I took my 19 year old cat there a few weeks ago. He had only been to the vet once before and it didn't go well. He had a horrible ear mite problem and had a nasty sinus infection because of it. I had been treating his ears with ear mite medication from online, but it just kept coming back. When I took him in, I wasn't so sure that I wouldn't have to have him put down - that's how bad it was. The vet couldn't not have been nicer. He really liked her right off the bat, which was a relief in itself. She took a sample from his ear, checked it in their lab and told me it was no big deal. Communication, The last time, Vet didn't tell me what he thought was wrong with my dog. They gave me some pills. Which seemed to work. They didn't say when, or if the medication should be refilled. My 8 yr old female cat was ill and we took her in. When they ran tests they found she has a urinary tract infection. Everyone was caring and explained everything as we went along. They were very efficient and asked us how we wanted to proceed with treatment. We were also taken into a room at the time of our appointment which can be difficult at times in a veterinary office, just as it is in human medicine. Until tests are run and results are known, no one knows if or what concerns need to be addressed. In the many years I have been going there, I have found the care to be excellent. They have moved and shuffled their entire days around to get my animals' needs met. Even our python, Jimmy, was rehabilitated here with so much care. Every time I go there, miss Laurie knows me and my animals and smiles when she sees us. Minus the snake, but that's fair. The vet techs accept him ;) They're just a great group of people that really want to rise above and do the right thing for people and their animals. My experience with Sierra Vet was absolutely HORRIBLE. The only time I ever saw an actual veterinarian was at the very first visit, when they told me my dog needed TPLO surgery. After spending $6,000, every single follow-up was only with technicians--never the vet. I was charged for four separate sets of x-rays, yet not once did anyone go over the results with me. At the final visit, they tried to charge me an additional $538 for an x-ray I had already paid for. On top of that, they kept my dog there for over 9.5 hours for what should have been a simple follow-up x-ray. When I called to check in, I was told they don't call owners until pets are ready to go home. I asked why it was taking so long, and they said emergencies pushed my dog back. If that was the case, why not reschedule instead of keeping her locked up for nearly 10 hours? This clinic clearly cares more about money than the well-being of the animals. We tried to give this vet another chance. Maybe things have changed . We attempted to schedule an appointment for our cat. They informed us no regular appointments available, but they did have emergency appointment times available for an extra fee what was fine with us. After being placed on hold for an extended period, They said there was a computer glitch that had occurred . The veterinarian staff stated that now there was no longer any emergency appointments available. I was simply provided a phone number of another veterinarian clinic 65 minute drive away while I understand the unfortunate issues the lack of proactive problem solving or empathy in this situation was disappointing with no immediate solution for our pets urgent needs. I'm writing this with a heavy heart as I'm still grieving Gizmo who died just this past Friday, I WAS NOT going to do this review nor other things as I was advised to do after we got a letter today out of left field that Stinged and was hurtful and to us still doesn't make sense! Knowing we just loss Gizmo just a few days ago, I think it was unprofessional, uncaring and heartless! Few weeks before Gizmo died I have asked more than once for my 3 cat babies records, I kept getting the run around saying manager Marissa and the doctor had to approve it which to us was ridiculous and asinine! We waited and waited so of course we had to send emails and call which we NEVER knew who we were talking to and different ppl read and replied to the emails, calls were a joke as you were always put on hold! FINALLY today I got some records and not all so we had to call again and we decided to go there because the files they were sending were not opening up! Before my husband left as I was in the car frustrated because it seemed they can't do anything right, Curtis came to the car with a letter, I opened it and it was a letter saying they were releasing us from care, WHAT! WE were like what is this and why are we getting this, Curtis called the manager Laurie as we were confused but she said someone will call and hung up on my husband! Mind you I thought this was a card about Gizmo passing so it floored us and upset us to push that knife even further in while we are grieving! Lets be honsst here, i been trying to contact a owner of SVH because i had some concerns to be honest, one they are like a revolving door there that I felt Gizmo fell between the cracks and I know he did, last Month he was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease, by phone call and email we were told stage 2, we went in weekly getting fluids among other things trying to save our cat and at one recent appointment we were told by Doctor Bellgrau that opps I'm sorry he's really in stage 3, how we got her as his doctor from Doctor Lewis I DO NOT know, at every appointment I asked are we there yet where we have to think about euthanasia, we were told no to keep trying this, mind you he was losing weight rapidly and no one thought anything