I absolutely love this place. I loved it 20 years ago when it was Le Coco's on Hwy 55, and the food is still as delicious as it was back then. The waffles and pancakes are worth traveling for. The omelettes are top notch. And I've never had food here I didn't like. read more

Cute lil restaurant. They serve breakfast and Southern dishes like chicken livers/gizzards & stuff like that. I had chicken & waffles. The chicken was lacking some seasoning but it was crispy just like I like it. The waffle was was kinda chewy. Not what I'm used to when ordering a Belgian waffle. My hubby had fried chicken & three sides. He loved his dish. The waitress was super nice & attentive. The only drinks that you get free refills on are tea & water I think, maybe coffee too? Add to that the delicious omelettes and frittatas along with genuine, freshly made HUGE waffles with a multitude of toppings that will keep you coming back. The service was excellent with genuine smiles of greeting and frequent checks during your meal, that make you happy you chose this establishment. I recommend the Silver Spoon to all ages. I wanted a salad, I got one yesterday. At the broken egg in Durham. $10 for the sorriest collection of lettuce leaves I've ever seen. So I came in here, and I'm picky. I don't like every vegetable. They let me substitute ones that I wanted. The salad was fresh! It was substantial! I am grateful. The service was prompt and friendly. I really like this locally owned spot. I also love that they give you a carafe of your beverage so you don't have to pace yourself or wait, ever. It should be more crowded in here!! read more

I generally get the same dish the fried chicken and the side of double okra . . This time I decided to get the mash potatoes and gravy . The chicken and okra were hot however mash potatoes and gravy were cold . I sent then back and this time the mash potatoes were obviously reheated in the microwave. Let me start by saying that our waitress told us the cook was new, so my review may not be indicative of what others would experience. First, I got a diet coke, for $1.80. In a can. I can't remember the last time I saw that in a diner, but ok. My 3 year-old daughter got a hot chocolate that was served too hot for me to drink. Made with, I assume, hot water and tasting very little like chocolate. I ordered steak (medium rare) and eggs (scrambled hard), house fries, and a side of hollandaise. The eggs were almost runny and mostly flavorless, but hey, they're eggs. The house fries looked like potato and onion hash but tasted pretty good. The steak came grey on the outside and tasted like it'd been frozen for a while. A bit under on one side. Not the worst, especially for breakfast, but still a bit disappointing. The hollandaise, though... when it first arrived it was seriously broken, looking like yellow cottage cheese floating in melted butter. I sent it back and got a larger serving of hollandaise, supposedly from a new batch. It looked like they just tried to beat more butter into the one I sent back. The waitress apologized and said that they're usually known for their hollandaise. I think she tried to get it taken off the bill (I didn't ask), but no luck from the manager. When I paid, the person I assumed was the manager asked how everything I was. I said, "Eh, it was alright." She didn't ask any questions beyond that. If this had been Waffle House, I wouldn't have thought anything of it. At over $40 for two adults and a kid, though... I may try back on a weekend, but I doubt it. On the upside, we did get to overhear a fascinating conversation by some seniors at the table next to us about laxatives. read more

Southern diner fare, pretty standard. Certainly a good choice for this genre if you live out on the far north side of Durham, but I'm not sure I can eek out the enthusiasm for a fourth star. While the fried chicken gets the job done and sides like the field peas are quite good, I actually prefer the chicken at Shrimp Boat. Unfortunately, the mashed potatoes are not housemade, but are the whipped instant sort--a huge demerit in my eyes. They do have breakfast all day, but again, the drive is just a bit much for me--I'd rather head over to Elmo's. Your mileage may vary--and if you live out on this side of Durham I'd actually recommend skipping the Elmo's and making Silver Spoon your go-to for breakfast and Southern diner fare. read more

