Silver Diner has the bones of a great spot -- the ambiance is genuinely cool, with a retro diner aesthetic that draws you in and sets expectations high. Unfortunately, the experience behind the vibe didn't come close to delivering. The service was a real letdown. Our waitress was visibly in a bad mood from the start, and it showed in every interaction. No one came to check on us throughout the meal -- not once. And when the food finally arrived, it came out cold. Not lukewarm, cold. There's really no excuse for that, especially when the table hasn't been checked on and has no opportunity to flag it in the moment. It's frustrating because the atmosphere genuinely has something going for it. But cool decor only carries a restaurant so far -- at some point the food and service have to show up, and on this visit neither did. Won't be making a return trip. read more

It had been a really long day and I needed a bite to eat. I needed something familiar, something quick, and something that I wouldn't have to put much thought behind it. I know Silver Diner is a chain in the area, and I knew I liked the food. I came in, sat immediately, and was greeted by the server. Placed a drink order and went to the menu. It has been a while since I have been to one of these, and I wanted to make sure it was still on the menu. Not sure what was going on in this section, but I swear the lights were either off or set to the lowest setting for dimming. I almost had to bring my phone out to give me some light. I confirmed that the item was still on the menu and waited for my server to come back. Listen, whether you have a party of six or a party of one, you really shouldn't skirt around my table and kind of ignore me. I was waiting to place my order and had to wait for my server to come back around to me. My order was finally taken and my drink showed up. I ordered a side salad and their meatloaf. My go to meal for this establishment. My salad came out pretty promptly as it was a food runner bringing this my way. Your typical pregame salad. Before I had this done, the meatloaf made its appearance. The meatloaf hit. It was exactly how I remembered it. For a late dinner, it definitely sat heavy in my stomach. But I know when I did have my head hit the pillow later I was easily fall asleep. Which, I could have done here with how dark the space I was sat in was. Meal was over, but it took a long time to get my bill and pay it. Once I had that out of the way, I went through the well lit portion of the restaurant to use the facilities before heading back out. Great place for a proper breakfast and right across the street from Nationals stadium! The decor is classic diner with chrome and upholstered booths. The avocado toast featured truly fresh cut avocado topping, surprising because you might expect an operation this slick to have a shipped-in avocado drizzle in a tube. But not here - everything's freshly made and they even have gluten-free pancakes. The service was super fast - Karen took our order and seconds later it was with the kitchen staff. We hit Silver Diner post baseball game to eat and kill a bit of time for the postgame crowd to clear out! We got seated right away and our server was attentive. I had a cookies and cream milkshake, which was a generous portion. I enjoyed the caesar (also a big portion!) and my parents liked their burgers. The menu is pretty expansive and gives a kinda cheesecake factory/TGI fridays feel, definitely chain-y. However I love a diner so would definitely come back and try brunch! read more

I met a friend for a breakfast before a soccer game and it wasn't too packed around 9am on a Saturday. The quinoa and coconut pancakes aren't your standard diner pancakes but they're very tasty and have a unique texture due to the quinoa and coconut in the batter. The pancakes include of course quinoa and coconut and also blue berries pecans, grilled banana and strawberries. It's a good portion and they're filling without leaving you in a sugar coma. They also come with a fruit cup which goes well with the pancakes. Service was fast and friendly here. Add an Irish coffee and you've got yourself a breakfast that's worth a try before a soccer game. I have to say that this definitely could've been a better experience. I visited with a friend. We both ordered the mimosa flight. I selected 2 tropical, mango, and watermelon cucumber. - The tropical mimosa was not what either of us expected. I twas thick and full of mint shreds. The combination made it difficult to drink. It reminded us of a bloody mary, in a way. -The mango was decent. -The watermelon cucumber was okay. I ordered the crabcake melt that came with a lobster jus and fries. The crab cake was very herbaceous. It was borderline too much. It didn't leave much for it to taste like crab. When the plate came out, the sandwich was cold. Mind you, there were only 5 guests in the restaurant, including myself and my friend. In addition to the sandwich being cold, the lobster "jus" was not good at all. It had obviously been sitting for a minute because it developed a film on top. When I brought it to the attention of the waiter, he took my plate. We watched him walk my plate behind the counter and put the bowl of sauce into the microwave. Ew. When he returned, we asked if I could receive a new bowl reheated properly, as opposed to him reheating that bowl. He advised us that they make the sauce in the morning and just microwave it anyway. Then my friend's fried egg was like rubber. I wonder if that was reheated as well. I was like yeaaaa I guess it is a diner. Maybe just stick to the typical breakfast foods here. read more

