Super disappointed. The first time we walked into this place, it was jam packed and we weren't able to get a seat. Granted, it was Valentine's Day so that explains it to a point. But we both assumed that the food was going to be good. We eventually made it back only to find that this 4.5 star rating seems to have been given well out of the realm of reality. I have no idea how this came to be 4.5 stars. Maybe the plethora of good food in DC & Chicago the past month has tainted our expectations? I don't know. But I am bummed that it did not love up to expectations, especially since this is less than a mile from the house. Soup. This came with the meal, and was good. Not amazing but it was quite good. Solid way to start. it was a yellow split pea-based soup. Salad. Also came with the meal, and was also quite good. Save for the fact that the salad came after the meals as they forgot, it was also good. If it had come in order I would say: so far, so good. But the service was good in all. So I'm not going to complain about that. The salad was a cucumber & tomato dish in vinegar. Andy loves that as a basis for a salad. Bread. Again came with the meal. It was fine, but mostly unremarkable. Sort of related to an Indian naan, but less flavor. I like a garlic naan so in comparison this seemed too plain. We got 3 appetizers and 2 mains. This was for 3 people. A1. Potato Bholani. This was fairly tasty but was such a small portion I more or less had 2 bites and it was gone. It was a sort of phylo dough with potato in it, folded over in a half circle and cut into wedges. A2. Grape Leaves. These were good, but again, 2 bites and they were gone. These were different than the Turkish variety we've had before. Not sure why exactly, as it had been too long. You could do worse but I would not split this if you want to grok the dish. I guess that statement goes for all of these. A3. Falafel. This was good, but with a caveat. It was a super fried ball of falafel. I don't know if this is how it's supposed to be made but it felt like these were just freezer balls that got deep fried on-demand. Good enough, but I don't think you should go here for these. M1. Borani Cadu. Butternut squash. This was pretty uninspired. By "pretty" I mean "really". I would highly not recommend this dish. I mean, it tasted like 50 cents worth of steamed butternut squash with very little seasoning. Not at all worthy of being served as a main dish. More of a side dish. M2. Mantu dumplings. These were really good. But again, really small. I got 2, which were effectively 2 bites. Yes we split the main dish in 3 ways but 2 bites is way, way too small. Essentially these were over $3 per bite. Yes, per bite. Bonkers. Each of the mains came with a rice that you could choose. I'm pretty sure we got the Kabli Palaw with one of the dishes, maybe the squash. And for the dumplings maybe it was Chalaw. Don't hold me to that one, but that's my best guess as I look at the menu. The rice was fine, but again, unexceptional. We steered clear of the kabobs and maybe that was a mistake. For sure, we did not get enough food in hindsight, and this may be 1 of the problems I'm having with this place. Looking back, the food wasn't terrible but for $65 (no drinks) I would hope that 3 people would walk away full. But before we left, Andy said to me: You know you're going to need to eat something later tonight. I'd say if 3 people came in here super hungry, you'd need to order $100 of food to be satisfied. Seems crazy, but it is what it is. In all, not bad, but some of the stuff is uninspired and in all, the servings were way too small. I like that this is so close to the house but I'm disappointed that the food isn't so good that I'm itching to go back. read more

I love this place. I used to work nearby and would occasionally order food online for pick up. I have since brought my finance here and my whole family for my birthday dinner. My 90 year old grandma who just ate a taco for the first time a couple years ago even liked it. It's hard to see from the plaza and if I didn't stumble upon it on an online food ordering service I likely would have never stopped by. The menu is so unique and everything is fresh and flavorful. If you are a vegetarian I HIGHLY recommend it as you will have your pick of multiple dishes and entrees. They even serve carrot juice and so many items you have likely never had. Came here on a lunch break from work with a few coworkers. None of us had really had Afghan food before, but it seems like it was quite a hit! Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals and it was great to try something new. Lunch prices were quite reasonable, but it looks like they go up a decent amount for dinner. The staff was very nice, although when someone in my party asked what okra was, the server was unable to answer. When we arrived (around 11:45), we were the only ones in the restaurant, but within half an hour 5-10 parties showed up. Overall, the food was great, the atmosphere seemed a little chintzy - especially with the rolling slideshow of what looked like the results page of a google image search for "Afghanistan" - but nice for a little while, and the staff were all very friendly and most were able to answer questions us newbies had. read more

We have been going here for many years. We love to celebrate our special occasions there. Never have we been to a restaurant where you are greeted so warmly and treated to the most wonderful, fresh, homemade food. This family run restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and welcoming inside. They also have a few outdoor tables. Ethnic artwork and a fireplace add to the warm ambiance. The bread is warm and amazing. Every single dish had never ever been disappointing. The salmon, lamb and chicken are our favorites. The lentil soup warms your soul. It is hard to have room for dessert, but if you can, the Firni is outstanding. I've been hearing about this spot for years and finally decided to treat myself for Eid dinner. Bottom line: I'm very picky and I'd go back to this spot. It was never clear throughout the experience who was my server - which was fine. I was never neglected. Food The food was delicious. I'm a big fan of the salad, bread and soup that are included in every meal. I ordered rib eye, which is the only cut of steak that I like. At the first bite, I began doubting that it was in fact rib eye. By the time I finished it, I was