Excellent food for breakfast and/or a delicious treat in a nostalgic cafe setting. Great service too

Sill's is great for what it is..... and what it isn't. First, they expect you to use your manners before you are even seated. Everyone is to seat themselves and be courteous to make sure you wait your turn and file in to a booth / table in an orderly fashion. This can be quite the task on busy mornings and you generally have to ask who was last in so you can take their place at the back of the line. This builds new friends. Second. You should order a scone. Period. End of discussion. They are awesome, unhealthy, the size of a sleeping bag, and come with a gallon of honey butter. But they are not an option. Even if you just order a scone you should order a side of scone. Third, this place isn't pretentious, fancy, or any place you could order a healthy breakfast after you just ran the 5k. One side of you will have folks dressed for church, the other side folks in sweat pants with a hole in the butt. In front of you will be a couple old guys in milk boots and behind you a couple with ratty little kids spilling syrup all over the table. Welcome to a "slice of life." Enjoy the diversity. Fourth, your wait staff is running like hell. They will be as friendly as they can but keep in mind they are running. They aren't going to stick around while you ask the in's and out's of the menu and decide if you want whole eggs or just omelets. It's breakfast. Just decide. Last, keep in mind there are lots of people waiting in the line behind you. Eat your breakfast and keep the lollygagging to a minimum. Your waitress will lay a hand written ticket on your table and you pay at the register. Prepare to wait a minute while the lady with the pot of coffee and an arm full of dishes attempts to ring you up. ...and while you're waiting for her to ring you up, you can curl up inside of what is left of that monsterous scone and take a nap. read more

I'm going to make this short and sweet... The scones alone are worth the trip. Beyond that, the bacon is great, the sausage is great, the SOS is very peppery, but good. The hashbrowns would be awesome if they were crispy. They use American cheese (if that makes a difference to you), and they cook their eggs pretty durn near perfect. But again, THE SCONES.... And don't whimp out on the honey butter. Use the whole friggin mound, and then ask for more, and then take some home and bathe in it. The scones..... The scones... I don't even eat flour... This is definitely not the place if you're eyes are bigger than your belly because the servings are huge. Thank goodness for a half order. :) But I was dummy enough to order the SoS on Hash normal size and could only eat about 1/4 of it. It was so good. I do wish they served it with chicken fried steak though like Paul's Diner in Fountain Valley, CA. If I hadn't had coffee, I could have probably finished the entire plate. The scone was absolutely amazing as well (minus the glob of butter). Be sure to get there before 7:30am on the weekdays since the wait for a table can get up to an hour. I can't imagine what time you have to wake up on the weekends for a seat. The service is fast and really friendly. read more

This has been a family favorite for years. They were originally just off of main where the train. Station now is, their new Location is now across from from the new winco by burger stop. The scones are large, I'm taking as big as a dinner plate large so I recommend sharing. Everything is a little better then IHOP or denny's. 4 stars for the family atmosphere,the amazing scones and cinnamon rolls. The wait is often around 45min-1hr so plan on waiting and the parking is a beast. read more

This cloistered little gem is a breakfeast Mega-plex! The waitresses are friendly and try very hard! The menus is wide and varied with breakie being the main focus. The scones (mormons version of indian fry bread) are big fluffy and worthy of honey-butter or a savory slathering of gravy and eggs....you decide. The bacon is worth defecting for and the coffee is delicious and bottomless as are the heeps of breakfast potatoes. I highly recommend this wonderful delight. With a line out the door, I don't like that you have to seat yourself in this establishment. It's a little awkward trying to keep track of who got there first and having to wait to see if the table has been completely wiped off before making a dash to it. But once you're seated, service is nice and friendly. I ordered the Boss which is an egg covered in cheese, hashbrowns smothered in the SOS gravy and delicious bacon. This is CLASSIC comfort food. Nice classic little diner that fills up quick, so be prepared for a line. Very friendly staff that makes you feel right at home. My favorite thing here is the scones. Absolutely delicious, and huge! Just how they should be :) served with a generous helping of honey butter. I've only been here a couple times, but from what I've tried, I would recommend "The Boss's Breakfast"- One egg with cheese, bacon, hash browns with SOS, and a SCONE! It's just the best thing ever! Their SOS is amazing! The other time I came I had "Steak and Eggs" and it was good, but I had to send the steak back to cook longer because it was definitely rare, not medium well. I don't know what I was thinking anyways, I'm not much of a steak guy. I think I just found one of the most expensive things on the menu and gravitated towards it... If it's pricey, it must be good! I walked into the restaurant not knowing what to expect, although I'd seen the great rating here on Yelp. Yelp did not disappoint, so thank you reviewers! Based on reviews, I wanted to try everything so here it goes: Scone: To me, this wasn't a true scone like you'd find at Starbucks or have for British tea. It was more like a solid funnel cake, completely made of batter, and topped with honey butter. For me, the honey butter made this dish. You could put that honey butter on cardboard, and it'd taste great. This was delicious. Tater tots: I know you're thinking....why review tater tots? Because too many places nowadays put newfangled stuff on their tots when all I want are straight up, real, tater tots. This fit the bill. Not too greasy, not burned, not mushy. Good, solid, tater tots. In the picture I uploaded, I requested a side of ranch, and I had to laugh when I was presented a squeezable bottle. In all my travels, NO ONE has given me a side of ranch like that. Awesome. The tots were perfect for dipping in the honey butter, ranch, or gravy in my entree. Heaven. Chicken fried steak: The menu states the chicken fried steak comes with potatoes. I didn't ask how the potatoes were cooked because I didn't want to be THAT GIRL that seems picky. I was pleased to see they were mashed potatoes. The gravy's surely home cooking and hit the spot for me. If you're a brown gravy person, good luck. I'm not sure if they've got brown gravy, and I don't care. The white gravy was pretty good, especially with my tots or parts of my scone. I also had a side house salad (nothing to write home about) that wasn't pictured. It came with the chicken fried steak. There are no shakes available, so I ordered root beer instead. My scone, side of tater tots, chicken fried steak, and root beer cost $18.65 pre-tip. Add a friendly waitress who's not overly chatty but just enough, gigantic portion sizes (could only eat half of everything after skipping lunch), and a view into the kitchen if you sit at the bar area, and you've got yourself an A+ restaurant. read more

