Ate here back in November & just posting review now. This place is DELICIOUS & family owned. The owners daughter seated us & gave us recommendations since it was our first time there. She was really friendly & sweet. Service was great, food even better, everything cooked perfect. Only negative was one of the rice dishes-it was too sweet with my kabob but I'm sure it would be a good balance with some of the other dishes on the menu. Never felt rushed & definitely will be back. I must note that my review is based on personal preference - I prefer food that is rich in flavor, rather than subtle in it's approach. So this review is a reflection of my palate. If you like bland / subtle flavors, then you will be happy here. If however you prefer strong flavors such as Indian or Thai then you will likely feel the same as do I. Silk road is an adequate, albeit lackluster restaurant. The decor is pleasant albeit cheapened by the scrolling pictures of the Afghan countryside. The food is always fresh, but as far as I am concerned is completely devoid of flavor. I have been here repeatedly for group lunches, and have tried virtually every one of their meat and rice combinations, and am disappointed every single time for the lack of taste. The only time i ever enjoyed the food was when I pretended to be a vegetarian for a day and shared a couple of vegetarian dishes with a friend. Note: the bread they bring out when you first sit down, is absolutely fantastic, however I am not going to direct anyone to go to a restaurant because of the free bread no matter how good it is. read more

The Mediterranean fare was pretty solid. We started with lentil soup. It was seasoned well and tasted pretty amazing. The Mediterranean salad was pretty good too. It consisted of diced tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. It's very similar to salsa fresca. The bread was stretched yeast bread. I think I can eat that every day. I ordered ghusfan kabob, grilled chunks of lamb. It was pink in the center and tender. Tasted great with their yogurt sauce. For the rice, I tried naringe palaw (saffron, orange peels, almonds, and pistachios) and ladam palaw (spinach). I enjoyed the naringe palaw more. It was sweet and was something different. We went on a Sunday, so had to order from the dinner menu. It was a bit on the pricey end. The portions weren't too big. Most of us finished our food. I would give it 3 1/2 stars, but the soup and bread was really good. read more

Lunch only! Great for the lunch specials comes with free bread and cucumber salad - delish! Been here a few times and have ordered something different, never disappointed. Overall because it's lunch and I head back to work afterwards I'm okay that the meal portions are smaller. Chapli (beef and lamb kabobs) - yummy Chicken tandoori - standard stuff Fried Tilapia filt - Ok Angus kabobs - pretty good lamb shank - yummy There are three sauces - alllll so good. Very poor hospitality. Really disappointed with food they served. They served the soup and salad immediately and long time to serve the main course. Taste is also not upto the standard. The BEST Afghan food in the world. Better than the food in Afghanistan lol. Its a nice little place in Warren that's family owned by a married couple with two boys and a girl. The kids also work there. The meal to get here which I haven't changed in the 20 times I've been here is murgh kabob which is chicken kabob that's super juicy and fresh and well seasoned with the best afghan spices found in the farthest corner of the world. You have to combine this with naringe pilae which is orange flavored rice! Wow. This blew my mind. But before all this you gotta try their hot bread called palaw for appetizer which comes with 3 sauces! Red, green, and white sauce. I love the green n white sauce. Say hello to Mustafa in the front. Nice guy. He is a big MMA fan. Plus they are big manny pacquiao fan. The best boxer in boxing. That's what makes us click. I'm a pacquiao fan myself. Go here for lunch, much cheaper too. High on prices but very low on quality and quantity of food. We used to enjoy the food here few years ago so ordered 3 Veg and 1 mixed grill platter recently. Veg food extremely bland, mixed grill platter had 6 meat pieces. Not worth the high price. read more