fairly certain that it was not rib eye; it was a cheaper cut of meat. It was way too chewy and gristly to be rib eye however it was seasoned and cooked well. Prices The prices were reasonable for the location. If the steak I ordered had been rib eye, it would have been worth it. I felt a little cheated but again - the food was good. I was trying to have lunch with my daughter at one of the other restaurants in the same complex, but they were inexplicably closed. My five year old asked "what about this place (Silk Road)?" I had been a couple times before, but never with her. What the heck? There were a few tables when we sat down at a bright spot by the front window. We looked over the lunch menu, which had a good assortment of appetizers and vegetarian and meat entrees. I asked whether they could make a falafel lunch special for my daughter from the falafel appetizer. They cheerfully obliged. The special starts with a delicious lentil soup, followed by a generous salad of tomatoes, cucumbers and onions in lemon/olive oil dressing with lots of fresh herbs. My daughter loved eating this with the mint and tougher-based condiments from the trio of sauces they put on the table (the third was a bit spicy for her, but I loved it. They also provided two delicious steaming hot loaves of bread on the table, which we enjoyed with our appetizers. Then came the meal--I had cauliflower in a rich and spicy sauce with the rice with orange peel and almonds/pistachios. My rice was surprisingly sweet, and my daughter ended up eating most of it. I wanted more of the cauliflower, which seemed small. My daughter had five pieces of falafel which were crispy and delicious with a side of carrot and raisin rice. Her rice was less sweet than mine, so we swapped. All in all the food was very good, the service was capable, and there were lots of things to look at inside (which made for some positive conversation with my daughter while we were waiting). So service was really slow. They were professional but it didn't seem like they had some system in place. If anyone saw you looking bored, they'll stop and ask. If not you'd have to wait until someone sees you. Price is up there compared to other Afghani restaurants but then it's not a casual take out place either so higher price is justified. Food was good. You get soup, salad and decent size bread to get you started. Entree portion is decent size too. We finished the whole thing and felt quite stuffed. Definitely go if you've never been there. This is a wonderful, family-run restaurant. Everyone is very friendly, but on several occasions we felt very rushed. I understand that it's a popular place and gets very crowded on the weekends, but I always make sure to have a reservation, and you're definitely spending enough, so please let people take their time and enjoy their food and wine. That is my only complaint - the food itself is outstanding and always delicious. The kabobs are tender and flavorful. My husband loves the Naringe Palaw (rice with orange and nuts), but it's not for me - I don't like to mix sweet with savory. The plain saffron rice is just fine by me. My favorite dish is the Mantu Dumplings - different and absolutely delicious. Coupled with the lentil soup and their amazing homemade flatbread, and you have one happy tummy. This is the most AMAZING place from start to finish. My friend from Afghanistan recommended this as the most authentic Afghan food she's had in the US. The host and our server were lovely and kind and gave us all the time we needed while stopping in to check on us. We ordered the ashak dumplings to start and our meals came with the soup and salad. We ate every single bite. We also ordered the lamb kebab with the orange/pistachio rice and the eggplant dish with the spinach rice. Everything was to die for and the portions were so generous that we had leftovers. I spent the entire next day counting down until I could eat them for lunch. First of all, the food is amazing. Always keeps me wanting to come back. And especially as a vegetarian, it's nice to see how accommodating the restaurant can be to that lifestyle. At first, I thought that it would be an issue that I'm paying about 20 dollars for my meal, but then I realized why: They give you quite a good amount of food for that 20. Their naan is fantastic (thanks to their freshly making it in their clay oven), the salad itself is big enough to be a meal, the bowl of lentil soup always hits the spot, and lastly, the entree seals the deal. I wind up laying back in my seat very satisfied with my meal with no regrets whatsoever. Now comes the service. Very amazed at how well our waiter did. He made me feel like I was at home being served food by family, and still gave the proper amount of waiter-customer space as well. Talking with my waiter was always an awesome experience, and there were no issues in communication whatsoever. A+ on that too. Overall, I'd have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed with the environment, the service, and the food. Me and my boyfriend decided to give this place a try especially after reading the reviews. This is about a 8 minute drive from us, and we never had Mediterranean good. So we decided to have dinner here. The place is very romantic and the lighting is dimmed. The prices were very fair and the food was incredible. The servers were very attentive and the food was brought out at a timely manner. They serve you a soup and then a salad and then your entree which I loved all three as well as my boyfriend. I loved the soothing Afghan music playing in background and pictures on the walls is treat for eyes.. We ordered Astak for appetizer and ordered lamb kabob/ kebab with Kabli pulao for entrée.. first arrived the soup and then Came salad. I really like the soup because good and simple texture and the salad was off the hook... I really really liked it. Then our appetizer arrived. It's dumpling with meaty yogurt sauce on top of it it was really good too. They also brought us Naan which was amazing.. it was freshly baked and flaky.. It was my favorite food item in our whole dinner.. Then came lamb chops with rice which was good also. Overall I really like this place and will be back. I might just come back for salad and Naan.. Cadu-2 small pieces, mantu as an entree also 2 pieces (considering the price of $18.99) I would call it's ridiculous, ghusfan kabob consists of 6 small pieces of dry, non tasty meat.