I've told some friends how pleased and surprised we were at Sill's Cafe, whom we had never noticed before as we've passed it on our way out of town. I'm not sure our friends quite understood my enthusiasm. I love a restaurant that is authentic to itself. The place doesn't look like much, outside or in. We settled in and gave the post-war-looking menu a scan. S-O-S for breakfast? (Immediately it brought back pleasant chuckles of my mom's "Shit-on-a-Shingle" creamed eggs on toast breakfast, which would usually be accompanied by a side of my dad's old Army stories.) We each settled on a meal less colorfully named. I had a Philly-type steak sandwich; my wife went with steak 'n' eggs for dinner. We found the food excellent and a great value. Mind you, I'm giving this 5-stars for being authentic Americana "Diner Food." Sill's served everything up homemade -- not only homemade looking but homemade tasting and plated much like a homemade meal. Guess what? It's actually homemade. Not a Schtick. Amazing! All the food is simple, generously portioned, and served with a friendly 'tude. For a Friday night it was fairly quiet -- though that made it great for conversation. We hear breakfast on the weekends is the most busy time. This looks to be a great place to bring the kids along for a Sunday brunch. (If you go on Sunday, just mind the short hours: they close at 1 pm.) One of my friends told me about Sill's cafe, I looked them up and had to try them out. I got there right during the lunch rush, the restaurant was packed, but they sat us immediately as we walked in. I got the breakfast Country Fried Steak with eggs and hashbrowns. It came with one of the most amazing scones and honey butter I have ever had. The scone was large and had plenty of butter. A friend local to Layton recommended this place to me some time ago and I happened upon it one day, whilst getting lost trying to find an address in Layton. So, I stopped in and had breakfast, and had a SCONE! Now, the breakfast was good, but the scone was wunnerful. I like scones: my mom used to make them for my brother and myself, so its memory lane stuff whenver I can find a good scone. But be warned: these are big guys. First off: this place needs to hire a host. Desperately. "Please seat yourself" is fine for businesses that have enough tables for it, but when you're this busy it turns into something more like "Please work out amongst yourselves who is next and which table is ready. Keep your eyes open, and good luck." With that said, the food is pretty good diner fare. The portions are a little out of control; my cinnamon roll was roughly the equivalent of four good sized cinnamon rolls, but it was tasty. The scones aren't really scones, they're good but they're more like (GIANT!) funnel cakes. I'm not wild about sliced cheese on my scrambled eggs, but the SOS (sausage gravy with a lot of black pepper) was delicious. My wife told me good things about this place so we decided to take the 45 min drive from Herriman to try it out. Excellent greasy spoon food, big portions, and cheap prices. We like this place, we drive all the way from Utah county (almost an hour drive) to come here for the 'experience' and pancakes and scones but more for the experience. This place serve ginormous sized pancakes and scones. Me typing this review is making me crave their pancakes...dag gammit! Once you enter this place, it doesn't feel like you are in Utah. This place shows diversity and inclusion. That - I really love. That is the experience that you can only get from Sills. You have to be ready for the wait though, but people that come here know the drill. You wait in line, wait for a table to be ready then you take it. The staff is extremely and 'genuinely' nice - you know that kind of nice because they love their job and it doesn't feel like a job for them so they love what they are doing. It's not that kind of nice that you need to be all smiles because you get docked in your scorecard as part of your job evaluation if you are not,,, you know what I mean. This place is just great. I've gone for breakfast lunch and dinner and have always had good meals at a great price with great service. When I go I love to get a sweet roll and a scone. Whats not to love about this place. Its a family owned restaurant, I've been here more time than I can remember. This restaurant is always jam packed with people in the morning. So you wanna get here early! Seating is a little tricky, you want your whole party there and not onesies twosies. The bigger the more difficult but they will work with you and get it situated.
