The wife & I were heading home on I-44 in Sullivan, MO., & we grew hungry but didn't want "fast food", so we saw a place called the "The Silo Restaurant". It was very rustic but modern, beautiful building & was decorated inside with trophy mounts of animals most hunters would never get the chance to harvest. It was very tastefully decorated, relaxed environment & very friendly staff. As we began deciding what to order we inspected their "All You Can Eat", bar & it had BBQ Ribs and I don't mean "riblets", they had full size ribs, large catfish fillets, fried chicken, full salad bar that was unlimited if you purchased a Buffet. Me & the Mrs., ordered "catfish", her the "basket", and me the "dinner". On our plates came catfish fillets that were so large they barely fit on the large buffet style plate! The breading was light & fluffy. The inside was pure white catfish fillets with no "mud lines", green beans that had bacon cooked with the beans that can only be had from what we call "bacon grease"! Yummy! They came with hush puppies, coleslaw; all the standard fare for catfish dinners. The staff was so gracious, warm & friendly. They also had the Salad Bar & Buffet that everything looked delicious. We both got a 1-trip salad bar & the vegetables were very fresh & full of taste and not freezer burnt veggies either! Went to silo restaurant couple of weeks ago with my wife and two friends. I don't remember whatever everybody else ate, but I had the grilled shrimp which was surprisingly delicious. I have not been impressed by this restaurant in the past, but they certainly got that right our waitress was very nice and very thoughtful My blood was going low and she went back to the kitchen and toasted a couple of pieces of bread for me so I would have something to eat right away. I was the only one that went to the salad bar and found it to be pretty good for the most part as far as the salad goes. Some of the other types of salads, such as macaroni salad, and such looked like they've been sitting there for a long time so I skipped those. read more

We've been here before and the food was nothing to write home about. This time we went to try out their Breakfast Buffet. It was not good. The (scrambled) eggs had hard brown spots all over, the Sausage was overcooked, Bacon undercooked. The only other thing on the Buffet was cubed, deep fried potatoes and pale looking french toast and pancakes. Two kinds of Yogurt but no bowls to put it in and some fruit. For $12.50/person I hadn't expected much, but this was pretty bad. By night time both my Husband and myself as well as two other family members got sick. We come to Purina Farms twice a year for a week and we always tend to stop at the SILO restaurant. We've been there three or four times now and Wednesday was the worst that it's ever been. We were a party of eight. We arrived at 5:30 the place was not busy at all. We all ordered dinners. I ordered a 10 ounce ribeye I wanted a baked potato but they were out of them !! who is out of baked potatoes at 5:30 in the afternoon?!?! so I ordered a loaded mashed potato. Another person at our table also ordered a 10 ounce ribeye with onion rings and whatever the vegetable was, I ordered mine medium rare and they had a long conversation with the waitress on how to order theirs. It was going to be medium, medium well When our orders were delivered, I cut a piece off my steak. It was the end piece and it wasn't medium rare but I thought well. It's the end piece. Let's see what it's like down the middle I open my steak and it was nowhere near medium rare I couldn't tell because of how dark it was, but I cut it up and I had a piece and my mother in law had a piece and it was definitely not medium rare. Now my friend at the table who ordered their steak, medium, medium, well got their bloody medium rare so right away I knew what the problem was. The cook screwed up the order, gave the wrong steak to the wrong person and he did it because he put the sides on the plate with the steaks We flagged over the waitress and I asked waitress. How I order my steak and she tried to say medium medium well no no I said they pointing to my friends ordered a medium medium well I ordered a medium rare. Their steak is pink as hell and mine is Not They asked me what I wanted. I said I want my steak, please Cook me a steak, medium rare. One of waitress's came out and said "do you want a steak or do you want something else?" I said I want my steak and then what look liked was the cook came out and said well those are the last 2- 10 ounce ribeyes that they had. Another person at my table said "well you have a 12 ounce ribeye on the menu right" and then somebody else at my table said "We'll just cut 2 ounces off of it" and obviously this cook just didn't know how to handle a complaint and went away. The waitress came back out and said. They were going to cook a 12 ounce ribeye for me and the cook is going to cook it rare and I said "no no no no medium rare l, cook it the right way , the way I ordered it". Well came back rare and now I'm pissed I'm not sending back my steak back a third time. I can take this back to the Rv and microwave it if I have to for God sakes The other person at my table who ordered theirs medium medium/Well sent the medium rare (actually it was closer to rare) steak back and they still did not get it cooked anywhere near medium!! but What is going on at the SILO restaurant I don't understand you're a steakhouse that can't cook a steak. read more

