Wow, a taste of home here in Clarksville! I grew up with a grandmother who frequented STL German and Austrian bakeries, and this reminded me of my childhood. Cheese danishes, croissants, and the streusel were all amazing. The coffee was pretty good too (the gingerbread latte was cute!). The service was friendly, and although not quick - we weren't in a hurry so it wasn't an issue. For my husband's birthday, I wanted some German chocolate cake. I was able to get a couple of great slices from this spot, as well as some tiramisu. I also got what they call the "beesting," or bienenstich, a German dessert made with sweet yeast dough and caramelized almonds. He enjoyed all three selections. All of the treats were well made and tasty. And the portions are generous! Each slice was 6 dollars, and honestly for the size and quality, that's fair! They also had cheesecake, strudel, and various baked goods. They have a wide selection of bread in the other part of their large building. Always made from scratch! Authentic German bakery and cafe right off College, Silke's is a favourite of our ladies group. Went here today to enjoy coffee and tea and some delicious treats! Super nice staff will attend to your culinary desires. Bring cash if you want to avoid the slight surcharge for use of credit card. Delicious sandwiches, German breakfast plates, and even pizza are on the menu, too! The pastries, danishes, and more are delicious, light, and varied. They even have gluten free options! I love trying something different with a hot cup of Earl Grey tea each time I come. Prices aren't too bad either. We come back fairly regularly and will continue to. They even have a separate enclosed dining area that can be reserved for events. They are kid-friendly as well with a kid playing area! Love this place and sure you will, too!! read more

The cafe reminded me of small cafes in Bavaria. The counter service was quick. There were all sorts of pastries to temp you. We stopped in for an early lunch. I had the Turkey & Cheese sandwich with a side of German potato salad. My dining partner had the schnitzel sandwich with a side of kraut. It was all very good (see pics). The cafe: Very yummy, gluten free and vegan options which means I can eat without an upset tummy (yay)! Ambiance was amazing, very cozy hole in the wall. Service was very good. I had an inquire about some of the products I.e. ingredients to make sure I could eat it and she didn't guess she went to the produce so I could see it and make sure of the ingredients. Prices however were a bit high for me, however, I also love to support a small business and although it's high I would pay that price again. read more

I have a gluten intolerance and this place is a dream! I love getting sandwiches, pizzas, desserts, and lattes. The food is always a 10/10! I went to this restaurant recently with my wife nine month old baby sister-in-law and brother. My sister-in-law has some allergy restrictions so it was very nice to be received so well at the restaurant where they accommodate all of her allergy restrictions easily. My wife got a turkey sandwich while I got a schnitzel sandwich. Both were fantastic. My brother ordered schnitzel and his wife got a bratwurst. We lived in Austria for four years, and when we returned to the USA we so missed the marvelous fresh bread and rolls we had daily from the local bakeries. so we were excited to see the vision of Silke's! Unfortunately we were very disappointed. The whole wheat loaf was dry and flavorless. The brochen, which we hoped were like Austrian semmels,, were basically good hamburger buns. To be fair, we wanted the multiseed bread and pumpkin seed rolls, but neither were available. Perhaps they are better. Reviews indicate this is the case. We also looked forward to a good schnitzel but found it underseasoned and uninteresting. The frozen schnitzel we get from Aldi's is better. My husband did enjoy the apple strudel. It didn't have the amount of filling we were used to but the taste was good. Overall, everything was ok but not great and we can't see making the drive from North f Nashville to Clarksville again. read more

Lovely bakery in Clarksville! I stayed for a month and made it here at least once a week. Look up the times before you go as their hours are a little different. Now I didn't eat there but their bread rack is my favorite part. All kinds of interesting and diverse bread options. The multi seed, focaccia, and ciabatta bread are some of my most favorites. Really reasonably priced fresh bread. They also have an amazing breakfast/dessert glass case full of alllll the goodness. The staff is really kind, attentive, and helpful. It has a real small town feel which is really nice. Highly recommend if you enjoy baked goods. read more

