorstep the next day. Amazing! read more

The store is worth stopping by if you find yourself in the area. Especially because the new location is right next to Whole Foods, I find myself popping in anytime I'm in town. You really have to dig around to find a good deal and often they just don't have my sizes. All that is left is the XXL or XS. However, I have found some good buys there - Carhartt pants, some long underwear etc. In any case, the store is similar to their website - lot of items but only few that are actually a good deal and something that you would want to wear. Lot of their items are just left overs from previous seasons. Also, the good stuff sell fast. I bought a pair of Keens online which was a great deal. However, they were too big and I tried to get a smaller size only days later. Unfortunately, all but the smallest sizes were gone. So, go check it out and you might get a deal; however, don't count on it. read more

I live an hour and 30 minutes away from the nearest store in Reno, so I do quite a bit of shopping online. (don't always have the items I want or am looking for in the store) and then return items that don't fit or seem inferior in quality. I recently stopped getting the deal flyer email which contains the "deals" and was told that they stopped sending them to me because I return items... "No Marketing - High Return Rate" . When I order online I order several different sizes because the sizing of their items varies GREATLY! I return the items that don't fit when I make a trip to Reno- easier than using mail returns...I do the same with REI and don't have ANY problems returning there...I have spent A LOT of money at Sierra Trading Post, probably more than at REI, but looks like REI will be getting more, if not all my business now...I might shop in their store if it didn't seem so unorganized and they had more sizes (if you're really small it's great), plus the temp of the store seems warm, which is not conducive to trying on clothes. Plus their inventory seems always low and the brands are hit and miss and without the "deal flyer" discount, I can get it for a better price elsewhere! Not worth the hassle of going to the store (also customer service and knowledgable sales people are almost nonexistent).....PLUS, they did not even give me the common courtesy of informing me of their "policy" of exclusion......guess I'll be spending my money elsewhere (and I have spent A LOT there!) read more