of that! At that point I felt something isn't right, I sit there watching their phone go off like crazy, I watch patients come and go and thought my GOD it's all for profit and Gizmo is falling between the cracks, SVH was not like this when Gary owned it but it showed it was all about making money so I myself looked for another place and got a second opinion, I found a feline only hospital which was VCA in Reno and wish I found them sooner as his doctor was on top of things and it was confirmed GIZMO did INDEED fall between the cracks, one his blood pressure was never checked, we were told the wrong information how to do the appetite stimulate, we were not told what to watch for after he gets his fluids, we were not told SO MANY things which angered us, because of not being told any of this and SVH not being concerned we felt we were given false hope! We maxed our credit cards, borrowed money to save Gizmo due to the false hope! The feline hospital in Reno immediately ordered labs and exrays which SVH SHOULD had done because his doctor was like something is going on , this is unusual, there was, he was now stage 4 end stage of kidney failure! Gizmo suffered more than he had to due to SVH not taking him serious or the fact they were incompetent in my eyes now! Gizmo was euthanized this past Friday because it was the right thing to do and because how bad he was which SVH never told us, instead they took our money which seemed more important! SVH lost their core values, changed all for profit, and forgot about what they learned in vet school! Getting the letter today I guess was a blessing because it allowed me to get this off my chest, I contacted a former owner today and said what happened and they recommend calling the BBB, the State board and not bother with Doctor Kidder because he no longer cares as the owner, it was a shock to hear so those are my next steps as I know talking to Kidder about any of this won't help, it's already all about money over pets health and that's sad and disgusting! I would strongly urge everyone NOT to come here and if you have a cat to go to VCA Feline hospital in reno where doctors are more educated, care more and have compassion! And guess what VCA ISNT a revolving door! As we grieve, we wonder how many more GIZMOS fell between the cracks and died at SVH! We'll never know! My cat was very sick, was being treated at Carson Tahoe Vet (do not recommend.) I woke up and heard my cat wheezing and howling in pain. I drove to Sierra Vet as fast as I could without an appointment. My cat passed away in my car. They still took him to the back immediately and tried to resuscitate him, unfortunately they were unsuccessful. They brought me to a private room to grieve and asked if I wanted to spend time with my boy. Dr. Kidder sat with me for a few in the room to comfort me. I don't think I ever want to take any of my animals to anyone else. He was so kind and caring. At the end of it all, they didn't even charge me for an emergency visit or them trying to resuscitate. I opted to have my boy cremated, they cremate in house and in my opinion, their price for cremation is very reasonable compared to other prices I've paid. read more

My daughter took her kitten to Sierra vet on August 4th due to an area that looked like ringworm to us. She said he did a very thorough examination which took him a while. His diagnosis was a skin infection. So he gave her some ointment and with the visit and the ointment it was $158. So she used that ointment, quit using the athlete's foot ointment since he said it was not ringworm. 11 to 12 Days later our other kitten had ringworm. Therefore his diagnosis was incorrect his treatment was incorrect we had done one lime dip and he said we didn't need to do that because it wasn't ringworm so we didn't continue now we have done lime dip for 2 weeks. And the cat who didn't have the ringworm initially now has several spots. So now we have to pay another vet to figure out what else to do besides the sulfur lime dip in the athlete's foot ointment. If we had gotten it correct diagnosis on August 4th 2nd cat may not have gotten the ringworm. Very disappointed. read more

DO NOT bring your animal here. They're extremely money hungry and do not truly care about the well-being of your animal. They will terrorize you until you've given them a payment, while you're in tears, and anxious over your sick pet. I brought my 12 year old cat in (knowing she was anemic). She had very obvious signs, she was dizzy, falling over, weak, lethargic, not meowing, etc. I asked for them to please run labs, give me a proper diagnosis, and to please be honest about what was BEST for my baby. To keep her overnight, etc. They ran the test, told me she was severely anemic (duh) and gave me an "intense" steroid, told me they were hopeful, that she would be ok, not to consider euthanasia, that she had a chance, , that they've seen plenty of cats bounce back, gave her IV fluids, charged me $600, and sent me on my way. Not even 12 hour's later, my babygirl was on her last few breaths..... I found her on the couch, non responsive, holding on for her life. I rushed her back to Sierra Vet and as soon as I got there, they asked if I wanted to do CPR and followed with "okay there's a $500 deposit and I need that card information now." Again, money hungry. I agreed (who wouldn't). I wanted to save my baby. They performed CPR, charged me the $500, came back to the room, and told me they suggested I put her down, which of course, wasn't free, but just another $200. My overall bill was $1900 in total. For NOTHING. I'm left heartbroken and my babygirl is no longer here. In less than 12 hours... It's not about the money for ME personally, it's that I felt pain, stress, hurt, and all they cared about was "running the hospital." It's that my baby suffered those last few hours of her life, that she needed more than what they suggested, and that I was truly given false hope by their awful veterinarians. I will NEVER ever recommend nor take another animal here again. Please save your animal and save your time. Go elsewhere. read more