Lots of mixed thoughts about Silke's. I loved their soup. I was told to order it dining in, because you get more. They didn't have the schnitzel with mushroom sauce that was on the menu. They had no soup that day. They were understaffed too. German coffee is good but not amazing. Service was good yet struggling. The personal Italian pizza - great. My bratwurst and potato salad - good. I am giving it 3.5 stars rounds to 4 stars. I really wanted to have their tasty soup. This is a Clarkesville gem. The staff is delightful, the menu has something for everyone, and the atmosphere is charming. It's challenging to find healthy and plant-based options in this area. There is an affiliated bakery next door. As the fresh bread ages, they offer it at steeply discounted prices. I ate the vegan brat plate. The sauerkraut and potato salad are both warm. The brat itself was flavorful and had a softer texture. I cut it in half lengthwise to fit it onto the bread. The plate comes with yellow and spicy mustard. I recommend adding horseradish and putting it all together (including the kraut and potato salad) on the ciabatta to make a sandwich! The side salad is more substantial than you might imagine. It comes carb-loaded with both croutons and slices of brown bread (delicious!) on the side. Dressings are prepackaged. I appreciated that when I ordered a non-vegan dressing the cashier asked me if I was strictly vegan to help guide me. Great attention to detail! My mom got a side bowl of soup - chicken and wild rice. It came out hot, which says a lot since she is always sending soup back because it's not scalding. It had just enough flavor. A side soup could be a meal for someone elderly or not very hungry. Be prepared to wait if there is a line. They have one cashier and take orders at the counter somewhat slowly. If only the service were as good as the food. I'm not speaking of our waitress but of the owner or manager. We ordered a pizza and when the server brought the pizza, she read off the toppings and we said "yes, that's ours". In just a couple of minutes the owner came over and just began to berate us! "you took someone else's order! This is a gluten free crust!! We only have one pizza oven and we are backed up." She was literally so rude that I got up and left and went to the car to wait for my family to finish. She was standing over us screaming. The waitress looked so frightened the whole time. She knew she had made a mistake in not saying it was a gluten free crust. Anyway, I don't usually give bad reviews but this was a terrible experience. I've never been yelled at before for a wrong order being placed on my table. I feel sorry for the workers if they have to endure this type of treatment for a mistake. WOW! This place is amazing. The atmosphere and the people are all great. Cutest and only German Cafe I have been to. But, it is lovely! Husband and I first tried it this past weekend. We stopped in to get some good sourdough bread. They have a variety of sourdough and other breads and pastries. All good ingredients too which is a plus! We went over to the pastries/desserts. It all looked amazing-I wish I had a taste of every kind of pastry/dessert. One of the workers there was talking to use about how most are made. They are all made with sourdough starter, which is way healthier than what you'd normally use. Plus, since these are German pastries and from the German culture they aren't as sweet compared to the American style desserts/pastries. We ended up going with the cheesecake and the "Bee sting." Both were fabulous and amazingly good! Cheesecake is my favorite and it was spot on. I also wanted to try something off their menu. I tried their hand-made margherita pizza. I only ordered the personal size since my husband didn't want any at the time. I sat the pizza down and my husband took a bite and he immediately fell in love. He said "this is the best pizza." He usually likes crispier, well-done pizza but, this pizza knocked him out of his socks. He ate half of the pizza when right away he wasn't going to have any. The next day he wanted it again it was that good. The pizzas are home-made and the dough is started from the sourdough as well. It was great! Visited the cafe for lunch and was pretty disappointed with the overall visit. We have lived in Clarksville for years and never ate here before now, not really sure why...but hey. We spent a few years in Germany but do not consider ourselves epicurean experts in German cuisine...but enjoy a good schnitzel or wurst when we find it. Neither one of us could order schnitzel because they were all out. I find that to be a huge issue when a place specializing in German food runs out of a German staple by 12 noon. We were told that it sells out quickly, but that's pretty doggone quick unless there is a massive amount of Clarksvillians who enjoy schnitzel for breakfast. Keep in kind that the front page of the website says BEST GERMAN RESTAURANT on it, but they have more American dishes than German. I ordered the Currywurst, which tasted pretty good...but it was overloaded with ketchup and curry powder, I have had Currywurst before and there was just too much on it. Would have been better with some homemade ketchup. Because they didn't have any schitzel, my wife ordered a Cajun Turkey sandwich. I took a bite out of it as well...it had a good taste, but the bread (I presume it came from the bakery) was the star of the sandwich. In the end of it all, it was an American sandwich in a place where we expected more German options. We will not be back to Silke's Cafe. It's a shame that they do not really emphasize German food as the predominant menu items...heck German has at least five different types of schnitzel unique to the country...if Silke's would lose some of the Americanized sandwiches and focused more on German food, we'd probably be back. I know they're not open for business JUST for me, but I fail to see why they're such a popular eatery (aside from the bakery). read more

