Quoted $600 for a simple AC refrigerant recharge. Billed $800... Last recharge was $195 pre pandemic for a thorough job from a competent, ethical contractor. $600 is high but I understand inflation so I agreed to give local company business. Tech was in and out in less than 45 minutes. Including the time to write bill. No snags, no trip to truck for parts or tools, no temp tests on AC to assure it was running properly. Handed me bill for $800 that only said "No warranty". I questioned the bill and got a lame answer. Once and done. Unless your desperate, look elsewhere. read more

On Easter Sunday, the blower motor on the air handling unit stopped working. We called the next morning, and they were able to figure out the part was under warranty. In these Covid-19 times it is nice to know there are still reliable companies around. I discovered my water heater was leaking and called SILCO as I have used them before several times, and within an hour of my call, Joe from Silco was at my door. He verified the water heater was history, emptied the tank and then quoted me a price and went off to purchase a comparable unit for me. Within half-hour he was hauling it into my cellar and within a few hours the tank was installed and hot water was back. Silco tends to be a little more expensive for some things, but they are dependable if you need work done right away. The only issue, which I discovered while cleaning up after Joe had left, was the new hot water heater has a dent in it on the lower right side. I don't know if this was done as he was moving it into place as the space is tight, but I wish he had told me about it if he was aware of it. It does not seem to affect the operation of the unit, but for the price I paid for a new water heater and installation, an adjustment of some kind would have been a kind gesture. I probably should have checked it more thoroughly before he left, but with social distancing, and trying to let him get the work done without much banter, I did not discover it until he was gone. I would still use Silco again, but I will check the finished work more carefully next time. I still think Joe is top-notch, but I just wish he had told me about the dent if he indeed knew about it. read more

I had been using this company since 1998. However, my last few experiences with them were terrible. After their last employee came out to my house, I will not be using them every again. I had a problem with my hot water valve in my bathroom shower. I called at 8 am and their plumber showed up at 4:15 pm. He took apart the valve and was unable to put it back together. He told me he had to leave because it was 5pm and he would just shut off all the water in my home and come back the next day. I told him this was unacceptable, and that he was not leaving me without water. He pouted and stormed out to his van. I had also explained to the plumber that I had been recently laid off. I told him I would run to home depot and buy the part that was needed. He told me Home Depot products don't work and I should only buy the valve from him, even though it would be more expensive. Already sensing he was disingenuous, I had a raised eyebrow upon any further dealings with this employee. He then told me he estimated it would cost $1200 to fix the issue. When I asked him to explain why fixing a simple valve replacement would be so pricey, he said well I am not sure what I will find in the wall. I called the office and asked to speak with the owner, who was unavailable. A manager called me back and then spoke with the plumber to temporarily cap the pipes. The owner did call me later that night and offered to come out himself and look at the problem. As I told him, I could not comprehend any scenario in which changing a valve would result in a $1200 charge. In the interim, I called another plumber who gave me an estimate of $200 to fix the issue. I cancelled Silco, and had the other plumber work on my problem. He was in and out if my house in hours and fixed the problem very quickly. I was so disappointed that this business would attempt to take advantage of me financially, that I will never use them again. If this is how they treat long term valued clients, I can't imagine how they treat new clients. Buyer be warned, stay clear of this company. read more

The cold spell was too much for our 20-year old furnace and it failed last night, the beginning of a long holiday weekend. As our house's temperature hit 38 degrees and going down, I called Silco around 7 this morning and the repairman was here by 9. In 20 minutes he diagnosed several problems and got the furnace back to a functional state (we will need a new furnace soon, though). So our pipes didn't freeze, and we got done in time to do our Saturday activities. Furthermore, even though this is an extremely busy time where they're dealing with emergencies, the repairman took the time explain what was wrong, lay out our options, and give me some important advice (leave plenty of space around the furnace and water heater, don't buy cheap thermostats at discount chains). I called Silco for emergency service for my central air conditioning unit. Joe came out to diagnose the problem and determined that a fan was broken. Then I received a quote for $1100 to fix the fan. He also said that the compressor might also not be working and gave me a quote for $8,500 to fix that as well. I didn't feel comfortable at all after receiving these quotes given how exorbitant they were, so I called Silco back and told them not to come back to fix the problem. Either way, I was out $300 for the emergency service + dianostic service. I then called MacFarlane Energy to come out a few days later to look at the problem. Their technician immediately went to see if the capacity was blown, which it was. He installed a new capacitor and had the problem fixed in 30 minutes. Honest, confident, and really professional. There was no problem with my fan or condensor at all. I've written a letter to the president of Silco telling him about this situation and to ask for my money back. I'll post additional details if they do actually return my money or not. I hope it is just a training issue, but you should be careful dealing with this company ------------ NOTE: Last week the president of the company, Jerry Silverio, called me personally based on the letter I sent to him. He said he wanted to personally address the letter and let me know that I was refunded the money immediately. He also said that none of his staff work on commission, so there should be no conflict of interest there. He couldn't explain what happened, but did say that Joe has been a reliable employee. . read more