I went with the buffet and I started with a salad. I used a mixture of iceberg and spinach then I added tomatoes, shredded cheese, sunflower seeds and diced ham and I used their Italian dressing. The salad was delicious. I would have liked carrots and cucumbers but those ingredients didn't look fresh. Then I tried some proteins and I started with the ribs. Unfortunately they were not tender. Next I tried the fried fish. The fish was hot and fresh and cooked well. The tartar sauce on the buffet didn't look fresh so I just used ketchup. Lastly I tried the meat loaf and surprisingly it tasted good. It was flavored nicely and it had a nice texture. We had a fabulous waitress who kept our drinks full and cleared our used plates. Wish there was a "five star plus" rating. This restaurant is AMAZING!. The salad and hot bar is fantastic (I am rarely a fan of buffets) but this one was so well stocked, clean, and fresh. We get the same server every time. I don't know her name but she is totally sincere and has a down to earth attitude and takes good care of us. Restaurant is clean and well maintained. Farmhouse style decor. They have spinach on the salad bar which is not common for a lot of salad bars and amazing. Buffet food is always top notch. I don't eat catfish but my family says it's delicious. I ordered the chicken pot pie this time, crust was flaky but not much chicken inside. The wait staff was great, they made substitutions and brought food out promptly. We had two appetizers, lobster Rangoon and garlic cheese bites. Both were excellent and served hot. If the meal had ended there, this would be a five star review. But no. I had the sirloin steak and it was cooked a decent mid-rare, with butter on top. The butter was soft but wouldn't melt. I had a baked potato and mixed veggies. The mixed veggies were three slices of zucchini, one of yellow squash, and a large chunk of red onion, not bad, not the best. The baked potato ruined the meal. I'm pretty sure it was cooked the day before because it was old and collapsed inside its jacket. And it was so cold, it wouldn't melt butter. The flavor was kind of burnt, so it had probably been kept in a hot bin all the day before and then refrigerated overnight, then heated, but not very well. My wife got chicken with sweet potato fries. The chicken was fine, the fries were shriveled twigs that had been cooked to a lifeless state hours before and were also served cold. So here's the thing: why make a decent $20 entree and then decide to go cheap on a $.25 potato? And has anyone, ever, in the history of restaurants, been served a cold potato? It shows zero respect for your customers to present less than your best quality for their dining experience. There was enough upside to my experience that I didn't want to leave a zero star review. But I won't be back, and restaurants are hard-put to survive without return customers. read more

Do you give 2 stars if you would not go again or 3? I have always said i wish i could give half a star. First complaint was the water, it had a perfume smell or detergent smell even after the second glass, so it was contaminated at the ice or if water was in pitchers, don't know exactly, but suffice it to say i was lucky to have water in the truck. Salad buffet was nice, but not special in any way. Hot food was the same, fine but not special. Service was IMO sub par since i waited in the front by the checkout for 5 minutes or more before my waitress surfaced. There was fish on the buffet and no tartar sauce for the table next to me. I do like their cool whole deer mount in the lobby, restaurant is very nice and seemed clean, but the most important part was mediocre at best and the bad water pushed me over the edge. read more

We were traveling on I-44 and decided to stop at the Silo. While some reviews weren't positive we thought we'd give it a try. We found the Silo's interior has a rustic charm. We ate from the buffet which was good. There was a good variety of salads and toppings on the salad bar. The hot food items included potatoes, three vegetables fried chicken and fried catfish nuggets which were delicious. The waitress was attentive to our table by refilling drinks and removing dishes. Drove from St Louis to try this restaurant. The four of us were looking forward to good home cooking. First off 2 of us ordered 1/2 fried chicken and were informed that there was no fried chicken. Disappointed I ordered the catfish plate and it was very good. The side of baked potato with loads of butter was fine. The corn was nothing special and the salad was fine. My friend ordered the chili Mac and it was good with a fair quantity of the meal. The other entrees were good. A suggestion though. They give you a coupon for 20% off ice cream in another part of the restaurant. You have to get up go over buy the ice cream and then come back to the table to eat it. It is served in a Styrofoam cup with a plastic spoon. Try using a real bowl and metal spoon. We will try it again and hopefully they have chicken but we most definitely will call first to check. We stopped in here during a visit to Merrimack this last week. The food was really good but I wouldn't call it life-changing, our server was very nice the atmosphere was pretty nice, and we enjoyed the meal. What got my attention was the young kid that seated us when we came in. He looked at me about 6 ft tall and you could not even see his face he had so much wild, unkempt hair. When I go to a restaurant I don't go there for your self expression display I go there to dine and to have a nice meal in a clean environment. I'm serious the kid had shoulder length hair and it completely covered his face and looked very unkempt. I don't think this sends a very good signal to have this person at front of house in your restaurant. The first thing that came to my mind was that there's probably going to be hair in the food. Well i can't tell you how the food is. But the welcome was less than great. We were in Sullivan to visit my dads grave and decided to stop by the Silo. As we had seen it when in town before. It happen to be Sunday afternoon. We stood by the "wait to be seated sign". Ignored by the first person that saw us. Then a young man came out as the first person whispered to him. First he was like how many. I replied 2. He proceeded to grab two menus and then turned to us and said, we close at 3, do you want yo be seated? I said yes, then he said "i'll have to see if we have a table open". We felt very unwelcome and left. I realize it was late, which we didnt know because we had not been there before, but feel they could have just said we don't seat after a certain time instead of making us feel so unwelcome. Server never advised us of a up charge for bacon cheese and sour cream on the baked potato. Got to register to check out paid left a 5$ tip then realized my bill was wrong I was charged for an extra meal. When I brought it to my waiters attention a manager came out and supposedly fixed it but had not refund all the bill ( tip was still on there) but I had already signed the sec ticket. Salad bar was dirty had food all over it. this was our second trip and the second was just as bad as the first. So I had already reviewed but it didn't save I guess. The atmosphere is very welcoming and so is the staff. Sherry was a delight and so kind with her recommendations. We had an appetizer of potato skins that were outstanding. I mean this set the mood. The presentation was up scale for a 'home style' steakhouse, of course we had to order steaks. Set at "market value" we were a bit afraid of the cost but please treat yourself. We found out the beef is locally sourced from Cuba, Missouri, and NEVER frozen. The sirloin my wife had was thick and melted in her mouth. My rib eye was also perfect and tender. There are so many other items to choose from and Sherry said their catfish is hand batter on site so we are looking forward to that next trip. Oh and the home made dinner rolls are a must.