Silke's Is definitely worth finding and experiencing. The baked goods are what brings you in but the food in the cafe is worth trying as well. I had a Mediterranean Sandwich that blended cheeses , spices, and fresh vegetables on toasted fresh bread. Amazing taste. This was paired with German Potatoe Salad. The PS was light with a sweet taste the worked well with the sandwiches fresh taste. The bakers advised me to try the Nutella Cream cake and it was delicious as well. Not overpowering. Whipped, airy, and beautiful to look at. Recommend trying this special German influence bakery. It is worth traveling off the main road to find! read more

They have a little kids area with toys which is convenient while your waiting for food to come. Four years ago I visited this bakery i thought it was wonderful. Last week I ordered a Christmas basket they told me a time to pick it up. I arrive they are closed and the person answering the door, when I knocked, acted like I was inconveniencing her. She says she made a mistake on the sign that shows they are open. I'm surprised that for a German place it focuses on a lot of vegetarian/vegan options, but maybe it's just the ugly American stereotype in me that assumes all German food is mostly meats. First visited here with the lady friend and since she's not a big meat eater/bread lover thought she would love it. She loved it from all the fresh baked goods, to the cutesy decor and the friendly service to the fresh made food and bread. I wanted to get the Garden Herb Turkey sandwich but they were out of turkey when I went-which is good and bad. Bad because it was a sandwich I really wanted but a good sign that their food is fresh and therefore in a short supply. I ended up ordering two bratwurst instead while my gf got the veggie sandwich. All in all it was really quite good, my bratwurst was anyway, since I didn't want to eat the veggie sandwich. We also split a small loaf of their cheese bread which had a nice combo of seeds and cheeses baked right in and then ended up walking out with their apple strudel and tiramisu. The strudel-advertised as low in sugar was still delicious, in fact better than most because the apples were still pretty crisp as well as the raisins made things naturally sweet without a whole bunch sugar just pumped in. The tiramisu which carried the warning that it's made with real liquor was also delicious, and be warned you can still taste it-but it's by far the best tiramisu I've ever tasted. I brought my mom and my sis here and I went with the chicken soup in a bread bowl. My first visit they also ran out of soup but when we asked the person behind the counter what her favorite soups are and she picked all veggie/vegan varieties. I had the soup and thought it was just okay and definitely think that a veggie soup might have been a better option. My sis' Reuben though was a salty, meaty sandwich that I wanted more of-I'm usually not a Reuben fan but it was something that I could order again. After a couple days in town and eating heavy meals, I wanted something light. We walked around the antique stores and came across this restaurant. Lovely little place! I ordered the creamy garden vegetable soup and a salad combo. Hubby got the personal Italian sausage pizza. Tell you what, this was amazing. The soup and salad came with homemade bread. It was creamy and chalked full of veggies. So good! The salad had spinach and a variety of lettuce with big chunks of peppers and onions and tomatoes. So good too! And the croutons. Oh the croutons. The pizza was really good too. Not very greasy but cooked to perfection. The staff is very friendly and we enjoyed talking with them. This is a place we would return when in town! I want to try the snitzhel at some point too upon returning. It looked good! read more