My husband and I are regulars for dine in and take out. My husband can't get enough of the short rib burger, but lots of dishes are great here. I love all the crab dishes: crab cake platter, crab pasta, crab melt sandwich, and crab cake Benedict. Really good quality and such a reasonable price. I also love the club sandwich and the vegan cauliflower pasta. We usually split an Oreo milkshake. The adult milkshakes are HUGE! Most stuff is generous in size here. Dog friendly patio and kid-friendly throughout. My sisters's kids loved their breakfast today. We also finally tried some breakfast items ourselves. Found this place just by walking around our hotel on a recent DC trip. Old school diner vibe with a modern menu. They partner with 16 local farms and have a wide variety of dishes with organic ingredients. We loved it so much we ate here twice on our trip! We had clubs, bison burger, crab cakes and meat loaf. Lots of food for your money. Also don't sleep on the milk shakes! A variety menu too includes apps, salads, soups, burgers and a variety of entrees. Also they have a great drink menu and daily happy hour! Service was friendly and quick. Staff had orders in and food served a short time later. Highly recommend them for a pre or post game meal! We came in the middle of a ball game, so the place was empty. We were seated right away, but it took a few minutes for the server to come over. The server was very friendly and attentive to our needs. We both ordered The Reuben sandwich and it was decent. One of my pet peeves is consistency in cooking.  When I make a sandwich, I make sure the toppings are even across.  When I got this, I was pleasantly surprised on how much was inside, but it wasn't consistent.  There were a lot more toppings on one side of each half, so unless I fixed it, I would end up eating a quarter of it with almost no filling.  I did fix it, and I left happy. The coleslaw that came with it had a little bit of corn in it, which I have never seen before.  I actually liked it, and the fries were good. The ambience was not the feel of a diner.  I have been to other ones, and they feel like a diner.  This one felt more like a higher-end restaurant, which was probably because of the location and I had no issues with that. One of my partners and I favorite brunch spots in DC! The only reason why I'm giving them a 4/5 is mainly due to location and parking that sucks. There's limited street parking and God forbid there's an actual baseball game which seems to be every day, you'll have to pay $40 for parking! It's insane! I think they really should be able to validate parking for customers. The food here is beyond amazing! They really pay attention to detail. However, don't plan on having a DD if someone wants to get the bottomless mimosas, margaritas, and bellini's. EVERYONE at the table has to get bottomless. I recommended a DD option for juice or something. Not everyone drinks or someone should be sober enough to drive. If I got pulled over for drinking and driving, I'd tell them immediately where I was drinking at and that there wasn't a bottomless non-alcoholic option. Just a thought. Otherwise the server's are phenomenal and very personable with the customers as if we're family. The restaurant is always very clean but there are only three individual restroom stalls and there is always a line, I wish there were more restrooms. They have a silver social upstairs, which I will have to go visit. The server was sweet as can be as well as the hostess. We loved the outside seating that overlooks the main gate at the ballpark and gives a great chance for people watching. The wait before anyone helped us was very very long so we were glad we allowed a lot of time before we needed to go to the game. I had the Skewered shrimp Bibimbop and I am not sure why they decided on that name, as there is nothing Korean about the dish. It has a nice coconut curry sauce and is more of an Indian or Thai dish. It wasn't a lot of food for the price and was mostly rice. We also had the Appetizer sampler and everything in that was very good but it was also $20. My server was friendly and attentive and seemed to love her job. I was torn on what to order. I went with the crab cake melt, but wish I had selected the fish and chips. My sandwich was pretty good, but there was an odd flavor to it. I think it's a seasoning that I just don't care for. It was very, very messy! Portions are massive, but the staff graciously offered to pack up half of my food to go before even bringing it out to serve me. Silver diner is truly hit or miss when it comes to the food. This morning I had a chicken pot pie and it was gross. It had squash in it which gave it a sweet taste and only had flaky breading on the top, so I wouldn't consider it a pie. It came with a side, I chose the chowder and my friend chose the Cesar salad. The Cesar salad had tomatoes on top which was odd. Save your money and get a frozen Marie Calendar pot pie from the grocery store. We had been to a pregame event at Nats Park and had some time to kill before game time so we were looking for a breakfast place. Silver diner is just outside the centerfield gate. I've been to the Silver Diner in Rockville and Silver in Bethesda so I figured the food would be good. The location was perfect. There was a wait for inside seating, so they offered their upstairs area called Silver Social with a more limited menu or outdoor seating. It was a beautiful day so we chose a shady table outside. Our server was wonderful and attentive and got us coffee with creamers and water immediately. The coffee was just okay but it was bottom. They do offer espresso drinks. Next time. I ordered their American breakfast, which was eggs, any style, choice of meat, potatoes, and a biscuit. I chose scrambled, which came out overdone. Next time I'd specify soft scrambled eggs. I also got pork sausage, which was good. There were a ton of potatoes, which were well seasoned and tasty. The biscuit was crispy on the outside and soft in the center. Outstanding. My husband got the challah caramel French toast with over easy eggs and chicken sausage. It looked really good and he liked it. He said the sausage was just okay. Went to the Giants vs Nationals game on Sunday. Wanted to eat before going inside, so stopped at Silver Diner pre-game. There was a small wait to get seated, but service was quick once we were ready. I got the Old Bay fried shrimp, my wife got an omelette from the all-day breakfast, and our son got grilled cheese with tomato bisque. Everything was very good. Portion size was good too. Was worried about having too much and it going to waste since we wouldn't have been able to take leftovers into the stadium. But what we ordered was the perfect size for a pre-game meal. They had an awesome graphic on the wall as well, of old Griffith Stadium, where the Senators used to play before they moved. The prices were a little high for a diner, but still cheaper than ballpark food, so probably still a good deal. read more