We had Silco install a new furnace and AC in 2016, and it was the worst decision I have ever made as a homeowner. The installation itself had numerous problems, including an intermittent electrical connection that kept the AC from working. Turned out their tech had stripped the insulation improperly, cutting the actual copper wire. They also had to recharge the AC twice, right after installing it, before they figured out it had been a faulty unit from the start - but the owner still charged me $400 for the work, despite the inconvenience of several service calls and the fact that we had no AC for the whole summer. Now, in 2020, I find out that they should have installed a holder for the filter instead of us having to jam them inside the actual furnace case, which the manufacturer specifically recommends against, AND that they should have put the furnace up on blocks to keep it from rusting, which it is starting to do. They just don't have a clue what they are doing. And they leave their empty soda cans behind for you to clean up. Stay away from this crew of incompetents. read more

I recently reached out to Silco to get some assistance on my Hot Water Heater as we stopped getting hot water and have had some water pressure issues as of late. One of the challenges with finding a good company to help with this is around the upfront costs for them to come in and inspect the issue in which then they provide a quote after the inspection on what it will take to resolve the issue on top of the cost for them to come out which can range from ~$150 - $400. I called quite a few companies to get quotes and a better understanding of what the costs would be for the process and it was challenging to try to get a true gauge on what something like this in total would cost. Silco was extremely fair with their price $150 to come onsite and then if you go ahead and have them tackle the issue that $150 is embedded in the quote. Phil was the specialist that came out and provided a lot of guidance around various areas that could be improved to help with the issue and overall was not pushy nor tried to sell me a bunch of additional services that probably weren't fully necessary at this very moment which I appreciated. The service was great and the total cost to replace the sensor and fix my hot water issue was a lot cheaper than quite a few places that I called. Highly would recommend Silco based on the professionalism and how quickly they were able to get out to my house and get our hot water system back up and running. Wilco plumbing is bait and switch operation stay away. I called them Saturday for a noisy recirculator pump and told them no emergency They came Tuesday and said $150 up front. Ok I will agree as long as it comes off cost of pump. Guy goes out to get a hose comes back and says now it is $350 and if we change the pump it is $950 extra. As previously stated, I would give 0 stars if possible. I needed an emergent plumber, I spoke to Joe, via phone, on a Saturday, he came to the house, explained the emergency fee and diagnosed the problem. This first part, I was thankful and grateful for. He stated, I could pay the $150 emergency Saturday fee on Monday when he returned at 8 am. Fast forward to Monday at 8 am....Joe was a no show at 8 am. I called him at 830 and he stated I need to call the office to schedule this appointment. I was extremely confused based on our prior conversation on Saturday when he stated he would be at the house at 8 am (to replace a part). I called the office and spoke to a very nice man who stated he did not know about my appointment but a plumber would be calling me very shortly and he apologized. Joe calls me back states he will be at my house in 45 min or so. Joe arrives at 915 am which would have been ok had I just known about it and not been waiting since 8 am so that I could go to work. I ask joe if we could compromise on the $150 emergency fee since he was so late....this is where everything goes down hill. To make an extremely long story short....Joe the plumber committed to something he should not have which was an 8 am appointment. Joe, also did not own up to his mistake and ended the morning yelling at me in my own house. I spoke to the owner, Jerry, 2 separate times to try and meet in the middle about this fee. I offered to pay $75 dollars but Jerry was exceptionally unreasonable and rude to me. I would absolutely stay away from this company, unprofessional is an understatement. read more