This place was fantastic! The setting is very warm. Would be great for a date, or family gathering. With most of the items on the menu came soup, salad, and naan. The naan was warm and fresh. The dipping sauces were to die for and tasted so good with the naan, especially the white one. I had the tandoori plate (chicken thigh) and the spices were just right! When a friend and I decided to meet up for lunch one day we thought that we should try something new. So we picked a location that was in the middle of where we live and started looking for restaurants. The Silk Road came up and decided it was worth a shot. First they don't serve lunch on the weekend which was probably the most negative thing about our experience since everything else was great. We both ordered kabobs, personally I was rather happy we were getting dinner since I had overslept and had to skip breakfast. I ordered the Ghusfan Kabob which I thought was really good. I've had lamb kabobs at a variety of places but this was just tasty. The meal starts with what looked like a Sheppard salad as well as some long flat bread loaves to eat. After they bring some soup and your meal which is quit filling. As for the décor of the place, it seemed pretty authentic, never havening afghan before I can't really judge against anything else. The only tacky thing was a TV playing some scenes of what I assume were afghan landscapes and a woman, the place could have done without that but it wasn't too big of a deal . The servers were very nice and helpful in ordering anything we had questions about. The actual restaurant is in this little plaza that is small and secluded. I almost thought I was at the wrong place when I parked since it's out of site from the street. All in all I look forward to coming here again. read more

First time at an Afghani restaurant. Being Indian, some of the items seemed familiar. I ordered a ground lamb and beef dish with rice. The ground lamb/beef had a great taste, but I would have preferred some yogurt to along with it. My coworker had the filet kabobs and they were very good. read more

Wonderful service by a hardworking family that has managed to get it right. I came here on a work trip because of the great Yelp reviews and they were right--this is a place for which you should go out of your way. Recently Zagat Rated too! I had the combo Kebab with lamb, chicken and fillet. To my surprise, it was the chicken that was my favorite! Incredibly juicy and tasty. I had the naringe palaw--rice with saffron, orange peels, almonds and pistachios. It was delightfully sweet. Desert was an elephant ear-- a thin, fried dough drizzle with honey and topped with powdered sugar an a dollop of whipped cream. My first Afghan cuisine and I am so happy I gave it the benefit of the doubt. All entries come with salad, rice and bread. Perfect pairing to the grill kabob like selections. They have 4 types of rice, my favorite is the saffron (sweet) and spinach (ready for green color) rice. The bread is to die for. Reminding me of naan but not as greasy and crispier. We got the Mantu appetizer. Skin is very light like wonton skin. Filling is also quite light but flavorful. Smothered in some yummy yogurt base sauce. A great start. We got the ground chicken, lamb shank and okra entrees. Family style so I got to try everything. The chicken is the winner surprisingly. Its owner operated and so service is very good and friendly, the kind of place that wants to make you feel like you are family. As always, BYOB. Entrees cost about $18-20. Total cost $25pp out the door and we were all beyond stuffed. Definitely coming back. read more