My Border was very lame. My regular vet couldn't see her for a week. Called Sierra and I had an appointment within 2 hours. All of the staff was very helpful and kind. The vet tech was awesome and quickly moved through check in process. Before I knew it Dr Jacob was examining my dog. Was in the cattle business for years have worked with lots of vets and Dr Jacob's approach was professional and obviously not trying to conduct all kinds of test initially. NO COMPASSION HERE! The orange cat was Goonie, he passed about 3 years ago. Today we sent Kitty Fo to be with Goonie. Kitty Fo was over 17 years old & very sick. They were both rescues who were best buds! . Kitty Fo's passing was peaceful and painless. We were there loving on her till the end. The ordeal at Sierra Veterinary Hospital in Carson City was demeaning & demoralizing. We were not told the price when I made the appointment & and it was outrageous. Over $260 which included an $90 exam fee. No temp, no weight taken the Vet just touched Kitty Fo's belly. We asked that no exam or treatment be administered as we did not want to prolong her suffering. No need, She was visibly sick, & not moving well. When you live on a limited income $ 260 is a lot of money to go out in the first week of the month. We pleaded with them to let us pay $160 today & the rest next month. We were back & forth between the office manager who talked to the Vet trying to find a solution. Finally we took an out that left us feeling so powerfully sad & angry. The office manager said the Doctor has final 2 options. First one, they put the cat down charge us a 100 dollars and they keep fo's body The second option was to pay the $90 for the exam and leave with our dying Kitty Fo and to find another veterinary to do the euthanasia.We felt this was an ultimatum. Me & my girlfriend discussed it and agreed do to our economic reality to take the 1st offer. Not understanding why the Vet did not want to work with us on a payment plan and wanted us to Leave the body of our dead family member? I had plans to bury Kitty Fo in the back yard next to her best buddy Goonie. We know that dead bodies are what they are. Empty of life! But this final ritual of burial was denied to me. I feel so shamed & angry. I discussed the options of cremation and it was $300 when we first went in. So I told the Doctor I opted to bury Kitty Fo next to Goonie. We had Goonie put to sleep at the same clinic years before. We have taken our Lab, Waylon there numerous times. So we are a long time client. We weren't really arguing about the price we just didn't have that much money on hand. Why wouldn't the vet come talk to us personally? Why when we made the appointment in the morning no one told us about the cost? Why did they want Fo's body? All our receipt says is euthanasia, no name no information just $100. When you have to say goodbye to your loved one I really don't think this is what they would want to deal with. Our hearts broken and feel like we we're backed into a corner. So in summary, I do not recommend anyone take their pets to this Veterinary Hospital. They are unethical, they have a lack of economic understanding about working people & the struggle to pay bills & love of their pets! read more

If you care about your animal, I do not recommend bringing them here. 1 star on Yelp says "not good", but that is misleading because I personally believe that they are worse than "not good". My dog was sick so I called them to set an appointment. The office clerk, Kayla, refused to accept my appointment because I was not listed on the account.. the account that I provided all of the correct information for. It only had my partner's name listed as a contact so she used the actual word "refuse" to set the appointment for me. I did not ask for professional advice, I asked to set an appointment for my sick dog. She was incredibly unprofessional with the way she spoke to me and handled the entire situation very poor and rude. There was a rough estimate of what was wrong with our dog, which is understandable. Although I was disappointment with the assessment, Dr. Kidder was very kind and told me to call him if our dog's condition got any worse. Around 6 days later, I called because what we thought was kennel cough was turning into something that sounded worse. Kayla answered again and told me that it was completely booked for the rest of today and it would be around $150 for an emergency visit. I told her it was not an emergency, I was just contacting the vet accordingly since our dog's health was not improving. She then told me she would leave a note for him and have him call me back. A few hours go by and there is no call back, so my partner reached out to them. An office clerk told him the same thing Kayla told me: they were booked for the day, but we could pay to see them if it was an emergency. He asked about appointments for the next day, Friday, and she informed him that they were booked for that date too and that on Saturdays there is no vet in house, so that would not work for an appointment either. She proceeded to recommend to my partner to "just wait a day and see". However, had we waited a day and he still was not better, they were booked on friday, and there was no vet on saturdays so that advise was completely useless and ungenuine. 