My family frequents the restaurant quite often this restaurant has it's ups and downs. Frist thing, you notice is when you enter the restaurant is one of two things. That the restaurant is ether packed or a ghost town it is an interesting mix of ebb and flow. The problem is that their is so little space in the former pizza hut that they have all the tables crammed in there. I wonder if the fire code (112) allows them to accommodate all those people on a sunday morning. As a result of having so many tables crammed in there the walkways are tight which makes services alittle difficult. Plus, they have so many people per section it impacts service but on Tuesday night they are empty and service is great. The interior could use a lot of work, It being decorated with heater and fans. The bathrooms could also use some work in way of cleanliness. The food is always good. I have never had any complaints from the food. I usually order stuff without bread or carbs. I have never had an issue with the taste or quality of the food. The woman who seats people with the Haijab is very nice and accommodating. She goes out of her way and strategizes the movement of people and tables to accomodate the number of people in your party. What spared me to write this review is I think they should serve hot tea in the small coffee pitcher. They give you a tea bag and fill the cup with water. This is not an exceptable practice. read more

Many years ago there used to be a restaurant on the north end of Roxboro Rd called Le Coco (in the space that is now Eno River Eatery). They were famous for their breakfasts. I spent many mornings there guzzling coffee and slowly making my way through their enormous omelets. Well, they eventually closed up shop there, moved to a shopping center off Roxboro St. in Bragtown, and changed their name to The Silver Spoon. I didn't get there for breakfast, but I made it for lunch one day and THATS when I discovered their Greek salad with chicken! I worked nearby so I'd get there frequently for lunch and I'd order the Greek salad with chicken every time! They closed up shop there when Walmart left, and moved to their present location just a stone's throw from where they originally started all those years ago. Fortunately, they kept the same menu, and I have been going back whenever I'm in the area for my Greek salad fix. That is -literally- the only thing on the menu I have ever had! It is a salad of iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, black olives, peperoncini peppers, big chunks of feta cheese and tender marinated chunks of chicken. The chicken is wonderful. The salad dressing is absolutely delicious. Pair it with a glass of sweet tea and it is a simple and very tasty lunch. This isn't a fancy place. The decor could be better, and it's a little worn around the edges, but it's clean. The service has always been friendly and efficient. The price is right. I'm a fan! read more

This is essentially a diner with hometown spirit. The wait staff is super friendly, our waitress Kiki was so kind and happy that it really improved the experience. We enjoyed the fried green tomatoes, the shrimp dinner with hushpuppies, okra, and Mac and cheese, and the garlic bread. The grilled chicken salad was nothing to be excited about, but it's good for people looking to have a lighter meal with fewer calories. The iced water was refreshing and we got a carafe for the table so I didn't have to ask repeatedly for refills (it's hot, y'all). Comfort food by the ton! The Lovely Bride and I drove past this place for quite a while before finally deciding to give it a try. (A fellow Yelper gave it a good review.) We've been for weekend brunch several times, and always have a decent meal there. The standard omelet, however, is five eggs. As in half an Italian dozen! (In Italy, a box of eggs holds ten, not 12.) This is far more than any normal person should be encouraged to eat in a day, let alone at a single meal. And that's without considering the sides! Fortunately, you can order the lighter portion, which is three eggs. (When you do, they bring your coffee in a sippy cup and call you "Cupcake." - not really.) They have such a huge selection of breakfast food that it always takes me half a cup of coffee to decide, and I sometimes change my mind mid-stream. I've never really had a bad dish. Coffee is so-so, but I'm a bit of a coffee snob, and have stopped complaining. I just tough it out, or order water anymore. Theirs is drinkable, at least. They serve all meals of the day, and are open pretty much every day, but we have only been there for brunch. Of course, my Lovely Bride is partial to baklava, so we have to get some to go for later in the day, but it rarely makes it home. They make it in-house, and it's as good as I've had anywhere. read more

More than just your average greasy spoon. We get takeout from here at least once a week. The menu is huge. I love the Bacon Benedict and their french toast.The omelettes are huge. Nice waitstaff, huge menu, reasonable prices and vintage atmosphere made this experience great, but the food is the crowning achievement at Silver Spoon. My dining partners ordered the fried chicken and I ordered the fried catfish. Sizable portions, fresh and delicious. The catfish in particular was the best I have ever had. Perfectly fried in crispy breading. So yum. The sides, also delicious, especially the Lima beans! The food took awhile to come out of the kitchen, but otherwise a great dining experience.