My wife and I love coming here; everything is so delicious. From the kebabs to the braised lamb to the chicken, everything is wonderful. Try to mix up the different rices when you order; all of them are very tasty. All meals come with an accompanying lentil soup and a crisp refreshing cucumber and tomato salad and hot fresh bread. I love this place. Amazing food. Warm, friendly environment. Rather than have each server have a section of the restaurant, they all overlook all tables. Not a problem but when I'm sitting there with a closed menu for almost five minutes, I do wish I had a specific server. Definitely not a huge issue though. Silk Road is an amazing restaurant. I cannot speak to its authenticity, however, everything there is so delicious. The large mantu entree with Naringe Palaw is to die for. The bread is always so fresh and hot. The lentil soup starter and the salad are amazing too. Tons of vegetarian options here. Been here for lunch, dinner, and take out for both and service and food is consistently wonderful. You'll definitely have leftovers with the amount of food you get for the price. We went for the first time on Valentine's Day and everything was perfect. It was such a great experience that we told our friends and family about this amazing place. A week later we decided to come back and bring our family with us but our experience was nothing like the first time. We asked for hummus and my brother asked for a coffee as soon as we sat down. The waiter brought the bread but not the hummus and my husband and I ordered a combo for two as the owner had told us it would be a better deal. When our food came we still hadn't received the hummus or the coffee so again we asked for it. Finally the waiter brought the hummus thinking it was our second order and we had to tell him that the first order never came. (Still no coffee). Not to mention that the combo for two looks EXACTLY like a one person platter but for twice the cost ($50). To be honest my moms platter had more food than our "two person" platter. The waiter said he'd bring us extra plates since we were sharing a platter and that the coffee was on its way (lies!). I ended up having to use my bread plate to eat because he never did bring us another plate. My brother in law ordered the lamb shank and it was terrible and their so-called "brown rice" is regular white rice with some spice that gives it a brownish color. To conclude he asked if we wanted anything else and my brother (for probably the fourth time) asked for his coffee. It was clear he had forgotten about it even after being asked several times. One of the best afghani restaurants I've been to. The ambiance is so well thought out- it's like they brought a piece of Afghanistan in there. They start you out with a fresh cucumber tomato salad with fresh warm naan type bread and a spinach soup. The bread was delectable. For dinner, I ordered the chicken korma with the ladam rice. The chicken was so tender and the the stew went really well with the spinach rice. My boyfriend ordered the chicken kabob which was charred to perfection, and you could really taste the mint leaves in it. We finished off the meal with fresh mint tea. I have been enjoying the cuisine at Silk Road since 2012. My wife would order their lunch special and bring me home an order for me to enjoy at home. I'm a combat veteran. On my tours I was able to taste this cuisine in country and it's very difficult to recreate taste, especially when the product is raised or harvested under different environmental conditions. For Silk Road, they are able to get what I consider the closest of not identical version of the foods I've come to appreciate while away from home. I have come to know the owners and their children, who work there. They are very kind people who just want you to enjoy a part of their culture when you come to their restaurant. They want you to leave happy and return to taste again. I change my order every time and have tried everything. There are some dishes I love more than another, but there is nothing I disliked. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and the spices making their way into the dining area from the kitchen will give you the strength to stand-by should there be wait. read more

Over priced for what it is The aghan pulaos (rice dishes) are not worth going there for, fans of kabuli pulao look elsewhere. You guys have to try this place!! I'm giving it five stars based off food and food alone! Everything is home cooked so you really feel great after eating a meal here. If you are going here and love a good filet mignon order the filet mignon with the Ladam Palaw rice or the Chalaw rice. It is to die for! The ambiance of the place was also very peaceful and inviting as well, and it is in a great neighborhood in a little complex with other restaurants and stores. Great for a date night. I called in for a pick up order on a Sunday afternoon. After greeting me on the phone, the guy told me to wait, after a minute or 2 he comes back and says what would you like. I was expecting an apology first because it was a 2 min hold. I ignore this and gave him my order and he sighs! The guy on the phone sighed twice at least. I went to pick up the order and was greeted when I entered the restaurant. There was a guy on an iPad just talking away. I believe he was one of the owners or a Manager but didn't acknowledge us. I was the only one in the restaurant so I would expect for them to have a friendly conversation but nope. The food is quite average to be honest. I have had way better Afghan food. This restaurant is a treat and a definite "destination" if you you live out of the area. It's worth the trip. It's located within a beautifully designed small outdoor mall. The restaurant itself is elegantly designed; nice tables, comfortable chairs,, elegant unique chandeliers. Obviously a lot of money was invested in the decor. You immediately notice the coordinated cloth napkins, wall and window treatments, tablecloths and flatware. The setting is very, very nice. The Afgan motif in enhanced through posters and beautiful photos of landscapes, towns and people shown on flat screen video monitors. The food is delightful. I was here with a friend, it's definitely a place I would return to with a group. The menu is quite varied, from seafood to lamb and beef. The assortment of different rice combinations, kebabs, salads is very interesting and well presented. Afgan food is flavorful, and easy on the palate, its a natural taste, everything we ordered was good. The varieties of their teas are are worth trying. It's also BYOB. The service was very friendly, made you feel like you were a regular and a friend. Be prepared to enjoy the visit. I can't wait to go back with a crew. read more