48 hours after I asked for a call back, they called my partner at 8 PM. We took our dog elsewhere (Carson Valley), and he was treated incredibly well there. Although Dr. Kidder was incredibly kind, him and his team failed our poor sick boy who ended up contracting pneumonia from his kennel cough. Had we waited for their care, who knows what his condition would have ended up being like. They are clearly just trying to see how much money they can get out of you when you're vulnerable instead of genuinely caring for your animal, and they don't hide it well. Their new policy was given to me with an attitude. Take it or leave it. I'm leaving it. There are other home town vets that don't have a big city attitude. AND! I don't trust their vaccines anyway because my dogs got sick several times and needed to see the vet for a cough they didn't have before they got the vaccine. I got reprimanded via email for sending my THIRD email to confirm an appointment and not being so nice about it. I have taken my 3 dogs there over the past 25 years and they have always been wonderful. We had to have our last little dog euthanized recently. Dr Kidder and his staff were thoughtful, gentle and very caring during a stressful and heartbreaking time. We went in a nice room with couches and tables and I was able to hold my little " fur baby" the entire time. We were able to hold him afterward for as long as we wanted. There is a button near the door so you can communicate to the staff if you need anything or when you are ready to leave. They even handled all the paperwork beforehand so we could just quietly leave afterward . They made a difficult day much easier! read more

When I came into the parking lot and called the front desk to let them know I was there, I was told I was late for my 4:30 pm appointment. No! I was right on time for my 4:40 pm appointment. I knew it was a 4:40 pm appointment because I had confirmed that time in two different phone calls and marked it on the calendar and on my phone. The front desk clerk became argumentative and put the veterinarian on the phone who was also argumentative. She said they had lots of new clients to take care of, and I could reschedule or see her with a late fee of $25.00! I don't see why I should pay for a mistake that was made by the person who made the appointment for me. I will reschedule with Sierra Veterinary Hospital when hell freezes over! It's a shame $25.00 was more important than retaining a client, especially a client who has four cats, all of whom are seen at this hospital, and who has spent thousands of dollars there. Well this was not our first visit to Sierra Vet with both of our dogs but we were treated as though it was. What was a little shocking was after explaining on the phone in great detail at the time of making the appointment what we needed done, the visit was PAY IN ADVANCE before they would even give us an appointment. So reluctantly we did it. There was really no examination to speak of. Our vet in Tahoe would always do a thorough exam on every visit. Head to toe. Here was a quick temperature check, look in the dogs mouths, and they asked us a lot of questions about the dogs as if they don't keep records and we had never been there before. They even have an HR person on site, I'm guessing they have a lot of problems with staff? Okay, so they did only what we asked at the time of the making of the appointment for the oral exams (a quick look see), and anal gland expression on one of them (which took them all of 30 seconds) only to find there was more charges before we left. While bringing my cat in they quoted a certain price. Between 500-900 for pulling her teeth (we brought her in for an obvious infection in mouth and sinuses) 5 hours late we get a call that our cat is recovering nicely and our surgery is looking to be about 1400. We of course asked why such a big price difference!?? They said the vet ran behind and the surgery took longer.. no call, no warning.. awesome!! I scheduled an appointment for my 5 month mixed breed Carl for the first time at this office. The staff is very friendly from the time you walk in until you leave. Ok so I didn't actually go to this vet due to my experience on the phone with the front desk person. I called to schedule my puppy's second round of shots she explains they have a "puppy package" and it covers all shots and appts for the first year and the cost ran around $350. I was like yeah sure that works and I asked for a ball park on fixing my dog, we aren't planning on doing it till after the holidays but I was just curious as to the cost. She would not give it up, and kept telling me it depended on his weight. Ok yes I get that but if he's supposed to be like 40 pounds what am I looking at possibly? "It depends on his weight", like we legit went in circles for like 5 minutes. My guess is someone somewhere may have gave a quote over the phone and it wound up costing a lot more but that wasn't quite what I was looking for and that really isn't my issue but the way she kept saying it like I was an idiot. I'm sorry but I'll pass. I wound up with the vet my whole family goes to and their puppy package is half the cost, oh and to fix my dog under 50 pounds should run around $250. I'm sure the vets are great, but you need to have a killer front desk as they are the first line of contact for possible new patients. It might be a better place to go to if the front office person wasn't so nasty to people. I don't understand why you would keep somebody so rude. I, as have others, found another Vet office that is actually happy to do their job. I will never go back to them. read more