I called Silco Co, to go to my house to check out what wrong to my furnace it not running for a lightning that hit and some things went wrong. He came checked a few polls then found that a fuse that burn out then he replaced a fuse, unfortunately the fuse # 3 at place but he changed fuse # 5 then he said ok now I can reinstall a thermos start that I took a part first I thought it was fell. Now he screw up the cover panel then I suddenly heard a pop up, " fuse burn" I stated humm fuse burn a again may there's something not right. He changed second fuse then it burnt again , now he the diagnosis point to connect the two points of the fuse together by that time he change the wire S to neutral and the neutral wire to the poll S this is the reason why my control board damaged! Gone! This guy Joe is not nice man to me when I opened pay more whatever he did to me finally I didn't pay a penny to his time of serviced. (! )I didn't mind to pay him more and bonus for the response to us when I called and with customers always expecting bring things at least back normal if it can be. Don't be silly and must have been nice guy, I called them and asked don't order a thing he wrote in a receipt that said;" weather gard" but he said he placed the order of a weather gard in an invoice and cost up to 950$00. I finally thought he determine some more wrong a bout my furnace. Because of a fuse # 3 but why replaced fuse #5 then he connected wrong cable poll at the S and a neutral point then killed my control board at one!!! Like one of the other reviewers here, I find all of the negative reviews of Silco pretty confusing. I've been using Silco for 10 years in two different houses, with work ranging from small faucet repairs to major work involving digging up pipes. They are a bit more expensive than some of the other companies in the area, but I've always found them to be extremely professional and honest. I don't mind paying a bit more for quality work from a company I trust, and Silco is a company I've returned to time and again. read more

I have used Silco a few times and every time I say it will be my last, the problem is plumbers don't like to call back. Someone usually answers the phone there, but getting a call back is not usually prompt. Had an issue with a tankless water heater and decided not to pay the $150 emergency cost, so they told me they would call me first thing Monday. Monday rolls around and no call back, so I call them only to get a call back nearly an hour later to tell me they would "fit me in" no thanks. I told them I was done with them. read more

I can't understand the negative reviews about this company. I have used Silco off and on for more than five years, fortunately I haven't had to call them too often. When I do call, I invariably receive polite service. The repair person shows up on time, and the job gets done quickly and efficiently. Every person I have used there is friendly, takes whatever time is needed to answer my questions, and seems very invested in representing the company well. What's not to like? But regretted it as she needed an arc faucet to wash her hair. I called Silco , told them if there was anything that could be done that was economically feasible, since she had already paid Silco over $500.00 in full. The owner is reasonable and easy to deal with, he returned my calls personally and quickly, and changed the kitchen faucet a week after they installed it free of charge. I have used up to 4 different Plumbing Companies and when a job was unsatisfactory done, or was not happy with it. Outrageously expensive. I hired Silco to install a vanity and faucet for me. I supplied both the faucet and the vanity. They charged me $754 for three hours of labor plus travel time - an avg. of $215/hr if you factor in 1/2 hr for travel time and $250/hr if you don't! One of those hours was spent by the plumber going to the plumbing supply house to purchase a tool because it was not on his truck. I paid him but will never hire him again. read more

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice . . . . We've used Silco a few times in the past with average (yet expensive) results. Recently we had two faucets fail on the same day. Kitchen and bathroom taps both broke and I wasn't getting any cold water from either. Not exactly an emergency situation, but it did need fixing. Joe arrived and gave me what I thought was a very high estimate, but it was within reason so I authorized the work. I asked for a brushed chrome finish faucet in the bathroom and he stated that they cost $200 more than a plain chrome finish. Since then, I've researched faucet pricing on my own and the difference is about $40 to $50, tops. He told me he would arrive the following week on a Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. At 2:00, he still hadn't arrived. I called the office and they paged him. It took him over an hour to call me back. When he did call, the call kept breaking up. Eventually we were disconnected. He called me back a few minutes later, and the call was breaking up again. His first response? "It must be your phone. Mine is fine." Yes, my landline is known to drop calls *insert eyeroll here*. Then he informed me that he was on an emergency call and wouldn't be able to make it, but could be there Friday. The kicker was when he asked me "So, what exactly is it we were supposed to be doing at your home again?" Hello, I took a day off of work to accommodate you and despite the fact that you were a no call/no show, you want me to take another day off? And you can't remember what the job was? Sorry, not happening. I told him he could come on Saturday. The call magically disconnected again. He had his apprentice call me back and explain that they would have to get permission from their office to work on a Saturday. I told them that if they couldn't work on Saturday, then they'd have to come at night when I was home or it wasn't going to happen. Authorization to work on Saturday was approved and we had an agreed upon time of 8:00 a.m. I got a phone call Friday morning at 6:30 a.m. telling me that Joe was going to be sick and they couldn't make it.