Woohoo! As good as it gets! ...I think. I'm not really sure, there's not too many other Afghan places around. So this is my only measuring stick to go by. From what I've had though, I really like Afghan food. The decor is cozy and comfortable. The lighting is dim, the tables are pretty close together, and the fireplace is on when it's cold, and it's overall a good atmosphere. This place always seems busy for dinner, so expect a bit of a wait if you don't make reservations. (An excellent environment for a dinner date in my opinion) I usually get the Lamb Kabob with the Spinach Rice, and it is phenomenal. The lamb is grilled and seasoned perfectly, and the rice is delicious. The fresh bread they give you with your meal is also phenomenal. You'll swear you can just go there for the bread alone. The portions are good sized. They're not too small, but they're not extremely large either. I always end up finishing my plate without any issues. People who come with me are mixed, some finish and some have leftovers; but I've never heard someone say they didn't have enough to eat. The staff is a family I believe. They're very nice and pleasant to deal with. We always seem to get bits of tiny free plates - appetizers, soups, deserts - when we go which is always cool too. read more

Many of my friends have raved about this restaurant for years and I've been wanting to go there. Last night my husband and I had dinner at our friends' house in Warren and they ordered pick up from Silk Road. The food was absolutely delicious and plentiful. Appetizers were Cadu (fried pastry filled with butternut squash) and Mantu (steamed dumplings filled with beef & leek onions). Entrees were Lamb Shank and Ghusfan Korma (lamb with lentil sauce). Food is outstanding. Great value in terms of food cooked fresh and perfectly while also an abundance of it. Entrees come with Tomato Cucumber Salad, Soup and fresh hot bread (Naan) straight from the oven to the table. I drive 45 min just to come here. I've brought everyone I could think of with me.. it's byob! And its amazing! The family who owns this restaurant is so nice and they do a great job! My boyfriend and I are greeted as if we are family too (probably because we come so often ). Ok, order the squash filled pancakes and the dumplings topped with lentils and yogurt. I actually order this as my meal. Its sooo amazingly tasty that it makes me happy talking about it. Now for the meal, really ANYTHING is good. You have an option of 3 different rices to choose from, get the orange peel and nut rice.. mmMmmm. Im telling you, complimentary lentil soup upon arriving, steaming hot flat bread and 3 types of dipping sauce, Afghan music and fun interior design to make you feel like your escaping nj for an hour. We went here on a Friday night with friends at their recommendation. It was bigger and busier than I am expected. The inside was also decorated beautifully with chandeliers and ornaments. We ordered the Angus kabob and the stew chicken that came with soup, salad, and bread. All was very good, but we didn't care for the tomatoes and cucumbers salad. We also had the orange rice (#2) it was delicious and quite sweet. The 4 stars is because of service. We had to ask for ice multiple times and a water refill, we didn't seem to have an assigned server in the beginning, and at the end we had multiple people asking if we were done and wanted dessert. Went for lunch for the first time and was really impressed. Nice atmosphere, a good variety on the lunch menu, and dishes that you just don't get every day. All of us had a nice soup, some chopped cucumber/tomato/onion salad and great, warm bread. There was a choice of multiple styles of rice as part of each lunch item. Giving them a 3.5! Listen, they've got really delicious food. I am talking about amazing lentil soup, homemade bread, delicious salad, grape leaves, and lamb chops that make your mouth sing! But the chicken was just okay -- it needed more salt. And the firni was yummy but it had this film over it from being in the freezer. It also had a slight freezer burn taste. Overall though, well done, chef, well done! I would give them a 4 for the food alone but the reason they are only getting a 3.5 is because 1) when we first arrived, we walked right up to the hostess stand, stood there for a while, and the guy took a while to greet us, 2) once we got our menus, it took a while for someone to come over and take our order, and 3) took too long for folks to take our dessert order as well as give us our check and all that jazz. Staff were polite and friendly but could have definitely picked up their service response time. Otherwise, really nice decor and cozy. Though, I could do without all of the flat screen tv's and occasional cheesy pictures! read more
